Ann's personal slogan and the cornerstone of all her programs is, “Liberate Your Rebel Spirit & Rake In The Revenue.”     Here's what we covered on the episode:   Ann's Start in Design When Ann Bennett started in design, they would cut out letters, paste them together, and take a picture for layouts.  How Ann learned all she knows about design "on the street" through doing hands-on work  Ann shares how she got her job at Vogue without fashion in her portfolio or knowing anyone in the company by taking their pages, redesigning them herself, and calling the design director each day for a week. The biggest thing when it comes to getting work, Ann says, is your impression and the feeling you give people in your presence.  As designers, we discuss how important feedback is and how to listen to your clients.  Ann shares that she originally went to art school as a painter and went to New York for her painting career, and along the way, everyone worked in graphic design.  In New York, Ann witnessed the first plane hit the World Trade Center on 9/11 while working at Vogue and says it changed her life forever.  Shortly after, she moved out of New York and realized she wanted to support people in building their businesses. Renegade Branding + Personal Storytelling How Ann created the 4 Renegade Brand Archetypes: Nurturer, Disrupter, Innovator, or Geek, and from that, she can help develop your visual brand, messaging, programs, etc. Liberating your rebel spirit is about allowing who you actually are to be at the forefront of what your brand is and what you do.  Ann explains and gives examples of each of her 4 Renegade Brand Archetypes and shares a quiz that you can take to help pinpoint which one you are  There are so many options and opportunities that it's difficult for people to make decisions, which is why branding is so important - so your brand stands out. The whole point of a brand and a strong message is so people can see and understand your value.  We chat about AI, how we've tested it, and the uncharted territory we are going into as designers because it will use your online work and give it to others. Ann explains that head-whipping hooks are strong statements that disrupt people's thinking, so you can bring the value of what you do to follow it.  Ann shares that a client of hers was in a car accident where her nose was severed from her face, which led her to the beauty industry - her head-whipping hook was "nobody wants to be stared at unless they're stunning."   Personal stories are powerful for branding and marketing because people want to connect with you. How Ann gets each client to write a story from each decade of their life to help share who they are, what they do, and the value of it. Ann works with clients through her programs, masterclass, and one-on-one work.  I share the results from my Renegade Brand Archetype Quiz and some details of the Innovator Archetype.  People come to Ann for work because they have an inner rebel who wants to become an outer rockstar, and she'll help them do it through development work.  Ann says it's not about being the best, it's about being different.  Take Ann's Renegade Brand Archetype Quiz and check out Ann's website to learn more about her   Links mentioned: Renegade Branding Renegade Brand Archetype Quiz  Ann Bennett's Website   Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. In this inspiring interview, you will hear from Celeste Hartwell on how can we bring in the feminine energy (intuition) into the masculine structure (action, strategy) to find balance and to fulfil your vision. No matter whether you are working in a corporate environment or you are an entrepreneur, you can relate to our conversation on why women have a tendency to play small or deflect compliments. You will learn about why it is vital for us to understand and acknowledge our worth, not when we want to ask for a pay rise, but as an act to practise receiving. 2020 and 2021 have been challenging for many people, for many different reasons. We also talked about how can we ride through this time and become more present and honest with our emotions. More importantly, how to find strength in the middle of a crisis, and peace, in a time of uncertainty. Celeste Hartwell, the creator of Divine Feminine Leaders, a spiritual leader and money mindset mentor. She is also the managing director at eWomenNetwork in Greater Burlington. After 18 years working in a corporate environment, Celeste now helps her clients to step into their power, become more magnetised, visible and inspired. I'm really happy to bring in a new guest today for my podcast episode today, I'm talking to Celeste Hartwell. So we met through an eWomen networking event and I was blown away by her energy. And then we had a conversation after, and I think by listening to her journey and her view on feminine leadership it would be very interesting and inspirational for many. So first of all, I would like to introduce and welcome Celeste! Celeste: Hi Sze, well, thank you so much for having me on. I know that when we met, it was like, we just talk the same language in a lot of different ways. So I'm so honored to be here and thank you so much for having me. Sze Wing: Thank you. And, you know, one thing for our listeners, or the audience is that we both can talk quite fast when we're excited about things. So let's see how that go. I'm trying to keep it slow. Meet Today's Guest: Michele Mere Michele Mere is a decisive, driven and committed entrepreneur who helps successful business owners expand, duplicate or sell their companies and make big profits using her business valuation and consulting skills. Michele's business expertise has been highlighted during her speeches at Harvard and on NBC, CBS, Fox, Entrepreneur.com and Forbes.com. She is a Stevie Award