In this episode of Valley of Depth, we sit down with David Tearse, co-founder and CEO of Karman Industries, to explore a piece of the AI boom that rarely gets attention: thermal infrastructure. As hyperscale data centers grow into multi-gigawatt “AI factories,” the limiting factor is no longer just chips or capital — it's how efficiently we can move and reject heat. David explains how Karman's Heat Processing Unit (HPU) reimagines cooling from first principles, bringing aerospace-grade turbomachinery and modern power electronics to a decidedly unglamorous but critical layer of the AI stack. The conversation moves from the physics of heat to the politics of data centers, and ultimately to why thermal efficiency may become a quiet national security advantage. We discuss:Why thermal management—not chips—may be the next bottleneck in the AI stackHow Karman's HPU replaces traditional chillers and dry coolers outside the data centerHow much additional compute Karman can unlock from the same power inputWhy CO₂ refrigerant de-risks data center builds from a regulatory standpointHow Karman thinks about reliability, uptime, and “aerospace-style” engineeringWhy data centers are becoming a national security issueWhere Karman could expand beyond data centers—nuclear, geothermal, and beyond…and much more.• Chapters •00:00 – Intro00:51 – Elara Nova ad01:21 – Karman Industries mascot02:28 – How would David describe himself?05:01 – The original insight that became Karman Industries06:31 – What do people underestimate about thermal management?07:26 – The story behind the name08:21 – How David and co-founder CJ Karla ended up working together11:15 – Why is now the right time to be solving thermal management?15:13 – Where does the heat go today?16:31 – Energy usage for compute vs cooling17:32 – Energy Savings with Karman's heat processing units (HPUs)18:05 – Why C02?20:48 – Replacing vs integration21:37 – Regulatory side24:42 – Karman's customer pipeline26:33 – Reliability28:59 – Engineering challenges30:39 – What comes next for Karman31:55 – Is thermal management a national security issue?33:21 – David's thoughts on rerouting heat36:23 – HPUs in space37:58 – The company culture that allows for building relaiable solutions quickly44:35 – Milestones for Karman in the next couple of years47:00 – What does David do for fun? • Show notes •Karman's website —https://www.karmanindustries.com/David's socials — https://x.com/7earseMo's socials — https://x.com/itsmoislamPayload's socials — https://twitter.com/payloadspace / https://www.linkedin.com/company/payloadspaceIgnition's socials — https://twitter.com/ignitionnuclear / https://www.linkedin.com/company/ignition-nuclear/Tectonic's socials — https://twitter.com/tectonicdefense / https://www.linkedin.com/company/tectonicdefense/Valley of Depth archive — Listen: https://pod.payloadspace.com/ • About us •Valley of Depth is a podcast about the technologies that matter — and the people building them. Modern energy regulations and rising utility costs are reshaping commercial real estate. In this episode, veteran green-building contractor Robert Pulitzer of Green Street Global explains how owners can tap hidden operational savings, fund deep retrofits with zero out-of-pocket capital, and future-proof assets against tightening decarbonization rules. In This Episode You'll Learn: Where the Money Hides: How utility-bill audits uncover 10-20 % in overcharges and fund the first wave of improvements. The Retrofit Roadmap: Start with the building envelope, then right-size HVAC, lighting, and water systems for 20-40 % lower consumption. Financing That Pays for Itself: Using C-PACE, equipment financing, and shared-savings models to cover 100 % of soft and hard costs. Best-Fit Property Types: Hotels, senior housing, hospitals, industrial facilities, private schools—and any owner-occupied building with high OPEX. Value-Add for the 21st Century: Why lower carbon emissions translate directly into higher NOI, higher valuations, and lower regulatory risk. AI as a Force Multiplier: The everyday tools Robert uses to draft proposals, LOIs, and even legal responses at lightning speed. Key Takeaways: Treat energy efficiency as a profit center, not an expense. A holistic approach—tight envelope → right-sized HVAC → efficient fixtures—delivers the biggest ROI. Shared-savings contracts and tax strategies eliminate upfront capital barriers. Decarbonization mandates are accelerating worldwide; acting now preserves asset value and competitive edge. How do you keep a building comfortable without wasting energy? A Penn State team is tackling that question with an innovative smart window. Using a responsive polymer, the window can block visible light, infrared heat, or both—automatically, without sensors or electricity. The technology could dramatically reduce energy use in buildings while giving architects new freedom to design spaces that work with, rather than against, the sun.
Two new initiatives from the DesignLights Consortium (DLC) are poised to help building owners, managers, and other building stakeholders specify lighting that will stand the test of time. Stuart Berjansky, DLC's technical director, joins the Buildings Podcast to walk us through these initiatives.

