Open to ages 18+, auditions require both a vocal video (under 5 minutes with two contrasting songs) and a dance video (four 8-counts of a jazz combo). Submissions, including a headshot, resume, and availability from June 16 to July 27, are due by May 6 via email to auditions@strandmarietta.org. Rehearsals start June 16, and performers must be prepared to sing and dance concurrently. STORY 2: UPDATE: Three Arrested at Marjorie Taylor Greene Town Hall in Acworth Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene's town hall in Acworth turned chaotic, with three arrests, two taser incidents, and nine protesters removed. Greene emphasized her support for Trump’s agenda, immigration crackdowns, and banning gender-affirming care for minors. She addressed economic concerns, urging families to "rein in" spending, and dismissed claims about Medicare cuts. Protesters criticized her policies, while Greene defended her positions, including the Protect Children's Innocence Act and the Laken Riley Act. Despite disruptions, Greene answered pre-submitted questions, mostly from supportive constituents, and highlighted the growth of the MAGA movement. STORY 3: Carr Launches 'Operation Hold the Line' to Combat Transnational Gangs in Georgia Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr launched "Operation Hold the Line" in Cobb County, a taskforce uniting local, state, and federal agencies to combat transnational gangs, human trafficking, and fentanyl distribution. Inspired by President Trump’s call to action, the initiative builds on Carr’s anti-gang network, established in 2017, and includes federal partners like the FBI and ICE. Carr highlighted the role of transnational gangs in organized retail theft and illicit activities, citing recent successes like shutting down 35 massage parlors linked to gangs. The effort aims to strengthen partnerships and intensify the fight against violent crime in Georgia. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Bethel Christian Academy expand its upper school campus in east Cobb. The project aims to accommodate up to 625 middle and high school students by replacing temporary classrooms with permanent buildings, upgrading athletic facilities, and adding a dining hall. The school plans to move middle grades to the upper campus as its lease for the lower campus ends in 2028. While the bond pricing is pending market conditions, the expansion is expected to create 14-16 jobs in five years, though some board members questioned its alignment with the authority's mission. STORY 5: Kemp signs two tax cut bills Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed two tax relief bills on Tax Day. House Bill 111 reduces the state income tax rate from 5.39% to 5.19%, retroactive to the start of the tax year, while House Bill 112 provides one-time rebates: $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of households, and $500 for joint filers. This refund, pending board approval, follows years of scrutiny over Taylor’s collection of over $425,000 in passport fees as personal income. The issue also sparked a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe and legislative efforts to increase transparency. Taylor’s office has faced additional criticism for severe dysfunction, including a botched software change in 2024 that disrupted court operations. Despite these challenges, Taylor was reelected in 2024. STORY 2: Historic McAfee House Sold for $1, will be Relocated The historic Robert McAfee house, built in the 1840s, will be relocated to Ball Ground, Georgia, after being sold for $1 by Cobb Landmarks to Lee and Brittani Lusk, experienced renovators of historic homes. The Lusks plan to restore the home as a private residence, adhering to historic preservation standards. The move, costing an estimated $75,000-$100,000, with renovations around $200,000, must be completed by May 15. Originally located in Cobb County, the house has significant historical value, including its use as a Civil War headquarters. A preservation easement will protect its historic integrity. Many voters chose to vote early for convenience and to ensure their votes are counted, citing concerns about the economy, taxes, and political leadership. Early voting continues through November 1, ahead of Election Day on November 5. STORY 3:  Gwen Walz Campaigns in Cobb Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz visited Cobb County, Georgia, to rally Democratic voters and support down-ballot candidates, including the Cobb County Board of Education. Speaking alongside local leaders, Walz emphasized the importance of voting in every race to address key issues like education and reproductive rights. Her visit followed a rally by former President Donald Trump in the area. Walz criticized Trump's stance on reproductive rights and encouraged attendees to mobilize voters. Her visit coincided with record-breaking early voter turnout in Georgia, highlighting the urgency of the upcoming election. