He claims Georgia families are spending significantly more due to inflation, which he attributes to Harris's influence. Despite recent reports indicating stabilization in inflation rates, Trump argues that the current administration's policies have exacerbated economic challenges. Tourism Generates $2.4B Economic Impact in Cobb, Bureau Says In 2022, tourism in Cobb County generated a $2.4 billion economic impact, marking a 9% increase from the previous year, according to Cobb Travel and Tourism. Of this total, $1.5 billion was a direct impact from visitors, while an additional $900 million came from indirect and induced impacts. The largest economic contributions were from food and beverage, followed by lodging and transportation. Tourism also supported over 18,000 jobs in the county, with the majority directly related to visitor activity. The organization celebrated these achievements at its annual "Meeting and Mixer" event, recognizing various partners and announcing plans to move to a new office space in spring 2024. Award winners included The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, A5 Volleyball's Beast of the Southeast, City of Smyrna's Food Truck Tuesdays, Omni Hotel at The Battery Atlanta, Silla Del Toro, and James “Jim” L. BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb Commission Gives County Manager 3-Year Contract Extension The Cobb Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to extend County Manager Jackie McMorris's contract for three  years, from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026. Her new base salary will be $350,000, an increase from her previous  $291,700. McMorris has held the role of county manager since April 2020, succeeding Rob Hosack. Before that, she had a  background in academics and had worked in government roles, including serving as the head of Cherokee County's  community relations department and chief of staff for former Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard. The vote for  her contract extension took place with no discussion among the commissioners......…….Get more stories like this from  mdjonline.com STORY 2: Marietta Welcomes Back First Black Homecoming Queen as Part of Festivities Marietta High School is celebrating homecoming with a special guest, Brenda Russaw McCrae, the school's first Black  homecoming queen from 50 years ago. McCrae, a 1973 graduate, has returned for the festivities. She integrated the  previously all-white school in 1964 and was the first Black cheerleader. The celebration includes a homecoming kickoff at  Glover Park Brewery, a fan fest at Northcutt Stadium, and a parade along a revised route. Additionally, the event will honor  Marietta High junior Liv Teverino, who tragically lost her life in a car crash last month. Brenda McCrae's visit is a reminder  of the school's history and the progress it has made. STORY 3: Powder Springs Man Stole 4,000 pounds of Copper from Acworth Business Frank Donald McConnell, a temporary employee, is accused of stealing around 4,000 lbs. of copper tubing and pipe  from Hayes Pipe Supply in Acworth. He was apprehended on August 4th after an employee found him inside the  business after work hours. McConnell had worked there from March 30 to August 4, with a schedule of Monday to  Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The company's operations manager discovered approximately 3,900 pounds of  copper missing, valued at $32,400. McConnell allegedly made four sales of the stolen copper to Alsobrooks Recycling  in Hiram. We'll be back in a moment Break: DAYCO – DRAKE – POWERS STORY 6: Cobb Fire Saves Horse Trapped in Creek This week, Cobb County firefighters collaborated with a local nonprofit, the Large Animal Response Group, to rescue a  mare named Raven trapped in a creek near Stout Park in southwest Cobb. Raven's owners sought help when they couldn't  free her themselves. The mare was sedated, and with the joint efforts of firefighters and the rescue group, they managed  to pull her 20 feet across the creek and up a three-foot embankment. After about 20 minutes of recovery, Raven was up  and walking again. The Large Animal Response Group, formed seven years ago, focuses on rescuing horses but is also  equipped to help with cattle and llamas. They provide training for firefighters and volunteers and raise funds for  specialized equipment. Raven was successfully rescued and is now in good health. STORY 7: Whats happening on Friday In Cobb County tonight, you have three exciting options. Firstly, The Strand Theatre in Marietta is screening the classic  horror film "Friday the 13th" with a pre-show on the Mighty Allen Theatre Organ. It's rated R, and those under 17 need a  parent or guardian. Next, Marietta's New Theatre in the Square, in collaboration with the New African Grove Theatre,  presents August Wilson's "Two Trains Running" on October 13-15 and 20-22, exploring