Episode 115 Notes: We dive into the perils of Wine Drinking, Liz Phair, Jaime's hat, and why Lou doesn't go to later shows. We also write some primo fan fiction on the spot about an electric rat and our most “thirst trappy” president. The thought of it still makes me feel a little sick to the tum-tum Most importantly, We discuss a book that has been mentioned several times on this podcast: “Sweet Blood” by Pete Hautman. Music-wise, we cover Wipes, Manuela Iwansson, Pleasure Venom, and Chinese Black Metal Band Hoplite (or “Ὁπλίτης). Songs featured in Episode 115: “Wipes” - Frogger “Manuela Iwansson” - Boys of Summer Hoplite and Pleasure Venom were discussed and not actually featured. Pleasure Venom kind of fell victim to me buying the vinyl and not having a download code and me being too cheap to buy the same album twice, and “Hoplites” is a bit difficult to find on account that the name is spelled out in Greek. Check out trashsouthstreet.com to sample these bands and see a totally hawt pic of the “Jaime hat”. Also discussed, but not featured are BoyGenius the Screaming Females (album out now), the Worriers, and Shana Cleveland Find us at: www.trashsouthstreet.com trashsouthstreet@gmail.com Facebook.com/TSS Apple Music Amazon Pdcats

Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly newspaper column.Wine drinking tips 1-18-2023As life semi-returns to pre-Covid normal, we return to restaurants and order wine. We have folks over for dinner. We pay attention to things besides vaccinations and masks. Observations, tips.• At a fancy restaurant, what do you do when the sommelier presents the cork? Easy: Nothing. The cork presentation is a vestige of a world long past. The cork was examined to ensure the wine in the bottle matched the claim on the label. If you wish to save the cork as a memento of your evening, feel free. Otherwise, let it lay.• You want to set a proper table to impress. You know the basics. Spoons-knives on the right, forks on the left. Where do glasses go? In traditional setting, there are three glasses. Water glass goes on the right above the dinner knife. White wine glass goes further to the right above the soup spoon. The red wine glass goes on the right, centered above the water and white wine glasses. Now you are at your hoity-toity best. By the way, pour good wine and serve a delicious meal and it doesn't really matter where you place utensils and glasses.• Fancy wineglass makers will sell you a specific glass for almost every wine you pour. Do you need them to fully appreciate wine? No. You easily can make do with one all-purpose glass—a large white wine glass works well. If you want more, go with a white wine glass, a large red wine glass, and a sparkling wine glass that is not a narrow flute.• Is there a “correct” way to hold your wine glass? This is not really a Miss Manners issue. It is a best practices suggestion. Hold the wine glass by its stem or its foot rather than cupping the bowl in your hand. When you hold by the bowl, you warm the wine. You also leave fingerprints and oil from your hand on the bowl. Neither of these are good outcomes, but it also is not the end of the world or a klaxon warning of gaucheness if you hold by the bowl. Enjoy the wine any way you wish, but consider the stem or foot hold.Tasting notes• Scheid Family Wines VDR Very Dark Red 2020 is deep, dark wine that showcases two grapes rarely used together as sole grapes in a blend—petite sirah and petit verdot. $24-25 Link to my review• Torre de Oña Finca Martelo Rioja Reserva 2015 is mouth-filling with rich, dark fruits.$33-40. How do digital corks allow winemakers to participate in the resale of their wines among collectors? What are tasting tokens, and what exciting new experiences do they offer both winemakers and consumers? What new trends and technologies will impact the wines you drink in the future?   In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm interviewing David Garrett, the co-founder of a global non-fungible token (NFT) wine club, Club dVIN.   You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Three of you are going to win a personally signed copy of David Garrett's gorgeous book, The Winemakers of Paso Robles. This Californian wine region produces amazing wines.   How to Win To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and tell me that you'd like to win the book. I'll select the winners randomly from those who participate. Good luck!   Highlights How does NFC technology increase the detailed provenance data available for wine? How do digital corks allow winemakers to participate in value creation in the aftermarket? What are tasting tokens, and what exciting new opportunities do they provide for connecting winemakers and consumers? How does NFT technology make it significantly easier to track down wine counterfeiters? What makes Club dVIN's process more environmentally friendly? How have NFTs been used to raise millions for charity in collaboration with renowned wine critic Robert Parker? Why is 2019 Château Cos D'estournel David's go-to wine?   