winning business consultant, best-selling author and the Founder of Decisive Minds. She is a serial entrepreneur who knows how it feels to fail miserably at business, at one time the bank called demanding their $1.5 million and knows how it feels to sign the contract to sell her company for $9 million. Business building tips- DecisiveMinds.com Can you share your incredible journey with the audience today? Life has been and is still and probably will be till the day I die, about business, about entrepreneurship, about creating your own life and your own existence. So I was born into a family who had kids to guarantee they had employees. We had a grocery store, a mobile home park. My dad started the trucking company. We had a laundromat. I mean, if we thought we could make a dime, we did it. The school bus dropped me off at the grocery store in the afternoon because I went to work after school. I thought everybody did that and I found out later they didn't. And I think that really is what began my love, and of business and entrepreneurs. Learning at the at the knees of my father and my grandfather and watching them negotiate and sell and treat people the way people should be treated. In 2007 we had the opportunity to sell our trucking company and our grocery store that year. We retired, my entire family, everyone retired when we sold those two companies. I found myself on the couch every day asking, who is Michele, at this point? What am I going to do? I did a couple of things. I started a company flipping houses, that was a lot of fun. And then the credit stuff happened in 2009. And that fell apart. I was surfing the internet one day. I don't know how I ended up on this site. And I end up on this thing that's talking about how to build businesses and the online world and all this kind of stuff. And I go to a marketing seminar in California about building businesses. It's just one little tweak. I had never done it online. I had no clue what to do there. I started Decisive Minds in January of 2010. And I really just thought I was going to build this online business. I was never going to speak. I wasn't going to network. I wasn't going to leave my house. Because I'm an extreme introvert. What I found out at the end of 2010 was that that doesn't necessarily work. I spent a bunch of money and made none. In January 2011, I had to sit at my father's table, this man, this entrepreneur who helped me to understand who I am, and telling him that I didn't quite make any money with all this time I spent in this business. And I'll never forget this. He said, I don't think that's a viable company. I think you should stop doing that. We need to look for something else for you. I like turned on a dime. And within the next 18 months, I was doing six figures. That was the thing that lit my fire. And that's really why I started this business, I started Decisive Minds, because everything I have been through in my life and you know, we had the failures. I'll never forget the day the bank called and said, hey, we want our $1.5 million back. So I've been through the trenches in all the businesses that we've had, and including Decisive Minds, and come out the other side on many of them. I've done it all when it comes to business. I think I bring a unique perspective to the business consulting world, because of my experience in the past. Can you share some of your tips with our audience today and share a little bit about what you think 2021 is going to look like? I had a magazine reach out to me not too long ago and ask me this exact question like, what do you see is going to be different in the world in 2021 for entrepreneurs. And first, I want to say, I really hope that people take the time to look for the opportunity. And don't just fall back into old habits. What I see different in 2021 is what we're experiencing right now, which is, it's gonna be all businesses will be way more virtual. It doesn't matter what kind of business you're running right now. You're realizing maybe I don't need to have everyone in one office, maybe I can have a more virtual team or let my employees work from home. My business, Decisive Minds, as a consulting business from day one, I set it up as a virtual company, because almost none of my clients are in the same town as me. So we did most of our consulting through Zoom activities, and then a couple of times a year we come together in person. I think that that's going to just kind of become the new norm, the new mainstream opportunity. The second thing is that there's a lot of business owners who do things because that's the way they've always been done. Challenge the status quo. You don't need to do it just because it's always been that way. I think that what we see in 2021 moving forward is it's going to be a more virtual world. For those of you who need to start to make those changes, start to embrace and move forward in that and don't just go back to I have to do everything the way I used to do. You're a master content creator, but you still had to make some shifts you mentioned. So tell us a little bit about that. I had to make some changes. I seriously went after getting seen and getting known and getting heard and putting out a lot of content, like sucking it up and going to networking events, and doing all those things that I absolutely did not want to do. I was invited by the director for eWomen in Houston to talk about my book which I turned into an e-book. I walked into that event terrified. I gave a 15-minute talk. My first ever real talk in this world. And 20 women handed me a check for $100 apiece. I walked out with $2,000 in my pocket. And from the little course that I sold, and they got the e-book for free with the course. I call my coach and said, okay, I can do this. How do I how do I make this bigger at that