REO Speedwagon have been one of the most reliable American rock bands for over 50 years. Certain members may come and go, but that name, that quality, and the excellent songs of lead singer Kevin Cronin have been a constant for decades. Unfortunately, that recently came to an end with the departure of founding member Bruce Hall. Plus, Bruce took the name with him. The good news is that most of the same players are playing most of the same songs you've grown to love and rely on, they're just called the Kevin Cronin Band now. Kevin joins us this week to explain the new reality before he goes out on tour with Styx and Don Felder where he'll play the entire Hi-Infidelity album as well as the hits. We also discuss his relationship with original guitarist Gary Richrath, the stories behind songs and albums, how they became known for ballads, and much more. Kevin is a genuinely nice man and he's working hard to continue to deliver the goods (and set the record straight). We're lucky he's still at it.  www.kevincronin.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 17, 2023 38:03

Aside from having a terrific title, the seventh studio album by REO Speedwagon would be the one which would bring them mainstream success.  You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish was the first album to be co-produced by guitarist Gary Richrath and lead singer Kevin Cronin, and was the first to break into the top 40 on the Billboard 200 album charts in the US, peaking at number 29.  It also was the first on which Bruce Hall was a part of the group, replacing Gregg Philbin on bass.  The rest of the group was Nel Doughty on keyboards and Alan Gratzer on drums.   Doughty and Gratzer were college students when the band was founded, and Doughty was inspired to create the name of the group when he saw it written on the board of his “History of Transportation” class. This album trends toward melodic rock and power ballads, which perhaps explains the broader appeal they received.  Richrath's guitar hooks blended well with Cronin's strong vocals, and the result was a polished sound that worked well for both rock anthems and more pensive ballads.  The energy of the studio album also seemed to finally catch the essence and energy of their live performances. The band would go on to become one of the stars of the arena rock world in the 80's, and this album is where that really started for them.Rob brings us this group at the start of their ascent to stardom. Roll with the ChangesThis infectious rock anthem leads off the album, and is a timeless staple of the band's concerts.  Kevin Cronin was inspired to write this song when he returned to the band in 1976 and relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles.  Changes in his life caused the song to hit him instantly.  He started writing the lyrics on a paper bag in his Ford Pinto while driving to L.A.Runnin' BlindThis deeper cut is the third track on the album.  It has a solid guitar riff and we believe a “Cheap Trick” sound.  The lyrics discuss a lover who is always on the road playing the guitar and leaving someone behind.  “Change is comin' no more runnin'”Time for Me to FlyAnother song written by Kevin Cronin, this ballad was inspired by Cronin's breakup with his high school girlfriend.  Unlike “Roll with the Changes,” this song took Cronin 10 years to write, and had been rejected for previous albums.  While it would peak at number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100, it would become one of their best known songs and a timeless ballad.Say You Love Me or Say GoodnightAnother deeper cut that rocks, this one closes out the album.  The lyrics are a call to either make up or split up.  It is a great jam to end the concert or album.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture The Magic of LassieJimmy Stewart makes his last appearance in this installment of the film franchise starring the famous collie. STAFF PICKS:Party by Boston Bruce kicks off the staff picks with the sixth track from Boston's second studio album, “Don't Look Back”  This straight-up party song was co-written by Brad Delp and Tom Scholz, one of only two songs on the album not solely written by Scholz.  While it wasn't released as a single, it received significant airplay on rock stations and appears on Boston's Greatest Hits album.Raise a Little Hell by TrooperWayne keeps the energy up with a rocker off Canadian band Trooper's fourth studio album.  Randy Bachman produced this album entitled “Thick as Thieves.”  It appears in the first season of the NETFLIX show “Stranger Things.”  While not having a big hit in the US (this one went to number 59) Trooper was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2023.Hot Blooded by Foreigner Lynch brings us a monster hit written by Lou Gramm and Mick Jones.  While most people with a fever of 103 would need some rest, the song describes the cure as an after-show rendezvous with the girl he's been checking out.  The song did more than dance up the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 3.Runaway by Jefferson StarshipRob takes the tempo down to close out the staff picks with the second single from the album “Earth.”  This song made it to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Marty Balin takes vocal duties on this song, alternating between a smooth sound in the verses and a grittier, funky sound in the bridge. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Unidentified Flying Tuna Trot by REO Speedwagon This instrumental off “You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish” gives us the opportunity to double dip on the episode's featured album by REO Speedwagon.

