In 2013, England's chief medical officer warned of a health "armageddon" as bacteria learn to overcome antibiotics and new drugs aren't available to counteract the situation. She said "antibiotics are losing their effectiveness at a ratte that is both alarming and irreversible, similar to global warming. TGhe apocalyptic scenario is that when I need a new hip in 20 years I'll die from a routine infection because we've run out of antibiotics." Ten years later the World Health Organization warns of AMR as a top 10 global public health threat. AMR is "antimicrobial resistance." It is the same issue Professor Sally Edwards warned about in England in 2013. Projections are that by 2050 AMR will cost Canada's healthcare system $7.6 billion. The British medical journal The Lancet showed that in 2019, 1.27 million deaths were already caused by AMR. Between 2010 and 2019, 18 novel antibiotics were introduced across 14 develope nations. Only 2 of these new antibiotics are available in Canada. Guest: Jason Tetro. Microbiologist. Author of: The Germ Guy & The Germ Code. I am one of those Canadians living in vehicle. It's brutal! It's tiring. And it's not cheap. In just 4 weeks of living in my vehicle I'm exhausted from lack of sleep, I'm sore, I'm hungry, I'm job hunting feverishly and I'm watching my credit score plummet as I can't keep up with minimum payments. My little 2012 Ford Escape doedsn't have a kitchen. I hope that despite your show's full roster, there's a way to shine a little light on the plight of us who have already fallen through the cracks." The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: In March 2021, Canada's premiers again took up the issue of federal health transfers by reiterating a demand made in late 2020 for a $28 billion increase in annual federal funding for health care. Their premise is simple. Once upon a time, the federal government contributed 50 per cent of the cost of medicare; now it contributes only 22 per cent. The provinces, it seems, are being generous by requesting that the feds need only raise their share to 35 per cent. Buried deep in a Trudeau government report released last month was a proposal to slap a new tax on pick-up trucks – by far the most popular vehicles in Canada. The recommendation attached to Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault's climate change report called for a tax of anywhere between $1,000 and $4,000. On today's episode of the Candice Malcolm Show, Candice is joined by the researcher who found this buried tax proposal and exposed it – Kris Sims of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF). Remarkably, after Sims broke the story, Guilbeault went on the attack and called her factual news report “disinformation” and “fake news.” This is the same minister who first drafted Bills C-10 and C-36 that seek to censor and ban so-called disinformation. The Trudeau government's loyal CBC stenographer Aaron Wherry was quick to repeat Guilbeault's talking points in an article that accuses Sims and the CTF of criticizing a “Truck Tax that doesn't exist.” Candice and Kris talk about the bizarre world of federal politics where Trudeau government officials deny facts that are published in their own reports, where journalists hold government critics – rather than government officials – to account, the growing cultural divide between the laptop class and the working class, and the brewing culture war over pick-up trucks. Long before federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault was leading the file in Canada's fight against the climate crisis, he was an activist — some might even say a radical one, most famous for scaling the CN tower in 2001 to bring attention to climate change. Now, he's the architect of the Liberals' latest plan to dramatically curb greenhouse gas emissions. It's Guilbeault's first big move in his new role, and it's getting a lot of attention — by those who think it goes too far, and those who think it doesn't go far enough. Today on Front Burner, we're talking to environmental writer Arno Kopecky about Guilbeault, the move from activist to politician and how his new climate plan measures up to expectations.