moment? That was my first real win. Then I came out and I really just I got it that I had to go do those pieces. I had to be seen. That first year, I made a lot of videos. Not a single one of them has my face on it. I knew at that point I had to shift. That people have to engage with me and that they need to see me. So relationship, there's voice, they hear you. That's one level of relationship. They see you. That's another level of relationship. They meet you in person. That's a different level of relationship. The shift for me, has been that I built a really big business. Decisive Minds got huge. And then I went, oh wait, this isn't really what I want. All of a sudden, I woke up one day and didn't want to do all of this. And so 2019 was a really rough year health wise for me. And things started to kind of kind of slow down. And then who knew 2020 would look like it does, right? But here's what I realized, this is the opportunity for me to shift into something that's the other thing I love. I have a degree in accounting, I love the numbers, the reason I can help you build your business is because I understand all of that. My dad told me when I was really little, he's like, look, you don't have to become an accountant. But you should go get an accounting degree. Because when you understand the numbers, you can build any business you want. So that's one of the things I do with all of my clients is make them pay attention to their numbers. I realized I should really be speaking on those topics and building that. What you will more than likely see from me in 2021 is a virtual bookkeeping service tied in to a training type of scenario around this whole conversation of if you're failing, and we look at the numbers, what can we do different? What can we see different? Where is the issue coming from? You are a master of content creation. Can you share some tips on that? #1 - Consistency is the key to success in content marketing and creating content. You say you're going to put out a blog three times a week. You do that every week for a long time. Guess what you have? You end up with 1,000 blog posts on your site like me. Use content in multiple ways. When I create something, how can I use it five times? #2 - Partner with others. You do not have to be the creator of the content to get value from the content. Bring in people who are going to share great content with your community. #3 - I don't I don't necessarily write my own stuff. I use PLR, which is private label rights content. So I have writers who write things that I purchased from them and can put my name on, I might modify them slightly. When I hire someone to write things for me, and they give it to me, I barely change anything. It's more important that I was being consistent and putting out great content. Until I tell them that it's not really me writing it. No one knows. Michele's Free Gift: I have a little course called 28 Days to Grow Your List. Don't let anyone tell you that email is dead. Thanks for listening.   Episode transcript below:   Casey Eberhart (Speaker and Host): Hey, hey, hey everybody. Welcome to today's episode of the Expand the Business podcast. My name... My name? My name is is Casey Eberhart, I am calling in from Los Angeles, California today, with a short-form episode, just a little quick tip, a little thing to help you save time and make more money when you are out networking. And we're going to talk about the 99 cent tool that you probably have in your purse or your junk drawer, that'll help you do the two things that we aim to teach and train on the Expand the Business show, which is save time and/or make more money. So if you are in a position where you need and/or your businesses is being built on referrals, then head on over to ExpandTheBusiness.com, we've got a free download for you over there on getting more referrals. We've got some goodies for you over there, but just happy to have you jump on the show today. And again, you can head over to ExpandTheBusiness.com for your free goodies. So look, let me set the scene for you for just a moment. You get in your car, you put your makeup on, you drive to a networking event, and those networking events are either super early in the morning, maybe you're going to them at lunch, maybe you're going to them in the evening, and it's a Chamber of Commerce event or BNI, LeTip team, Referral Network, eWomen network. Maybe it's even Kiwanis or Lions Club, maybe it's your local chamber. Maybe it's just a networking group where you get together with a group of people and have referral exchanges. Maybe you're headed to a mastermind event. All of these networking events are designed to help connect you with potential referral partners, referral... Of course the phone rings right inside there, right? But it allows you to connect with other people that can produce business and/or referrals and/or relationships for you. But here's what happens most of the time. Most of the time people go there and they are exchanging business cards. And does business really get done that way anymore? No, let's be real. How many times have you got some business cards and you bring them home from that event, and then they go in the trashcan or they sit on your desk for five or six months and then they go on the trashcan. Well, here's the thing, at Expand the Business, we really try to give you the tools and techniques that allow you to cement relationships and move forward with those people that you feel are going to be the best in your connection and best in your network. So here is the 99 cent tool that you should carry with you every single time you go to a networking event. It is a Sharpie. Now, there is a very specific reason why I am suggesting a Sharpie and not just a regular ballpoint or a pencil. Here's the deal, so many