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Cobb's average rose to 22.8, while Marietta's increased to 22.7. Both districts ranked in the top 10 statewide, with Cobb seventh and Marietta ninth. Marietta showed significant growth, especially among Hispanic students, and excelled in English and reading. Cobb's top schools, Walton and Wheeler, scored 26. Despite recent gains, both districts have seen a decline since 2021. Georgia's average ACT score slightly decreased, but the state still surpassed national averages in all subjects. STORY 5:  New Video Released in Unsolved Cherokee House Party Shooting Case The Cherokee Sheriff's Office released new video footage to help solve the unsolved case of 14-year-old Landon Andrews, who was killed at a house party in 2021. The video shows over 100 kids fleeing the scene, and authorities are seeking those with firsthand knowledge of the incident. Despite processing extensive evidence and witness statements, the shooter remains unidentified. A related fight earlier that night in Kennesaw may be connected. The sheriff's office urges the public to help bring closure to Andrews' family, who established the LB22 Foundation in his memory. A hotline is available for anonymous tips. Parents and children got to familiarize themselves with the school bus and Cheatham Hill Elementary School, which also hosted an open house. This event allowed families to meet teachers, drop off supplies, and explore the school. The day featured cheerleaders from Hillgrove High School and offered an additional open house later for those who missed the morning session. Overall, around 3,600 participants attended, with over 70,000 students expected to ride Cobb's 1,000 buses as school starts today. STORY 2:  Owens Maintains Fundraising Lead in Cobb Sheriff's Race Incumbent Cobb Sheriff Craig Owens, a Democrat, continued his strong fundraising into the summer, collecting $57,000 between April 30 and June 30. While this was a decrease from the previous period, Owens' total still significantly outpaces Republican challenger David Cavender, who raised just over $3,600 in the same period. Owens' notable contributors included Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. and Armor Health. Owens has raised over $547,000 since his first campaign, with more than half spent on advertising and other campaign expenses. Cavender, a U.S. Army combat veteran, has raised $36,000 overall, with significant early spending on campaign costs. The next fundraising deadline is September 30. The expansion aims to improve accessibility, as the bookstore's original upstairs location had limitations for those with disabilities and parents with strollers. Tiny Bubbles, which now combines seating with bookstore space, sees the partnership as mutually beneficial. The event also included a V.I.P. auction and raffle, raising around $35,000 for the theater. Cobb Idol, originally founded by Wendy Bunch and the Cobb Association of Realtors, was revived by the Strand Theatre to continue celebrating local talent. "The resilience that we have to live through booms and busts and pandemics and continue to serve the community, continue to drive foot traffic, continue to create economic opportunities for local people to have jobs and work and express themselves is just incredible. So if you're struggling with a storefront or a vacancy or empty space, just remember to think about the arts” - Julie PhelpsIn this episode, we delve into our special series that charts the resurgence of the arts and culture sector from the shadows of the COVID-19 pandemic. We're bringing together insights from the Co-Production of Arts for A Better Bay Area State of The Arts Summit, an event that unfolded at the Strand Theatre in San Francisco on June 28th, 2023. The summit cast a spotlight on revitalizing our communities through the lens of the arts. A standout session at the summit tackled a pressing issue: securing affordable housing for our artistic community.Emerging from the discussions at the ABBA summit on affordable housing and real estate was a captivating dialogue on utilizing the shifts in the market post-pandemic to enable arts and cultural organizations to secure their own venues for performances. To shed light on this promising avenue, we're joined by Julie Phelps, the Artistic and Executive Director of CounterPulse, and Joshua Simon, a Senior Advisor at the Community Arts Stabilization Trust. They will unpack an inventive real estate strategy that empowered CounterPulse to purchase their performance space—an approach that holds transformative potential for the arts sector across the country. KPFA theatre critic Richard Wolinsky discusses the year in theatre in the Bay Area in 2023, plus a top ten list and two honorable mentions.   Text of the podcast. In the Bay Area, Live theatre companies continued in 2023 to adapt to the post-Covid world. While movie audience sizes seems to be returning to pre-pandemic numbers. live theater remains mostly on life support across the board, mainly because season subscriptions are down by at least a third or maybe more, which means theatergoers are buying tickets on a show by show basis. That makes planning difficult, and it also means artistic directors are less likely to produce shows that are more challenging in favor of audiences pleasers such as musicals, comedies, and most importantly, the warhorses that folks are willing to see over and over again. The great multi-theatre venue, Piano Fight, in the Tenderloin closed its doors in March, leaving a host of younger theatregoers bereft. Bay Area Musicals didn't survive the pandemic, and its successor Landmark Musicals did not get past 2023. Marin Theatre Company, ACT, and the Magic have had truncated seasons, and Cal Shakes chose not to have a season at all. Custom Made is on life support and may never return. But there was still quite a bit of quality theatergoing