What the Riff?!?
1980 - December: REO Speedwagon “Hi Infidelity”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 20, 2021 36:12

Hi Infidelity would be the biggest selling rock album of 1981, and would be the high water mark for REO Speedwagon.  The band at the time was Kevin Chronin on lead vocals, Gary Richrath on lead guitars, Neal Doughty on keyboards, Bruce Hall on bass, and Alan Gratzer on drums.REO Speedwagon started out in 1967, and the name comes from a 1915 truck called the REO Speed Wagon.  Neal Doughty saw the name on the blackboard in his History of Transportation class as an electrical engineering major at the University of Illinois in Champaign, and thought the name was cool.  The original lead singer for their 1971 debut album was Terry Luttrell, who would go on to be the vocalist for Starcastle after a breakup that involved Luttrell being left in a cornfield after a bad gig.  Kevin Cronin came in for their second album, would leave during the recording sessions on their third album, then return in 1976 for their sixth album.  Cronin and Richrath wrote a lot of the music from 1977 on, and around this time long time bassist Greg Philbin left the band, either because of the changing split in money as the band became more commercially successful, or because of his lifestyle issues affecting the music (depending on who you ask).  Bruce Hall joined thereafter for the recording of the album "You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish."  That was their first top 40 album, including the singles "Roll with the Changes" and "Time for Me to Fly."Hi Infidelity put them over the top.  This was a pop-rock crossover, with more commercial appeal than previous rock-oriented efforts.  The big song was the ballad "Keep On Loving You," which was everywhere in early 1981.  High Infidelity would be the biggest selling rock album of 1981, taking the top spot on the Billboard 200, and certified 10 times platinum over time.Thought they had a number of hits through the 1980's, Hi Infidelity would never be topped.  Gary Richrath would leave the band in 1989.  He reunited with the band in a concert in 1998, in 2000, and again in 2013 for a benefit concert.  REO Speedwagon tours today with Doughty, Cronin, and Hall still in the lineup, joined by Dave Amato on guitar (formerly with Ted Nugent) and Bryan Hitt on percussion (formerly of Wang Chung). Don't Let Him GoThis track opens the album, and was the third single released.  Kevin Cronin wrote this hard driving song with a Bo Diddley beat.  The song is based on the experiences of all the band members and is basically a plea to all their girlfriends to have patience with them.Follow My HeartThis is a deeper cut, not one of the singles.  It's basically about a girl that the guy knows is bad news, but he can't decide whether to follow his head or follow his heart.  Gary Richrath wrote this song with songwriter Tom Kelly.Tough GuysKevin Cronin wrote this as a bit of a rebuttal to the "nice guys finish last" trope.  "She doesn't like the tough guys, she doesn't like the rough guys.  She's gonna call your bluff guys, and you better believe it's true - she don't like you."  The opening clip is from a 1937 "Our Gang" (aka "The Little Rascals") episode.  This song wasn't released as a single, but made the mainstream rock chart anyway.Take It on the RunThe second single from the album was written by Gary Richrath and went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song takes on the rumor mill in an interesting way:  "Now, I'm telling you, babe, that I don't think its true, babe, and even if it is, keep this in mind."  The music video to this song was the ninth video played on MTV's first day in August 1981, but technical difficulties resulted in only 12 seconds of the video airing.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:9 to 5 by Dolly Parton (from the motion picture 9 to 5)Working women exact revenge on their boss in this satire starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton. STAFF PICKS:Dreamin' by Cliff RichardBrian's staff pick takes us to a famous British singer.  Leo Sayer helped write this upbeat song.  Richard stated that this was an unusual song for him because it is in a higher range than is typical for Richard.  The song was accumulated in the studio, as a verse would be recorded, then the next written.   (Just Like) Starting Over by John LennonRob features a song that took off the charts shortly after Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman.  Lennon was trying to create a sound that he called his "Elvis-Orbison track," and it had a definite 50's feel to it.  