It is only in recent years that sociologists and historians of the social sciences have given empire the attention it deserves in histories of the discipline. In this context, George Steinmetz's The Colonial Origins of Modern Social Thought: French Sociology and the Overseas Empire (Princeton University Press) is likely to be a touchstone text in these debates. Providing a new history of the French national discipline inspired by a ‘Neo-Bourdieusian Historical Sociology of Science', Steinmetz highlights the centrality of ‘colonial sociology', work centered on and/or created in the French overseas colonies and protectorates to the discipline's development.  The French state, eager to consolidate its empire after World War II, were eager to draw on the expertise of sociologists in pursuing this goal; as Steinmetz shows therefore, during this period, a focus on ‘the colonial' became central to French sociology to the extent that roughly half the French sociological field could be considered ‘colonial sociologists'. Despite this entanglement with the French state these colonial sociologists became strong critics of imperialism. Alongside the many stories he uncovers Steinmetz explores in depth the case of four such colonial sociologists: Raymond Aron, Jacque Berque, Georges Balandier and Pierre Bourdieu, seeking to show not just the centrality of colonialism to each writer but how their experiences of empire formed their basis for their future work; for example, how Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, capital and field can be traced to his experiences in colonial Algeria. In our discussion, which also marks the imminent release of the text in paperback, George takes us through this hugely enlightening text, including reflections on why there may have been some ‘disciplinary amnesia' in sociology's unwillingness to confront empire, the relations between sociology and other imperial disciplines, how sociologists from the colonies developed their own work, the lessons from his text about how we should confront colonial sociologists and whether Durkheim had an ‘imperial gaze'. Hello, my name is Feren Laczo, I am an editor at the Review of Democracy, and I am also the co-head of the Ideas section. And it is my pleasure today to share with you a brief list of some of the most impressive publications we have covered this year. Ideas editors and podcasters have been invited to a continuous feast in 2023: the year has offered an unusual number of original publications of the highest caliber. Natasha Wheatley's The Life and Death of States: Central Europe and the Transformation of Modern Sovereignty, the Vienna-based discussion of which we were proud to co-organize; Sam Moyn's Liberalism Against Itself. Cold War Intellectuals and the Making of Our Times that substantially critiques the dominant form Western liberalism has taken; Danielle Allen's exciting proposal of a power-sharing liberalism; George Steinmetz's major monograph on the colonial origins of modern social thought in France; or Adam Shatz's collection of essays on the radical imagination have all been evident highlights. Here comes an all too selective list of five recommendations from RevDem Ideas of books that deserve to be more widely read and discussed.

In this conversation with RevDem editor Ferenc Laczó, George Steinmetz – author of the major new monograph The Colonial Origins of Modern Social Thought. French Sociology and the Overseas Empire – sketches the manifold entanglements of French sociology with the French Empire and colonialism; discusses the key ideas and innovations that have emerged in this context; dissects how indigenous scholars fared within the vast network of French institutions over time; illuminates his own approach to intellectual history he calls a historical socio-analysis of the social sciences; and reflect on how contemporary agendas of decolonization could be made more convincing and fruitful, not least by drawing on what French sociologists of colonialism have “partially and tentatively foreseen.” George Steinmetz is a historical sociologist of states and empires with a focus on modern Germany, France, and Britain and their colonies, and a social theorist especially interested in the history and philosophy of the social sciences. He acts as the Charles Tilly Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan. The Colonial Origins of Modern Social Thought. French Sociology and the Overseas Empire has been published by Princeton University Press.

George Steinmetz is a documentary photographer based in New Jersey, who has shot more than 40 major photo essays for National Geographic. He has won three prizes from World Press Photo, the Environmental Vision award from Pictures of the Year, a citation from the Overseas Press Club, he was named National Geographic's Adventurer of the Year in 2008 and he has a 1 million strong following on Instagram. George is best know for his aerial photography, mainly using a motorised paraglider, which enables him to capture unique images of places inaccessible by traditional aircraft. His restless curiosity for the unknown drove him to hitchhike across Africa as a young man and has been the drive behind his epic body of work which covers remote landscapes, climate change and global food supply.  George's work has huge scope and scale and our conversation touches on a few of George's long-term projects, how and why he got into aerial photography and how he was almost shot with an arrow. It's a real privilege to have George on the show and I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Show Notes Thank you to our sponsor, MPB.

