[DONATE] In this episode of The Collective US, hosts Erica Austin and Ryan Buck explore food insecurity in Northwest Michigan with guests from the Northwest Food Coalition and Meals on Wheels. Rachael Cougler explains how the coalition—made up of over 70 grassroots organizations—partners with groups like Groundwork Center and Food Rescue to deliver fresh, local food to those in need. Mary Clulo shares her journey from volunteer to coalition chair, emphasizing the importance of nutrition and the complexity of organizing food systems across six counties. Lisa Robitshek of Meals on Wheels highlights how their service not only provides meals to homebound seniors but also offers vital wellness checks and emotional support. The episode underscores how economic challenges like inflation, housing shortages, and lack of childcare intensify food insecurity, and how community volunteers and donors play a crucial role in filling the gap. Listeners are encouraged to support upcoming fundraisers—Moomers for Meals on April 27 and the Empty Bowls event on May 4—to help sustain these essential services. Brought To You By The Trusted Sons- America's Handyman Company 209-269-2727 Mike Mallory, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties (SHFB) located in Manteca, will tell you “it takes an army to accomplish their mission”, and it does. Fighting Hunger-Feeding Hope! It is a daily challenge accomplished by a committed and dedicated group of stakeholders led by Mike. He will tell you “others make it happen”. Others will tell you “Mike makes it happen”. The reality is with Mike's guidance and leadership, and with the dedication of staff and the commitment of community-minded individuals, together, they accomplish this monumental feat every day.
Mike began as a member of the Board of Directors in 1998. Mike was invited to become the new CEO in 2008. At this time the economy was experiencing significant challenges, and the food bank was faced with equally significant organizational and operational issues.
Mike's leadership led to a restructuring of the board and increased the effectiveness of the food bank. The food bank has grown to include many additional communities including Merced and the Mother Lode that rely on the food bank for food. There is a collaboration of over 100 non-profit agencies that distribute over 15.8 million pounds of food to food pantries and after-school programs serving 365,000 adults, seniors and children that suffer from food insecurity.
Current programs that have expanded or were created under his leadership include: Food 4 Thought, Senior Brown Bag, Mobile Fresh, Green Bag (Go Green for Seniors), Chef Program, Farm to Family and events such as The Chili Cook-Off, Hit the Streets for Hunger, Empty Bowls and Turkeys R Us.
Mike has become the face of Second Harvest Food Bank, but his service continues by being involved and serving on the Wells Fargo Advisory Board, California Food Bank Association, Mountain Valley Express Board and Stanislaus County Healthy Aging Association. Because of his involvement, he has been able to expose the food bank and garner additional support and resources that extend the impact of the agency. Mike and the staff at SHFB are tireless and innovative, working every day to eliminate hunger.
Mike attended and graduated from Sacramento City College in 1975 and Cal Poly-Pomona in 1977. He is married to his best friend Suzanne and is a proud father and grandpa

Troy's Empty Bowls is a fantastically crowded event that has been held at the Italian American Community Center for years, bringing together artists, chefs, and communities to help raise money for local food programs. The COVID-19 pandemic almost caused the cancellation of this annual event along with so many others. But volunteers with the Collar City Clay Guild worked with the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market to make it happen again this year -- safely. Potters are busy handthrowing and handbuilding bowls the 15th Annual Empty Bowls, which will be held at the Farmer's Market over three weekends starting this coming Saturday, October 3, and then again on October 10 and 17 from 8:30am -2pm. HMM correspondent Corinne Carey spoke with co-chairs of the event, Beth Joslin and Stephanie Wojtowicz about what the event will look like this year.

The Geminati jump in and talk about magick. Ginger and Kat share their different paths and approaches. Ginger is in Witch Skewl this year and is interested in a path of initiation to deepen her knowledge. Kat's resistance to a deep dive in magick is due to spiritual studies and dabbling in divination. She's wary of "religion," but seeing where her curiosity leads. Ginger has been on a conscious magickal path for much longer than Kat, and she confesses (ha!) her love for Catholic ritual and ceremony. The Gems talk about the downside of religion turning people into sheep, where they turn off and regurgitate rather than continually question and grow. Ultimately the Gems discuss doing good things in community to bolster rather than segregate it. What does this look like? How do you do good? There are so many ways including volunteerism and one on one connections. It often comes down to drilling into you and doing deeper work. In magick they suggest getting your ritual to tap into deeper currents to discover what's really important to you. Do the work to open yourself to new channels of information to come through and undo programming, then step outside yourself and help someone at least once a week! However it shows up or any way you can. You'll be surprised how this feeds you and deepens your sense of community and connection in the world at large.