life in the 1960s Hill District of  Pittsburgh, touching on themes of urban redevelopment and racial inequality. Heading into the 2023 traditional state wrestling championships at the Macon Coliseum, Cobb County had three wrestlers who were trying to win back-to-back titles. As of this past weekend, Hillgrove's Zion Rutledge, Kennesaw Mountain's Genevieve An and Lassiter's May Prado can now call themselves two-time state champions. After a bye in the first round, Rutledge, wrestling at 215 pounds, pinned Mountain View's Lex Hennebaul in the first period, beat North Cobb's with an 11-4 decision in the semifinals and then pinned South Forsyth's Cole Williams in the third period of the championship match to claim the title. Rutledge dominated the championship match, as he was up 11-3 in points when the fall occurred. An had been upset in the girls sectional tournament and finished third, and that may have provided enough incentive to take it to another level at state. In four matches in the 170-pound division she recorded four pins, which included two in the first period -- her opening match and then again in the final.  In the championship match, Mia Bernacki of Effingham County lasted only 1:31 into the match before An overpowered her to defend her championship. Prado followed a similar path. After a bye in the first round, she defended her title by recording three straight pins. Only the championship match made it past the first round. Prado was up 11-2 when she finished off Monroe Area's Te'yarah Lett in the second period, 3:47 into the match. Comedian, actor and producer Joe Gatto is bringing shenanigans and antics to the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on Thursday for his "Night of Comedy" tour. The former "Impractical Jokers" star, best known for his decade-long career in making America laugh, is on the road for his 40-city solo tour. From childhood stories as a Staten Island native to the realities of fatherhood, Gatto said attendees will hear it all. In December 2021, Gatto announced on social media that he was leaving "Impractical Jokers" for personal reasons.  Those who haven't seen truTV's hit TV show "Impractical Jokers", Gatto and his three childhood best friends Brian "Q" Quinn, James "Murr" Murray and Sal Vulcano challenge each other to perform outlandish dares in public. Since 2011, the hidden camera prank show chronicled the comedy troupe's overt interactions with strangers. Aside from Gatto's comedy tour, he also co-hosts the "Two Cool Moms" podcast with stand-up comedian Steve Byrne. The Atlanta Braves announced Friday the Gwinnett Stripers' coaching staff for the 2023 season, and joining the club will be former Pope standout Stevie Wilkerson. The 31-year-old Wilkerson, a Roswell native,  enters his first season with both Gwinnett and the Braves organization as he makes his professional coaching debut. Selected by Baltimore in the eighth round of the 2014 draft out of Clemson University, he played seven seasons in the Orioles organization from 2014-21, including 166 Major League games from 2018-21. Last season Stevie played for the Guadalajara Mariachis of the Mexican League, while also doing a brief stint with the Chicago Dogs of the American Association of Pro Baseball while on loan. With just over a month until the Mableton cityhood elections, south Cobb residents at a town hall Thursday night continued to complain they have more questions than answers about the fledgling city. The county-hosted event was the second town hall on cityhood in the last month, drawing a smaller, less rowdy crowd than a January meeting hosted by state Rep. David Wilkerson, D-Powder Springs. That was perhaps due to the billing of the event, pitched as a general question and answer session on Mableton rather than a rallying cry for the de-annexation movement. Still, de-annexation from the city continued to be a theme, with some residents calling for an outright do-over of the November referendum in which cityhood passed with 53% of the vote. Lisa Cupid, chairwoman of the Cobb Board of Commissioners, and Commissioner Monique Sheffield, who co-hosted the event, suggested they shared in the disgruntlement with the process. Thursday's event came the day after the county announced Governor Brian Kemp will not appoint a transition committee to lead talks with the county before the council is seated. Asked why Kemp made that decision, Cupid shrugged and said that's for him to answer. County Manager Jackie McMorris told the MDJ that without a transition committee, the county at present has no point of contact for the new city. The composition of the Cobb Board of Health  heard from Rachel Franklin, CDPH director of epidemiology on Thursday, about the state of various diseases in the county, including a concerning rise in congenital syphilis. Rachel Franklin told the board bad news about congenital syphilis and