The song was released in October but took off on the charts after his death.I Will Follow by U2Wayne brings us the first single from the debut album by U2.  This single was a staple of fraternity parties across the nation at the time.  Bono wrote this song as a tribute to his mom who died when he was young.  Unusual instruments were used for percussive effect including silverware and breaking bottles. The Turn of a Friendly Card, part 1 by The Alan Parsons ProjectBruce finishes the staff picks with the first part of a 16-minute suite bearing the same name as the album.  The Turn of a Friendly Card was a concept album revolving around gambling, gambling addiction, and what happens to a person who turns to gambling in the midst of a mid-life crisis. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Gold Bug by The Alan Parson's ProjectAn instrumental from "The Turn of a Friendly Card," this song was inspired by a short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe.

New documentary explores the lives of Irish girl orphans shipped to Australia during the famine In the latest radio documentary to be broadcast by Newstalk 106 – 108fm as part of it’s weekly Documentary On Newstalk series, producer J.J. O`Shea looks at the controversial scheme in which over 4000 young orphan women were shipped to Australia from workhouses all over Ireland during the Great Famine in “The Earl Grey Girls” The radio premiere of ‘The Earl Grey Girls’  airs on Newstalk 106-108fm on Sunday 21st June at 7am, with a repeat broadcast airing on Saturday 27th June at 9pm. Podcast goes live after first broadcast.  In the years 1848 to 1850, in the midst of the Great famine, over four thousand young Irish women, teenagers as we would call them today, set sail on a voyage to the unknown. They were travelling to a destination and a way of life utterly different to anything they had yet experienced. The Great Famine National Monumentcc-by-sa/2.0 - © Bruce Hall - geograph.org.uk/p/23194 During the 1840’s an issue of real concern had emerged in Australia. There was a disproportionate amount of men on the British colony. It was said that in the outback the gender balance was eight men to one woman. This was because the majority of convicts sent out to Australia in previous decades had been male, as indeed were the settlers who had been encouraged to travel out on various assisted passage schemes. Women were desperately needed in the workforce, primarily in the role of domestic servants, and, of course, as potential marriage partners. A possible solution emerged in Ireland. In Ireland, during the years of the Great Famine, workhouses offered the only possible hope to numerous famine victims with nowhere else to turn. But they were overcrowded, dirty and disease ridden places. Among the numbers in these workhouses all over the country were thousands of young orphan women and the British Government devised a plan, under the management of Earl Grey, to offer free passage to Australia to some of these women. The idea was to address the gender imbalance in Australia and to help reduce the rising maintenance costs in the burgeoning workhouses. For the British Government it seemed like a clever solution to two problems. “The Earl Grey Girls” tells the story of the young women who travelled to the other side of the world as part of the Earl Grey scheme. It shows how the girls were chosen and transported without any real understanding of what lay ahead. It looks at their subsequent experience in Australia and their attempts to build a life far from home and it considers the animosity shown to the girls in the Australian press that led to the closure of the scheme. In addition the programme seeks to evaluate whether the scheme proved an opportunity or a tragedy for the girls who participated. Interviews with the girl`s descendants in Australia, expert historians from Ireland and Australia, and excerpts from contemporaneous accounts, newspaper articles, letters and diaries are drawn on to create the fullest possible picture of the girls and their legacy. "We can trust ourselves to grow, to adapt, and to change. And we can trust each other to meet us in the place of flowering, the place of hope, the place of courage." Incredibly, this is our last service of the church year. We’ll be doing flower communion, as is the custom of so many UUs this time of year. While we continue to gather online, we’ll celebrate this uniquely UU ritual. Don’t forget to bring your flower! Going to the FBI with no lawyer - and no criminal charges against him - he went undercover, wearing a wire to catch his life-long friends for drug dealing, bribery, loan sharking and murder. This intimate story, told in Charlie's voice, is the first to expose organized crime in Baltimore. It reveals the complex relationship between an informant and his FBI handlers, and explores the tormented mind of a man with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder who faces the consequences of doing the right thing, while turning against his crime family. Wised Up also introduces the one person most responsible for helping Charlie change his life - FBI agent Bruce Hall, a forensic mineralogist who grew up with Charlie in a working class neighborhood in Baltimore's suburbs. