On a cold spring day in 1954, the battered and beaten body of a young woman was found in a river in Boulder Canyon. For decades she would be known as Boulder Jane Doe. Hard, scary trad climbing is all fun and games until someone breaks their back. That's what happened to Molly Mitchell on Crank It, a 5.13+ sport climb in Boulder Canyon that Molly was attempting to headpoint on gear. Nevertheless, Molly sought redemption and returned to the climb years later and ultimately sent it on gear. But what she discovered about her self, and her health, ended up being the real prize of this inspiring journey. But first, the hosts take a closer look at how one of the biggest and hardest routes on Denali got not one but two insane speed records set within a matter of weeks. That would be the Slovak Direct, with Matt Cornell, Jackson Marvell and Alan Rousseau setting the pace at 21 hours, 35 minutes. Then two weeks later, Michael Gardner, Sam Hennessey and Rob Smith came in at 17 hours, 10 minutes. Our final bit is music from an old classic. Show Notes Follow Molly Mitchell on Instagram. Endurance News: PROFESSIONAL TRIATHLETES ORGANISATION ANNOUNCES LIONEL SANDERS AND HOLLY LAWRENCE AS WINNERS OF THE JULIE MOSS AWARD FOR COURAGEOUS PERFORMANCES AT THE COLLINS CUP The Professional Triathletes Organisation today announced that Team Internationals' Lionel Sanders and Team Europe's Holly Lawrence have been awarded the Julie Moss Award for their courageous performances at The Collins Cup. The Julie Moss Award is named after Julie Moss, whose performance at the 1982 World Championship in Kona, in which she collapsed and crawled across the finish line, has come to signify the indomitable spirit of triathlon. In many ways she is the inspiration of the PTO's motto, “Dum Spiro Spero,” which means “Whilst I breathe, I hope.” The many gutsy performances at the Collins Cup made this decision extremely difficult. From Team Internationals' Kyle Smith racing with one aerobar after crashing, to an unwell Daniela Ryf of Team Europe pushing herself on the run to earn three vital points, from the outstanding performance by American Chelsea Sodaro barely six months after the arrival of her baby Skye, to the mad sprint by Team Internationals' Jackson Laundry in the final two kilometres to win his match, the day was filled with grit and determination. But the performances of Sanders and Lawrence particularly captivated the fans and showcased the meaning of The Collins Cup. Canadian Lionel Sanders, the spiritual leader of Team Internationals, arrived at the event having finished second at IRONMAN Copenhagen only six days before. However, nothing was going to stop him leaving his body and soul on the racecourse for the PTO's flagship event. Sanders not only competed on just six days rest from a full distance race, but he then rose from the pavement after a bike crash to win his match against Europe's Sebastian Kienle and USA's Andrew Starykowicz. Simon Whitfield, Olympic Gold Medal winner and Team Internationals Captain, commented, “There is literally no way to describe Lionel Sanders. You can exhaust your Thesaurus with words like relentless, indomitable, unyielding, driven, inexorable, and never come close to describing what Lionel Sanders is or does. You can only conclude it is beyond the realm of human comprehension. In everything the man does he lives his mantra to have “NO LIMITS.” It was an honour to be his Captain and experience his passion and spirit.“ For the women, Europe's Holly Lawrence personifies the values of the Collins Cup. One of the marquee matches against fierce rival Ellie Salthouse from Team Internationals was turning out to be well and truly epic as the women battled side-by-side for every stroke of the swim, colliding numerous times as each refused to yield a centimetre. It was triathlon's equivalent of Ali v. Fraser fought in the waters of the Danube River. Lawrence led on the bike until disaster struck, and she crashed not far from T-2. Bloodied, she rose immediately to continue the fight, but her damaged bike took almost five minutes to repair as she waited helplessly. She watched both Salthouse and USA's Skye Moench pass her and saw her chance to win the match evaporate. Bike repaired but spirit unbroken, she rode into transition to a standing ovation. With no chance to win her match, she nonetheless persevered in the run and denied Team USA and Team International bonus points, thus helping Team Europe to victory. Natascha Badmann, Team Europe Captain, noted, “Holly Lawrence's performance was an inspiration to our team. We had already lost points in Match No. 1 with the tremendous performance of USA's Taylor Knibb. If Holly was not able to continue, we would have lost an additional 1-1/2 points. With grit and determination, she battled back to deny both Team USA and Team Internationals 1-1/2 vital points. This did not go unnoticed by the fans and the rest of Team Europe, who were not prepared to see Holly's effort be in vain.” Lawrence mentioned in her post-race interview that if it had been a normal championship race, she would not have continued after it took so long to mend her bike, but since she was racing for Team Europe, she was willing to sacrifice her personal goals for those of the team. Today's edition of Ben's Story of the Day features: 1) They may be old but they're not out of the fight! An assisted living facility had two fewer residents after an elderly couple with early signs of dementia flew the coop. The entrance's keypad had buttons that all make unique beeps which the husband picked up on. Using some of his old army skills, he took note of which buttons made up the password and did a little deciphering. After cracking the password the couple made their escape. Normally you'll find weird, unusual or downright stupid here but this time it's nothing but pure genius! 