Earlier this month I joined nearly 9,000 other people who are passionate about parks and recreation in Dallas at the 2023 NRPA Annual Conference. It was a week full of inspiration, networking and fun — and for me, a chance to celebrate not only all the good work happening in local parks and recreation, but also see the culmination of my NRPA colleagues' hard work in putting on what was a truly incredible event. One of my biggest highlights of the week was connecting with Chris Bass, CPRP, Director of Parks and Recreation for Douglasville, Georgia, and the incoming Board President of the National Recreation and Park Ethnic Minority Society (NRPEMS), and Thamara Velasco, CYSA, a recreation assistant in Douglasville, chair for public relations for NRPEMS and recipient of NRPA's Young Professional Fellowship. I really enjoyed our conversation about all the good work going on in Douglasville — who was a National Gold Medal Award Finalist this year — as well as the important work Chris and Thamara are doing to connect and support diverse and underrepresented park and recreation professionals as part of the NRPEMS. This was truly one of my favorite parts of this year's conference, and it was such a joy to sit down with Chris and Thamara to learn more about them and soak in some of the passion they have for parks and recreation – I was inspired after this conversation, and I hope you are too. Tune in to our full conversation below. You'll learn: How NRPEMS is building community for park and recreation professionals of diverse cultures and backgrounds Why it's important to have a network focused on diverse professionals in our industry How NRPEMS has been beneficial for Chris and Thamara in their careers What being part of NRPEMS and being park and recreation professionals serving their community means to Chris and Thamara How to get involved with the NRPEMS, and much more! Sun Ra - the Alpha and Omega of Space Music! Greetings …I'm Chris Bass a music producer and renowned Spaceologist and in episode two we examine the music of Sun Ra, bandleader, keyboardist, arranger, philosopher, artist and educator.Hailing from the planet of Saturn, Sun-Ra aka Herman Poole ‘Sunny' Blount, took keyboard playing into new dimensions and changed music forever. The players in his Arkestra (his big band for over forty years) followed Sun's lead creating forms of Cosmic Jazz that inspired almost every other creator of Space Music that came afterwards. The Arkestra's saxophonists John Gilmore and Marshall Allen pushed the sonic boundaries of what was possible with a wind instrument. In fact Gilmore was cited by John Coltrane as his biggest influence…and most folks would agree that Coltrane totally reinvented the modern day concept of the instrument solo.In this episode we look atRa's beginningsThe ways that the Arkestra evoked Outer Space via acoustic means.Sun Ra's Electronic Keyboard CosmosSun's move into the land of the synthesiserThe Arkestra's cosmic playing techniquesCosmic Sound Effects - how Sun travelled further into the galaxy via the studio.A break down of how I applied these techniques to create Cosmic Jazz…and the episode finishes with my first release for Sounds of Space the Sun Ra Cosmic Jazz tribute…They Fell From the Skies.Whether you're a music lover, space-fanatic, musician or producer or just need a new creative perspective blast off with me on a fantastic journey as we explore the musical universe of artists who sonically evoke Outer Space and Sci-Fi Futurism in popular music with SOUND.Episode LinksThey Fell from the Skies available at https://soundsofspace.bandcamp.com/track/they-fell-from-the-skiesAnother Ra tribute - Ra Transmigration - https://soundsofspace.bandcamp.com/track/ra-transmigration-ft-scramblaSpace is the Place by John Szwed - one of the most definitive books on Sun-Ra and the best source of ‘behind-the-scenes' information - https://www.amazon.com/Space-Place-Lives-Times-Sun/dp/0306808552The Temple - A fantastic online Discography of the works of Sun Ra - http://www.the-temple.net/sunradisco/list.phpSun Ra Music - Bandcamp - The Official digital music site of Sun Ra - https://sunramusic.bandcamp.com/Sun-Ra - Spotify - If you insist on streaming…well…here it is - https://open.spotify.com/artist/0tIODqvzGUoEaK26rK4pvXA wonderful 53 minute NPR Jazz Profile of Sun-Ra - https://www.npr.org/2007/10/31/15774733/sun-ra-cosmic-swing

Techno Rebels: 30 Years of Juice Records with Damien Donato.Hailed the world over and given kudos from such luminaries as Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin and Mike Banks of Underground Resistance, Juice Records has continually pushed the sonic boundaries of techno.…and they've given me a WORLDWIDE exclusive on a new track called ‘Inifinty'Greetings Earth people. I'm Chris Bass a music producer and renowned Spaceologist and in this special episode I talk with Techno Artist and Label Chief, DMZ aka Damien Donato.Whilst Juice Records is renowned for launching the career of international DJ superstar HMC (who later became the Late Nite Tuff Guy),its catalog runs deep and they are still actively releasing new music.Launched as an underground techno label in the early 90's, Juice typified the lofty ambitions of the techno generation in both sound and deed, using the vinyl record as its medium. This is the story of a Techno Rebel who put the sound of his city - the city of Adelaide - on the world stage and in doing so, brought tangible credibility to Australian Techno music.Damien runs downEarly days of the Techno scene in AdelaideThe influence of the music from the U.S., U.K and EuropeHis dealings with Richie Hawtin and Jeff Mills and his love of Detroit techno and Underground Resistance.Building a team with Thee, Paddee, HMC and DCEBalancing label business with creative workFax machines, DATs and Studio GearA blow by blow of the entire Juice vinyl record catalogWhether you're a music lover, space-fanatic, musician or producer or just need a new creative perspective blast off with me on a fantastic journey as we explore the musical universe of artists who sonically evoke Outer Space and Sci-Fi Futurism in popular music with SOUND.Special Thanks to:The entire Juice artist team: