The title of Ed Sheeran's new single ‘Azizam' means ‘my love' in the Persian language. The track and accompanying music video includes references to Persian culture and features famous Iranian pop star Googoosh. She's been banned from singing in Iran since the 1970s.The song has received an outpouring of support from Iranian communities worldwide for its positive and heartfelt representation of Iran. But Googoosh's featuring role has also shed light on the restrictions that women face in Iran, including a ban on singing in public places. HAHAHAHA OK, OK...we're just a bunch of professional musicians with pretty diverse backgrounds who decided to take on a pretty big challenge and have some fun in the process.  Now, you might ask, “Oh yeah? Professional musicians, eh? What makes you think you can play Frank's music as well as [insert Zappa family/band member here]?” Well, maybe you haven't heard of us individually, but  "we're pretty good musicians"  and you probably have heard of the folks on our resumes:  BB King, Mick Fleetwood, Vinnie Colaiuta, Googoosh, Dweezil Zappa, LA Philharmonic, Arthur Barrow, Munich Philharmonic, Bryan Beller, Popa Chubby, Yo Yo Ma, Limelight: A Tribute To Rush, Pinetop Perkins, Chicago Lyric Opera, Madison Opera, blah blah blah....you get the idea. As for Frank's music, he was constantly changing things, both for his own creative choices and to adapt to the different musicians he had over the years. He also understood that his live performances were entertainment: it's supposed to be a rock show, not a piano recital. With all that in mind, we don't think playing Song X from Album Y note-for-note while staring at our shoes is the proper way to go about this. The result of that approach (combined with a lot of homework) is a show that pays respect to Zappa's legacy, but is also new and different and dangerous and FUN, with lots of eyebrows. Kinda like Frank.  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/somethingcame-from-baltim/support

Welcome back to The Abundant Artist, the show that dispels the myth of “the starving artist” and shares how you can live an abundant life as an artist and make a living from your talent one interview at a time.  Today's guest is Kathy Lajvardi, a contemporary mixed media artist based in Laguna Beach, California. Kathy was born in Iran and later migrated to the US when she was nine-years-old – a cultural shift that has shaped her as an artist, designer, author and curator. Her diverse artistic background ranges from reflective resin to large-scale paintings that tell a story, are conceptual, and raise awareness. In this episode, Kathy shares her journey as an artist, from earning her BFA to working with high-profile clients such as Madonna, Beyonce, Lexus, Disney, and Apple. She further talks about how the late night brainstorming sessions with her husband have turned into actual successful projects over the years, and offers her perspective on the Iranian art and culture scene pre and post the 1979 revolution, and how that has influenced her art. Join us in this podcast to learn more about Kathy's art journey, and why she thinks artists should go all out to promote their art themselves rather than waiting to get “discovered”. Key Takeaways: [0:35] Cory welcomes Kathy to the TAA podcast and asks her to introduce herself to the TAA audience. [1:20] Kathy talks about how she went on from earning her art degree to working on motion graphics projects for celebrity musicians, movies and companies like Apple. [4:35] She transitioned into digital experience post her marriage and the birth of her children, and started managing the Graphics department in her husband's advertising agency. [6:25] How Kathy and her husband started organizing wine events with winemakers. [6:38] What was the Somxx event and how did it happen? [9:22] Cory asks Kathy about her connection with Iran. [10:57] Kathy explains the connection between her art and the music she likes to listen to, and why she always works with her headphones on. [13:52] Kathy further talks about her background, and how her choice of music was received by her family. [17:50] Cory asks Kathy to describe her series titled “Unbreakable Queens”. [18:52] Kathy further talks about the Iranian singer Googoosh and her struggles, and how that has inspired the artist's “Unbreakable Queens” series. [22:05] Kathy offers her thoughts on what Iran used to be like before the 1979 revolution. [23:17] Kathy explains in detail how she and her husband organize the events, from visualizing to planning the details to getting sponsors. [30:35] Kathy deep dives into how once she knows what she wants, she plans the steps needed to achieve that. [32:17] Why the “hustle mentality” is important, and how social media can be used as a platform to reach a wider audience. [32:44] Kathy takes her marketing flyers everywhere she goes. [33:29] Art dealers can surely accelerate an artist's career, but Kathy insists that an artist can be their own art dealer too. [34:21] Cory asks Kathy how her events/parties convert into sales. Resigning after just 45 days in office, Liz Truss has cemented herself as the United Kingdom's shortest-serving prime minister. She presided over a period of chaos: her economic plan tanked the pound and sent markets into freefall, raised interest rates and threw ordinary people into panic about their mortgages and the cost of living. Her slew of tax cuts for the wealthy has been ditched now by her new chancellor Jeremy Hunt. Now, the Conservative Party will hold yet another leadership election, aiming to have another prime minister in place by next Friday. But the calls for a general election are growing louder. Can – and should – the Conservative Party really govern Britain right now? Former Conservative MP and minister Sir Alan Duncan joins the program, followed by Labour MP and Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy.  Also on today's show: Robert Draper, author of Weapons of Mass Delusion; wildly popular Iranian singer Googoosh. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

What is it about the rock opera that makes it, as one Times critic wrote, ‘the one masterpiece of Lloyd Webber's career'? Why, after five decades, does it still give pause for theological thought? And how can one piece of music connect such disparate-seeming artists as Dmitri Shostakovich, Googoosh, Lin Mannuel Maranda, and Kanye West? Episode 161 - Robert Noghli is a drummer who began his musical career in Iran before the Islamic Revolution. Under the tutorage of an Armenian drummer, he worked on his craft and began playing with some of the giants of Persian pop music like Ebi, Googoosh, and Dariush. After moving to the United States, he worked with various Assyrian singers like Linda George, Walter Aziz, Shamiram Urshan, and Ogen Betsamo to record some of their most legendary albums in the 1980's, as he continued to perform and record for various Persian singers as well. In this episode we discuss how he came to play the drums, how his knowledge of Assyrian music has helped shape him into the musician he is today, and what he thinks of the current state of Assyrian music. After 20 years of being under house arrest in Tehran, Googoosh is now back and performing for crowds sizing in the tens of thousands. This episode explores the expansive career of Iran's finest Diva. This week Geoff and I explore the mystical Psychedelic Pop sounds of Iranian goddess GOOGOOSH! Born to perform, Googoosh (born Faegheh Atashin) started on the stage at the young age of 3. From there, she grew to be a massive singing success and movie star! She toured all through Iran and even through Europe until the Iranian Revolution, which silenced her voice. But about 20 years later she moved to LA and began singing again, still putting out records to this day.

This episode is dedicated to the great Mr. Owain Phyfe, who has inspired me in so many ways since discovering his work now many, many moons ago.  The picture below is exactly how I remember him; the day I first plowed dreamy-eyed but determinedly through the VA Renaissance fair, to find out where that -enchanting- music was coming from.  And ever since, I have been positively captivated by his incredible voice, his passionate, unique creations, and his lyrical style.  To my knowledge, Mr. Phyfe was a self-taught musician, ancient & medieval linguist and surely, a scholar, and for that, he blows me away even more.Sadly, he passed this year due to pancreatic cancer, but his memory, through his artistry and pure, captivating music, will live on.  Thank you for your song, Mr. Phyfe.  You were the first and only real bard I think I've ever met, and you inspire me to this day.  ♥♥♥On a brighter note, I'd also like to give a shout-out to Madlenka, Bagoas, Mavi, Nina Amaya, and my other friends who're currently attending the Darbukastani Independence Days celebration this weekend. :D  I wish I could be with you all, but my hips are shimmying in time with your music and my spirit is with y'all, wherever we each may be. :) ♥♥♥..Now, on to the music!
