Alton Brown, one of the Food Network's most prolific stars, says the best thing about the 1980s was living in Chicago. As the former host of "Good Eats," Brown has plenty say about the evolution of food television. In this episode, Dining Table host David Manilow digs into Brown's favorite Chicago places and his dining pet peeves. Plus, you'll hear about his culinary variety show "Alton Brown Live: Last Bite," which makes a tour stop in Chicago this weekend. Brown also discusses his new book of 39 essays and how it was inspired by a passion he shares with actor Tom Hanks.
It's March Madness season, and the tournament fun continues on this episode of the Main Street Magic Podcast—but this time, we're heading into the delicious world of table service dining at Walt Disney World. We are back to break down a bracket challenge featuring some of the most popular, iconic, and flavorful dining locations across the parks, resorts, and Disney Springs to find out which restaurant will be crowned the ultimate champion. This culinary showdown spans four themed regions: Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios & Animal Kingdom, and Resorts & Disney Springs. Each division is stacked with beloved restaurants, from character dining favorites to signature fine dining experiences. As always, we bring our personal experiences, insights, and a few fun stories along the way, making each matchup a tough and entertaining call. Will a high-end signature restaurant win it all, or will a fan-favorite character meal pull off the upset? Can nostalgia or theming outshine culinary innovation? And which restaurant has the broadest appeal to guests of all ages and tastes? The Watch is growing, and they'll let anyone in nowadays. As a born and raised Chicagoan, David Manilow likes almost all kinds of Chicago food — but the one thing he never gets here is a bagel. Manilow eats them in New York, but why not Chicago? During this episode, we're going to answer that question. On the Dining Table this week, hear his conversation with Hannah Tillett-Banaszak and Mike Banaszak of the popular Tilly Bagel Shop in the South Loop on the rise of the Chicago-style bagel, as well as their plans for the future.

An interesting story with good riffing on popular ancient history, but doesn't feel like Pratchett is railing against anything. Billy Dilley, do you want to hurt us that much?
There is nothing worse than politics dividing family. I have seen people develop distaste for their dearest and closest because of being on opposite sides of the political divide. Something which is (mere) belief, takes on an expanded definition to include a commentary on character, and acts as an unsubstantiated and unsavoury revelation. And with astonishment we exclaim “What! You support —-?” As if it was the ultimate excretion and misdemeanour. In the city I stay in, everybody is a political guru. Some emotionally, and some after study and observation. And it often becomes a battle of belief vs intellect. And conversations and emotions go haywire. And become deeply divisive. And being a highly political nation, where as a people we consume (and practice) politics with gusto, finding someone close being not even close to our political beliefs is dismaying - and often unacceptable. How, then, can a conversation not be a battle? How can we not conclude that the other is at best insensitive or at worst a cretin (kreet n)? The hypocrisies are inherent in the premise. All dining table discussion on politics are nothing more than air. We criticise with the depth of our beings, lean left whilst having expensive wine, talk of one god whilst deeply suspicious of another's religion. How much do our politics - and religion - diminish us, how it makes our worst define us, how much something which is nothing more than a reaction to headlines makes us be judgemental of the ones closest to us. In a life which is so short, and so completely beautiful, we deliberately lean into what we think defines us, when at best it is an amorphous state - changing as we understand more, read more, feel more, see more.We bring tragedy merely because we give importance to the transient. If you liked this poem, consider listening to these other poems which talk of how politics adn religion determine our lives - In Search of a God Mr Hoskote, have you visited Kashmir recently? The origins of dining tables, communal table arrangements and some stats about how many people eat at a dining room table. Paul responds by canceling their love-feast, and calling the entire group to self-examination before they dare to eat again.

In today's interview we're talking to Clare Spelta from Bon Maxie who very generously shares her amazing business journey. There are not many businesses that can manage to scale a multi-million dollar business from one handmade product which is why I'm so super impressed with the journey that Clare has taken in her business. With every business, I really believe it is the mindset of the business owner that determines how big a brand can go and Bon Maxie is certainly an example of this. “Sometimes you have to go through the motions until the right opportunity presents itself” Clare Spelta Today Clare shares some amazing insights into her own journey that I believe many of my listeners can adapt to scale their business: The origin story of Bon Maxie and the clear defining mission she has for her brand How she overcome the challenges of going from one customised and handmade product to manufacturing for growth What strategies she's employed to scale her business and where she priorities her time and skills The importance of the customer community for the Bon Maxie brand How she and her husband manage running a business and a family together. Listen as Clare shares the amazing growth of much-loved brand, Bon Maxie. For the full show notes visit our podcast page at https://www.catherinelangman.com/episode-128/

Meals in American households are woven into the cultural fabric of everyday life: They serve as a unifying experience shared by most, if not all, consumers. As we approach nearly two years of a pandemic, how do Americans think about and approach meals and cooking today? In this podcast, find out as our analysts provide chapter-by-chapter highlights from our new report, At the Dining Table: American Meals and Cooking. Trends discussed include planning, procuring, and preparation of meals, archetypes of food-engaged consumers, changes in daypart meal occasions (breakfast, lunch, dinner), and in-depth analysis of how we cook today, ranging from purchase and use of appliances to scratch cooking (and the “ideal meal”), ingredients, and sources used. Two tidbits from the podcast: "55% of consumers say that they love or like cooking, but just as many hate having to clean up afterwards" and "fully 20% of all consumers have got an air fryer since March, 2020." Have a listen to learn more about how Americans approach the institution of meals today and what business opportunities exist for the food industry to meet the changing needs of consumers. Download an overview of the At the Dining Table here.
