Valerio Marra"La nuova maestra"Edizioni Piemmewww.edizpiemme.itFrascati, Castelli Romani.

Commercial : ESOG - Elon   STORY 1 wreck   A tragic car crash occurred in Smyrna, resulting in the death of a 15-year-old male passenger. The crash took place around 10:18 p.m. on East-West Connector near Creekside Villas Way. According to the Cobb County Police Department, an 18-year-old driver was traveling west at a speed well above the 45 mph limit when the vehicle left the road onto the grass shoulder. While attempting to steer back onto the road, the car spun across the westbound lanes and collided with a tree in the center median. The young passenger was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. The incident is under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact investigators at 770-499-3987. ......................……... read more about this at mdjonline.com     Story 2: hit   A hit-and-run accident in Smyrna involving a moped has left the rider with serious injuries. The incident took place on Smyrna Powder Springs Road near Vineyard Way. A 31-year-old Marietta man was eastbound on a black moped when a vehicle turned left from Vineyard Way in front of him. This caused the moped rider to skid and overturn, and the other vehicle ran over both the moped and the rider. The driver of the other vehicle fled the scene, heading west on Smyrna Powder Springs Road. The moped rider was hospitalized with serious injuries. Police are searching for the vehicle, possibly a Jeep, with undercarriage damage, and are seeking information from the public.   Story 3: court   Two veterans have graduated from the Cobb County Veterans Accountability and Treatment Court, an 18-month program designed to help veterans address issues related to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The program is tailored to veterans and provides counseling, job training, and other services to address PTSD-related concerns such as substance abuse and mental health issues. The recent graduation marked the 19th class of veterans to complete the program, bringing the total number of participants who have graduated to 60. The program aims to reduce recidivism, assist veterans in becoming productive citizens, and provide intensive case management to address mental health challenges......…..(pause)   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. As a result, students were kept in their 4th-period classes for an additional 15 minutes. The school's principal, Diona Brown, assured parents that the situation occurred in an isolated area of the campus, and no students were at risk during the incident. After the police department's assistance, the school resumed its normal schedule, and the principal promised to maintain open lines of communication with parents regarding any matters affecting the school and their children.     STORY 5: art The partnership between Wellstar and Augusta University Health Systems (AUHS), announced in December, officially commenced operations. This 40-year agreement will see Wellstar invest nearly $800 million over the next decade in AUHS facilities, including Augusta University Medical Center. This partnership aims to enhance healthcare across Georgia, expand telemedicine programs for rural areas, and address the state's physician and nurse shortage. Despite criticism from some state lawmakers, Wellstar defends its hospital closures, stating that they were due to aging infrastructure, low patient volumes, rising labor costs, and the loss of coronavirus relief funds, making them distinct from the new partnership with AUHS. The unified system resulting from this partnership will be called Wellstar MCG Health.       We'll be back in a moment   Break:   Powers  - Ingles 2 - JRM   Story 6: ksu   In the season opening college football game between Kennesaw State and Tusculum, Kennesaw State's quarterback, Jonathan Murphy, made an impressive play midway through the third quarter. He executed a pirouette to evade a defender and ran for a 55-yard touchdown. However, in the same game, during the fourth quarter, Kennesaw State's Deonte Morris intercepted a pass and had a clear path to the end zone. Instead of scoring an 80-yard touchdown, he dropped the ball right before crossing the goal line. His teammate, Jordan Miles, picked up the ball and was credited with the touchdown. Despite the mistake, Coach Brian Bohannon emphasized the lesson learned and the importance of hustle. Morris may be teased by his teammates but has hopefully learned from the experience. The Owls went on to win their opener 38-7   Story 7: gilbert   Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert, a former Georgia transfer and highly-rated prospect, was arrested in Lincoln for his alleged involvement in a break-in at a vape and liquor shop. Gilbert is accused of attempting to steal over $1,600 worth of vape products, cigars, lighters, and Delta 8 after breaking into SJ's Liquor and Vape Shop around 2 a.m. Police found him shirtless inside the store when they responded to a burglary report. Gilbert was arrested without incident after he crawled through a shattered glass door. He is charged with burglary, which is a felony, and faces a potential 20-year prison sentence. Gilbert appeared in court via Zoom and decided to represent himself, but the judge appointed the public defender's office to represent him. He was granted bond at $5,000, with a $500 payment required for release, and is scheduled for another court appearance next month.     …Back with final thoughts after   Break:   Henssler 60 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. Beckham was driving a white Hyundai Sonata on Interstate 75 in Marietta with an inoperable brake light and a missing headlight when a motorist reported his erratic driving. The proposed site was adjacent to a waste transfer station and several industrial facilities, leading to concerns about compatibility with residential use. The Vinings Village Homeowners Association opposed the project, emphasizing the area's industrial and potentially harmful environment. Although there were some positive aspects, such as potential infrastructure connections and environmental considerations, the commission ultimately rejected the proposal due to the perceived mismatch between high-density housing and the industrial surroundings.   