Key Takeaways I love the idea that winemakers can participate in the profit from reselling their wines via digital corks. It's very similar to painters and other artists who should be able to accrue some of the value in secondary markets like auctions. Tasting tokens provide some exciting new experiences for winemakers and consumers to connect more deeply. I enjoyed David's discussion of other new trends and technologies that will impact the wines we drink in the future.   Join me on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube Live Join the live-stream video of this conversation on Wed at 7 pm ET on Instagram Live Video, Facebook Live Video or YouTube Live Video. I want to hear from you! What's your opinion of what we're discussing? What takeaways or tips do you love most from this chat? What questions do you have that we didn't answer? Want to know when we go live? Add this to your calendar: https://www.addevent.com/calendar/CB262621   About David Garrett Since graduating from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in political science, David Garrett has spent more than 25 years in the fields of tech, wine and finance. In 1994, he co-founded IntraACTIVE, a software company that built the original Intranet for the US Navy. After he sold his company in 2004, he co-founded The Vines of Mendoza, developing more than 1,500 acres of vineyard land in Argentina as well as a five -star resort and restaurant. In 2013, he led a group of investors to buy the largest vineyard in Priorat, Spain. A number of Halachic authorities, including the Rama (Rav Moshe Isserles of Cracow, 1525-1572) and the Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), record a custom to pour some wine out of the Habdala cup after the conclusion of Habdala, and then extinguish the candle in the wine that was poured. It is also customary to take some of the leftover wine and place it on one's eyes and face. This is done for the purpose of Hibub Misva – to demonstrate our love and affection for the Misvot. The Hid"a (Rav Haim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806) emphasizes that one should not underestimate the importance of "Shiyureh Misva" – the "leftovers" of a Misva. Showing our love for that which had been used for a Misva, even if it only the "leftovers," is very significant, and has the power to save a person from calamity. The Rama also writes (as understood by the Aruch Ha'shulhan) that it is customary to fill the cup before Habdala all the way to the rim, so that some wine will automatically spill when one lifts the cup, as an overflowing cup can bring blessing. This is mentioned also by the Ben Ish Hai, and this is, indeed, the accepted practice.Although it is customary to add several drops of water to one's cup of wine on other occasions, Rav Haim Vital (1542-1620) taught that this is not done with the Habdala cup.The Shulhan Aruch writes that one may not recite Habdala over bread. Kiddush may be recited over bread, because Halacha requires reciting Kiddush in the framework of a meal, and thus the Kiddush is connected to the bread. Habdala, however, does not need to be recited in the framework of a meal, and thus there is no connection at all between Habdala and bread. As such, one may not recite Habdala over bread. One may, however, recite Habdala over "Hamar Medina." Hacham Bension Abba Shaul (Israel, 1923-1998) and Hacham Ovadia Yosef understand this term as referring to intoxicating beverages which are commonly drunk in the country where one lives. In contemporary society, this would include beer, scotch, cognac, brandy, and the like. (Arak would likely qualify as "Hamar Medina" in Israel; it is doubtful whether it would qualify here in the United States.) Ashkenazim, following the ruling of Rav Moshe Feinstein (Russia-New York, 1895-1986), maintain that even non-alcoholic beverages qualify as "Hamar Medina," and thus they allow reciting Habdala even over milk, tea, coffee and the like. The only criterion according to Ashkenazic tradition is that the beverage must be something that a host would serve to a guest for honor, and not merely because the guest is thirsty. Sephardic tradition, however, as noted by both Hacham Bension Abba Shaul and Hacham Ovadia Yosef, does not follow this view, and allows reciting Habdala only on alcoholic beverages. The Mishna Berura (Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan, 1839-1933) maintains that "Hamar Medina" may be used for Habdala only if one does not have wine. One who has wine must, according to the Mishna Berura, use it for Habdala. Hacham Bension Abba Shaul, however, disagrees, noting a clear distinction between the Shulhan Aruch's formulations in the contexts of Kiddush and Habdala. In discussing the laws of Kiddush, the Shulhan Aruch writes that one who does not have wine may use "Hamar Medina" for Habdala, whereas in the context of Habdala, he writes simply that one is allowed to recite Habdala over "Hamar Medina." The clear implication is that "Hamar Medina" is acceptable