Camel shadows from overhead. Used by permission (c) George Steinmetz Hello to the Bob Enyart Live family. It is with a heavy heart that we announce, as some of you may have heard, that Bob went to be with the Lord on Sunday Sept 12th, 2021. If you'd like to celebrate Bob's life, you're welcome to join his family at the memorial service on Saturday Oct 2nd, at Applewood Baptist Church in Wheat Ridge Colorado. Doors will be opening at 9:00 a.m. If you'd like to support the family, please pray for comfort and healing. And if you'd like to help financially, please donate at kgov.com/store.  We'll be back with more news about the future of Bob Enyart Live soon. For now, enjoy this rerun of a recent episode. God bless. Press release: Pastor Bob Enyart, Known for His Unwavering Pro-Life Work, Daily Radio Show, and Christian Ministry Has Gone To Be With the Lord at the Age of 62 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ARVADA, Colorado, September 14, 2021 – Following a week of caring for his wife Cheryl's COVID-19 symptoms, Bob Enyart checked into Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colorado on August 28, 2021. While in the hospital, his condition declined and he was eventually moved to the ICU with pneumonia on September 1. Despite the efforts of the hospital staff, his health continued to deteriorate and he eventually died on Sunday, September 12 at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Bob became a follower of Jesus in his youth and his most enduring legacy will be those he led to Christ. Teaching the truth of God's Word was Bob's foremost dedication. As pastor of Denver Bible Church, he would sometimes say, “If I could ask God any question and receive a response, I'd ask, ‘which of my teachings are wrong?'” He loved to study and debate theology. To Bob, ascertaining truth was paramount.  He garnered nationwide recognition with his television show “Bob Enyart Live,” which ran from 1994 until 1999. Though his program later shifted to radio, Bob's unique style and extraordinary message remained the same. He tirelessly shared the message that this generation is dying in sin and needs the Savior, abortion is murder, and that people should flee government schools, abandon immorality, abhor what is evil, and love one another. Over the years, Bob was often asked to participate on other programs including Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, where he jumped at the opportunity to mock Jimmy Kimmel, Larry Flynt and others to their faces. He was a tireless worker, and despite the importance of his work, would often drop everything at a moment's notice to help someone in need. Still, his proudest achievement was that of his role as husband and father. He is survived by his wife Cheryl, their seven sons, three daughters-in-law, seven grandchildren, his mother, two brothers, one sister, and countless nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was surrounded by his loved ones who fought his illness with him until the very end. Read more about Bob here, from his favorite news site, LifeSiteNews.com! *Today we present the return of a classic show. Update: ICR's Acts & Facts gives a shout out to RSR in their current March 2019 issue where Brian Thomas writes about our online spreadsheet, List of Biomaterial Fossil Papers (maintained), "Real Science Radio host Bob Enyart and I continue to curate that growing list online." Thank you Brian, Henry Morris III, and everyone at the Institute for Creation Research!   Back when Real Science Radio needed to correct National Geographic's fake news story that camels had not yet been domesticated in the time of Abraham (rsr.org/camels), we turned to Archaeologist Titus Kennedy. Tonight Dr. Kennedy will speak at our Rocky Mountain Creation Fellowship (7 p.m. at Littleton Baptist Church at 1400 W. Caley Avenue) on the archaeology of the Exodus. On today's program, Bob Enyart asks Titus about the historicity of the Gospels; the earliest ancient fragments; the Roman Empire's habit of taking a census by requiring citizens to travel to their hometowns; the accusation that Bethlehem wasn't inhabited back then, around, say, the year 0; the historic significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls; whether Herod's reputation challenges Luke's record of the massacre of the innocents; Newseek's Nina Burleigh and her admission that bias against the Bible could blind archaeologists to the evidence; the pros and cons of Constantine's mother Helena, not unlike a guy named Ron Wyatt, who seemed to find everything she went looking for. * Carbon dating the Isaiah Scroll: Was it written approximately 300 BC or even 330 BC? We have some exciting drone news lined up for you this week. Our biggest story this week is about the all-new DJI Ronin RS2. Last week, our good friend and drone pilot, Osita LV shared some images on his Twitter account which suggest that a new DJI gimbal, the Ronin RS might be in the works. The DJI Ronin has a loyal following not just among aerial photographers but also among ground photogaphers. Now, the latest industry reports suggest that after the Ronin S and the compact Ronin SC, DJI is gearing up to launch the DJI RS2. Our next story is equally exciting. And all credit to good old Osita for this story as well. As per these reports, along with the Ronin SC, DJI is also planning to come out with a FPV drone. It shall be interesting to see if DJI is able to offer a complete FPV package consisting of a FPV drone, FPV goggles, and FPV googgles for less than $1,000. In yet more news, DJI's Brendan Schulman engaged in some friendly banter with Skydio on Twitter. While Skydio is of the opinion that fully autonomous drones are set to become reality soon, current drone laws dicatate that a drone cannot be flown without a pilot. So, which side of the fence do you set on? Do you think that complex creative and technical jobs can be executed flawlessly without any human intervention? Other stories discussed in today's show include uncorroborated drone crash stories and National Geographic's George Steinmetz's tryst with the NYPD. Tune in for some exciting insights! Also a 4-time author, he is well-known for his aerial work including global projects featuring image and journalism collections over decade long spans. (African Air, New York Air, Empty Quarter: A Photographic Journey to the Heart of the Arabian Desert) After graduating from Stanford, he left a career in Geophysics to hitchhike the African continent for 18 months, where he fell in love with photography. We discuss some of the sticky situations he has gotten into along the way, how seeing the world from an aerial perspective has changed how he thinks and lives today, what it's like to prepare and navigate mutli-year assignments for National Geographic. His new book, just released on Earth Day, The Human Planet: Earth at The Dawn of the Anthropocene is a stunning photographic novel of how the hand of humanity has impacted our climate, ecosystem, and environment.