STORY 5: cannabis   Botanical Sciences, a physician-founded medical cannabis provider, announced plans to open a medical cannabis dispensary in Marietta, Cobb County, near Wellstar Windy Hill Hospital. The dispensary is set to open in late August and will offer products containing 5% THC or less, following Georgia state law. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for July25th Tuesday Publish Date: July 24 Monday   Commercial: Henssler :15   From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast Today is Tuesday July 25th and happy 27th birthday to NFL Running Back Alvin Kamara ***Kamara*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia 1. Cobb development authority to talk affordable housing with Cupid's task force 2. Elections board chair 'not going to be bullied' by Cobb school district 3. And Cobb school board protesters defend teacher fired under 'divisive concepts' law   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Commercial : CU of GA –   STORY 1: housing   The Development Authority of Cobb County will meet with Cobb Chairwoman Lisa Cupid's affordable housing task force, now called "Advance Cobb." The task force aims to study housing affordability and may propose that the development authority gets involved in developing affordable housing, using incentives like other Georgia development authorities. The meeting will present the task force's preliminary findings and discuss how the development authority can support housing. Cobb is developing a new unified development code, which could incorporate task force recommendations. The county's housing prices have increased significantly, making it challenging to achieve affordable housing. Knight mentioned the need for more creative means to build affordable housing due to limitations in federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit programs....................……... Read more about this at mdjonline.com   Story 2: bullied   The Cobb County School District and the Cobb Board of Elections are involved in a lawsuit regarding the school board map. A federal judge ruled that the school district cannot be held liable, but the claim against the Board of Elections remains. The elections board has avoided taking a position on the claims, asserting its role as a nonpartisan administrator of elections. The school district is considering options, including asking the Georgia Attorney General to intervene as a party. The Southern Poverty Law Center, a lead plaintiff, stated that the case against the Board of Elections is proceeding, while the district claimed victory prematurely. The initial lawsuit accused the school district's map of intentional discrimination against communities of color.   Story 3: law   Protesters at a Cobb school board meeting defended a former elementary school teacher, Katie Rinderle, who was fired for violating the state's new "divisive concepts" law. She had read a book about gender identity to her fifth-grade class, leading to complaints from parents. While public commenters were not allowed to address specific personnel matters, they tackled underlying topics, advocating for inclusivity and the representation of all students in classroom literature. The board gave the Superintendent the go-ahead to select members for tribunals leading dismissal hearings for fired teachers, and Rinderle's hearing is scheduled for August 10. She was accused of violating various district policies, including those related to controversial issues and instructional resources selection and acquisition.   we'll be right back   Break: ESOG - Dayco – Ingles 4   STORY 4: shelter   The Cobb County Animal Services shelter is offering a discounted adoption rate of $20 per animal for the rest of July, which includes spaying or neutering and microchipping. The shelter is currently operating at 123% of its capacity, facing an 18% increase in animal intakes compared to last year. To avoid euthanizing animals, they aim to have as many adoptions as possible. The shelter has an 88% "live release" rate, higher than the national average of around 50%. They currently house 169 dogs, 161 cats, and one Vietnamese pot-bellied pig. Most of the dogs are pit bull mixes, but the shelter hopes to challenge the stigma around them   STORY 5: vote   More than 20 Cobb County residents spoke against the county's proposed millage rate increase during a meeting. They cited various reasons for lowering property taxes, including rising property values causing a burden on fixed-income seniors and renters. Many shared personal stories of struggling to afford the increased taxes. A pediatric neuropsychologist expressed concern that higher taxes might force him to sell his home and lose proximity to his children. Some residents questioned Chairwoman Lisa Cupid's claims about her own property tax assessment. The commission will vote on the millage rate at a meeting tonight at 7pm.   Story 6: fee   The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is launching a pilot project to test a mileage-based user fee for electric vehicles (EVs). The aim is to capture revenue from EV drivers as traditional fuel tax revenues decline due to the shift towards electric and hybrid vehicles. The pilot will involve 150 volunteers who will be monitored for the number of miles driven, and the data will be used to gauge the feasibility and user experience of the mileage-based approach. The DOT will also explore options to protect privacy during the experiment. The project will help determine the potential for adopting this form of transportation tax in the future.   