Thank you in advance and we'll see you next week for another episode of practical strategy and inspiration to move your independent practice forward.ShownotesI was attracted to this book because one of the authors, Libby, is an autistic 11 year old and that felt like a voice I needed to listen to. The book tells the story of Tally, an 11 year old autistic girl as she navigates the transition to secondary school. Interspersed with the narrative are short autsim fact sheets from Tally explaining concepts like "pathological demand avoidance" and the reasons autistic people might engage in certain behaviours from her point of view. I was thrilled to read a realistic depiction of autism in a girl with a pathological demand avoidance profile. I find this is a term that is not generally well understood, even amongst psychologists and the warm, engaging and, at times, heart-shaking writing encouraged the kind of empathy that autistic people do not always receive. I particularly valued the insight into what it feels like for a child who looks like they are being defiant or furious but is actually feeling terrified. As a mum and as a professional I know this is a book that has helped me to connect more deeply and engage more fully with the autistic experience. I'd recommend it to any of you regardless of specialty. Check it out here.PS. If you want to know more about PDA I very highly...
Your favorite award winning podcast is back (we're milking this for everything we can). Matt and Jay discuss the horror of going back into the office occasionally, living with teenagers, and cars stories. They hit some news, including the status of a couple of Star Wars movies that were in pre-production, Loki reactions from others (neither of us has finished it yet), a couple of stories from MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, fancasting of Batman villains, a video on how Count Dooku was right about the Jedi, and more on the direction of the MCU. We then move to homework, including Flamin' Hot, Once Upon A Deadpool, Gen V, Shoresy, Vice, American Made, BlackkKlansman, and Becky. This week's featured beer was Perennial Artisan Ale's Sump Coffee Stout. The featured music was "Can You See Me?" from Catholic Guilt. You can find them at: Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter The intro music was The Mad Dog Remix of The Other Side by the Red Hot Chili Peppers; it was created by Madelyn Tierney. Tonight on the KRBD Evening Report, we'll look at some of the big questions facing Ketchikan's port vendor program plus “Can You See Me?”: a local artist opens a new exhibit in the Main Street Gallery and an unforeseen impact of a busy tourist season in Juneau.
Michael Babcock takes the hosting chair today while Steven is away, and immediately jumps into tech with a discussion on how to make sure you are always in the frame when it comes to video conferencing on your computer. Shaun talks about his experience with the fantastic Windows app Can You See Me and Michael tells us of a similar app for the Mac called CenteredHead. After more talk on everything from Windows vs. Mac and browser problems, it's on to a listener lesson for Shaun regarding his trouble using a liquid level indicator. Just how do you make the perfect cup of tea or coffee, and will Shaun admit to being a secret finger dipper? Listener Ken also emails us about his recent purchase of the Leaden Wireless Bluetooth MP3 polarized sunglasses. With a price tag of only $15.99, just how do they compare to the far more expensive options out there in the audio sunglasses market? There's more listener feedback with a voicemail from Scout giving his opinion on the reasons why people want stand-alone devices such as the Victor Reader Stream 3 and the SensePlayer. But with the prices of these devices creeping close to the cost of smartphones are they pricing themselves out of the market? Finally, Wayne emails in to share his experiences with sonar mobility devices such as the UltraCane and Sunu Band. For many blind people, the challenge of using a webcam in a meeting means knowing whether or not you are actually in frame, and in a professional setting it is quite important we look our best and don't offer our colleagues a view of up our nose! iPhone users who use the VoiceOver screenreader get extra information via the Camera app that gives audio feedback to let the user know where they are in frame, however most of us use a PC usually to conduct our meetings and we don't get similar feedback from those devices. However, that has all changed now thanks to the development of a new app called Can You See Me. It's been created by blind software developer Ben Mustille-Rose and he talked to Blind Guy Steven Scott on today's podcast to explain how the app came about, and how he created it. Keep your feedback coming by emailing hello@blindguytalkstech.com or call 0204 571 3354 and leave us a voicemail.

Can You See Me? By Gökçe İrten
Ami Sands Brodoff is the award-winning author of three novels and two volumes of stories. The Sleep of Apples, her new story collection centres on nine closely-linked characters who confront crises related to mental illness, mortality, and gender identity. Ami's novel, In Many Waters, focuses on three orphans whose lives intersect on the island of Malta, and grapples with our current refugee crisis. The White Space Between won The Canadian Jewish Book Award for Fiction (The Vine Award), and is the story of a mother and daughter struggling with the impact of the Holocaust. Bloodknots, a volume of thematically linked stories about marginalized families on the edge, dramatizes the threads that bind people together and the ones that unravel without warning. Bloodknots was a finalist for The Re-Lit Award. Her debut novel, Can You See Me?penetrates into both the point-of-view of a young man with schizophrenia and the sister who struggles to help him. The novel was nominated for The Pushcart Prize and is a recommended book of NAMI (The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill). https://amisandsbrodoff.com This episode also available at YouTube: https://youtu.be/Iz4aSmNRQqk You can support the podcast at our Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/vanessa23carl Your support is greatly appreciated!