“AI is causing such a strain on the energy grid that CSPs need every tool they can to keep costs and compliance in check,” says Adrian Barcia, Product Marketing Specialist at iconectiv. In a conversation with Doug Green, Publisher of Technology Reseller News, Barcia explained how iconectiv's Common Language codes—CLI (equipment-level) and SILI (site-level)—help communication service providers (CSPs) and data center operators achieve energy efficiency while strengthening compliance and operational planning. Barcia outlined how CLI codes provide critical details such as power requirements, heat output, and environmental tolerances, enabling CSPs to select energy-efficient equipment and configure networks more effectively. On the location side, SILI codes give operators precise functional context to optimize site selection, network planning, and service delivery, reducing over-engineering and energy waste. With AI workloads driving unprecedented computing demand, energy efficiency has become a top-tier strategic cost for CSPs. Barcia emphasized that using iconectiv's Common Language can cut energy costs by up to 1% annually—equating to $2.4–$12 million in savings for a medium-sized wireless network or data center. Beyond savings, Common Language also helps operators prepare for stricter energy regulations while maintaining service quality. “Now is a prime opportunity for CSPs to gain detailed insights into their network assets,” Barcia noted. “We're ready to partner with providers to unlock savings, compliance, and smarter network growth.” To learn more, visit https://iconectiv.com/.

With the recent passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, also known as the Big Beautiful Bill, significant changes are coming to both solar panel and electric vehicle tax credits. I break down what these changes mean, how they can affect your savings, and what steps you might want to take before these credits disappear. From figuring out if solar panels make sense for your home to understanding how electric vehicle credits work (and when they're expiring), this episode is packed with actionable insights and tips, especially for those planning for retirement or looking to cut down on monthly expenses. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... [01:31] Residential solar panels are popular for reducing electric bills, offering significant savings, especially for retirees. [05:23] Solar tax credits are expiring soon. [09:07] Solar investments offset electric costs and protect against future rate hikes, beneficial long term. [11:28] Costs and break-even of electric cars. [13:08] Act now if you want to take advantage of solar tax credits. The Solar Panel Tax Credit is a Fading Opportunity One of the biggest draws for homeowners considering solar panels has been the significant federal tax credit, currently set at 30% of the total installation cost. This credit has made solar an appealing investment for many, offering a direct dollar-for-dollar reduction in the taxes owed. In high-cost electricity states like Connecticut, this can mean hundreds of dollars in monthly savings on your utility bill. However, the Big Beautiful Bill brings an unfortunate change: the solar tax credit is set to disappear at the end of this year. That means if you've been thinking about going solar, now is the time to act. If you don't install solar panels before the deadline could add years to your payback period, undermining the investment's attractiveness and putting it out of reach for many. Energy Savings of Battery Storage and EVs While solar panels are great for energy savings, adding a battery storage system further enhances their benefits. A battery can store excess solar power for use during peak times or outages, which is particularly helpful for retirees planning to stay in their homes for decades and looking to insulate themselves from rising electricity rates. Electric vehicles (EVs) also offer savings for households with high transportation costs. The federal EV tax credit, worth up to $7,500 on new cars and up to $4,000 for used EVs, has also been a strong motivator for those considering a switch from gas-powered vehicles. The Big Beautiful Bill also changes the EV tax credit, which will disappear even sooner than the solar incentive. Although there are several important limitations: only vehicles assembled in North America qualify, and there's a cap on purchase price ($55,000 for sedans, $80,000 for SUVs). Income limitations apply as well; single filers must earn less than $150,000 ($300,000 for married couples) to claim the new vehicle credit. The used EV credit comes with lower income caps ($75,000 for singles, $150,000 for couples) and is worth up to $4,000. Should You Act Now? Before making any big investment, think about the following: Timing: Both solar and EV credits will soon vanish. If you want the tax break, don't wait. Financial Health: The best return comes from paying cash, not financing or tapping retirement accounts. Long-term Plans: Solar and EV investments make the most sense if you plan to stay in your home and keep your vehicle for years to come. Manufacturers may eventually lower prices as credits disappear, but there are no guarantees. With energy incentives set to change dramatically, the window to maximize savings is closing fast. For homeowners and future retirees, the time to act is now, whether that means installing solar, purchasing an EV, or both. Consult with a financial advisor to consider how these decisions fit into your overall retirement and financial readiness strategy. The Treasury Department's official list of eligible vehicles shows that the cars, trucks, minivans, and SUVs listed below qualify for a full $7,500 tax credit if placed in service between January 1 and September 30 of 2025. In some cases, only certain trim levels or model years qualify. More vehicles may be added to or removed from this list as manufacturers continue to submit information on whether their vehicles are eligible. In today's episode, I'm sharing a simple yet powerful transition technique that can help you regain student attention without raising your voice or using unnecessary energy.Transitions can be one of the trickiest parts of classroom management. Picture this: students are engaged in a group task, there's movement, chatter, and productive chaos, but now you need to bring them back to whole-class instruction. Rather than calling for attention repeatedly, try this:Play transition music—a predetermined song that signals to students it's time to shift back.Project your laptop screen onto the board and type your instructions in big, bold font for students to follow. This method is non-verbal, calm, direct, and engaging. It saves your voice, adds a bit of novelty, and helps students smoothly transition without unnecessary disruption. Listen in for tips on making this work effectively in your classroom.Have a question, comment, or just want to say hello?