We'll be back in a moment   Break: Drake- Elon- GON   Story 7: brothers   Brothers Azeez and BJ Ojulari, who played football together at Marietta, are now both in the NFL. Azeez is entering his third season with the New York Giants, and BJ is preparing for his rookie season with the Arizona Cardinals. The siblings reflected on their time at Marietta and their achievements in college football. We continue to follow the cause of our Roman Achilles--more formally known as Lucius Siccius Dentatus--in 455 BCE. Dentatus is truly the star of the this period of history from the perspective of Dionysius of Halicarnassus and Dr G has a lot to say about that! Episode 106 - Spoiler Alert What can we glean from a history written long after the fact? Dr Rad takes us through some of the key concerns we face when approaching the written sources for the early republic. Part of the trouble steams simply from the time of the events when people like Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus lived centuries later. But we also run into the challenge of stock figures, whose names and existence are open to question. Such figures serve an important role in bringing a historical narrative to life. The complications of public discourse The traditionalist streak runs deeply through the patricians. This comes as no surprise as they are the beneficiaries of the structures already in place in Rome, but it does lead to some questionable behaviour. There's nothing quite like learning that there's a Roman Achilles! In this episode we get to meet the man behind the legend. Episode 105 - The Roman Achilles Before we jump in, let's find out where things stand. It's 455 BCE and our narrative sources have put forward the case that the opening up of the Aventine was an important step under the new collective of ten tribunes. But all is not well on the homefront of Rome. Things get off to a bad start when the consuls try to forcibly raise the levy. The tribunes step up to the plate in defence of the plebeians and we delve into what privileges and powers go along with the position. What we begin to see is the some of the complex workings of contested public space and the challenges of fighting for your rights with only a small crowd of citizens. As the crowd of disaffected plebeians swells in significance, the new consuls are faced with a dilemma - met with the crowd or remain in the safety of the senate... How does the tribunicianship operate? This seems to be a big looming question in our sources. There's a range of possible activities that an expanded collective can work towards. The capacity to be decisive, to operate on multiple fronts for common goals, to get passionate about taking strong action. It's intriguing to see how this potential is redirected under the influence of the patricians. Events to anticipate: The tribunes enter a meeting of the senateA big push for the law about the lawsA consular venture to Tusculum to save them from the AequiansA controversial decision about what to do with some of the spoils of warSome clear deviation between the narrative focus of Livy and Dionysius of HalicarnassusA speech from the 'Roman Achilles' including mention of the corona aurea Our Players The Consuls Titus Romilius T. f. In these two books, Cato and Cicero aggressively debate the merits of Stoicism and its conception of the Ultimate Good. The discussion takes place at Tusculum, Italy, a place that was extensively photographed by the translator in preparation of this work. When reading books III and IV, ask yourself what you think of the points raised by the disputants. How does Stoicism compare with Epicureanism, in your view?

Hello, this is Abel, speaking from Beijing, China. Welcome to my podcast. The Tale of Rome, Episode 37 — The Caudine Forks. During our last episode, we saw the end of many things. Many, many, things. The end of Publius Decius Mus, for he sacrificed himself on the battlefield. The end of Titus Manlius Torcuatus, in the books of Livy, for Livy banned him from his books, after the sacrifice of his own son. The end of the war against the Latins. The end of many peoples of Italy, such as the Sidicines, the Auruncians, the Volsci, and the Campanians, as free people. Yes, some lived on — under the strict yoke of Rome. It was also the end of the Latin League. And, yes — I was also the end of a respected Senator from Tusculum. Latin landowner and aristocrat Annius saw the end of his life, when he rolled down the stairs, at the very Roman Senate. We also saw the end of the Athenian resistance against King Philip II of Macedon, who just married yet another wife — a girl named Cleopatra of Macedon. I think, she was like, his sixth or seventh wife. And finally, I sadly announce that today we have yet another loss — this time from Ostia. In an event that happened all too often in Rome, and in cities built by Romans, the three-story insulae, where our good old slave lived, burst into flames, on a moonless night. Our slave had no time of getting down the stairs from his third floor, and while people were trying to get themselves to safety, a woman slipped on the stairs and — grabbing her husband, she dragged them both to their death. The fire devoured the entire block by the port of Ostia. […] Well, before the Romans entered the valley through the narrow pass, the Consuls sent troops ahead, to go see if something was amiss. The soldiers returned saying that everything seemed just fine, and that the valley was completely empty. But when the Roman troops began to march through the gorge, the Triarii, the most veteran soldiers, began to sense that something, was wrong indeed. It was just too calm, and they didn’t like it at all. And just when the last regiment of the Romans passed through the canyon, and just when the first part of the forces reached the exit of the canyon, they found it blocked with rocks and logs. Noticing they were trapped, they quickly began to walk back, but by then, the first entrance was blocked, too. Samnites were standing there, watching the Romans from above. […]
