Over the last few years, I have returned more often than I could have imagined to the work of Reinhold Niebuhr and his vision of Christian Realism. Between the rise of Trump, growing disappointment in Biden, and inaction on the most pressing issues... to name a few... my inherent optimism in the democratic experiment has waned. So, I decided to have Dr. Kevin Carnahan on the podcast to unpack Christian Realism and how this particular theological lens could help me wrestle with my growing disease. Kevin Carnahan is Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO. He recently stepped down after five years of service as co-editor of the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, is the former president of The Niebuhr Society, and author of multiple books and articles on religion, ethics, and politics. He lives in Columbia, MO with his wife and two daughters. “One of the most eye-opening things when writing this book was my realization how influential we are as leaders. We create a ripple effect that goes out into the world.” - Jim Blake We have been raised in a culture that tell us hard work is the only way to be successful, but self-care often gets left out of the equation. Spiritual seeker and Reverend at Unity World Headquarters, Jim Blake, knows firsthand what happens when we neglect self-care, especially in times of adversity. During today's show, Dr. Michelle Robin invites him to share more about what inspired him to write his latest book called The Zen Executive: Gems of Wisdom for Enlightened Leadership. One of those things being that if the systems are “off” inside of you, you aren't making the best decisions for your company. His new book aims to help leaders tackle their well-being and take those small steps he would personally advise in their shoes coming from his own personal experience. Rev. Jim also shares some things leaders should think about when it comes to creating a healthy company culture – and it starts with being an example to your team. About Today's Guests: Reverend Jim Blake has more than three decades of study and service in New Thought traditions and organizations. He rejoined Unity World Headquarters as CEO in 2016, having previously served as Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Operations from 2006 to 2011. Prior to being named CEO, he served with global leading innovators in the traffic and energy industries. Rev. Blake has more than 20 years of executive leadership experience with some of the fastest growing and most innovative companies in North America. Jim has a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Central Methodist University and a Masters of Divinity from the Johnnie Colemon Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 2021. To make progress towards a common goal communication is key. Especially when it comes to trust in government. According to the Pew Research Center: Only two-in-ten Americans say they trust the government in Washington to do what is right “just about always” (2%) or “most of the time” (19%). Trust in the government has declined somewhat since last year, when 24% said they could trust the government at least most of the time. One person who is working extremely hard to change such a narrative is Derek Diesner. He currently serves as the Media Relations & Communications Coordinator with the city of Glendale Arizona. He says the key to public trust is communication and building positive and sustainable relationships. Prior to his current role, Diesner served as the Coordinator of Communications at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Avondale. He also worked at Mesa Community College as the Sports Information Specialist and with the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) as the Social Media Coordinator. Prior to joining Mesa Community College, Diesner worked at The Western Journal as their Community Manager. Prior to TWJ, Diesner served as the Parish Communications Coordinator at St. Helen Roman Catholic Parish in Glendale, Arizona. Before joining the Church, Diesner served as the Sports Information Director at OUAZ. He had previously served in the same capacity at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri, after spending time as the SID at Arizona Christian University in Phoenix and at Arizona Western College in Yuma. Diesner graduated from Western Illinois University in May of 2010. Derek has worked in radio, minor league baseball, and college athletics in Arkansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kansas, South Carolina, and now Arizona. He joined me this week to have an in-depth conversation about building relationships and effective communication in government and beyond. #rianmarques #itabuna #masl

Join Pastor Travis Hall and guest Coach Kyle Gerdeman as they speak about his coaching experience and the elements that make character development happen. In this episode, Coach Kyle expounds on why it is essential to see everybody going towards a goal as 'unfinished work' and what difference having this mindset produces. To potently unearth potential in people, for Coach Kyle, there needs to be a realistic recognition of how hard the process will be. Tune in as they put the spot on the Transformational Truth #20 - Cultivating a person's potential multiplies a team's impact. Ready your notes, as there will be a ton to take away from this episode. In this episode you will learn: · How important is locking in on an individual's potential? · It is not just about the wins. · Know who they are, where they come from, and what they've been through. · How do you recognize potential? · Great programs rest on… · …and so much more. About Kyle Gerdeman: Kyle Gerdeman enters his second year at the helm of the Lindenwood men's basketball program in the 2020-21 season. In his first year head coaching in 2019-20, Gerdeman guided the Lions to a 12-16 record, including a 6-14 mark within the GLVC. Under Gerdeman, the Lions played some of their best basketball at home, finishing 9-6 within the friendly confines of Hyland Arena during the season. Lindenwood was known for its high-powered offense, as the team was ranked second in the GLVC in points per game as a unit, putting up 81.2 