Dear Life Warriors, What an incredible story.THE PERSON -Creative at heart, passionate by trade. Ever since Nik was a little girl growing up in Brooklyn, NY,  her happy place has always been an escape to her creative outlets. This is where she excelled and thrived: in fashion, dance and cosmetology. Nik recalls many childhood memories being creative, from building pilgrims out of clay to exploring nature with her late mother. She also learned the importance of appearance and dressing to the "T" from her late Guyanese grandmother, who never left the house without lipstick nor being dressed like the outdoors was her runway, even if it was just a trip to the grocery store. Definitely something Nik took after—minus the lipstick (lol)!!                                                                                                                                                                                          THE CAREER -A young designer who got her start in 1998. Nik dove in head first after a major break in 2002 when she was introduced to the Dipset Family. That's when she discovered that wardrobe styling actually existed as a career. Her determination, dedication, hard work, and eagerness to learn afforded her a plethora of amazing opportunities to work with many greats along the way, like world renowned photographers: Albert Watson, Vikram Pathak, Dennis Leupold; artists: Cardi B, Estelle,TI, Nicki Minaj, Rotimi, Dave East; athletes - Carmelo Anthony, Jimmy Butler, Demariyus Thomas, Matt Harvey; film: LaChanze, Terri J. Vaughn,Tara Wallace - to name a few. While Nik was building her foundation as a well rounded stylist, designing cooled on the back burner for years. Opportunities to design only surfaced for clients out of necessity, and it didn't go much further than that. Nik decided to return to her roots 22 year later by launching N.E.W by Nik Woodz in 2020.Purchase Char's Journal: https://www.amazon.com/30-DAYS-NEW-YOU-JOURNAL/dp/0578726572Subscribe to the show on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DearLifeWarriorsABOUT DEAR LIFE WARRIORS (DLW): Dear Life Warrior's mission is to empower people of color with unyielding tenacity to hang on until destiny is fulfilled. Our vision is that everyone that watches Dear Life Warriors will have a great understanding that the Journey of Life is a process, and if a process is to be fruitful it will take determination to reach completion.#dearlifewarriors #mentalhealthatwork #leadershipdevelopment #lifecoachingtips #lifecoach #softskillstraining #professionaldevelopment #softskillstrainer #corporatetrainer #executivecoach #mentalhealth

A black square on Instagram doesn't make you an anti-racist, but there is a path to follow. Welcome to From Woke to Work, the Anti-Racist Journey, a podcast created and hosted by Kamala Avila-Salmon, with the mission to make an impactful dent in people's understand of how to actually combat racism. Whether you're an ally ready to take action or a black person with a bunch of ally-related questions, this podcast will draw a clear path for you to follow towards true anti-racism. Our journey together, at least this portion of it, is coming to an end. Now that we have fully unpacked the anti-racist journey, we want to end with FAQs. If you've listened before, you know that our FAQs are not “frequently asked questions” (though they are) but instead stands for “frequent ally questions”, which are questions that Kamala has heard a lot in her time cultivating intentional conversations about race and racism. When you're learning something new, it's normal to have questions and I think having lots of questions CAN be a sign of high-engagement. Notice we said they CAN be- sometimes, they instead function as excuses to not take action, as reasons why it's too hard, too complicated, or not practical. Examples of those include “I know we need to talk about Black issues but what about….(insert some other group here?” Or “Don't you think White people face just as much racism as Black people now?” In today's episode, we will focus on genuinely offered, highly constructive FAQs. The ones that come from people who really want to do the work and I invited back a few of our amazing guests from past episodes to help me unpack the best ones. Welcome back Jovian Zayne, the powerhouse who kicked us off in the Awareness episode, Chia-Lin Simmons who helped us sort through the importance of empathy, and Terri J Vaughn, who joined us for a discussion on Allyship.  Jump straight into: (02:15) - I said or did something perceived as racist, what should I do now? - “If you're more concerned about being right than getting it right, you will continue to make mistakes and sit in it in a way that doesn't move the work forward” (11:36) - Strategies and tactics to increase commitment to hire diverse talent… or create one - “You're going to have to examine policies and procedures and examine the relationships you have that help to bring in exceptional people of color, and we're everywhere.” (23:03) - Do we really need more data to know that diversity is good business? - “They already know the impact of our culture, of our voices, of our fashion, of our style… I think that it's just embedded in their culture to find ways to impact our influence by saying stuff like, well, they don't sell over the seas.”  (34:37) - Who should I be supporting? Vetted leads of organizations that are tackling racial equity issues  - "One that comes to mind for me is the Equal Justice Institute. Changing systems, as opposed to solely focusing on individual cases or individual anecdotes. I think we have to really look at the root causes and the root systems." (36:26) - Why it takes a lot more than just creating a Diversity Chief Officer, goals and metrics to educate inside an organization - "Empathy is so necessary for us to see each other. You've got to fund this work. You can't say, 'we want to allocate $10,000 for this work over the year, or even for a day of training'… that just doesn't work. D&I work helps people to be fundamentally better." (43:46) - Stop clapping yourself because you marched. On diversity clauses in the VC world and other ways to give real crap about these issues - "When was the last time that you bought something from a black owned business? […] No more writing checks to VC's who don't have a black woman on staff. That's not an investment.” (48:07) - How to acknowledge the inherent challenges my black teammates may face in a predominantly white company or team? -  "With that same thinking, I invite the person to think 'How

