Text us and say hello! In episode 34 of Backwards Compatible, we kick off 2025 with a slapshot into the world of NHL Hitz 2003! Admittedly, I got my wires crossed at the start and thought we were covering Hitz 2002 instead—leading to a scramble to redo my notes mid-show—but everything came together in the end for an epic discussion.Lou and I dive into what made NHL Hitz 2003 a standout arcade sports title, from its over-the-top action to its perfect balance of chaos and hockey fundamentals. We also take a broader look at the state of the NHL in the early 2000s, with a generation of legendary players like Brian Leetch and Mark Messier nearing the end of their careers, but still making their presence felt in this game. The episode wouldn't be complete without revisiting our favorite ongoing debate: arcade sports games vs. simulation games. While Lou appreciates the depth of sims, I remain firmly on Team Arcade, and NHL Hitz 2003 is the perfect example of why. It's fast, fun, and doesn't take itself too seriously—exactly how I like my sports games. So grab your controller, lace up your skates, and join us as we break down one of the most exciting hockey games ever made!Support the showWe've got merch!Check out the site for some awesome Gen 'S' swag :)
The Canucks all did their job last night in Anaheim, defeating the Ducks 5-1. But the big story of the night was Quinn Hughes' sensational performance, capped off by his 300th career assist, reaching that mark faster than any defenceman not named Brian Leetch or Bobby Orr.

With the help of independent scouting service Team 33 (1:19:00), Sheng gets into why Dumba, despite his recent statistical decline, could be a fantastic fit for San Jose.Next, Keegan and Sheng talk about Erik Karlsson (1:27:50), and why the lack of suitors for Karlsson could spell trouble for the Sharks. Finally, Will Smith (1:36:55)! Smith talks about who's the best bowler among the Sharks prospects (1:37:32), why he chose No. 2 as his jersey number (1:37:58), how his sister Grace supported his career (1:40:40), carrying one of his grandpa Bill's last business cards at the Draft (1:41:35), his dog Rigney and being the great-great grandson of Chicago White Sox owner Charles Comiskey (1:42:45), his favorite nickname -- non-Fresh Prince or Smitty category (1:43:50), and hooking William Eklund up with a sponsorship deal with Chipotle (1:44:50). ★ Support this podcast ★
The Toronto Maple Leafs are back in the playoffs again, looking for their first series win since 2004 again, and probably will find a way to lose again, because the playoffs always brings a bigger emphasis on goaltending and Toronto's first-round challenge is taking on Andrei Vasilevskiy after a season in which the Leafs have used Ilya Samsonov, Matt Murray, Joseph Woll, Erik Kallgren, and even for a hot minute, Jett Alexander. The 2003-04 Maple Leafs come up a lot because they were a good enough team to actually win one (1) playoff series. They were also, at the time, record setters with the highest regular-season points total in Leafs history at 103. They've surpassed that figure three times since, including this year, but not yet appeared in a conference semifinal, or division final, or whatever they want to call the second round nowadays.Pretty good team, won a playoff round… doesn't really capture it. Who was on the 2003-04 Maple Leafs?Five Hall of Famers, for one thing. Largely winding down their careers, but still five Hall of Famers: Ed Belfour, Ron Francis, Brian Leetch, Joe Nieuwendyk, and captain Mats Sundin. Really, it should be six Hall of Famers, because Alexander Mogilny was there, too, plus a Masterton Trophy winner in Gary Roberts. And that's just the guys on the ice because the coach was also a Hall of Famer, Pat Quinn. Then there were five guys who aren't Hall of Famers, but were solid NHLers, dudes who played 1,000 or more games in the league, the kind of fellas you're going to want on your side in the playoffs: Tie Domi, Tom Fitzgerald, Calle Johansson, Bryan McCabe, and Matt Stajan. It should've been more than five guys with 1,000 games, but remember that the NHL, reacting to the Maple Leafs winning a playoff series (not really, it wasn't that rare at the time), canceled the entire 2004-05 season. Four more 2003-04 Leafs played at least 900 NHL games, but not 1,000: Tomáš Kaberle, Ken Klee, Bryan Marchment, and Darcy Tucker.Even the list of players from this team who were just dudes… is pretty solid. This team had Nik Antropov, Wade Belak, Alexei Ponikarovsky, Robert Reichel, and The Other Guy From The Legion Of Doom Mikael Renberg. The 2003-04 Leafs were a flawed team with most of its biggest names not in their prime, but what a collection of hockey talent in one place at one time. If they