The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Shawn Lay. An emeritus history professor at Coker College in South Carolina, Dr. Lay studies Ku Klux Klan activity and the history of Racism in the United States. Gus discovered his 1995 publication, Hooded Knights on the Niagara: The Ku Klux Klan in Buffalo, New York, while preparing to speak with Anna Blatto. With Payton Gendron's most recent White Terrorist attack at an east Buffalo Tops grocery store, Gus thought Dr. Lay's book should be plastered on media outlets nationwide, along with Joseph G. Christopher's reign of terrorism, to provide accurate historical context. That has not happened. We'll discuss the highly educated, well-to-do White Men who joined the notorious terrorist organization, and we'll highlight the continuity between the KKK concerns of a century ago to the current-day gripes of Payton Gendron and Whites collectively. Interestingly, very early in the text, Dr. Lay reveals that he is married to a "woman of color." And a non-white listener suggested Gus incorporate a bit more "sweetness" when speaking with White guests. He divulged that he "identifies" with White guests who are insulted and "interrogated" by Gus, who operates from the "privileged seat" as an interviewer. #JoesphGChristopher #PaytonGendron #22CaliberKiller #OJSimpson #TheCOWS13 INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 720.716.7300 CODE: 564943#

For more than 30 years, Stedman Graham has been writing books, teaching in colleges, working in communities, leading non-profits, and speaking at workshops throughout the world. In all that time, he has come to know one thing: leadership is everything. The needs of the 21st century cannot be met by “followers.” According to Stedman, the world is changing at warp speed, and people must be able to stand on a solid platform of self-awareness, equipped with the tools required for self-leadership that allow them to adapt to the ever-changing technologies, ideologies, and circumstances of their lives. Most impotantly, Before you lead others, you must first be able to lead yourself. Graham has authored 12 books, including two New York Times bestsellers, "You Can Make It Happen: A Nine-Step Plan for Success" and "Teens Can Make It Happen: Nine Steps to Success." His most recent book, "Identity Leadership," is the primary focus of this episode. Actively involved in education, he is a former adjunct professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago where he taught a leadership course based on his Nine-Step Process. At the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, he taught a management strategy course entitled "The Dynamics of Leadership." He also founded and directed George Washington University's Forum for Sport and Event Management and Marketing - the first of its kind in the country. “K” is for Kalmia Gardens in Darlington County. Named for the spectacular display of kalmia latifolia [mountain laurel] growing on a dramatic bluff carved by Black Creek, the gardens opened to the public in 1935.At the top of the 60 foot-high bluff is a one room-deep farmhouse built in 1820. The house overlooks the floodplain of Black Creek and is surrounded by a garden containing many exotic ornamentals planted by the garden's founder, May Roper Coker. When the Cokers purchased the land in 1932, she began transforming what had been a local trash dump. She planted camellias, wisteria, tea-olives, and azaleas and created trails down the bluff into what was then known as “Laurel Land.” In 1965, Mrs. Coker deeded Kalmia Gardens to Coker College in honor of her late husband, David R. Coker.