for Habdala even if one is able to recite Habdala over wine. Hacham Ovadia Yosef, in Hazon Ovadia, appears to disagree with Hacham Bension's conclusion, as he writes that "one who does not have wine" may recite Habdala over "Hamar Medina." It would therefore appear that one should preferably use wine for Habdala, but one who does not enjoy drinking wine may certainly use beer or other intoxicating beverages, in accordance with Hacham Bension's position.Strictly speaking, it suffices to drink just 1.7 ounces or so of wine from the Habdala cup. However, since there is a debate among the Halachic authorities as to whether one who drinks this amount of the Habdala cup recites a Beracha Aharona, one should preferably drink a full Rebi'it – 3.2 ounces – so that he will be required to recite a Beracha Aharona according to all opinions.Summary: One should preferably use wine for Habdala, but one who does not like wine may use another common alcoholic beverage, such as beer. Although Ashkenazim allow using non-alcoholic beverages for Habdala, Sephardic practice requires using an intoxicating beverage. One should drink at least 3.2 ounces of wine from the Habdala cup. It is customary to fill the cup to the top before Habdala, so that some wine will spill out when one lifts the cup. It is customary after Habdala to spill out some wine and use that wine to extinguish the candle, and to place some wine on one's eyes and face.

This statement was inspired by his friend and colleague Jennifer Hough. Sam shares his personal experience with allowing difficult moments in his life to shape him for the better. Michael J. Gelb is introduced. Michael is a pioneer in the fields of creative thinking, innovative leadership and executive coaching. He is also the author of 17 books including How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci, Discover Your Genius, Innovate Like Edison, and The Art of Connection. As a teen Michael read Man's Search for Meaning and wondered how people could find meaning in their lives during atrocities much like Victor Frankl did. *Segment 2:* Michael shares how he began his career as a public speaker. In high school he was voted “Class Arguer,” so he already had the gift of gab. In graduate school he was invited to speak at a corporate event by a gentleman who was a successful author. The experience had such a strong impact on him that Michael decided to continue public speaking professionally. Michael's first book was about the Alexander technique, which is a method for developing stage presence. He does executive coaching with CEOs using this method and helps them break habits like self-soothing gestures and defensive posture that would make people less confident in their message. You can learn more about this technique in his book “Body Learning: An Introduction to the Alexander Technique.” *Segment 3:* His book, “Mastering the Art of Public Speaking,” was originally written in 1988 under the title, “Present Yourself: Captivate Your Audience with Great Presentation Skills.” He felt that he had learned a tremendous amount and had discovered his voice and wanted to write more books to help others so he wrote, “Present Yourself.” His books also lead to more public speaking opportunities over the years but those events have since been cancelled due to the pandemic. Michael hasn't been on a plane in 14 months. Fortunately for him, before the pandemic he had already begun consulting, speaking, and teaching via Zoom, which made the transition quite easy for him. Very little had to be changed. *Segment 4:* Michael believes the simplest and most actionable tip he can provide is to be really clear about your message and frame your presentation around the impact you would like to have on that audience. Michael recommends that before a presentation or podcast, the speaker should write down three key elements of their presentation; what you want the audience to know, feel, and what you want them to do as a result of your presentation. A classic acronym to remember is KISS, keep it simple speaker. Michal shares one more book with us called, “Wine Drinking for Inspired Thinking.” It is about team building through wine tasting. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started!    Marina: Hi Dr Cabral. I will be finishing the CBO protocol soon and I am a bit scared of integrating the foods that are not in the sensitive guide on a daily basis. Should I be scared about having too much of other foods such as cauliflower, watermelon, mushrooms and any other food that is not listed? I really don’t want to live my life scared about all of these great vegetables/fruits. I am the typical person that can get very paranoid and think that my candida will come back. What are your thoughts on that? Also, I’m not a big drinker but I go out for dinner occasionally and I do enjoy ordering a bottle of wine with my partner. Should I still limit 1 glass of wine per week for the rest of my life to avoid getting yeast overgrowth again? Everything feels so restricted please