tuberculosis, but good news when it comes to flu, mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) and COVID-19. Congenital syphilis occurs when a pregnant person passes on her infection to their baby. Syphilis is curable with antibiotics. But if not detected, it can cause lasting damage. When passed from mothers to infants, it can cause babies to have a low birth weight, or result in stillbirth. Prior to 2021, there were a “couple dozen” cases statewide. In 2021, 93 babies were born with syphilis, Franklin said. About a dozen of those were in Cobb and Douglas counties, resulting in two stillbirths. The infections are especially affecting Hispanic and African-American populations, mostly due to a lack of pre-natal care. The Board of Commissioners recently allocated $3.67 million to a CDPH program, partnering with Wellstar, to provide prenatal care to uninsured women. The syphilis issue is part of a larger trend in increasing transmission of sexually transmitted infections, per Franklin. Areas in Cobb with higher HIV rates also see higher syphilis rates. Franklin added that her staff was alarmed to see, for the first time in more than 15 years, cases of young teen girls with primary and secondary syphilis. The board discussed working with community groups to spread awareness of the issue, and provide recommendations on preventing infection. Franklin said that tuberculosis is “not slowing down either.” CDPH has seen five cases this year. In 2022, there were 18 cases in Cobb. CDPH is working on identifying resources to help people who are infected. At least four red-tailed hawks, two red-bellied woodpeckers, and one difficult-to-spot brown creeper visited Smith-Gilbert Gardens on Saturday, where birding enthusiasts were ready with binoculars to spot them during the annual Great Backyard Bird Count. The international event is organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society and Birds Canada during which anyone can submit data from their own bird watching. The data is used, according to the event's website, to “help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations.” The bird count is held over four days every February. This year, the count began Friday and continued through Yesterday. Smith-Gilbert Gardens, off Pine Mountain Road in Kennesaw, joined the international citizen science event Friday and Saturday by providing guided tours and bird identification tools to visitors. Thanks to a foster parent's social media efforts, Buford-based Jambos Donates is more than doubling its pajama output in the final month of 2022. Now in its fifth year of operation, Jambos provides new pajamas for foster children in Georgia and throughout the country. In 2022, the nonprofit founded by Rebekah Black will have served children in all 50 states and in 13 countries, sending out some 22,000 pairs of children's sleepwear. This summer, Jambos sent some pajamas to a foster parent — Black thinks she lives in Illinois — who happens to have more than 1 million followers on TikTok. To say the nonprofit was subsequently inundated by requests would be a bit of an understatement. While Black relates she's got a lot of volunteers to help out, Jambos is also in need of some operating capital and — surprise! — pajamas. Jambos is seeking to collect 11,000 pajamas for kids of all ages and sizes. The organization is also in need of donations to fund the shipment of all those jammies at an estimated cost of $30,000 to $32,000. Black said Jambos' original December plan was to ship about 6,000 pairs of pajamas, but now she's looking at amassing and sending out close to double that amount. When the rush of the holiday season passes, January will bring yet another rash of requests. When asked what she envisioned 2023 to look like for Jambos, Black said, “We are going to continue to serve the kids all over the country and we'll take on new territories internationally because we do that every year. Aurora Theatre Co-Founder Anthony Rodriguez returns to star in the one-man show for a 16th year. Rodriguez's performance has become a holiday staple, as his storytelling is enhanced with the latest technology. The show, which is directed by Katie Erin Chambers, is 70 minutes of nonstop fun without an intermission and is suitable for all audiences. The show has an 8 p.m. start time on December 17 and 21-23, with 2:30 p.m. starts on December 17, 18 and 23. “A Christmas Carol” marks a return to the stage for Rodriguez, who stepped away from leading the Aurora Theatre's daily operations earlier this year after he was named the first executive director for the HUB404 Conservancy. Rodriguez, the Aurora theatre's co-founder and former president opened the Lawrenceville venue in 1996 and grew it from one employee and a $50,000 annual budget to a thriving, successful company with nearly 30 employees and a $4.2 million annual budget. He also serves on the boards