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support

Arson, loansharking, drug dealing, extortion - it was all in a day's work for Charlie Wilhelm. In Baltimore, an organized crime syndicate of over 200 men took orders from him and his partner, strong arm enforcer Billy Isaacs. For over twenty years, Charlie lived the sweet life, making $10,000 a week in untaxed cash. ORDERED TO KILL But everything changed in 1995, when Isaacs demanded that Wilhelm take out two men he suspected of cheating him. Charlie Wilhelm didn't want to kill but he didn't want to die, either. Turning to FBI agent Bruce Hall who'd grown up in the old neighborhood with Charlie, he became a double agent, working undercover against his former associates. Danger lay everywhere, from suspicious hoodlums to dirty cops and even a Mob tipster working in the U.S. Attorney's office. One misstep could spell death not only for Charlie, but for his wife and children. Yet Wilhelm's efforts not only saved lives- they resulted in twenty convictions for offenses ranging from bribery and conspiracy to drug dealing and murder. Now, in his own words, Charlie Wilhelm tells his incredible true story of a wild life lived on both sides of the law. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support

Thanksgiving, November, 2019Ashland Oregon This podcast was composed in Ashland Oregon after my brother called me to ask for some “spiritual tools.” I had been on a six week journey to several cities and when I arrived in Ashland, I got off the road and stayed for a month. I loved every minute of it. What a gift! I was thrilled of course when my brother called to talk with me about the power of the mind to heal the body. He believed absolutely that we human-beings can heal ourselves and he wanted me to join forces with him to be part of his healing program. My thoughts were swirling around like falling leaves. I began to think about his life as an electrician, his generous personality and recently, his diagnosis of prostate cancer. I wondered how I would condense everything that I had learned into a short healing composition for him. What kind of spiritual toolbox or psychological key? How many tools? How many keys? Knowing that my brother like most Americans today are stressed to the max, I wondered how he was taking the time now to rest and recharge his batteries. Every day, as I walked through town, into the magnificent autumn beauty of Lithia Park, I prayed for an answer. Just like I did in 1987 for our Mother who had been diagnosed with stage 4 Non-Hodgekins lymphoma. She was 57. Upon hearing that unearthly shout - “You humans can heal yourselves with color, sound and vibration,” I took it very much to heart and soul. It would take many years for me to act upon that command but I did build a healing center and my brother was my electrician. Now, he is 54 and here we are again, 24 years later with the same forewarning. We all know someone who is dealing with cancer. Look at all the cancer clinics and hospitals dedicated to this human suffering. They are still researching for cures. As we continue to wrestle with all of the implications and misadventures of our humanity, including life and death, we are listening to and reading about incredible healing stories from people everywhere who are overcoming their disease and emotional pain. How are they doing it? What has given them such knowledge, peace and love that leads them directly back to the truth of their own divine healing? Let me share with you my thoughts and prayers in this 13 minute healing directive, along with quotes from Dr. Joseph P. Murphy and the incredible healing power of Michael Stillwater’s music. Ashland, Oregon! What a magical little town. Decorated with fall foliage, it set the backdrop for their seasons’ end of all the Shakespearean plays and shows. My timing was perfect to be there mid October and find Shrew’s Cottage B&B and