to be had in the plastic year, and here are ten examples fin no particular order. Clyde's, a former Tony nominee by Lynn Nottage had a sensational production at Berkeley Rep's Peets theatre. As did the creepy and scary Let the Right One in at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre. Margo Hall was phenomenal in Josephine's Feast over at the Magic, and it doesn't get any better than J. Jha in Gertha Reddy's adaptation of the Mahabharata at Z Space, co-produced by the Oakland Theatre Project. Poor Yella Rednecks, Vietgone II at ACT's Strand Theatre looked at a Vietnamese refugee family in America, and Cambodian Rock Band at ACT focused on the generational aftermath of the Killing Fields and the Cambodian Genocide. Then there was Nollywood Dreams, a screamingly funny look at the Nigerian film industry, and Billy Crudup's brilliant performance in Harry Clarke at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre. Rounding out the top ten are San Francisco Playhouse's brilliant production of A Chorus Line, and the very weird, funny and horrifying Locusts Have No King at New Conservatory Theatre. A couple of honorary mentions go to Kander and Ebb's brilliant The Scottsboro Boys at 42nd Street Moon, and William Finn's 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at TheatreWorks. The pantry is expected to distribute food directly to about 700 families weekly, with plans to scale up based on demand. Commercial:  Henssler :15 updated ,  Bed Music fires   From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast    Today is Thursday June the 1st and happy 69th birthday to actor Dennis Haysbert ***Haysbert*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the top stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia Cobb schools touts ‘cutting edge' program which funds teachers' graduate degrees Dobbins employee sentenced to 15 years for assault And the Georgia Supreme Court rejects licensing for lactation care  Plus, PPlus, we'll talk with Leah McGrath of Ingles Markets about healthy dinner ideas All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.   Commercial : ESOG   STORY 1 cutting   The Cobb County School District is celebrating its first group of teachers who are earning graduate degrees at no personal cost. Through the "Georgia's BEST" program, a partnership between Cobb schools and the University of West Georgia, hundreds of educators are pursuing master's and specialist degrees. The program allows teachers to earn advanced degrees with the school district covering the expenses, and the University of West Georgia offering discounted tuition and fees. The initiative aims to improve teacher recruitment and retention, alleviate student debt, and enhance the quality of education. The program has received bipartisan praise and has seen significant interest from teachers. Cobb County plans to expand the program in the future.....read more about this program at mdjonline.com   Story 2: dobbins   Sean David Glover, a 42-year-old Air Force Staff Sgt. who worked at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a violent assault on his girlfriend. A Cherokee County jury found him guilty of aggravated assault — strangulation. Glover entered the victim's apartment last June, allegedly concerned about her contact with her ex-partner. He unlocked her phone, became angry, and physically assaulted her. The victim suffered injuries including a broken wrist, bruises, and marks on her neck. Glover also choked her to the point of blacking out and later raped her. The judge sentenced him to 15 years in prison followed by five years of probation, with additional conditions and restitution.     Story 3: lactation   The Georgia Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that a state law requiring lactation care providers to obtain a license is unconstitutional. The law, passed in 2016, required a state license and limited it to businesses with a certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Plaintiffs, including a certified lactation consultant and a nonprofit organization, argued that the law violated their rights to due process and equal protection. They also contended that the law lacked a substantive connection to public health and safety. Chief Justice Michael Boggs reversed the trial court's decision, finding in favor of the plaintiffs, stating that the regulation did not advance the public purpose in a reasonably necessary manner. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who was sued in his capacity, praised the ruling and has formed a commission to review the necessity of licensing in various professions in the state.   