Ted is joined this month by not one but two amazing guests, Jennifer Acker and Emily Everett. Jennifer is the founder and editor in chief of The Common, an award-winning print and digital literary journal based at Amherst College, and author of the novel The Limits of the World, which was one of three fiction honorees for the Massachusetts Book Award. Emily works with Jennifer as managing editor at The Common. She is also a Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow in Fiction and author of the novel All That Life Can Afford, the Reese's Book Club pick for April 2025. Considering the closest Ted has come to that latter honor is watching Big Little Lies, he starts the conversation by asking Emily what it was like to find out Reese had selected her book. (Spoiler: pretty freakin' exciting.) Emily then shares a little bit about All That Life Can Afford, a story with a main character whose idealized version of London doesn't quite track with her reality when she moves there after college. The role of the city proves to be a great segue to ask Jennifer about The Common, as it is a magazine devoted to deepening “our individual and collective sense of place.” Both Jennifer and Emily go on to talk about the relationship of their editorial work to their own writing, the difference in the writing challenge between novels and short stories (besides, you know, the length), how they've helped each other grow as writers, and the books they're working on now.Episode Links:Jennifer's WebsiteEmily's WebsiteThe CommonWorking Drafts episodes and info for requesting transcripts as well as more details about Ted and his books are available on his website, thetedfox.com.

On today's segment of Ask Us Anything with my co-host, Paul Hubbard we answer two common challenges faced by special education teachers: handling difficult parents and figuring out how often to progress monitor students. How do you deal with difficult parents?Jennifer and Paul both emphasize the importance of building strong relationships with parents and maintaining professionalism during tough conversations. Jennifer recommends practicing what you want to say ahead of time, paying attention to body language and tone, and ensuring that communication is consistent and clear to build trust before conflicts arise. Paul highlights the need to reflect on the energy you project, suggesting teachers categorize parents into Advocate, Behavioral, and Combative types, and use different strategies for each. He recommends involving Advocate Parents as valuable members of the IEP team by assigning them specific roles, helping to create a more collaborative relationship. How often should teachers progress monitor students? Both Jennifer and Paul agree that while daily data collection can be overwhelming, leaving progress monitoring until right before a report is due isn't effective either. They suggest finding a balance, such as weekly or bi-weekly data collection, depending on the student's needs. Paul explains how assigning different students to specific days for monitoring can help teachers stay consistent. They also recommend using digital tools like Google Forms to streamline data collection, especially with the help of paraprofessionals, ensuring that accurate data is readily available for IEP meetings and decisions.Highlights:Building strong relationships with parents and effectively navigating tough conversations when emotions run highBody language and preparation can significantly impact your communication with challenging parentsA breakdown of different types of difficult parentsHow involving parents in the IEP process can turn them into valuable alliesFinding a balance for your daily data collection to avoid last-minute data rushesStrategies for incorporating progress monitoring into your weekly routine to ensure more consistent and accurate data collection. How using Google Forms and paraprofessional support can streamline data collection for IEP meetings. If you found this episode helpful, subscribe, leave us a review, and keep sending in your questions. Resources Mentioned:Parent Communication Logs & ReportsSend in your questions for the next Ask Us AnythingWriting individual impact statements based on a student's unique disability and needs can be a big struggle AND a big time suck.! Laura's name has been all over social media after things went south on the season finale taping of the Real Housewives of New Jersey. It all started when Joe Gorga & his wife Melissa did not attend his sister Teresa Giudice's wedding. Sources close to production told us what led to that and it all started when Margaret and her former BFF Laura Lee Jansen had a fall out. Laura was upset with Margaret so she asked to meet up with Jennifer Aydin and Teresa Giudice. She let both of them know that Margaret isn't so innocent off camera. Laura revealed that Margaret told her that Melissa Gorga allegedly cheated on Joe Gorga by making out with a man named Nick Barotta. Margaret told her BFF Laura before they had a fall out. Both Jennifer and Teresa didn't believe the rumor but couldn't believe Margaret was saying this. Teresa and Louie then confronted Joe Gorga OFF CAMERA before the season began filming because they wanted to make him aware of it and nothing came out of it. Teresa never was going to bring it up on camera but she wanted Joe to know this is what Margaret had said." Our sources tell us that everyone was aware of this rumor and Melissa confronted Margaret prior to filming season 13 off camera. Melissa did not want this on camera but Jennifer ended up telling newbie Danielle and Danielle confronted Melissa on the season finale. Melissa blames Teresa on camera and her and Joe announce they won't be coming to the wedding. So was Teresa behind this rumor? GHIT 0313:  Track Day Recap from our HPDE Event with NASA Northeast at NJMP's Lightning Track Jennifer and Vicki had their first trip the track this year at the NASA Northeast HPDE event at NJMP's Lightning track.  