Note from the AuthorMy new book "Burying the Lead: The Media and the JFK Assassination" explores how the power elite worked with the media--from the murder until today. Three days after the assassination, just after Ruby killed Oswald, the FBI and the Deputy Attorney General issued a memo stating that "the public must be convinced that Oswald is the lone assassin and that he does not have confederates." The mass media followed compliantly, and in essence, drove the getaway car. We learned from the Senate Intelligence Committee, after Watergate, that the media had between 400-600 reporters cooperating in one way or another with the CIA.The media was banned from the Warren Commission hearings, yet on the day that the 888 page Warren Report was released, it was unanimously supported by the mainstream media. The NYT called it "exhaustive", while those who disagreed were called "witch-hunters". CBS broadcast a two hour "illustration" of the Report on that day. Yet the 26 volumes of hearings and exhibits that the Report was based on were not released for another 2 months. It was primarily the public along with the alternative media which steadily clarified the contradictions and oversights in the Report and prodded the fourth estate. When New Orleans DA Jim Garrison reopened the investigation, he confronted psychological warfare from the CIA and FBI as well as elements of the mass media. Well-known columnist Jack Anderson served as a hostile liaison to the FBI by interviewing Garrison at length and then reporting to the FBI. When the House Select Committee on Assassinations was set up to reopen the assassinations of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. they did not get cooperation from the CIA and the military. HSCA Chief Counsel Robert Blakey declared "My position about the agency is that they did not cooperate with us,, and therefore everything they told us was a lie...We were had." The chair of the HSCA Congressman Richardson Preyer, told me in 1989 that he was deeply frustrated that the military destroyed many of their files, and that his committee needed more time, money and government cooperation.By 1991 the media, government, and academia had let the case drift into history, until Oliver Stone's movie JFK. The public uproar pushed congress to pass the JFK Act to declassify the remaining documents. They released more than 4 million pages that congress had not yet seen. The law mandated that all of the documents be released by October 2017, yet thousands of files still remain classified. As Kennedy aide and historian Arthur Schlesinger declared,"we were at war with the national security people." JFK was planning to withdraw combat troops from Vietnam, he proposed a joint space shot with the Soviets, he stopped nuclear testing above ground and was moving to ban all nuclear testing, he was trying to control the CIA, he was exploring diplomacy with Cuba, he pushed through the Alliance for Progress, he was influencing conditions on World Bank loans, he was vigorously prosecuting the mafia, he was pushing to end the oil depletion allowance, he pressed to close 77 military bases and would have retired J. Edgar Hoover. All of that changed after his death.John Kennedy's challenge to Eastern Europe in 1962 through Voice of America remains vital today, "We seek a free flow of information, for a nation that is afraid to judge truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people.”About the Author Mal Hyman has taught for 42 years in public schools, a medium security prison, and at Coker College as a professor of sociology. He has done human rights work in eight countries, monitored foreign elections with the UN, and was the Democratic candidate for the US Congress in SC 7th. Humans have coped with tragedy using ritual and memorials since the Neolithic era. Doka called a memorial a space invested with meaning, “set aside to commemorate an event such as a tragedy.” Memorialization is a ritual of bereavement, the creation of a place, permanent or not, that facilitates the persistence of memory. This space allows for the restructuring of the social network between the living, those who create the memorial, and the dead, those for which the memorial is created. Memorialization happens in both the analog and digital contexts. In fact, some now decline to recognize a distinction between the on- and offline worlds. In his new book, Journalism and Memorialization in the Age of Social Media (Palgrave MacMillan, 2015), Peter J. Gloviczki, an assistant professor at Coker College, conceptualizes online memorials as networked remembrance spaces. These social media posts and groups are “immediate, interactive and public and they function across a great distance.” Online memorials are both user-driven – the users drive the conversations and are responsible for keeping up the sites – and story-driven – the sites are places where users tell stories related to the subject(s) of the memorial. Thorough, fact-based journalism plays an important role in the maintenance of online memorials. According to Gloviczki, news reports provide the foundation for the discussion of events, as well as being central to making sense of those events. So significant is journalism for online memorials that, in some cases, a memorial will cease once coverage of that event ends. But many online memorials continue long after media interests concludes. The persistence of these sites demonstrates how online memorials “disrupt the notion of a finite end.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

American Tennis with Chuck Kriese - Broadcast of November 11, 2014. On today's show, coach chuck kriese interviews Coach Bill Simpson who has recently become the head coach at Coker College in South Carolina. The topic of today's show is Collegiate coaching as a profession vs. the tennis coaching opportunities in other venues. As college coaching has long been regarded as one of the best ways to teach the sport of tennis in American, it has recently become more fragile with the elimination of so many collegiate teams and the down-grading of its importance. Coach Simpson speaks to the strengths in the profession, but just as well warns about the dangers and the landmines of this noble calling.