We'll be right back   Break:   CU of GA– Dayco   STORY 4: weapons   The Georgia Supreme Court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by five University System of Georgia professors challenging a 2017 amendment that lifted the ban on weapons on public college and university campuses. The professors argued that the amendment was unconstitutional as it encroached upon the authority of the Board of Regents. The trial court initially dismissed the lawsuit, and the professors appealed to the state Supreme Court. In a unanimous decision, the court ruled the lawsuit moot because the Board of Regents had adopted weapons-carrying policies consistent with the amendment. The court emphasized that the regents' authority to enact the policy was within their legal jurisdiction, regardless of their motivations.......for more on this story visit mdjonline.com       STORY 5: tourism   The Cobb Sports Alliance has obtained the Compete Sports Diversity Leader Designation, becoming a certified leader in sports diversity and inclusion within Cobb County. The certification signifies their commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the sports community. Compete Sports Diversity, which aims to unite the world through sports and supports LGBTQ+ athletes and organizations, offers the Sports Diversity Leader Training and Certification Program. The organization also hosts summits, provides DEI training, and connects sports organizations with partners and convention bureaus. Cobb Travel & Tourism, a nonprofit organization focused on attracting visitors to Cobb County, oversees the Cobb Sports Alliance.   Story 6: tourism   Various local arts, culture, and tourism organizations in Marietta have submitted grant requests totaling approximately $874,000 to the city. The City Council is currently reviewing the requests and is expected to vote on the final allocation in two weeks. The largest funding request is from city staff, seeking around $196,000 for staffing festivals and events. Other notable funding requests come from organizations such as the Marietta History Center, the Strand Theatre, and the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art. The grants are funded through the city's auto rental tax and hotel/motel tax. The council will likely award around $700,000 in grants, and the requested $435,000 for city marketing is expected to be fully granted....   back with more in a moment   Break  Drake – Ingles 9 – Elon   Story 7:  C.O.Y.   Jermaine Sellers, the coach of the Kell High School boys basketball team, celebrated his first state championship after 11 seasons with the program. The Longhorns achieved a record-breaking season with a 28-2 record, the most wins in program history, and captured the Class AAAAA state title for the first time. Kell dominated in their region and made a strong run in the state playoffs, culminating in a 61-53 victory over Eagle's Landing in the championship game. Sellers attributed the team's success to the improvements of key players, strong leadership, and a cohesive team dynamic. The team's experience in a tournament in Las Vegas also played a role in their growth and resilience.     Story 8:  P.O.Y.   Isaiah Collier, a standout basketball player for Wheeler High School, led his team to its third state championship before heading to the West Coast for college. The Southern California signee averaged impressive stats of 20 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals per game. Collier received numerous accolades, including being named the Cobb County Boys Basketball Player of the Year and earning titles such as McDonald's All-American, co-MVP of the game, and Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year. He is regarded as one of the best high school basketball players to come out of Georgia and will join Southern Cal's highly talented freshman class. Collier's success was attributed to his athleticism, skills, hard work, and humility.   Back with closing comments after this   Henssler 60 Signoff- use same bed as open Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. Let #MarchMadness begin. Kennesaw State will square off in the first round of the NCAA tournament; Wheeler knocked off Cherokee to win the state title; The adult spelling be was a huh success; And an area man had written a book to make sure his parents' experiences in the Holocaust are never forgotten.     Now, it seems real. It had been a full week since Kennesaw State defeated Liberty to win the ASUN Conference tournament title and earned a spot in this year's NCAA Tournament On Sunday, the wait came to an end. The Owls earned the Number 14 seed of the Midwest Region and will face third-seeded Xavier on Friday in Greensboro, North Carolina. Tip-off is set for 12:40 p.m. on TruTV. The winner will advance to play either sixth-seeded Iowa State or the Number 11 seed — the winner of a First Four game between Mississippi State and Pittsburgh. Xavier, which lost to Marquette in the Big East Conference title game, is one of the highest-scoring teams in college basketball, averaging 84.1 points per game, but Kennesaw State coach Amir Abdur-Rahim said he knows exactly what to expect in the matchup. He said Sean Miller's teams are always physical and will guard well. Abdur-Rahim said he has seen Miller's teams up close before. Twice as an assistant at Texas A&M, he coached against Miller's then-Arizona teams in early-season showcase tournaments. In 2016 the Aggies played the Wildcats and fell 67-63. A year later, Texas A&M got a point closer but lost 67-64. While the history with Miller may not have played in Abdur-Rahim's favor, he is still happy about who and where the Owls will be playing as they make their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Greensboro is only 5½ hours from Kennesaw. For fans interested in purchasing tickets can visit the NCAA's official ticketing site at NCAA Tickets dot Com. As the final seconds ticked off the clock in Saturday's Class AAAAAAA state championship game at the Macon Coliseum, Isaiah Collier began to let his emotions out.  