Welcome back to FROM WOKE TO WORK: The Anti-Racist Journey. On this episode host, Kamala Avila-Salmon, discusses the next level on the journey, ALLYSHIP. Let's be clear, you are not an ally just because you think you are. You are also not an ally just because you would like to be. You are not an ally because you have Black friends. You are not an ally because you think the cops that killed Breonna Taylor and George Floyd and Jacob Blake and so many others should be locked up and stripped of their badges immediately. That is because ally is a verb. It is a set of consistent actions to interrupt and disrupt the status quo of systemic racism and anti-Blackness when you see it. It is DOING things- it is not feeling things or thinking things or reading things. It is ACTION, not words. To have this discussion about the importance of real, true allyship, Kamala is joined by a powerhouse panel of guests: actress, producer and director Terry Vaughn, Overbrook Entertainment Producer and Development Executive, Dougie Cash, and marketing professional Michael Hoffman specializing in the cross-section of entertainment and digital communities. Jump straight into: (00:44) - The definitions of true allyship - “Ally is someone who will speak up and go to bat for you when opportunities present themselves that fit you. An ally is really someone that puts their caring into action.” (09:57) - The intersection between marginalized communities - “Sitting in that place of privilege within my own marginalized community helps make me aware of the importance of making time and space to support those around me who don't have those experiences.” (16:41) - It was the year of 2020: The sudden (and quite upsetting) US' racial awakening- “It made me think about just us as a race and how much trauma we've all been carrying.” (27:04) - Tokenism, allyship and the needed empowerment of the black community - “Somebody that literally stood up and said: ‘I want her, I want to give her this opportunity, I've seen her work. I know how much time she's put into this craft of hers. I want her.'  Everyone that has ever done that for me is black.” (36:10) - How tangible is your allyship? - “Where are the spaces where what you're doing as an ally is hard? Where are the spaces where it actually is requiring you to give something up and to sacrifice? (44:20) - The Frequent Ally Questions: On performative allyship and non-black saviors - “Don't take some of the things that are being said personally as if you're being attacked, try to hear it for the context in which it's being spoken. Understand it's okay to disagree.” Resources Follow Terri on https://www.instagram.com/terrijvaughn (Instagram) and https://twitter.com/terrijvaughn (Twitter) Follow Dougie on https://www.instagram.com/dougiecash (Instagram)  Check out the https://www.facebook.com/WMNCpodcast (We Might Need Counseling) Podcast Follow Michael on https://www.instagram.com/mh0ffman (Instagram) Thanks for tuning in! Music veteran, Hip Hop Professional creator, and founder of the "Silence the Shame" movement, Shanti Das, joins The Brink of Midnight Podcast with John Brenkus.   Shanti Das is a name popular with some of the most successful urban artists including Outkast, Usher, Toni Braxton, TLC, Jermaine Dupri, Prince, and L.A. Reid, among many others. She climbed her way to the top of music marketing working at La Face Records, Capitol Records, Arista, Columbia, and finally at Universal as their Executive Vice President of Marketing. She had it all going on, beloved by countless artists and music professionals, but no one really knew of the periods of darkness and depression Shanti would experience with her unprocessed feelings from her father's suicide. One particular dark moment, after contemplating ending her life, she reached out for help and began the process of true healing and now she's made it her mission to help others battling the same darkness.    Out of her most difficult time, the seed was planted for what would become her "Silence the Shame" movement for mental wellness and advocacy. She is peeling back the layers of shame and stigma surrounding mental health issues, touring the country, helping students, collaborating on research with Emory University, and sparking dialogue with the help of friends from the music industry including: Nick Cannon, Bell Biv DeVoe (BBD), Estelle, Andra Day, Will Packer, Stephanie Mills, Takeo Spikes, Chloe X Halle, Shanice, Flex Alexander, Terri J Vaughn, Nicci Gilbert Daniels and Ed Lover. Shanti, like the meaning of her name, is bringing peace to the masses and helping save lives. In this poignant conversation, Shanti bravely tells her story, educates, and provides tools for anyone in need. She believes "peace is the new success" and that when we can all help each other out, we all win!   For full show notes, visit: www.brinkofmidnight.com | Contact: info@brinkofmidnight.com | Connect on Socials: @brinkofmidnight (twitter, instagram, Facebook) and @johnbrenkus_

Today on the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Economic Opportunities for Black Americans, we speak to director, Noel Calloway, whose film, Life, Love, Soul is a pause in the narrative that is America today. If 1 and 3 children are living in homes without their fathers, then what does that say about our collective sense of family and the role men play in the lives of their children. When we look at men like Martin King and at his family, the sacrifice they made for the nation and world, when their father was absent from home too many times to count, before he was killed. How many important engagements did he miss? How many goodnight kisses were imagined in phone calls home? In Life, Love, Soul Calloway's character, Roosevelt, raised by a single mom, doesn't know his father and perhaps thinks he doesn't need to know him when the two lives collide in catastrophy when his mother and younger sibling are killed and he has to spend his senior year in high school with dad. Don't expect a cliche here. the director's story which plays quite close to home, is anything but what one expects. it is perhaps this unexpected tale that keeps one engaged and then delighted enough to want to see it again. I think I watched it a total of 5-6 times (smile). A graduate of Clark Atlanta University, the native NYer, Calloway's first feature sets a high bar in story and cast with many box office headliners like Terri J Vaughn, Jamie Hector, Chad Coleman and new actors, like Valerie Simpson and lead actor,