for the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce and Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and assists the Atlanta Regional Commission and National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures. HUB404 aims to transform a multi-purpose nine-acre public greenspace that's currently above Georgia 400 state highway and MARTA's Buckhead rail station at the northern gateway to the City of Atlanta and will extend from Peachtree Road to Lenox Road. The Lawrenceville Arts Center also is hosting its “Festival of Trees” through December 22. Jackson Electric Membership Corporation is accepting applications for the annual Washington Youth Tour, sponsored by the nation's electric cooperatives. Jackson EMC will send four student delegates on an all-expense paid leadership development experience to Washington, D.C., June 15-22, 2023. Six Gwinnett High Schools will be competing in the 15th Annual Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards this school year. Collins Hill, Grayson, Greater Atlanta Christian, Lanier, Mountain View and Providence Christian Academy will all be vying for awards and scholarships in the state's biggest theatrical and musical competition. The Shuler Awards or The Shulers — named for the Marietta-born stage and screen star Shuler Hensley — will be held and broadcast live from the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on April 20, where the winners of the competition's 18 categories will be announced. Fulton County had a state-high 10 schools register to participate in the competition, followed by Gwinnett with six and Cobb and Forsyth counties each with four, as 22 counties have at least one school competing in the event. ArtsBridge Foundation Executive Director Jennifer Dobbs cited several changes made last year that positively impacted the 2022-23 Shuler Awards competition and ArtsBridge Foundation's commitment to its mission, vision, and Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access initiative. The competition will send 70 volunteer adjudicators to attend live performances throughout the state to determine who was best on stage. The categories include direction, music direction, orchestra, lighting, scenic design, choreography, ensemble, costumes, overall production, Shuler Showstopper and best performances by a leading actress and actor, supporting performers and a featured performer. The recipients of the Shuler Awards' leading actress and actor will be sent to New York City as Georgia's entrants for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards program named The Jimmy Awards. Kennesaw's downtown thronged with thousands Saturday afternoon as the city kicked off the holiday season with a parade down Main Street. The procession featured marching bands, twirlers, and floats from local bands, along with Santa Claus himself perched on the bed of a pickup truck. The parade also featured businesses, such as Whataburger, and the local Scout troops. Fred McGriff is finally a Hall of Famer. McGriff was voted in Sunday by the Contemporary Era committee, which was formed by the Hall to consider players who starred since 1980 and were not elected in the annual voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. McGriff, 59, hit 493 home runs during a 19-year controversy-free career that included 13 seasons of 27 or more homers, seven straight top-10 league MVP finishes and a World Series championship with the Atlanta Braves. He had two stints with his hometown Tampa Bay Rays, as well as time with the Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers. McGriff was elected unanimously by the 16-member committee. He was the only player elected from an eight-man ballot that also included Albert Belle, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy, Rafael Palmeiro and Curt Schilling. During 10 years on the Baseball Writers' Association of America ballot, McGriff never came close to the 75% threshold needed for election, surpassing 24 percent only in 2019, his final year of eligibility, when he got to 39.8. That lack of support was a source of considerable frustration for his supporters, who felt he was being overlooked and even penalized in comparison to players who were connected to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. McGriff chose to not say much, often just saying that he was happy to be considered.   