points per game. Gerdeman came to Lindenwood after spending seven seasons at Central Michigan, playing an integral part in the Chippewas success on and off the court. The Chippewas reached the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals in 2018-19, finishing the season with a 23-12 record. Over the last five years, the team never had a losing season, including three seasons with at least 20 wins. Over his seven seasons at Central Michigan, the Chippewas posted a 121-108 record (.528). Gerdeman oversaw the program's academic success off the court, which took major strides under his direction. During his tenure at Central Michigan, 19 Chippewas earned Academic All-MAC honors. From 2014-16, the program placed more student-athletes on the academic honor roll than any other institution in the conference. Before he arrived at Central Michigan, Gerdeman spent three years as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State, preceded by three years as the head coach at Moberly Area Community College (Mo.). Gerdeman, a native of Wright City, Mo., totaled a combined nine seasons serving as an assistant coach at Mineral (Mo.) Area College, at Moberly, and East Central College (Mo.). Gerdeman holds an undergraduate degree from Southeast Missouri State University and a master's degree in education from Central Methodist University. There’s been a long time between the time I spoke with Cody Goodwin of The Des Moines Register for International Podcast Day. We’d just finished up with the Night of Conflict out in Sioux City, Iowa and were conversing about the state of wrestling coverage. Part of that wrestling coverage discussion is here on Episode 644 of Short Time where the 2019 NWMA National Wrestling Journalist of the Year talks about his foray into podcasting with In The Room, how he talked his bosses at the paper into starting one and how he’s used the medium to cover angles that don’t often get the space in the paper. You can listen to In The Room wherever podcasts are found (or by clicking here). SHORT TIME SHOTS I went almost two and a half hours on Saturday night as what was supposed to be Burroughs-Taylor turned into Adeline-Tamyra. To be balanced, it would be Gray-Mensah-Stock, but that’s too many hyphens to write out cleanly. What did I go two and a half hours with? Watchin’ Wrestling. This was the idea when I built the Speakeasy and I want to thank Bryan Hazard, Tony Rotundo, Zach Bogle, J.P. Pearson, Dysen Gould, Earl Smith, Jeremy Lanthorn and Austin Early for joining in the discussion. We sat around, had some beverages (not Dysen) and watched the wrestling and talked about it. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do with this studio. Burroughs and Taylor will face off on January 13 on Flowrestling as Taylor had some contact tracing that forced him to delay. Speaking of Burroughs, he was on The Joe Rogan Experience, which is a Spotify exclusive, for a while. I’m still trying to finish it because it was a long episode, but so far, we as a sport are better because we have such great ambassadors like Jordan Burroughs. The NWCA released the new Top 25 today and Illinois and Michigan State entered the Top 25, giving the Big Ten 12 teams ranked in the Top 25 for the first time in history. Michigan State started out the year ranked at No. 21, but dropped out after a week. The Spartans popped back in and prior to the preseason ranking two weeks ago, the last time a wrestling team based in East Lansing was ranked on the college mats was 2009. Northern Colorado moved up to No. 23. Bear down. Also, checked the mail today and got some socks and a t-shirt from Dr. Joe Parisi, an administrator at Central Methodist University and former head wrestling coach at Lindenwood. Also in the mail was the sweatshirt I got from contributing to San Francisco State University. Hat tip to Jason Welch. Too bad the Gators aren’t wrestling this year. I have never once seen a bird have sex with a bee, yet when I was a child, sex education heralded this fact all around the country. Birds were banging bees. Bees were banging birds. Adults made it the spearhead of any conversation about discussing sexuality with their children. I took great pains after that to follow bees and birds around to try to observe this marvel of modern sex education. Despite all my tracking, all my days spent climbing trees and watching birds, all I got was splinters. I never once saw a bee even try to land a bird. As an adult, I think I understand it better now. The adults using this archaic metaphor harbored too much shame about sex to openly discuss it with anyone, much less their own children. We hide sex. We shut down conversations about sexuality. We label clinical terms about sex, such as masturbation or vagina, as taboo or “bad words,” things to never discuss, even around impolite company. We even lie to our own children about our own sex lives in the hopes they will not emulate any bad decisions, but this just means they aren’t able to learn anything from us, including how to avoid any pitfalls or mistakes we made in our own sex lives. There once was a day when your good old dad and mom took a little roll in the hay, and amazingly enough so did their parents, your grandparents. Sex is a part of every adult’s life, no matter the age. Most of us grow up shielded from the sex lives of the previous generations, and this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Your children do not need to know the intimate details of your sex life, but when we hide the fact that we even have sex from the younger generations it teaches them that it is something to hide and be ashamed about in the first place. Sex is a part of normal human biology, just like breathing, eating, defecating, and childbirth. Today we discuss aging and sexuality with our guest, sex therapist Angela Schubert. We also cover nursing homes, eating disorders, sexual trauma, and a few other topics. About our Guest: Angela Schubert works at Crossroads Counseling, LLC and is a full time professor and director at Central Methodist UniversityAngie Schubert has a PhD in Counselor Education and supervision and a Mastersdegree in mental health counseling from the University of Missouri St. Louis.
