Chasteberry is an herbal supplement that is used to support mood balance and hormone health in female and male horses. The Chastetree berry (Vitex agnus-castus) plant is a shrub that grows in the Mediterranean and parts of Asia. The fruits and leaves contain active ingredients that influence hormonal balance in horses. This herb is purported to support hypothalamus and pituitary function in horses with Cushing's disease/PPID. Anecdotally, chasteberry is said to help make moody mares easier to handle and may have a calming effect on aggressive stallions or geldings. Chasteberry is safe to use, with no reported side effects in horses. It is not recommended for pregnant mares because of potential effects on the reproductive system which have not been evaluated in pregnant animals.  This podcast reviews the benefits of chasteberry for horses and highlights its mechanism of action. Vitex, Clomid and Letrozole: A Review of Research

In this episode of Food, Freedom, and Fertility, Caitlin & Sophia take a different approach and independently choose two different topics in the world of fertility and PCOS along with their associated studies to dissect important topics in the world of women’s health so listeners can gather the data presented and understand the theories within their own frame of reference. The studies chosen by Caitlin and Sophia focus on Vitex, Letrozole, and Clomind.    Sophia started the conversation discussing a study involving Vitex, otherwise known as Chasteberry. Vitex is a supplement recommended for luteal phase to help with hyper prolactin anemia, which happens when your body’s body's makes too much prolactin. Most women notice this as a common reason for the luteal phase to be shorter than average with a menstrual cycle including heavy periods with intense pain and cramping. The study chosen aimed to prove whether or not Vitex could reduce elevated prolactin resulting in the luteal phase lengthening and progesterone levels normalizing.  As Sophia continues to dissect the study, both weigh in on their known benefits and drawbacks of Vitex through their own experiences and exposure to the herbal supplement.    Caitlin’s chosen study involved the debate on Letrozole versus Clomid. Clomid is a fertility drug which blocks your brain’s estrogen receptors and makes your body think its estrogen levels are low which results in the making of more follicle stimulating the FH hormone, the hormone responsible for triggering your body to grow follicles to size. Letrozole is a newer drug that also changes how your body makes estrogen but instead of using brain receptors, it triggers the enzyme responsible for turning testosterone into estrogen to stop. This causes your body to produce more estrogen in other ways to compensate for the lower levels in the body. Both are known to induce ovulating, which proves to be helpful for the population living with PCOS.  The Clomid study chosen focused on that group of women within the United States. In the study a somewhat shocking statistic rate is shared from Caitlin to make listeners aware of the drug’s success rate while also detailing the processes and side effects the body can withstand when taking Clomid.  The study related to Letrozole, identifies some advantages over Clomid while sounding similar processes within the body. Both studies show staggering statistics including strong differences of each drug, which Caitlin aims to share openly and critically with listeners who hold stake in the wellness of their fertility process.   When discussing these studies, Caitlin and Sophia aim to quantify the scientific descriptions into relatable context for listen to digest within their own world of fertility.  While focusing on discussion rather than hard persuasion, Caitlin and Sophia hope to give listeners helpful information so steps can be taken alongside a medical care professional in an effort to reach a healthy fertility process.

