The ALL ME® Podcast Nutrition Strategies to Optimize Recovery – Kevin Luhrs  Athletes are always looking for a competitive advantage when it comes to their performance. Whether trying to reduce muscle soreness, refuel your gas tank, or help your muscles repair and rebuild after an intense lifting session, just making small improvements in these areas can make the next training session a little easier. Are there specific nutritional strategies we can take to speed the recovery process? What would happen if we could consume specific nutrients to improve day to day performance and recovery? In this podcast, I'll speak with Gatorade Sports Scientist and Sports Dietitian Kevin Luhrs to discuss what you can do to speed the recovery process from training.                     About Kevin Luhrs Kevin is an Associate Principal Scientist at the GSSI satellite lab at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL.  His primary responsibility includes leading the GSSI Athlete Service Team.  Kevin earned his BS at the University of Nebraska in Nutrition Science and Dietetics while playing football as a defensive lineman for the Cornhuskers.  He then went on to undergo his Dietetic Internship through the Baptist Health System in San Antonio, TX before becoming a Registered Dietitian in 2009.  Shortly after going back to Nebraska to work as a volunteer Sports RD for football, Kevin became the Team Sports Dietitian and Assistant Strength Coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2010. He worked closely with the players, coaches, and support staff while pioneering the Buccaneer's first Sport Nutrition Program over 9 seasons. With the Bucs, his duties included the coordination of all meals and snacks for all players at home and on the road, instructing players what to eat based on their goals and timing of competition for optimal performance and recovery, and the heavy involvement in hydration strategies. A big focus of Kevin's research during this time was the possible correlation of body composition on player risk of injury. He also served as one of the Senior Leaders for the NFL RDs and worked diligently with the NFL and NFLPA on Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) amendments.  Also during this time, he earned his MS in Applied Exercise Science from Concordia University Chicago. Outside of work life, Kevin likes to spend time with his wife, go to movies, travel, and lift weights. On this very latest episode of Toes On The Line, I bring on my former colleague when I was an Intern Strength Coach with the New York Giants, Pratik Patel, Director of Performance Nutrition/Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach. Currently still with the New York Giants, Pratik was the first ever Dietician brought on to Big Blue, and has filled a dual capacity role as both Sports Dietician and Assistant Strength Coach. Pratik starts us off by talking about his dual role with Big Blue, and also how he has been able to become extremely successful within the organization, surviving multiple coaching turnovers. Many of the things he utilizes in his career are lessons from previous experiences, which he has managed to optimize his for his career path. During this episode, Pratik and I wanted to take a different approach than a typical "nutrition" conversation.  We took time to focus on the state of the sport nutrition role, and how it is negatively viewed by most people.  Pratik takes extreme measures in his position and lays out foundational guidelines as to what helped him become successful.  He also talks about his role with the club, and how his interactions and relationships with other coaches and staff members has helped him excel in collaborative efforts between himself and the strength staff. Pratik mentions many fallacies he personally sees in the field of sports, and how most people view dieticians and sport nutritionists in general, and speaks of the root cause of these issues.  He starts by explaining how internships today are not allowing dieticians in the sports industry to fully excel and become indispensable within their organization.  He talks about, education and how many people graduate with no practical experience or any idea of how to apply their knowledge. As Pratik goes on in the episode, he mentions how one day he would hope to fill an administrative role, encouraging the importance of a sports dietician. Pratik's respectful approach is all in essence to aid the sporting industry become full circle at the collegiate level so that athletes can be better guided for greater life choices in their dietary habits.