Our event prep had a few issues with our Honda Civic inaugural shake down.  The issue is still TBD at this point.  Jennifer was in the HPDE 2 group and Vicki was in the HPDE3/4 group.  Bill was primarily concerned with instructing two students this weekend, both we on a track for their maiden voyage.  The weekend was a mix of highs and lows, many highs and really only one low.  We go over our weekend and how everyone progressed.  Both Jennifer and Vicki improved significantly over the winter off season, and we go into several of their accomplishments and the details.  The post race weekend hangover is real, and we all tried to stay focused and coherent with varied results, lol.  Our next event is later this month at Lime Rock Park and then our back-to-back racing weekends at PittRace with AER and then the 24 Hours of Lemons.  We also cover some of the trickier aspects of growing as a driver and some of the precautions to be aware of, especially if you have a significant improvement on your speed. In this episode Jennifer and I discuss the different aspects that Personal Year 7 is working through Lifepath 6 and Lifepath 7. The Lifepath is the stage that we are performing on to help us learn. The Personal Years 1-9 pushes the energy in a slightly different way bringing in different experiences. Does it match your core energy? Is it working with your challenge? Both Jennifer and I will be working with the 7 Personal Year energy throughout 2022. My Lifepath is a 6 which brings in family, friends, and responsibilities. The 7 energy is going to ask me to do some self-reflecting in regards to how much I do for everybody vs how much I do for myself. 7 is a problem solver so I suspect issue involving family will likely need to be addressed. I might be the one doing the research to help others better understand. Jennifer's Lifepath is a 7. Combining the 7 personal year and 7 Lifepath tells me that this year for her will really accentuate her desire to understand the mysteries of life in an even deeper way than the last few years. 7 Loves to read, be alone, daydream. All of these things helps her to connect to her higher self. I would suggest to Jennifer to be watching for that spiritual teacher. He/She might not be in the form that you are thinking they will appear. Practice meditation and watch the intuition grow. With the work that we both do, I anticipate our businesses will grow and we will work on many different levels, as this is helping as grow our spirituality in helping others. Some may be easy and some not so much. Learning in all forms will come in the Personal Year 7. What is your Lifepath and Personal Year?? How will it work in 2022. Lets look at the numbers together to determine the goal to be working on. Healing Numbers 22 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/healingnumbers22/message

In this episode of OutBüro Voices featuring LGBTQ professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders from around the world, host Dennis Velco chats with Jennifer Henius and Zander Keig founders of the LGBTQ Caregiver Center. Jennifer has a long history of working in the caregiving space at the national headquarters for the US Veterans Affairs where she was in a leadership role within the caregiver support program. In that role, she worked on public policy including LGBTQ policy and the caregiver education and training curriculum where she worked to integrate LGBTQ awareness and sensitivity into the training curriculum. She is a licensed clinical social worker and healthcare consultant. Zander and Jennifer initially met through LinkedIn and soon realized their common interests. As covered in our past interview with Zander, we discussed his past military experience, and his past work at the US Veterans Affairs as well. Both Jennifer and Zander are caregivers for family members who are also US Veterans. The LGBTQ Caregiver Center provides resources, education, and services to empower LGBTQ Caregivers and those who care for LGBTQ people to improve their health, mental health, and wellness. The LGBTQ Caregiver Center is founded and directed by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals, advocates and allies. Caregiving is a major public health concern that impacts more than 53 million adults in the USA. Caregiving is far more common among LGBTQ individuals than cisgender or heterosexual adults. Caregiving can be physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially exhausting. Maintaining your health and wellness is essential. Their mission is to raise awareness of the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ Caregivers and those who care for LGBTQ individuals, empower LGBTQ Caregivers to live with pride and dignity, and serve as a conduit for education, wellness, training, and research. The Center provides information and resources, delivers training and innovative services to enhance the health and wellness of LGBTQ Caregivers. Learn more at https://lgbtqcaregivers.org/ Jennifer shares that past studies have not been inclusive yet recently organizations that conduct studies have realized the need to be fully inclusive and are now taking great measures to include the LGBTQ community. Further, advisory board members of the LGBTQ Caregiver Center are medical doctors who are experts on LGBTQ healthcare disparity. We chat about some of the unique needs of LGBTQ caregivers such as having to be a caregiver for a loved one that does not accept them for who they are. Zander shared his personal situation of caregiving for his father who has dementia and as a transgender person having to share his personal information with personnel at the assisted living facility in case his father starts to inquire about his daughter. Jennifer shares how many LGBTQ seniors who need assistance in-home or at care centers often return to the closet out of fear of discrimination, harassment, and the potential of care refusal. We discussed the need for LGBTQ training and certification for those organizations. On today's episode, we sit down with Jennifer and LJ, the founders and owners of 3 Moms Organics, which carries a product we love, TickWise. TickWise is an organic, DEET-free, family safe, insect repellent, that also repels ticks, among many other bugs! Their product is EPA compliant, and is registered in all 50 states in the US. It is sold in over 300 stores and that number is increasing every day. It is also sold on Amazon.com, Walmart.com, and Lowes.com. Furthermore, 3 Moms Organics was recently certified as a prestigious Women-Owned Small Business. Both Jennifer and LJ have lived in the Hamptons of New York for all their adult life. They have both raised families in East Hampton and learned early on the dangers of ticks, and the diseases they carry. LJ's children have each been infected with tick-borne diseases multiple times, as have Jennifer's. The tick problem has gotten so bad in East Hampton that you cannot even step onto your lawn without finding at least one crawling up your leg.     LJ shares her story of having Neurological Lyme Disease [Neurological Lyme Disease requires a Deet-Free product]. We learn how LJ's tick knowledge, paired with Jennifer's essential oil knowledge, sent them down the path to protect their children from ticks (and now, thankfully, many other people)!       All the Tick Safety Tips:  Spray Permethrin on your shoes (spray it outside, and let it dry before wearing; repeat every 2 weeks)  Spray yourself (with TickWise)  Spray your belongings, including your backpack  For babies, do not spray hands or face, but you can spray their clothes, their carrier, their stroller, etc.   Wear light-coloured clothing, so you can easily spot ticks  Tuck your pants into your tall socks  Wear clothes that cover your skin  Avoid walking in long grass; although, ticks can also be found in short grass, depending location, and closer to trail where they are looking to feed  Use a lint roller (or duct tape) right after adventuring, to take off any ticks that are hanging on clothing  At home, strip down, and put your clothing in the dryer on high heat for 1 hour (ticks do not like high heat)  Shower and do a thorough tick check, especially warm areas of your body, and your hair  Be cognisant of anything that is itchy once inside – look before you scratch!      If You Find a Tick:  If you find a tick around your house, get rid of it  If a tick is found on you, remove it immediately with needle-nose tweezers, or a tick twister (remove it slowly, and make sure all of the tick is removed)  If the tick has bitten you, put it in a bottle or a plastic bag to send in for testing (do not put it in tape) – check www.tickreport.com  If a tick has bitten you, do the full 28-days of antibiotics (as that brackets the life cycle of the bacteria) – testing for Lyme disease in people is very flawed. The CDC says that just because you test negative, does not mean you don't have Lyme disease. Testing is only 30% positive  **Don't do the “soap on a cotton ball trick” to remove a tick, because it could leave some of the tick behind, or the tick could regurgitate their stomach contents      Facts about Ticks that will Scare You (Sorry!)  They can sense when someone has walked in the last 5 hours  There is a type of tick that can reproduce without a male  Mice, rabbits, deer, squirrels carry them around  Possums eat ticks       TickWise Spray Info:  It's been field tested for its efficacy   It's registered in all 50 states in the US  It lasts for 2 hours for ticks, and 1.75 hours for mosquitos; then it must be re-applied  It is also good for dogs, but not cats.    **If you're trying to keep ticks away from the yard, it's best to set up tick boxes, because if you spray the yard, it negatively impacts other animals**      Follow:  Website: https://www.3momsorganics.com  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/3momsorganics/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/3momsorganics/    Shop at:  Website: https://www.3momsorganics.com  Amazon: www.amazon.com/  Walmart: www.walmart.com/  Lowes: www.lowes.com/    Thank you to Rumpl for supporting today's episode! Jennifer and James have a very unique family, they have 10 children! 6 of them have been adopted and 4 or those adopted have disabilities.  They each have brought love and joy into their family.   