ever win another playoff series, will it be as much fun to look at that roster two decades later? We'll see. Maybe. This is a public episode. In episode 22, Noah and Garth get fired up in the final episode for the regular season. They will discuss Erik Karlsson potentially becoming the first defenseman since Brian Leetch in 1991-92 to score 100 points in a season, and his odds to win the Norris Trophy. They will also revisit the Eastern Conference Wild Card race, and debate whether the Panthers or Penguins will be the final team in, or if a dark horse team could perhaps sneak in at the last minute. After, they will discuss Wayne Gretzky's proposal to add a shot clock to the shootout, in response to Evgeny Kuznetsov's incredibly time-consuming shootout techniques. In the final few segments, the boys will discuss the Edmonton Oilers, who have quietly been one of the hottest teams in the NHL since January 10th, having clinched a playoff shot and placing themselves right in striking distance of winning the Pacific. Garth and Noah will also revisit the Calder Trophy race, and analyze if Matty Beniers is still the favorite to win it or not. Last but not least, they will unveil their Teams of the Week for week 25! Normally we wait to talk GMs, but the first domino has fallen. Chuck Fletcher has been fired. This leads us into a discussion regarding GMs on the hot seat. While tossing names around, we delve into the situation in Vancouver and Patrik Allvin. Jonathan Quick has settled in nicely in Las Vegas. He is 3-0-0 in his first 3 games with a shutout and a .939 save percentage. The B's are fastest to 50 wins in NHL history, having done it in 64 games. Quinn Hughes is the fastest defenseman to 200 assists, 1 game shorter than Brian Leetch. His projected stats would put him in company with Paul Coffey and Bobby Orr. Jack Hughes had himself a special night on Sunday, factoring in on all 3 goals in a shutout of the 'Canes. Finally, we touch on Allan Walsh and a tweet he sent out regarding Jan Sprynar. Lots to enjoy here, so listen and tell us who you feel is on the hot seat and Enjoy the Show!

They get into discussions about Stanley Cup celebrations, Brian's baseball career, the importance of playing multiple sports, what it's like to play in big cities like New York and Toronto...and much more!
Join Shawn and Roc to talk about Adam Fox becoming the first Ranger to win the Norris Trophy since Brian Leetch in 1997, and only the second defenseman to win the award in his second NHL season since Bobby Orr. On this episode of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast, it's time for us to hold ourselves accountable-- again!-- for all we predicted and projected way, way, way, way, way, way back in the summer of 2019. Elan and Brian have compared their 2019-20 NHL fantasy skater projections against what actually ended up happening. In last week's show, we looked at players who exceeded our expectations by the most; this week, we look at the players whose output was closest to our projections, working to learn whether we were really good or just lucky. We then move on to doing our best to explain and understand the players who underperformed our projections by the greatest amount. We revisit direct quotes (and arguments) from our 2019-20 Audio Almanac and look under the hood to see if we were wrong to be so high on a player, or if a player was wrong to score so many fewer points than they should have. Henrik Lundqvist talks to 540am Sportstalkny's Mark Rosenman and the media after his 450th career win. Henrik Lundqvist made 43 saves to earn his first win of the 2019-20 season and the 450th win of his NHL career. By making his first appearance of the 2019-20 tonight, Lundqvist, who began his 15th season with the Rangers, passed Mike Richter for the most regular seasons with at least one appearance by a Rangers goaltender in franchise history, and he tied Richter for the most seasons with at least one appearance (regular season or playoffs) in Rangers history (Note: Richter appeared in at least one regular season game with the Rangers in 14 different seasons from 1989-90 – 2002-03 but made his NHL debut during the 1989 Stanley Cup Playoffs). Lundqvist also became the seventh player (skater or goaltender) to appear in a regular season game in at least 15 different seasons with the Rangers in franchise history, along with Rod Gilbert (18), Brian Leetch (17), Harry Howell (17), Ron Greschner (16), Jean Ratelle (16), and Ott Heller (15). New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal talks to 540am SPORTSTALKNY's Mark Rosenman and the media after Rangers 3-1 win over the Islanders in Pre-season, Marc Staal and Mika Zibanejad each wore an ‘A’ as alternate captains for the Rangers in