We look at verticals, we look at 5-10-5s, we looks at 10-meters, we look at front squat, we look at reactive strength index.” 33:12“Winning…. injuries, and if you’re actually improving performance.” 33:58“When I took my job, there was a very large disconnect… you could feel the rift between the Division I sports and the Division III sports.” 35:43“The cool part about the Division III kids is they’re not on a scholarship, so they show up because they want to show up.” 37:48“I think they all now respect each other a little bit more because they all go through the same things.” 38:27“We’ve taken that pseudo quadrennial approach and are saying, ‘Hey by the time these kids are seniors, we’re going to be doing some really fun stuff.’” 39:38“The kids are what draws me to [collegiate strength and conditioning].” 40:10“The process of being a strength and conditioning coach can be hard.” 44:40“You apply to all these internships and you get denied, or you apply to all these jobs, you get denied—you know it’s a ding to the ego.” 44:45“You apply to fifty jobs, you don’t hear back from any of them, and you’re like, ‘Do I really do this?’” 44:52“If you don’t have a network that has a connection to a job, it might not even be worth applying for.” 45:00“There’s some sacrifices that people gotta make—and if you’re not willing to make them, it can be a hard business.” 45:40“Andrew Altoff said something like… ‘If you’re going to say hello to someone at a conference and not follow up with them, don’t even say hello to them.’” 46:17“I don’t think we should really put anything down unless people are hurting kids.” 52:00

Jeff Nichols joins us on the show to talk about the essentials of strength training and conditioning for tactical professionals. We were super stoked to have Jeff take the time to chat with us because of a couple of reasons. Not only was he a member of the Navy SEALS, but Jeff is also one of those rare people who has been able to achieve the educational and research background to go along with his experiences on the teams. Before his military career, Jeff served as the Assistant Strength Coach at Troy University, where he earned his BS in Exercise Physiology. You will find in the podcast that Jeff is extremely dedicated to the men and women who serve our country. Where some strength coaches focus on getting in the gym and crushing workouts, Jeff promotes the essentials strength and conditioning training, like recovery, wellness, and general fitness, and reminds us that there is more to fitness and performance than hitting the weights. Some of the topics discussed are: 1. Where is the strength and conditioning field for tactical professionals going in the next five to ten years? 2. Why tactical professionals are the one group who needs human performance training more than anyone else. 3. Once you make it through selection, whats next? How should you be training? The difference between selection and deselection. 4. The pandemic of noncombat related injuries in the tactical communities. 5. What Jeff would do when the zombie apocalypse occurs. 2:24: Jeff describes his role in building strength and conditioning programs to educate and create resiliency for tactical professionals through the Preservation of The Force Program and its previous title, the Human Performance Program. 4:32 – Jeff talks about one of the original strength and conditioning coaches, Boyd Epley, and how during the 80’s these coaches were ahead of their time. Fast forward 30 years and the tactical athlete field is looking a lot like the state of strength and conditioning during the 80’s. 8:56 -“A lot of great progress is born out of necessity.” The changes in the army toward making the CSCS an MOS and the need for shifts in the way we train tactical professionals and athletes. 11:44 – Why tactical professionals are the one group who needs human performance training more than anyone else. College and professional sports need human performance training, however, think about the average career length of most semi and pro athletes when compared to a police officer or firefighter. 14:26 – The one thing holding back progress in strength and conditioning for tactical athletes. 21:15 – Once you make it through selection, whats next? How should you be training? The difference between selection and deselection. 24:14 – We discuss one of the most important, but most often neglected parts of training. 29:02 – Getting away from “Go do this because I said go do it,” and answering the why? Why do we do what we do? 31:15 – We discuss fitness standards and the impact of the debacle of a court case in Colorado Springs. http://denver.cbslocal.com/2015/11/10/female-springs-officers-win-lawsuit-no-longer-have-to-take-physical-fitness-tests/ 34:48 – The pandemic of noncombat related injuries in the tactical communities and how focusing on the essentials of strength and conditioning can reduce injuries and save lives. 37:45 – One of the biggest problems is getting the chain of command on board with a wellness program. We discuss these issues and examples of success. If you are a strength coach and need info on the money saved by wellness programs, send us an email at walker@trainfightrecover, and we will get you some data to use when talking to your department, unit, or agency. 41:43 – End the show on a positive note with some questions on Jeff’s daily routine, the zombie apocalypse, things he is not good at, and how to track Jeff down for more information.