The Wheeler point guard dribbled the ball for the last time, fell to his knees and had a quick moment of prayer. Just seconds later, he was swallowed up by his teammates as the Wildcats defeated Cherokee 78-58 for their third state title in four years and the ninth in the program's decorated history. The fact that Collier was still on the floor at the end was a surprise to some, but it was something the Southern California-bound Naismith High School Player of the Year asked his coach for. Collier wanted to honor the memory of Khalil Hardison, a former Wheeler player who drowned last August while swimming in the Chattahoochee River. Hardison was Collier's cousin and the son of Wildcats coach Larry Thompson. Once Collier got back to his feet after the dogpile, he was still emotional. With tears coming down his face, he and Thompson shared a long hug, and then the celebration started in earnest.  In his final game, Collier showed why he is one of the best -- if not the best -- high school players in the country. He finished with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting and seven assists, and he was key during an 11-3 third-quarter run that helped put the game away. Wheeler finished the season on a 17-game winning streak and without a loss to a team from Georgia. The victory over Cherokee was the Wildcats' 12th in a row in the series and the 21st of the last 22.  The Downtown Marietta Development Authority and the City of Marietta have announced the 2023 Glover Park Concert Series, presented by Marietta Dental Associates. The smell of beer and popcorn permeated the Strand Theatre as the boisterous crowd settled in for the evening's entertainment. A voice boomed overhead as lights flickered on and off, creating dancing shadow-apparitions on the walls of the Strand's art-deco interior. It was time for the crowd to quiet down so the costume-clad performers could make their introduction. So began the Sixth Annual Adult Spelling Bee, a fundraiser for the Cobb branch of Communities in School, a school dropout prevention and intervention organization that offers resources to students in need. Each team burst out from behind curtains to music blaring and roars from the crowd, running up one aisle and down the other, slapping hands with the audience before jumping on stage to find their seats. By scanning a QR code from the event's program, audience members could participate by donating money throughout the show. People could vote for at least $1 each time to support their favorite group, or they could buy a team back into the contest for $150 if a word was spelled incorrectly. The crowd, as well as the contestants, were fired-up throughout the night. As each team rose from their seats and approached the mic, dancing and singing would inevitably ensue before a spelling attempt was made. Dressed as Disney princesses Snow White, Cinderella and Ariel, the “Once Upon A Time” team — Joy Doss, Bobby Johnson and Matt Giddens — received the most votes as the fan favorite, raising more than $3,000. Team “Bee-g Bang Theory,” comprised of Raymond Goslow, Michael Miller and Andy Tatnall, spelled the final word — incunabulum — correctly and received trophies for winning the big event. In all, over eighty five thousand dollars was raised. Michael Ruskin was on a mission as the last surviving member of his family to write about what his parents endured at the hands of the Nazis. That drive culminated in Ruskin sharing his parents' story of surviving the Holocaust in his book, “The Vow: A Love Story & The Holocaust.” Ruskin spoke about the book Saturday at the Marietta History Center. He told attendees his parents did not talk much about what they experienced when he was growing up. Ruskin did not know the full story until after his parents died. After his father died, he found a bunch of old documents and photos while cleaning out his father's Miami condo. This was the beginning of his journey to tell the story of his late parents, David and Dora Ruskin. Michael Ruskin spoke about how his parents were forced into a Lithuanian ghetto, called a “safe zone,” early in their marriage. They survived horrific conditions in cattle cars as they were shipped into the unknown. His father ended up in Dachau, the first concentration camp built by the Nazis outside of Munich. Ruskin's mother was sent to the Stutthof Concentration Camp in northern Poland with his sister, Rose, who was only 3 years old when she was killed. Somehow, his parents survived. At the end of World War II, David Ruskin was liberated in 1945 by American troops, and Dora Ruskin was liberated the same year by the Russians. The book describes their journey to reunite and move forward. For more information on Ruskin's book, visit The Vow a Love Story dot com. Sitting at the corner of Barrett Parkway and Bells Ferry Road, boarded up and abandoned, the fate of the Robert McAfee House is uncertain. There is a historical marker in front of the house, but the house and land are not protected, according to Trevor Beemon, executive director of Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society. The property is owned by the Medford Family Limited Partnership. The house was constructed for early Cobb County settlers Eliza and Robert McAfee. During the Civil War, according to a historical marker on the front lawn, the house was used by Brigadier General Kenner Garrard as his headquarters shortly after Union forces seized Big Shanty, now known as Kennesaw. The house is located in unincorporated Cobb, and an application to rezone the land it sits on is currently being reviewed by the Cobb Board of Commissioners. A developer is looking to buy the land and build a car wash on the property, Beemon said. The only way to save the house is to relocate it, Beemon said, and using the house as a commercial structure isn't financially viable. In order to help make sure historic properties in Cobb are protected, Beemon urges people to attend Cobb County Board of Commissioners meetings on a regular basis. Historic homes on private property can be tough to save. Director of the Marietta History Center Amy Reed said that there is only so much the historical society can do, but they would love to be able to save this house.    