Millennials Are Killing Capitalism
Lebanon's Split Condition of Grief Under Domination with Wassila Abboud

Millennials Are Killing Capitalism

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 11, 2026 41:10

In this episode we are joined by Wassila Abboud to discuss her essay, "The Dining Table and the Drone." Our conversation begins with her meditations on grief in Lebanon. We explore how people often name today's grief through the language of past griefs — and what this transference between past and present reveals about the psyche under domination. From there, we turn to Walter Benjamin's "angel of history" and why Abboud argues this analogy fails to capture Lebanon's relationship to catastrophe. We discuss why so many returns cluster around 1982, how that year fractured grief itself, reshaping collective memory, political imagination, and the vocabulary of resistance. We examine the paradoxical meaning of ceasefire, the choreography of repeated displacement, and the temporal logic of domination that ensures catastrophe is always waiting just beyond its declaration. Our conversation also situates Lebanon's grief in relation to Gaza's present devastation, asking what it reveals about the impossibility of stability in a regional order sustained by capital accumulation and the extraction of life. We trace the sequence of events between 1978 and 1982 — from Operation Litani to the Camp David Accords and Israel's full-scale invasion of Beirut — not simply as military maneuvers but as the crystallization of a regional order that fractured Lebanon's political landscape and redefined resistance. Wassila Abboud is a cultural worker and writer researching between Beirut and Amsterdam. Her work engages with critical theory, philosophy, and culture and takes on both a speculative and materialist approach, examining the conditions of past and present historical struggles. Two years ago, It's a Mindset began at my dining table with a microphone, a big dream, and a deep belief that conversations could change lives. Now, this little podcast sits proudly in the Top 5 % of shows worldwide - and I'm beyond grateful. In this special anniversary episode, I'm reflecting on the biggest mindset shifts and lessons that have shaped both me and this growing community. From the guests who've shared their wisdom to the listeners who've written saying an episode changed their outlook - it's been a journey of growth, gratitude, and so much magic. In this episode I share: Why mindset changes everything - and how these conversations have transformed my coaching work. Why worth always comes before wealth, and how Worthy & Wealthy grew from that belief. Why midlife is a rebirth, not a crisis, and how reinvention keeps us alive. How connection is currency; the real magic behind meaningful conversations. And how consistency breeds confidence; showing up, even when it's hard. And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? According to Nicola Mason, the hardest thing in growing a small business is making sure you don't damage family relationships along the way—especially in a family-run business. Balancing intense work demands with family harmony takes real intention. What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Nicola Mason shares that The E-Myth was one of the first business books that truly helped her, alongside Brene Brown's work on vulnerability and leadership, and she recently found Hanging by a Thread by Erin Dearing particularly relevant. Are there any great podcasts or online learning resources you'd recommend to help grow a small business? According to Nicola Mason, some of the best resources to help grow a small business include the Grow a Small Business Podcast, Diary of a CEO, Huberman Lab, and anything by Brene Brown. She finds these not only practical but also inspiring for both business strategy and personal development. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Nicola Mason believes the best “tool” for growing a small business isn't software or tech, but the qualities of passion and resilience—showing up every day, even when it's tough. What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Nicola Mason would tell herself on day one to keep going, hold onto the dream, trust the vision, and know that despite the setbacks, it truly will work out in the end. Dear Wonderful Readers,The following vignette is what we call a “raw write.” I wrote it in 40 minutes in my writing class called UnMute, led by my incredible writing teacher, ANN RANDOLPH. I've been attending Ann's classes for the last three and a half years, and working with her has been a huge part of my creative journey. She'll be starting up UnMute again in the fall for any of you who have a lot of stories bubbling away inside of you but are unsure of where to start. I highly recommend her class.Today's prompt was the poem “What The Living Do” by Marie Howe, and I took the question: “Write about something broken in your home—something small and stupid. Let the description grow. What bigger thing does it mirror or hold? What grief or yearning lives inside that broken faucet, that squeaky hinge?”Also, I've got an exciting and quick Misseducated update. Starting this week, I will be experimenting with posting my work on Tuesdays. I've tended to publish too late on Friday evening, and I hope that publishing earlier in the week will give me more opportunities to share my work on social while it's still fresh. Still, I am eternally grateful to all my regular Friday readers, and I will keep you in the loop as to how it goes! You can expect posts from me on Tuesday from now on.I hope you enjoy this piece and have a great weekend.Love,Tash

We are back to break down a bracket challenge featuring some of the most popular, iconic, and flavorful dining locations across the parks, resorts, and Disney Springs to find out which restaurant will be crowned the ultimate champion. This culinary showdown spans four themed regions: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios & Animal Kingdom, and Resorts & Disney Springs. Each division is stacked with beloved restaurants, from character dining favorites to signature fine dining experiences. Matchups are judged across five key categories that define what makes a dining experience truly magical at Walt Disney World: food quality and flavor, theming and atmosphere, value for the price, service and overall experience, and popularity among guests. We discuss each restaurant head-to-head, diving into what sets them apart—from unique menus and immersive design to guest satisfaction and whether the overall experience justifies the cost. As always, we bring our personal experiences, insights, and a few fun stories along the way, making each matchup a tough and entertaining call. Will a high-end signature restaurant win it all, or will a fan-favorite character meal pull off the upset? Can nostalgia or theming outshine culinary innovation? And which restaurant has the broadest appeal to guests of all ages and tastes? It's a bracket built for foodies, Disney fans, and anyone who loves talking about great meals and magical memories.Tune in and play along as we narrow the field of 32 down to one ultimate table service champion. During this episode, we're going to answer that question. On the Dining Table this week, hear his conversation with Hannah Tillett-Banaszak and Mike Banaszak of the popular Tilly Bagel Shop in the South Loop on the rise of the Chicago-style bagel, as well as their plans for the future.

There is nothing worse than politics dividing family.   I have seen people develop distaste for their dearest and closest because of being on opposite sides of the political divide.   Something which is (mere) belief, takes on an expanded definition to include a commentary on character, and acts as an unsubstantiated and unsavoury revelation. And with astonishment we exclaim “What! You support —-?” As if it was the ultimate excretion and misdemeanour.   In the city I stay in, everybody is a political guru. Some emotionally, and some after study and observation. And it often becomes a battle of belief vs intellect. And conversations and emotions go haywire. And become deeply divisive.   And being a highly political nation, where as a people we consume (and practice) politics with gusto, finding someone close being not even close to our political beliefs is dismaying - and often unacceptable. How, then, can a conversation not be a battle? How can we not conclude that the other is at best insensitive or at worst a cretin (kreet n)? The hypocrisies are inherent in the premise. All dining table discussion on politics are nothing more than air. We criticise with the depth of our beings, lean left whilst having expensive wine, talk of one god whilst deeply suspicious of another's religion. How much do our politics - and religion - diminish us, how it makes our worst define us, how much something which is nothing more than a reaction to headlines makes us be judgemental of the ones closest to us.   In a life which is so short, and so completely beautiful, we deliberately lean into what we think defines us, when at best it is an amorphous state - changing as we understand more, read more, feel more, see more.We bring tragedy merely  because we give importance to the transient.   If you liked this poem, consider listening to these other poems which talk of how politics adn religion determine our lives -  In Search of a God Mr Hoskote, have you visited Kashmir recently?