Bruce Hall, owner, extraordinaire. Everyday that I spent there, something wonderful happened. I felt like I was in a leading role, playing myself in this lovely little pocket of America, full of fellow thespians, artisans, writers and flower makers. Protected by the Siskiyou Mountains and Oregon Cascades, there existed an atmosphere of high creativity and sincere community. Everyone that I met had a great story of how they came to be there and how they too, felt like they belonged. It reminded me of my own childhood, fifty years ago in America, unpretentious and unafraid. Along with farm to table fresh food and numerous wineries, there were plenty of cannabis and CBD products wrapped anyway that you wanted. The smell of hemp harvesting farms was a unique experience for me as well as some interaction with the unperturbed homeless. All I had to do was walk out the front door of my lovely little Baroque Room and I found myself in the next lines of the play. Built into my story line, of course, was the continuum of Mystic Grace in its spiritual and material pursuits; the understanding of our humanity and our divinity. I could not have found myself in a better place to retreat, enjoy the electric atmosphere of Ashland and create the shortest podcast I have ever done. I did find one key which fits the toolbox, LOVE. And I will make a thousand duplicates, as many as you and I need.

“Overwhelmed and unable to produce the audio that could even begin to express a slither of what I feel. Stage 4 cancer, is this really happening? Wait, if I refuse to hear this, maybe can I preserve my precious reality? So, shut up Doc.. Because embracing a diagnosis that can literally kill me in seconds, is not something I can do.” This heart wrenching mind conversation is not a figment of my imagination used to solicit an emotional response. Nope, this was a real broken moment for Marcia Hall after learning she had stage 4 cancer. If you or a family member has faced a moment similar to this but been unable to process forward... Marcia courageously shares her journey in a very special way for you. Tune in and hear how faith snatched her out of one the most darkest place in her life.      More about Marcia Hall: She is a woman of God, a loving Pastors wife, a mother, an entrepreneur, a friend, a mentor, and a motivational speaker. Marcia is married to Bruce Hall and together they have four children (one child decease). God instructed them to start a church, where people could come to hear and learn of Him so their hearts can be healed, and their mind transformed and lives enriched by the Word of God. Transforming Ministries has blessed many people inside the church walls and outside the church walls. Marcia survived the Big C (Cancer) just three year ago as she followed Gods plan to create a service that is unique, but meet a great need in the community.  Mrbubblez Inc. (mobile showers for the homeless), their motto is “I See You & I Care” which is now blessing our homeless neighbors today in the Tampa Bay area.

The fabled city of Timbuktu has recently been a center of conflict between the French military and Islamic militants. Complicating the clash are tensions within Mali among the country's ethnic groups. In a live "Office Hours" webcast interview Feb. 8, Duke professor Bruce Hall explains some of the historical and cultural context of the conflict. Watch the interview live on this webpage or on Duke Today. Post a question for Hall on Twitter using @DukeOfficeHours or the Duke Office Hours Facebook page. "There is nothing 'less racial' about the situation in Northern Mali because of a history of 'mixing' than anywhere else," Hall told the International Business Times in an article published last week. "Race is not about the biology; it is about the ideas and practices that link biological traits to value which are claimed to be transmissible inter-generationally. "In fact, in the absence of a strong international security presence, it seems very likely to me that racialized violence will occur on a much greater scale than it has so far," he said. Joining Hall is Duke senior Jennifer Denike, who completed a study abroad program in Mali in the fall of 2011. Hall is the author of "A History of Race in Muslim West Africa, 1600-1960." At Duke, he is an assistant professor of history and African and African American Studies. This year he is a visiting scholar at Stanford University and participated in the interview via Skype. "Office Hours" is Duke's live webcast series for the university community, and others, to engage with professors about their research and scholarship.