By the time early voting ended Friday, nearly one in every three Cobb County voters had already cast a ballot in the runoff election between U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, and Republican challenger Herschel Walker. More than 155,510 Cobb voters, or 30.4%, have voted early in person or by absentee ballot, according to data from the Secretary of State's office. That turnout rate surpasses the state at-large, where 1,852,593 voters, or 26.4%, have cast a ballot. Early voting totals in Cobb weren't as high as before the November 8 general election, but voters had far less time to cast a ballot — one week before the runoff, as opposed to three weeks before the general election. That resulted in single-day totals that blew past the previous election. Last Monday, for example, saw over 27,000 voters cast a ballot in person, resulting in long lines at some Cobb polling locations. On Friday, the county said 29,699 people voted early. By way of comparison, the largest single-day total in the general election, which saw short wait times, was around 14,600. In Cobb, the huge early voting turnout was overshadowed Friday by a legal dispute over absentee ballots. The American Civil Liberties Union and Southern Poverty Law Center sued the county, alleging that delays in ballot mailing caused by the Thanksgiving holiday had disenfranchised voters. After hours of negotiation, Superior Court Judge Kellie Hill signed off on an agreement to extend the absentee ballot deadline by three days — to December 9 — for any voter whose absentee ballot application was accepted on or before Nov. 26. Ballots in that category must be postmarked by Tuesday, December 6, which is Election Day.   Three players scored in double figures, and Kell used an opportunistic defense to keep McEachern at bay and win their matchup 67-62 in the Tournament of Champions Showcase at Wheeler High School on Saturday.  The Longhorns, the Number 1 team in Class AAAAA, trailed only twice the entire game -- at 8-6 in the first quarter, and then 40-39 in the third -- and found a way to win despite missing 7-foot center Peyton Marshall. Coach Jermaine Sellers said Marshall could have played if it was a playoff game, but the team did not want to take the chance this early in the season. To offset his absence, Kell played the entire game with a added sense of urgency, grabbing nearly every loose ball, getting hands in passing lanes and creating steals. Each time McEachern, which was playing without starting guard Moses Hipps, seemed to get back into the game, Kell would force a turnover to two and push its lead back to four or five points, which it was the majority of the second half. The Longhorns needed to do all those things to help offset the performance of the Indians' Ace Bailey. The 6-foot-9 junior forward, a day after scoring 34 points against South Cobb, he kept McEachern, ranked third in Class AAAAAAA, in the game with a 30-point performance. The Cobb Galleria and Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre released its annual report this week, and business for both is back in full swing. For the first time since 2019, both venues were financially in the black. That was made possible due to the full return of live entertainment and events at two of Cobb's largest and busiest destinations. The Galleria hosted 187 events, up from less than 100 events in its previous fiscal year. Approximately 229,000 people visited the venue. CEPAC, meanwhile, held 178 events and brought in 180,000 guests after hosting next to no events during the depths of the pandemic. The Galleria posted an operating profit of just shy of $2 million, while the Galleria hit $3.53 million, the latter topping its 2019 numbers by roughly $750,000. The authority also boasted its best sales tax proceeds since before the pandemic. After generating about $1.7 million last year, the authority reported its venues generated $7.5 million in revenue from sales, liquor, hotel-motel and other taxes. Wheeler opened the second half on a 10-2 run to build a double-digit lead and gradually pulled away from a pesky Kimball High School from Texas squad 77-61 in the final game of the Tournament of Champions Showcase at Wheeler High School on Saturday. Kimball kept the game close throughout the first half and trailed only 30-28 at the break, so coach Larry Thompson said it was important to get off to a good start in the third quarter. The main big guy in the middle was 6-foot-9 forward Arrinten Page. The USC signee took full advantage, finishing the night with a team-high 21 points, including six dunks, along with 12 rebounds. Leading 41-34 a 3-pointer and a dunk by Jelani Hamilton, who finished with 12 points, pushed the Wildcats' lead to 46-34. Back-to-back dunks by Page late in the quarter gave Wheeler, the Number 1 team in Class AAAAAAA, a 50-40 advantage before five straight points by T'Johnn Brown, who led all scorers with 24 points, cut the lead to five to start the fourth quarter.  Isaiah Collier, who had 16 points, eight assists and five rebounds, finally found his groove in the final 8 minutes. He opened the quarter with a driving layup, got fouled, and made the free throw. He added four more points as the game came to a close, but he set up three of Page's four dunks down the stretch with some big-time assists. A Page dunk and a 3-pointer by Hamilton pushed the lead back into double-digits at 65-54.