tonight’s game. Staal is entering his 10th season as an alternate captain with the Rangers, as he was first named an alternate captain at the start of the 2010-11 season. Among players on the current roster, Staal is the longest-tenured member of the team’s leadership group. Since the Rangers/NHL began to have players wear an ‘A’ on their jersey as an alternate captain during the 1985-86 season (after not doing so for approximately a decade), Staal is one of only three players who have either worn a ‘C’ or an ‘A’ as captain or an alternate captain with the Rangers for 10 or more seasons. The only other two Rangers who have done so over the span are Brian Leetch (13 seasons – alternate captain from 1991-92 – 1996-97; 2000-01 – 2003-04, and captain from 1997-98 – 1999-00) and Mark Messier (10 seasons – captain from 1991-92 – 1996-97; 2000-01 – 2003-04). Zibanejad was named an alternate captain prior to the start of the 2018-19 season, and he first began to wear an ‘A’ during the second half of the 2017-18 season. 1992 US Olympian and 10-year pro Tim Sweeney is our guest on episode 33 of the Pro Hockey Alumni Podcast. A Hall of Fame 4-year player at Boston College, Tim played along side numerous future NHLers such as Craig Janney, Brian Leetch and Doug Brown. Tim was drafted by the Calgary Flames in 1985 and began his pro career in 1989-90 with Salt Lake of the IHL, where he led the team in scoring and was voted as the top US rookie in the league. While with the parent Flames in 1992, Tim was chosen to play for the United States in the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville, France. The unheralded US squad finished fourth in the games and Tim tied for the team lead in points with 7. After a pair of prolific seasons with Providence in the AHL, Tim was chosen by the expansion Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the 1993 expansion draft and enjoyed an excellent season in the Ducks first-ever campaign. Eventually, Tim would make his way back to the Boston Bruins and then the New York Rangers and was productive for both teams before retiring in 1999. In this interview, Tim reveals a lot of interesting anecdotes about people he met along the way including Stu Grimson, Joey Mullen, Raymond Bourque and Wayne Gretzky. Today, Tim is a successful businessman in Massachusetts and remains a key player for the Boston Bruins Alumni team. A nostalgic look back at our favorite Hockey heroes and legends who wore the red, white and blue for the Rangers during the 1960s, 70's and 80's. In this Bonus episode, we look back at Vic Hadfield night at MSG this past Sunday, December 2nd, 2018. During this historic, entertaining and sentimental ceremony the New York Rangers added the former captain and left winger for the famous GAG line to the list of former Rangers greats to have their number retired and lifted to the Garden rafters. The great number 11 has now joined fellow linemates Rod Gilbert, and Jean Ratelle in having his number retired and all three members of the Greatest scoring line in Rangers history will have their uniform numbers hanging side by side atop the rafters at MSG. * Only the 10th Ranger to have his jersey retired joining: #1 Eddie Giacomin #2 Brian Leetch #3 Harry Howell #7 Rod Gilbert #9 Andy Bathgate and Adam Graves #11 Mark Messier and Vic Hadfield #35 Mike Richter * Eloquent and heartfelt speeches by former GAG linemates Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert as well as former Coach and GM Emile Francis. * Former teammates who attended to support and honor Hadfield were Bob Nevin, Eddie Giacomin, Pete Stemkowski, Bruce McGregor, Teddy Irvine, "The Chief" Jim Nielsen, Members of the "BullDog" Line Steve Vickers, Walt Tkaczuk and Bill Fairbairn. As usual, the loudest ovation was for Hall of Famer Brad Park * Also attending was Ron Greshner and other Rangers greats Mark Messier, Adam Graves, Brian Leetch, and Mike Richter. * I would have liked to have seen the ceremony take place during a scheduled game with an original six club such as the Boston Bruins or Chicago BlackHawks. * A briefer Ceremony should have and could have taken place at the scheduled Face-off time so most if not all of the fans would be seated while and bringing energy, enthusiasm, importance and respect to Vic Hadfield and all of the other Ranger greats in attendance on this historic evening in Rangers history. * Fellow teammate and Rangers President Glen Sather along with Current GM Jeff Gorton should also have been at ice level participating in the ceremony. * Finally thus far it has been a Ranger's travesty not to have Hall of Famer Brad Parks number 2 retired at this time. Hopefully, Rangers Management will do the right thing and make this happen in the very near future.