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started!    Cindy: I’m hoping to begin easing into a 24-hour fast/ one day reset diet once or twice a month. I’ve been doing the 12-hour overnight fasting for a couple weeks now and feeling calmer, but I’m hoping to add in extra autophagy benefit from an at least monthly 24 hour fast/one day reset. I’m a nursing mom so can’t do the quarterly detox yet. I’m wondering if Dr. Cabral has recommendations on the timing of the 24-hour fast as it relates to a woman’s fertility cycle? No artificial hormones here, and my cycles are pretty regular with a shorter luteal phase since I’m still returning to full fertility after my last pregnancy.I think I remember Dr. Cabral saying that progesterone is a precursor to cortisol, which I think I have chronically high levels of (working on it!). But I’ve also seen research showing that fasting can interrupt the hormones that tip off follicle stimulation preceding ovulation, so the estrogen-dominant part of the cycle might not be best either. I’ve ordered the OAT and HTMA and will complete those this week probably.Any help would be appreciated. Sonja: Hi Dr. Cabral,First of all I'd like to thank you for being a great teacher, for founding the IHP Institute, and sharing your knowledge! I have come very far health wise, I'm very grateful for my health, but I'm stuck with one issue, being fibrocystic breasts.I'll list the labs and protocols I've done, to give an overview what I've tried yet. I ran the big 5 labs in November 2018, completed CBO protocol, gut rebuilding protocol, and parasite protocol (right now doing the advanced parasite protocol). Have done 21 day detox, 2x 7 day detox and 14 day detox in 2019. Mostly dairy and gluten free (right now following the sensitive gut guide), have worked on stress reduction, and feeling great stress wise. Weaned off AED and progesterone cream, and my current supplement regimen is: CBD, DNS, DFVB, vitamin C, B- Complex, Omega 3, Magnesium, collagen, probiotics, vitamin D, astaxanthin, estrogen balance and adrenal energy. Will soon wean down the adrenal energy, since cortisol levels were nearly perfect, when I ran a TAH in August. Thyroid function was great, progesterone was perfect, however estrogen was high. I have used DIM, evening primrose oil, Chasteberry, and vitamin E for hormone balance before, over an extended period of time, but weaned the supplements down about 6-10 months ago. When I started the estrogen balance again, I was quite sure the FB would subside as well, but it got worse. Fibrocystic and painful, almost immediately after ovulation, and during the entire luteal phase. I wondered, if molecular iodine could be the answer to this issue. However discussing in IHP, I got the recommendation to rather try a systemic enzyme, serrapeptase or nattokinase. We saw there's also research on it, but didn't find much regarding dosage. Have you tried any of these for this specific issue, and would you have some insight regarding timespan and dosage? Or would your recommendation be entirely different? Thank you so much! Nikki: Hi my name is Nikki and I have a 2 year old daughter who we are looking to get her started on CBD oil. I noticed that your site was sold out, I was wondering if it would be coming back or if it is still the situation that Dr. Cabral can not sell it at this time. I was also wondering if you provide proper dosing for CBD oil in kids. I would be interested in setting up a consult with Dr. Cabral to see my two year old, if that is possible. She is a child who is diagnosed with syndrome, she has been on a ventilator for the last year. She also has gut motility issues, seizures (which are controlled with meds) and low tone. Any help I can get would be so much appreciated.Thank You in advance, Nikki Michael: Hi Dr. Cabral,Thank you for all that you do. I finally found my North Star with health once I discovered the rain barrel effect.I’m 30 years old. I’ve been on L2 foundational protocol for a while. I’ve never done any FM lab tests but definitely suspect gut issues as I’ve dealt with constipation/IBS my entire life and grew up on bagel bites and fruit roll ups.Question: on my bloodwork I had elevated bilirubin. Doctor calls it Gilbert’s syndrome. Sometimes the whites of my eyes can be a bit yellow. I don’t want to be like Gilbert. Please help.Second question: I have a mild case of tinnitus. I used to play in bands a lot when I was younger and probably damaged my hearing pretty badly. I feel like I always want to pop my ears. Every time I make the yawning gesture I can hear the popping in my ears. I feel like I’m experiencing some hearing loss as well. Almost feels like inflammation in my sinuses or ear canals.I’m going to either test with the OAT/HTMA or just jump right into the cbo protocol.Any advice is much appreciated! Judy: Do you offer or plan to offer a C-reactive protein (CRP) with coaching? My medical provider doesn’t offer it.   