Damez, Thee, Paddee, HMC, John Gray and Antony Coppens - for the great music.Liz Copeland, Clark Warner of 101.9 Detroit Public Radio, for the Mike Banks clips.Dave Barnett for sound bites of Mike Banks and Richie Hawtin - check out Frequency Response TV - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtgWKhSA0iCsC3gQT3hyhqgStilgherrian - https://stilgherrian.com/Georgie Knight of Dreaming Daisies - check out a 1992 show upload by code618 - https://soundcloud.com/code618/dreaming-daisies-may-1992Damien DonatoExtra special thanks to Damien and Antony for the exclusive track.Underground Resistance: http://undergroundresistance.com/JUICE020 - Antony Coppens 2021 release: https://juicerecords-australia.bandcamp.com/album/antony-coppens“ It goes beyond the drum machine and synthesiser sounds the label would be known for and embraces a wider spectrum with use of a Yamaha baby grand, Fender Rhodes, Washburn bass and Yamaha Electone E-75. Becky Talks Parks: Parks & Recreation Podcast for Passionate Professionals
From developing program ideas, evaluating success, and managing teams, there’s so much to know when it comes to recreation programming. It’s one of the most rewarding elements of a parks and recreation career – to develop programs that make a difference in the community. Sometimes it can help to hear the perspectives of other programmers who are rocking it so you can learn from them. You can learn how others overcome obstacles similar to yours. Have you ever experienced: a limited budget? low participation? part-time/seasonal staff? A lack of resources? Most professionals have! In this episode, we talk with Chris Bass about what it’s like to be a park manager who faces many of these challenges. We dive into how to develop programs based on community input, how to evaluate programs, and some creative programming ideas (which are a win-win for your department and your community!). Head over to iTunes or your favorite podcast player and have a listen. I’d so appreciate it if you’d leave a review if you enjoy the show. Thanks! Carthage, Nauvoo, and Warsaw, Illinois form a bit of an anti-Mormon Triangle. Most Mormons know about the first 2 cities, but what do you know about the third? In our next conversation, we'll get acquainted with both Brian Stutzman and Warsaw, Illinois, once a hotbed of anti-Mormon sentiment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkRwGiO2RFU Brian: Before the Saints came to Nauvoo and before Warsaw was even started, there were some tracts of land on both sides of Mississippi. It doesn't sound politically correct, but on the Iowa side, (Iowa was a territory,) the government set up what was called the Half-breed Tract. Basically, it was for people that would be given land if they had one parent that was Native American, and another one that was a white person. That's why it was called Half-breed Tract. Well, the government gave this land away. And these Indians, half-Indians, half-breeds, whatever the term was in that time period, they didn't want it. So land speculators, like I said, Isaac Galland came, and would give them pennies on the dollar. He and his land development company had thousands of acres over on the Iowa side by Montrose, which became later the Zarahemla Stake. Well on the other side of the river by Commerce and Hotchkiss which became Nauvoo... GT: Yeah, Commerce became Nauvoo. Brian: So the United States government had 3.5 million acres. They had three different tracts. They called them military tracts, or bounty tracts, and basically, after the War of 1812, the United States government owed soldiers back pay. They didn't have any money, but they had all this land on the western frontier. That's what this military tract was. Essentially, if you were a soldier in the War of 1812, you would get 160 acres in one of these three military tracts. One of them came through western Illinois. It covered 12 counties. Like I said, it's 3.5 million acres, so it's sizable. Well, the soldiers up in New England didn't want to move. Some of them didn't want to move, at least to Western Illinois, so they would sell their land for pennies on the dollar. So Isaac Galland and other land speculators had land on both sides of the Mississippi and they heard about Joseph Smith being in Liberty Jail, and he wrote him and said, "If you're looking for a place for your people, I'll make you a deal--nothing down...." That's one reason I think the saints moved to Quincy and then on up as soon as Joseph escaped from Liberty to go up to Nauvoo. Brian is the first person to write a history of Warsaw, and we'll learn more about the dynamics that led to people of that city to storm the Carthage Jail and kill Joseph Smith, Jr. Brian also had an interesting experience! Brian: I later became really good friends with the mayor, Tiffany Murphy and her husband Chris Bass. They had me over for dinner multiple times, took me out on the river. It was really cool. My experience with Warsaw not only on my multiple trips back because I was doing research for this book, but an apex of it was spending two nights in the bedroom of Thomas Sharp. GT: There you go. GT: Oh wow. Brian: Now my wife says, “Is kind of like staying in the bedroom of Hitler or something? Was it dark? Was it positive?” Thomas Sharp was editor of the newspaper and leader of the mob that stormed the jail in Carthage. We'll talk about him quite a bit over the next few weeks. We'll also talk about the events that led to a big rivalry between Nauvoo and Warsaw. Check out our conversation…. Carthage, Nauvoo, and Warsaw formed an anti-Mormon triangle that led to the prophet Joseph Smith's death. Brian Stutzman has written the first history of Warsaw, Illinois. Dr. Alex Gee continues his discussion of fatherhood by talking with two experts and scholars in family life, Dr. Chris Bass and Dr. Gerry White. Their conversation explores the way the media and society conveys Black identity through generations, the importance of reconciling with father's, and mentoring children. Dr. Bass and Dr. White focus on the health of father's as they raise and set the example for their children. Broken father's will produce broken children if a healthy identity is not developed early.