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With the ASUN championship game tied 66-66, and Terrell Burden heading to the free throw line with 0.7 seconds on the clock, Kennesaw State coach Amir Abdur-Rahim had a simple message for his senior point guard. "I love you," he said.  The feeling was mutual. Burden was the first player signed once Abdur-Rahim became coach four seasons ago. That first year they suffered through a 1-28 season. Sunday, with a simple made free throw, Burden had a chance to beat Liberty and send the Owls to their first NCAA tournament. The first of two shots swished through the net to give KSU a 67-66 lead. What did Abdur-Rahim say before Burden's second attempt?  "Miss it high," he said.   Burden, who finished with a team-high 19 points and was named ASUN tournament MVP, did exactly that. He had the ball bounce off the back of the rim and go straight up. By the time the ball was rebounded, the final moment ticked off the clock and the celebration began with the Owls and the sell out, boisterous KSU Convocation Center record 3,805 fans.  Now, the Owls will have to wait for a week before they find out who they will be playing and where. In the latest Bracketology on ESPN.com, KSU is penciled in as a No. 15 seed and playing Baylor in Denver. CBSSports.com has the Owls as a 14-seed, also playing Baylor, but in Columbus, Ohio. KSU is the first team since BYU in 2001 to advance to the NCAA tournament less than five years after a season with one or zero wins. People thronged to Marietta Square for a full day of games, laughter and revelry during Marietta the Gathering's inaugural festival celebrating the geek community Saturday. A geek, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “an enthusiast or expert who is obsessively interested in a particular subject.” The term “geek” has been used as a derogatory word in the past, stereotyping certain people or hobbies. Today, it is seen as a badge of honor to gamers, pop culture enthusiasts and others who follow their creative passions. There wasn't a cloud in the sky to obstruct the sun as revelers walked by tents, looking at goods and interacting with people plying their wares in the shade. Even though she spends 46% of her income on housing costs, Laurelle's current apartment makes her concerned for her family's health. The electrical wiring in the apartment is substandard, mold is on the ceiling and stray cats' nest in the HVAC vents. Laurelle's looking forward to being able to provide her 14-year-old daughter and her energetic 11-year-old son separate bedrooms. She says she heard about Habitat for Humanity's international work where she grew up in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, but she decided to apply when her son's therapist told her about the homeownership program. Now, she's on her way to building a new home in Marietta, with an affordable, zero interest mortgage. More than 50 people gathered to recognize African-American men in the community who have made significant strides in American society. The Cobb County NAACP will celebrate African-American women who have impacted their community during Women's History Month in March. The evening's celebration serves as a reminder that the struggles and progress of the past are essential to the present, Blackburn said. In between songs and award presentations, Blackburn peppered the audience with famous quotes from Black Americans such as Ava DuVernay, John Lewis, Serena Williams, Harriet Tubman and Alice Walker, trying to see if the audience could identify the source. The honorees gave brief speeches thanking the NAACP and emphasizing the importance of the organization. For a full list of honorees, please head over to MDJ Online dot com. Grown-up spellers should be buzzing: The 6th annual Adult Spelling Bee, a fundraiser for the Cobb branch of Communities in Schools, will take place Friday at the Strand Theatre. Last year's event raised over $60,000 for Communities in Schools of Marietta and Cobb, a school dropout prevention and intervention organization that offers resources to students throughout both districts to fund such programs as career fairs and book distributions. This year's goal is $75,000, according to Jennifer Lynch, who leads the group's fundraising efforts. Participating teams, which this year include different police chiefs around Cobb, young professionals, lawyers and judges and Kiwanis Club members, dress up in costume and imitate characters for the event. The event begins with a VIP program at 5:30 p.m., followed by the start of the general program at 7 p.m. Tickets for this year's bee are available at the Strand's website. General admission tickets are $20, and VIP tickets are $75.   Want to better ensure your fishing success at your local waterway?