Thank you for tuning into this weekend’s Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes & Resources:  http://StephenCabral.com/1381 - - - Dr. Cabral's New Book, The Rain Barrel Effect https://amzn.to/2H0W7Ge - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: http://CabralSupportGroup.com - - -   Dr. Cabral’s Most Popular Supplements: > “The Dr. Cabral Daily Protocol” (This is what Dr. Cabral does every day!) - - - > Dr. Cabral Detox  (The fastest way to get well, lose weight, and feel great!) - - - > Daily Nutritional Support Shake  (#1 “All-in-One recommendation in my practice) - - - > Daily Fruit & Vegetables Blend  (22 organic fruit & vegetables “greens powder”) - - - > CBD Oil  (Full-spectrum, 3rd part-tested & organically grown) - - - > Candida/Bacterial Overgrowth, Leaky Gut, Parasite & Speciality Supplement Packages - - - > See All Supplements: https://equilibriumnutrition.com/collections/supplements  - - -   Dr. Cabral’s Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Organic Acids Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Thyroid + Adrenal + Hormone Test  (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Adrenal + Hormone Test (Run your adrenal & hormone levels) - - - > Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Omega-3 Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - > Stool Test (Use this test to uncover any bacterial, h. Sara Gottfried M.D. is a mother, wife, Harvard-educated physician, keynote speaker, and author of three New York Times bestselling books, The Hormone Cure (2012), The Hormone Reset Diet (2015), and her latest book Younger: A Breakthrough Program to Reset Your Genes, Reverse Aging, and Turn Back the Clock 10 Years (2017). For the past 25+ years, Dr. Sara has been dedicated to helping women feel at home in their bodies with functional medicine. After graduating from Harvard Medical School and MIT, she completed her residency at the University of California at San Francisco. She lives in Berkeley, California with her family.   Dr Sara, shares what she learned from her own journey towards health highlighting how jumping straight to bioidentical hormone therapy isn't always the best option.    Dr Sara lays out the issues of hormones in perimenopausal and the implications in Alzheimer's disease. The dramatic hormone shifts in perimenopause into the menopausal transition make women more vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease.   We discuss the concepts of bioenergetics, glucose "hypometabolism" and mitochondrial changes in pre, peri, and postmenopausal changes. The premenopausal state is protective against brain changes leading to Alzheimer's.    The HPA axis, or the control system for stress and hormone system, becomes dysregulated. Dr Sara describes how symptoms such as anxiety and depression may in fact may not be the diseases themselves, but harbingers of Alzheimer's and cognitive impairment.    Dr Sara's Basics for Estrogen and Hormone Balance: Food choices: basics of water, increased fiber, magnesium Assessing nutrient gaps (organic acid panels, essential fatty acid, oxidative stress panel) Assessment of microbiome (looking for infection, dysbiosis, beta-glucuronidase, etc) with Functional stool testing. Looking at Estrogen metabolism (estrone, estradiol, estrone) this can be done with dried urine testing and other testing to determine how your body is breaking down estrogen and if it is getting rid of it efficiently stool testing with beta-glucuronidase An approach to identifying and actively managing stress and to develop stress resilience Using a the Perceived Stress Scale to assess Measure blood cortisol, dried urine testing Core supplementation: magnesium, DIM (di-indolylmethane). Advanced maneuvers (of course, in the context of overall lifestyle changes) Phosphatidylserine 300-400mg - in divided doses or all at once or at bedtime Lavela (pill form of Lavender) for anxiousness - can get on Amazon Chasteberry - helps perimenopausal women who still get a menstrual cycle. Helps raise progesterone (a neurosteroid that helps to soothe the female brain). note: this can take 2-4 weeks to see a change Dr Sara often recommends: "Fertility Blend" brand name   When does Dr Sara move to using bioidentical hormone replacement? after basic lifestyle changes:  Step 1: Navigate stress (less coffee and alcohol). add flax seeds to a morning shake/smoothie (eg 2 tablespoons) Step 2: Chasteberry, Siberian rhubarb, Maca (see Dr Sara's books esp The Hormone Cure for doses and timing and alot more strategy) Step 3: Consider bioidentical hormones estradiol patch with micronized progesterone esp for perimenopausal women. she tries to use the lowest dose for the shortest time possible. she see's about 10% of her patients end up going on hormone replacement.    Towards the end of the interview (minute 50) we take a fairly deep dive into using bioidentical hormone therapy in women that are a bit older than perimenopausal ages and the controversy surrounding this issue.    