Internationally Adopted Children with Special Needs The Unexpected Jennifer and James went to Kazakhstan to adopt their daughter.  They were unaware at the time that she has autism and other medical issues as a result of living in an orphanage.  Jennifer recalled “She ended up with Reye syndrome and came home with severe liver problems and cognitive disabilities..they did some testing and told me that she had severe autism” Both Jennifer and James were crushed by the diagnosis. However, she has exceeded expectations and is on the honor roll as a freshman in high school.  “As soon as I think we’re going to hit a ceiling, she breaks through it.” Jennifer added. Adding More After struggling with miscarriages for a few years Jennifer knew it was time to adopt and add another to their family.  Some countries have restrictions on allowing typically developing children to be adopted if there are other children in the home.  This led Jennifer and James to start adopting more children with disabilities. The moment Jennifer saw Jacob, she knew he was supposed to be in their family.  “I recognized him, I knew it was him and he had Trisomy 21, Down syndrome.” Jennifer said. Children with Special Needs have Special Abilities to Love James says children with disabilities have a unique gift to love. The amount of happiness felt not only by his wife and him, but also their other kids, has dramatically increased since they’ve adopted children with disabilities. “The light and joy that they bring us is immense,” James said, “and this is true with each one of our children. They have their own unique traits and their own unique abilities. But with those things that the world would call special needs, they come as a total package, and with those special needs have come special abilities, and that’s not just lip service. Truly special abilities that have blessed our lives more than I can begin to say.” Jennifer said, these children with special needs know what’s most important in life and really understand happiness. They naturally have many talents and capabilities that do not come so easily to others. This family knows to truly love, care for, and raise children with special abilities means to be blessed to be in the presence of angels. The Impact of Having Children with Special Needs Jennifer and James both agree that their children who have special needs have had a profound impact their immediate family as well as their extended family.  Jennifer said “they all have a very special connection with all of our children, but particularly the ones with Down syndrome..my brother was the one who said to me..‘I think that their chromosome (the extra one) is the love chromosome.’  “It’s been fun to see that they’ve not only impacted up in our immediate family but in our extended family and our community.” added Jennifer Questions when Adopting Children with Special Needs Parents who want to adopt but aren’t sure, James encourages them to look deeper. Of course the cost of adoption is high—especially from a foreign country—is expensive, but adopting a child is infinitely more valuable than any material possession anyone would spend the same amount of money on. Jennifer says she knows every child has a forever family whether it’s their own or an adoptive family.

Debra Asberry is the owner of Women Traveling Together, a company built on her own personal frustration when she could not find a travel partner to do a once-in-a-lifetime trip with her. Women Traveling Together cultivates an environment where solo women can experience new things without a travel buddy, in a safe and secure way. The company was started in 1997, and has created an experience where even the most inexperienced traveller can have a fun time without feeling pressured to keep up with the pros.   Key Takeaways: *What is Women Traveling Together about, and how did it get started? *Debra and Women Traveling Together will be hosting around 70 tours throughout 2017. *The company started because no one wanted to travel with Debra on a rafting trip 20 years ago. *Debra knew she couldn’t have been the only one who felt this way. She wanted to share her experiences with someone. *The mainstream tour operators, at the time, did not want anything to do with solo travellers. *You can talk to the other women in the group before your trip to get a better feel for what they are and aren’t comfortable with while traveling. This makes the group activity great for both experienced and inexperienced travelers. *How does Debra work with introverts and the lone wolves? *Some people have strict definitions of what solo travel is. Both Jennifer and Debra do a bit of debunking! *You can be as alone as you want to be on any of these trips! It’s just up to you how you want to spend that time. *Jennifer loves what Debra is doing because women who are going through a midlife transition are able to rediscover themselves and redefine their stories in a safe way. *What are some of the qualities Debra looks for in a tour leader? *Debra has 12 employees on staff and 29 tour leaders that are on the front line and who ensure that the tour runs smoothly. *What’s next for Debra and her company? *A company like Debra’s makes it so easy for you to get up and go, and live life on your own terms.   Mentioned in This Episode: Transformviatravel.com Transform via Travel on Facebook @GoSoloLive on Twitter Email: Jennifer@TransformviaTravel.com   Connect with Debra: Website Call Debra: 1-800-795-7135   Leave a Review: Did you like this episode?