Ami Sands Brodoff is the author of several novels and short story collection. Her latest novel, “The Sleep of Apples,” is set in Montreal's gritty, gentrifying Saint-Henri neighborhood. This linked collection of short stories is a moving dramatization of the imperfect lives we all lead told through nine interconnected narrators. Throughout the book, Sands Brodoff, the award-winning author of five previous books, presents characters and events inspired by her personal experiences. In one story, Collier, a gender-fluid, non-binary teen forms an unlikely connection with Rachel, a recreation therapist at The Children's Hospital Psychiatric Ward. Rachel is a breast cancer survivor, as is Sands Brodoff. As well, Sands Brodoff is the mother of a transgender son and a gay son. Here other titles include “Can You See Me?” “The White Space Between” and “Bloodknots,” among others. During this podcast, Ami is asked: — Why she writes— What gets her high when writing— At what age she determined to be a writer— What writing does for her— Her subject matter— How she creates characters— The best writing advice ever received— Etc. Libby Scott is fourteen years old. She loves hot chocolate, Taylor Swift and lives in Kent with her family. Her dad is a musician and Libby's mum is an education consultant and conference speaker. Libby is also autistic. For many years, it was a battle for her to understand herself and for her family and friends to understand her. Following an autism diagnosis, Libby was finally able to understand herself better and express how she felt. In 2018, her mum Kim, decided to share a piece of Libby's writing online. The piece went viral and was liked and retweeted thousands of times. The next year she wrote her first book with co-writer Rebecca Wescott. It is called "Can You See Me", a story about an autistic girl called Tally who tries to navigate school and her social life. Now fourteen, Libby is publishing her third book called "Ways To Be Me", which focuses on the process of getting a diagnosis. It's a brilliant and extraordinary book that not only will help many people understand autism better, but one that will give hope and perhaps more importantly, a voice to others with autism. Libby is a remarkable young lady. And it was a great honor for her and her mum Kim to join me on this episode of Life Interrupted. If you have been through life events similar to those described in this episode and you need someone to talk to, please contact The Samaritans, on 116 123 And if you'd like to share your thoughts with Simon, he'd love to hear from you: Twitter @SimonThomasSky
The Labour and Cooperative MP Stella Creasy is threatening legal action over her forthcoming maternity leave cover. Backbench MPs are currently allowed to take informal maternity leave, but not all their duties are covered during their absence. For instance they can employ office staff to help with constituency issues Ms Creasy says she's currently only being offered two thirds of her salary to employ a suitable replacement but she says that won't cover important tasks like meeting Ministers, media work or doing school visits. Also a replacement is unable to speak in the House of Commons or attend parliamentary committees. Ms Creasy has said: "I think every woman should be able to have paid maternity cover, proper cover - it's not just about being paid, it's that somebody else will be doing that job.” She may just be 13 years old but Libby Scott has just released her third novel ‘Ways to Be Me' in collaboration with the author Rebecca Westcott. Along with the hugely successful Can You See Me? and Do you Know Me?, the three novels feature the story of Tally who is autistic. The books have been widely praised for their realistic portrayal of autism. Although not autobiographical Tally's story is partly based on Libby's own experiences of being autistic herself. This latest one - a prequel to Can You See Me? - goes back in time to the period just before she gets a diagnosis age 10. Libby and her mum Kym join Chloe. A humanitarian ceasefire has just been called but since November last year the fighting between the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and government forces in Ethiopia has left thousands of people dead. More than two million have been displaced and 350,000 pushed towards famine. There are reports of women who were kidnapped by soldiers and held as sexual slaves. Chloe discusses the situation with BBC Africa Correspondent in Nairobi - Vivienne Nunis and Rita Kahsay, co-ordinator of the Tigray Youth Network based in the UK. Fertility clinics in the UK are removing an unsafe number of eggs from women hoping to have IVF, according to a new study. Looking at data from UK fertility clinics between 2015 and 2018, researchers found that some were retrieving far too many eggs from women, reporting cases of up to 50 eggs being removed in a single procedure. The ideal 'safe yield' is around 12 eggs. Chloe Tilley discusses the implications with Joyce Harper, Professor of Reproductive Science at the Institute of Women's health at UCL, and the author of Your Fertile Years. As we know travellers are obliged to quarantine in a hotel at their own cost after returning from countries on the UK's red list, where Covid infection rates are high. They spend 10 nights in their room and are allowed out for daily exercise only when accompanied by a guard. Private security companies have been hired by the government to ensure hotel guests observe quarantine rules. Kathy Godolphin had a disturbing experience saying she experienced sexual harassment at a hotel after returning from working on a conservation and anti-poaching project in Zimbabwe. She joins Chloe Tilley to discuss the aftermath of that ten days. Presented by Chloe Tilley Producer: Louise Corley Editor: Beverley Purcell

This week on the program I spoke to Jy wright, a film producer. He is a producing a short film about child trafficking, which is in the process of being submitted to a film festival. I think he is an amazing person and the work he's doing is worthy of our support. He did a Kickstarter program to raise money to do his production and he quickly reached his goal within two weeks. I'm so excited for Jy's interview to be aired this Saturday. The movie is called Can You See Me? If you would like to support his project, please email him at jytwright@gmail.com.
Anxiety was commonplace for me in 2020 especially being a transgender woman. Lockdown meant more working and socialising from home, which inevitably meant meeting more people for the first time. Switching on a webcam means everyone can see you for the first time and that can feel uncomfortable and fuel anxiety. But, remember you are beautiful and there is no one else like you. CAN YOU SEE ME? I cannot breathe, I am frozen in space. Will they seethe? I feel so out of place. I cannot find air, My lungs are tight. Thoughts are where? My head feels light. I am losing my voice. How will I sound? Do I have a choice? My head starts to pound. I check my reflection, My skin is pale. Do I have an infection? I feel the urge to bail. Panic setting in, STOP! I am who I am! Wipe away the tear drop, And switch on the webcam. You are beautiful, You are true, Your soul is immutable, There is no one like you.
