Charleston Wine + Food is a multi-day wine and food festival that takes place the first full weekend each March, and I have covered it as a media person, and/or participated as talent for all of its going-on 18 years excepting one. The following interview took place live in the midst of the Culinary Village at this year's festival, and I'm sharing it now because I already have the 2024 festival on the brain. Not only is my behind the scenes planning well underway, but tickets go on sale to the public on October 19. I lovingly call it my Super Bowl, because it is, and the connections and education from it seeds much of the work I do. One of those relationships is with Alyssa Maute Smith, my conversation partner here and the festival's Executive Director. Alyssa, a native Charlestonian, stepped into the Interim role in April of 2022, having successfully served as the festival's Marketing + Communications Director for 6 years, then in 2023 was officially granted the title. There's no mistaking the energy of Charleston Wine + Food, and Alyssa's enthusiasm for the work and for this community she calls home is a good compass for its future. And I'm proud to call her my friend.
Charleston continues to be one of our favorite food cities to visit, and the Charleston Wine + Food Festival is one of the great gateways to exploring the scene. We were fortunate to be invited to this event again in 2023 and had an absolutely wonderful time both at the festival events and eating around the city. Tune in to hear about plenty of barbecue and other culinary delights we were able to partake in this year. An enormous thanks to the Charleston Wine + Food team for giving us such a great platform to continue to highlight both the festival and the city. Start planning now to get to the festival March 6-10, 2024! Instagram: chswineandfood Website: Charlestonwineandfood.com
Jeremy Carter of Tarpon Cellars is more than just a winemaker; he is a student of taste, and he built his palate first in the South. A Georgia native, Jeremy attended Florida State University before moving to the Napa Valley in 2007 for an internship at his uncle's winery in Rutherford. He would soon hone his winemaking acumen through various positions at Luna, Chappellet, and Duckhorn while also studying winemaking at UC Davis. We recorded this interview during the Charleston Wine + Food festival, and this week, Jeremy was named one of the VinePair 50, a big accolade from the publication that is recognizing talented individuals doing great things to make the drinks space better and more creative. As VinePair writes, “Carter's goal is to introduce American wine lovers to grapes prominent in international regions but uncommon in California markets.” And I'd add that he is creating wine that pairs perfectly with cuisine and climate in the South. For Jeremy, it's beyond the bottle to the sustainability, the community, and the communing around the table.

Although this show's focus is usually the American South, my own culinary borders -- and I suspect yours too -- are actually a lot more fluid. Today, I welcome you to explore that in conversation with two chefs from the recent Charleston Wine + Food festival who inspire me to be bold, have confidence, respect the reader and the guest, and always remember food is a language. Maryam Ghaznavi, the force behind Malika, South Carolina's first-ever Pakistani restaurant, and soon-to-be-opened Ma'am Saab, is bringing a taste of Pakistani culture and cuisine to the Lowcountry. She and her husband, Raheel, are expressing their culinary heritage with confidence and enthusiasm, and the results are nothing short of delicious. Also on the mic is Fatima Khawaja. She graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 2012, and after working in some of NYC's most iconic restaurants, is now the Test Kitchen Manager for Saveur, which means she's edited my work multiple times, and she's developing her own produce-focused column for the magazine. Together, they explore what it means to express cultural heritage through food from two unique perspectives, and I am joyfully along for the ride. Please note: So you can tell the voices apart, they introduce themselves at the beginning of this audio.

The most significant crop in the world, rice is a staple in the diets of more than half of the Earth's people. Chinese lore claimed it was a gift from the animals after a flood; eons ago, the Japanese paid their taxes with rice; in the American South, rice became the cash crop for plantation owners at the expense of the enslavement of thousands of Africans. At a family-style dinner during the Charleston Wine + Food Festival, chefs came together to create a meal that pays homage to each of their stories and explores how food, specifically rice, can bridge the gap between cultures. Dominick Lee, Kevin Mitchell, and Matthew Raiford discuss the history of Carolina gold, talk about regional dishes, and share family stories. HRN On Tour is powered by Simplecast.