2) It's finally happened. The most descriptive and yet least descriptive headline of all time. It features boulders, Boulder Canyon, the city of Boulder, Colorado and the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. Why overthink naming everything when 'boulder' does just fine? 3) Police officers have to deal with a lot on a daily basis. Fortunately, a colostomy bag wielding weirdo who's probably had a bit too much to drink in Kid Rock’s Big A** Honky Tonk & Rock ‘n’ Roll Steakhouse isn't one of those daily doses of dumb. Unfortunately for the responding officers, this is the (hopefully) one time they will have to use all of their training to figure things out. Which one will be crowned Ben's Story of the Day? Which one is your story of the day? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Photo: Tory Powers Listening to her speak while reclined in bed, locked into a stabilizing back brace after a trad fall that saw her fracture two vertebrae, I couldn't help but think, Molly Mitchell makes sound and brave decisions. Weird, huh? While making a name for herself after crushing 5.14 sport and authoring bold and dangerous traditional first ascents, Molly kicked down the door when she became the 7th woman to climb 5.14 trad with her ascent of China Doll in Upper Dream Canyon, Boulder, CO. From the outside, you felt like you were watching the next crusher waltzing onto the scene, prepped and psyched to make mincemeat of trad standards across the globe. Photo: Scott Crady Behind the scenes, however, Molly wages another battle, where clipping the ephemeral chains demands much more than weighted hangs and native talent. Diagnosed in her early 20s, Molly recently shared her struggles with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Trichotillomania in Climbing Magazine (Winter 2020 issue). In an extraordinary essay, Molly ushers us through a restless landscape of doubt, anxiety, and a struggle for self-worth, a Virgil to our Dante in a year where disquiet and dread define the zeitgeist of a nation in turmoil. She's a worthy and careful guide. Photo: Tory Powers Now, back to that back brace and those decisions. After tackling China Doll and taming her screaming doubts, Molly launched herself into her next objective: a trad ascent of Boulder Canyon's notoriously flared and slippery Crank It (5.13c/d). After sussing the line on bolts (good decision) and diluting each gear placement down to the millimeter (good decision), Molly launched up the route on lead. About 10 feet above where Brad Gobright spit off the same line in the film Safety Third, breaking his back and ankle, Molly caught air, ripping four pieces of gear out of their shallow placements and decking from 30 feet, right onto her keister. Two spinal compression fractures later, Molly found herself braced up and forced away from the rock and suddenly intimate with a mind she has worked so hard to make an ally. Photo: Tory Powers Molly Mitchell is exactly the person we need in 2020's apocalyptic landscape of trauma and anxiety, an extraordinary athlete whose accomplishments on the rock are only superseded by her advocacy for mental health in a sometimes toxic public forum. Her bravery in the act of disclosure and candor without apology is a reminder to all of us, that behind the curtain of our achievements each of us must wrestle with the coiling serpents of our own burdens. It's a call to empathy in a time of isolation and we couldn't hope for a more humane messenger. Have a question or a pitch or perhaps a gift of one million American dollars? By the time it was officially dedicated in 1935, the colossal dam project on the Colorado River had been called by several different names. In the exploratory stages, back in 1922, the project was referred to as the Boulder Canyon Project. Boulder Canyon was replaced by Black Canyon, when it was discovered to be a more suitable spot to place the dam. It's name will change again.... and again...

Emily Harrington joins Chris and Brian for the 2016 USA Bouldering Nationals, where they filled a mind-bending 14+ hours of time behind the mics. Brian Runnells and Chris Weidner have been climbing for a long time. They've also been writing about climbing for a long time. Before his identity was finally sleuthed out, Brian was the one-man aggregating super-bot behind the website Climbing Narc. In a torturous twist, you can still visit the page, where the last post logged falls in April of 2015, reading, "Yes, I'm still alive..." In it's heyday, Climbing Narc rallied a massive following and was, at times, the most popular climbing website in the United States. Chris makes his living writing about climbing, no small feat. He's written for most of the major mags, all while logging a climbing-specific column for Boulder's The Daily Camera for 11 years. He and Jason Haas are just wrapping up Weidner's first guidebook effort for Boulder Canyon. In an interesting twist, the commentary "booth" brought the two of them together for Louder Than Eleven's broadcast of the 2015 Psicobloc competition. Like Madden and Summerall, they've worked together ever since. We talk about the experience of commentating for a sport like climbing and how the two of them got into the gig in the first place. We also chat about the famous blooper reels, any chances they'll be commentating for the upcoming Olympics, and how Brian finally contextualized the phrase, "Netflix and chill." Check out a blooper (or highlight??) reel here. Check out a 2014 Thundercling interview with the Narc here. Questions, comments, queries to write for Thundercling or join as a guest? Drop us a line at thunderclingpodcast@gmail.com. As always, thanks to Ryne Doughty for the rad tunes! Happy holidays, gang. Be safe, love hard, have fun! We'll see you all in 2019!!