Dr Sara also lets the cat out of the bag with a new book on Brain that's coming out soon! listen towards the end of the interview for that. In the next few minutes, I want to share with you white hot secrets about two natural plants that you can use to alleviate menstrual, peri-menopausal and menopausal issues gently, safely and effectively. Not once in the last 20 years have they failed to do their job. Both plants have been used to help women for centuries and their therapeutic actions have been scientifically validated. Motherwort The first, and one of the most remarkable natural healing plants on the planet is Motherwort—Leonurus cardiaca—commonly known as Lion’s tail. It gets its name from its ancient reputation for reducing anxiety. Motherwort has all the feel of a loving, caring mother when you take it. It can calm your nervous system while acting as a tonic to your whole body. This lovely blessing from nature is full of mind-altering natural biochemicals which studies in China have shown to have a regulating effect on the womb and the heart, bringing calm all round. It’s effective for easing hot flushes, banishing insomnia, and restoring elasticity to the walls of the vagina. It’s also an excellent natural treatment for many heart conditions in both men and women. Let me tell you how it’s used: Motherwort is rich in alkaloids and is bitter when drunk as an infusion. It’s easiest to take as a store-bought tincture, but you can also grow the plant yourself and turn it into a homemade herbal vinegar. Take 10 to 25 drops of the tincture made from the fresh plant every 2 to 6 hours, or 1 to 2 teaspoons of the herb vinegar as you need it. How To Use There is something so calming and balancing about motherwort that it is hard to imagine if you’ve never used it. It’s a blessing during any stressful time. For best results with hot flushes, use it regularly for 12 weeks or more. That being said, just 10 drops of the tincture in a little spring water will often ease a hot flush while it is happening. Motherwort is also a great help when you awaken in the night in sweat and have trouble dropping off again. Use 10 to 20 drops of the tincture (keep it at the side of your bed with a glass of spring water) and swallow some each time you wake up. Sometimes, it even helps banish bad dreams. Want to know more? Motherwort improves circulation and strengthens tissues that have lost elasticity. You can use it to rejuvenate the tissues of bladder, womb and vagina, for instance, when you take it a couple of times a day for as little as 2 to 4 weeks. Finally, it’s great for clearing cramps when the menstrual flow is light to moderate or even completely absent. Use 5 to 10 drops of tincture or ½ to 1 teaspoon of the homemade vinegar every few minutes until the cramps have gone. Then repeat whenever you need to. There’s one important caution you need to be aware of, however. Motherwort is not an herb to use when a woman is experiencing menstrual flooding, since it can aggravate this tendency. Chaste Tree The other amazing natural plant I love is Chaste Tree. Its proper name is Vitex agnus castus or Monk’s Pepper. Chaste Tree originally gained its name from its ability to calm the lascivious desires of men. On women, however, it exerts the exact opposite effect. It can stimulate your libido while balancing your emotions and energizing your whole body. Chaste Tree is one of the most helpful plants in the world for peri-menopausal, menopausal and postmenopausal women. It does the job, whether your hormones are deficient or in excess, thanks to its actions on the pituitary that harmonizes any imbalances. Chaste Tree is better known in Europe and the Orient than in Britain and the United States. There, its berries have been used for centuries to help protect from and even cure cancers of the breast and womb, as well as to reduce breast lumps and tenderness. It can banish edema, clear skin problems, moisten vaginal tissues that have dried, and clear hot flushes. Unlike many healing plants, Chaste Tree is not rich in phyto-hormones. It relies for healing on the glycosides, micronutrients and flavonoids it contains to work its wonders. This humble plant goes deep in its effects on your body and psyche but, like most natural treatments, will take time, so be consistent with its use. Expect results after using it daily for 8 to 12 weeks. In a year to 18 months you can stop using it completely as improvements are likely to have become permanent. Here’s how Here’s how to use it. As a homemade infusion, drink one cup of tea made from its freshly ground berries a day. In capsule form, take 1 capsule 3 to 4 times a day. Or use 15 drops to 1 teaspoon of a tincture 1 to 3 times a day. German researchers discovered that Chasteberry stimulates progesterone synthesis, and this in turn balances excess estrogen which can trigger hot flushes. Chaste Tree’s anti-inflammatory capacities have been known to shrink fibroids when used regularly for 12 to 36 months. Sluggish digestion and constipation are no match for the Chasteberry, which can restore digestion easily and permanently, provided you take it for long enough. It can even clear skin troubles that develop as a result of hormonal change, and banish fluid retention. To top it all off, this amazing plant is known for its ability to clear depression and balance mood: Typical PMS problems, from migraines and depression to ordinary headaches and anxiety, yield slowly but often permanently to Chaste Tree. This usually takes about 6 months, but it is wise to continue with the plant for another 6 months afterward to make benefits permanent. Make sure you choose only the best products. There are too many poor wannabes on the shelves. Here are the ones I recommend. Use them. I think you’ll love them as much as I do. Here are the ones I recommend Eclectic Institute, Motherwort Organic, 2 fl oz Gaia Herbs, Vitex Berry, 60 Veggie Liquid Phyto-Caps