help! Susan: Hello Dr Cabral, thank you so much for all that you do. You are truly a blessing in our lives. My question is: Why is it that we have to wait until we finish the Candida and bacterial overgrowth protocol before starting the gut rebuilding protocol? Is it because it is virtually impossible to rebuild our gut wall until all the pathogens are eradicated? Katie: I did the organic acids test and hair/tissue mineral analysis test last October 2019. My organic acids test came back great and my minerals test came back with some low minerals but overall great. Recently I have started to get allergy like symptoms and acid reflux which is worse at night to the point I can't sleep and feel like I'm chocking. Do you have a recommended test? I was gonna try the apple cider vinegar too. How many times per day is that recommended. Don: Hi Dr.Cabral, what is the reason my feet are cold even in the summer, when rest of my body is warm? Thanks.Love your book and podcast. Lindsey: Hello Dr Cabral - as always thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I recently ran the big 5 labs and found out that I have quite a bit of yeast and bacterial overgrowth - and leaky gut because of that. I also had high cortisol and with all of the combination of my results was told I am in a constant fight-or-flight mode and have adrenal fatigue. My food sensitivity looked pretty good at first glance, except it was explained that my immune system has been stressed for so long that it has lowered my reactivity to foods so my sensitivities are not showing on the test. I do not have any symptoms of leaky gut, adrenal fatigue, yeast or cortisol, except maybe some brain fog. My digestion is great, no bloating or gas even. I actually thought I had my stress under control and I even took the test during quarantine when my stress was quite low.I am currently parasite cleansing then on to CBO and other supplements from my recommended personalized plan.SO - my question is - if I feel so good and I didn't have any signs of these problems, how will I know when my yeast, cortisol and gut is fixed, or that I am not in fight-or-flight mode? I am now cautious about fasting, and timing of exercise. Also when can I re-test my food sensitivities to get an accurate result? Nancy: Hello Dr. Cabral, I recently tried the Siete brand cassava wraps thanks to you! I love all of your food brand suggestions. My dad is planning on starting the cbo protocol when summer ends and we were wondering if he can eat cassava? We don't see it on the sensitive gut guide but it seems to be gluten-free. Thank you! Mio: Hi Dr Cabral, I am asking this for a friend of mine. I think you would be the only person who may have some insight or idea of what to do for her. She’s 29y/o, quite healthy, has positive outlook on life and in great shape. When she was 14 she took half a bottle of ibuprofen and ended up having the Dr at the hospital give her charcoal to get it out and save her. A year and half later after she was fine and had no issues her kidney started failing. They found she needed a kidney transplant later on. Since then she’s been doing Hemo dialysis 3x a week at the hospital and has (can’t write whole name because I don’t know) FSGS kidney condition. She also has O negative blood. She got a kidney transplant in 2012 but within 48 hours it failed. They don’t know why. She’s doing fine now but I myself have had many issues (severe colitis and other skin issues) that I managed to fix with your advice and thought maybe you had something or knew of something she could do. I know you’re not able to prescribe or give advice but have you seen this before? Have you had experience with people in the same situation? I was hoping I could share it with her. I know it’ll take 12 or more weeks to hear back but that’s okay, I listen to every episode so I’ll be waiting to hear back, no rush! Thank you! She was also the first women to earn a medical degree in Uruguay, fought for women's rights, advocated for more comprehensive sexual education, and generally GOT SHIT DONE. Emily talks about the onna-bugeisha, fierce female Japanese warriors. She covers 3 prominent onna-bugeisha each just as badass as the last. We also give a shout out to artist Gabriel Diaz (@gabydiazortiz) who is writing and illustrating a book on Artemisia Gentileschi! The ladies are here with their cheapest wine yet; a FREE bottle of ForestVille Riesling (that they totally didn't let sit around for 4 years.) It pairs perfectly with a pair of royal ladies who probably would have been besties and started their own podcast had they not lived hundreds of years apart. First, Kelley shares the story of Hatshepsut, an Egyptian Pharaoh (NOT QUEEN) who politely usurped a child. Then, Emily shares the story of Razia, the first and only woman Sultan (NOT SULTANA) of Delhi and her journey from being overlooked to being a ruler! ** Mornings with u by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeenMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/winingaboutherstory/overview)