I've listened to Robb talk about it being beneficial to not exceed 6.4mmol/120mg/dl 2 hours after a meal but does it matter how high my blood sugar goes before that 2 hour period if it it's at an acceptable level come that 2hour threshold. I always find my blood sugar below 6.4mmol by 2 hours but I sometimes notice it is above that at around the 1 hour mark. Hope to hear back soon. [10:39] Question on PSMF vs. a low protein fast day Andrew says: Hi Robb (and/or trusted associate), I signed up for the Keto Masterclass last week but have been following you (figuratively) since April of 2013. My goal back then started with Health and Fat Loss as I had gained some weight when our 3 kids were born in 6 years. At that point I started Paleo, and after 3 months I felt so good, and was "the healthiest patient in the clinic" according to my doctor when I went in to get bloodwork, that my focus changed to improve body composition without sacrificing health. I'm okay with where I'm at now but hoping this keto approach will get me over that last hurdle. I had a dexa last year and was at about 22% body fat, would like to get under 15. I'm 6'0, about 200 lbs, and 39 years old. I've tried all different things over these past 5 years (always keeping Paleo as a backbone) but haven't been able to get there. So that's my recent history in a nutshell. I'd love some advice on something new I wanted to try out along with this new keto approach. I've been all-in on with the restricted eating window for the past few years (about 16 hr fasts or more) and was thinking I'd mix in a low-protein day on Mondays. I liked hearing what you had to say about giving your body a break from processing proteins for one day a week. I heard Ben Greenfield advocating for that as well. But then I heard your most recent podcast on PSMF with Emmerich and that seems to make a lot of sense too. So, for someone who is doing keto and has a focus on getting from 20% body fat to sub-15% body fat, which approach would you suggest? A 1-day protein fast, or a 1-day PSMF? Or both? I think I could do both if you dont think that's too much. Thanks for your time! 4. [19:05] Help me understand Healthy Oils! Trent says: Hi Robb, I love fat. However, I find myself "afraid" of many oils and really limit myself as much as possible to your recommendations. What is your take on a recent Men's Health article promoting the Nordic diet, and it's focus on rapeseed (canola) oil? The article touts the benefits of this oil, but it has been on my naughty list! In other news, one of my treats always has to be potato chips, and I often look for variations. One such is the brand Boulder Canyon, which uses avocado oil in the frying process. Do these chips offer me any solace, or does the high heat from the deep frying end up spoiling all the goodness that avocado oil has to offer? I love your work, thanks for all you do! 5. [26:07] Keto and lifting Nate says: Hey Robb! I have heard you talk in the past about some activities not jiving with keto (crossfit, glycolytic) but what other activities does this encompass? For someone who wants to get into lifting (namely a bodybuilding type routine) are there any conflicts/considerations that should be taken into account: such as high reps and glycogen depletion, workout frequency/length, etc.? 6. [28:12] Overtraining question Dustin says: Hi Robb, my name is Dustin . I’ve recently started listening to your podcasts. I have a question that has been really troubling me and after listening to your podcasts ( on episode 14 now) I’m hoping you can give me some advice . I’m a marathon runner , and just enjoy working out for personal health . I work a full time job as a machinist . For 12 hours 4 days a week I’m constantly on my feet, constantly lifting heavy metal parts 75+ pounds . Im worried that if I’m doing all of this heavy lifting and moving everyday that I may not be benefiting from any workouts because of the lack of rest my body gets due to work. I’ve recently adopted the paleo diet hoping that eating right will help. But I still worry it may not be good enough . I dropped my workouts down to only 2 days a week. Focusing primarily on core workouts and the big 3. Dead lifts, bench press, and squats. Then I also run 3 times a week. Can you please give me some feedback on how I can optimize all the work I’m putting in if I’m working this hard labor job . I feel as tho this is a question that a lot of people in my line of work could relate to. I hope to hear back , love your podcasts. It’s all I listen to while I’m at work !

The story of Hoover Dam Watch this video at Public Access America https://youtu.be/kKOTDeyuAY8 Explains the overwhelming need to control and regulate the raging waters of the Colorado River; the 1928 passage of the Boulder Canyon Project authorizing construction of the Hoover Dam; the ensuing construction of diversion tunnels and then the dam itself; building of support facilities, such as a steel fabrication plant for giant pipe construction; and creation of hydroelectric operations that provided electricity to California, Nevada, and Arizona. Also details how Lake Mead evolved into a successful recreational area as a result of the dam construction. DVD copied by IASL Master Scanner Timothy Vollmer. Hoover Dam, once known as Boulder Dam, is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was controversially named after President Herbert Hoover. Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torrid summer weather and lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned over the dam to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule. Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by volume.[5] The dam is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 30 mi (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year. The heavily travelled U.S. 93 ran along the dam's crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam Bypass opened.