people now are carrying glossy business cards to a networking event. And what happens is if you write on a business card with a pencil or a ballpoint pen, very few of those glossy cards are gonna allow you to actually make an imprint on the business card itself. So all you gotta do is go to your local store, your purse, your junk drawer, maybe it's in the seat cushions of your couch, maybe it is in the seat cushions of your car, grab a Sharpie and take it with you to the networking event. Now since you've probably already gone to ExpandTheBusiness.com and got yourself a copy of Get More Referrals, you'll notice that I talk about this exact technique inside that audio, which obviously you're more than welcome to go grab a download of, again, at ExpandTheBusiness.com. But here's what you can do with this Sharpie, when you go to a networking event, you want to be able to decide as you're meeting and connecting with different people, who it's actually worth connecting with and moving forward in a relationship with right there at the event. Okay? And so what you're going to be able to do now is when somebody gives you a business card, which by the way, one of the easy ways to get out of a conversation with somebody is to simply get their business card and say that you will follow up with them later or that you're connecting with folks or whatever your line is that allows you to connect with folks. But you want to take your Sharpie out, and as they hand you your business card, I'm going to suggest two different things that you do with that. Number one is that you code your business card. Now, I have a code that I use for myself and it's really a call or no call symbol. So for me, I used to write that I didn't want to respond to somebody on their business card. And I'm not going to tell you what I used to write, but if you've heard me speak live, you know exactly what that is. And if it's something that I want to follow up with or someone that I feel is a good connection for me, I'm going to put a star right there on the business card with my sharpie pen. Now, if you want to do C no-C, for call and no call, if you want to do FU, for follow up or NFU for not follow up, whatever you want to do, my suggestion is that you use a code so that in the event the other person actually sees what you wrote on their card, they're not going to actually know what it means. Now, for me, what I do is I'll take that business card and while I'm talking to the person in real time, in real conversation, what I'm going to do is I'm going to make some notes on the back of their business card, even if I'm writing over the top of their information, usually on the back that's less vital than what they have on the front. And I might write some things like, "This is going to be a good connection from a referral partner. This might be a prospect, this might be somebody that I just feel is influential and I want to stay in touch with." If they give me some tidbit that's going to help me later on connect with them on a deeper more meaningful relationship, then I'm going to mark that on the business card itself as well. Now, the reason that we use a Sharpie versus a pencil or a ballpoint pen is quite frankly because if you use a ballpoint pen or a pencil, you're going to be like carving into that business card like you are a cave person scraping into a rock. It just doesn't work, there's newer better ways. Now this doesn't mean that you can't do your other things in kind of the relationship building process, like maybe take a picture of the two of you and text it to the person. Maybe you want to connect with them on social media. But remember that followup and the relationship building networking, the onus is on us. So what you're gonna do is you're gonna do two things for this technique to work: Number one, you're going to head over to ExpandTheBusiness.com, grab yourself Get More Referrals, so you can listen to that on your way to a networking event. That's going to give you some great tips, strategies, and things you can say to help you generate more referrals. And number two, you're going to dig around in your purse, you're going to dig around in your junk drawer, and you're going to simply throw a Sharpie either in your car or in your pocket, in your purse, wherever. And the next networking event you head out to, you simply take that in there, and that becomes your tool of choice right there in the conversation. You can write notes on there. Make sure that you understand going in, by the way, that not every person at that event is going to be worthy. And I don't mean that as a person, but from a business perspective, of following up with, staying in touch with them, putting in place your process to help drive and deepen those relationships. So we all have those things where we talk to somebody and they just aren't going to be a good fit. We don't want to be rude, so we just simply mark that as non follow up with whatever code we use with our Sharpie, give them the respect and the time to finish out the conversation and simply move on. Now when you get home, the great thing is the people that you aren't going to follow up with, simply just go to the trashcan, which they would anyways. And number two, the people that you are gonna follow up with, you are going to connect with, now you have a sift and sort mechanism. So you guys, this is Casey Eberhart with another episode of Expand the Business, and again, final offer if you want to head over and generate more referrals, head over to ExpandTheBusiness.com, and there we've got some free goodies for you, we're happy to have you join in the fun. So with that, give somebody else an awesome day. Follow up with a Sharpie as your tool at your next networking event. Until next time, guys, have an amazing day! Ciao, ciao!