DJI has confirmed a release date of April 27th for the much-awaited Mavic Air 2. This is PART TWO of the Stitchery Stories LIVE recording at the Podcast Social Club! Please listen to PART ONE before listening to this - it won't make any sense if you haven't heard Part One! This is the second half of the live recording. It was a lot of fun chatting with my two lovely guests, CarolAnn J Allan and Mary-Ann Toop about fabric and threads, creativity and our well-being. It was also a step out of collective comfort zones to be doing this live in front of a ticket-bearing audience :-) Thank you to Podcast Social Club for inviting us and for organising such an interesting event. We were honoured to be taking part. Anyway, we chatted around our cornerstone topics and as usual had a laugh doing so. We also had an interesting discussion about the emotional and social and mental health benefits of stitching and creativity. Sue had 2 amusing contributions... a recent 'disaster' and a very old UnFinished Object. For this episode... and to see images of the 2 items from Sue that caused such hilarity, then go visit https://www.stitcherystories.com/podcastsocialclubparttwo Like: https://www.facebook.com/stitcherystories/ Look: https://www.instagram.com/stitcherystories_podcast Podcast Social Club: Visit: https://www.podcastsocialclub.com/ Like: https://www.facebook.com/PodcastSocialClub/ Look: https://www.instagram.com/PodcastSocialClub/ Mary-Ann Toop https://www.stitcherystories.com/maryanntoop/ https://concordiasworld.com/ CarolAnn J Allan https://www.stitcherystories.com/carolannjallan (From 11Dec19) https://www.carolannjallan.com/ Other artists and places also mentioned: Mr Finch http://www.mister-finch.com/ Meredith Woolnough http://meredithwoolnough.com.au/ Samantha Bryan http://samanthabryan.co.uk/ George Steinmetz https://georgesteinmetz.com/ Burton Constable Hall https://www.burtonconstable.com/ Hull & East Riding Branch of The Embroiderer's Guild https://www.facebook.com/HERByEmbroidery/

Earlier this month (August 1), a special edition of The New York Times Magazine went online, and a few days later hit the newsstands. The issue contained a single 30,000 word article titled, “Losing Earth: The Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change.” Penned by NYTMagazine writer-at-large Nathaniel Rich, with grant support from the non-profit Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting, and based on 18 months of reporting and over a hundred interviews, it tells the story (along with a gallery of stunning photos and online videos by George Steinmetz) of the decade between 1979-1989 when an international scientific and political consensus first emerged on the causes and dangers of climate change. In his detailed narrative history, Rich describes how those hopeful efforts nevertheless failed to develop an effective national and international response to what was known to be an impending global catastrophe.Today, guest host Rob Sivak looks at why so many opportunities to put the brakes on climate change were missed back in the 1980s, why climate policy remains a political football thirty years -- and another half-trillion metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions -- later. And he considers the looming question: what are the prospects that humankind will ever find a way to meet this existential challenge? Rob puts those questions to the author of “Losing Earth,” Nathaniel Rich, writer-at-large with the New York Times Magazine, author of three novels -- King Zeno (2018), Odds Against Tomorrow (2013), and The Mayor’s Tongue (2008) -- and a contributor of fiction and non-fiction work to many literary and opinion magazines.Rich joins us on the line from the studios of NPR affiliate WWNO in New Orleans.

The Unhappy Divorce of Sociology and Psychoanalysis: Diverse Perspectives on the Psychosocial (Palgrave MacMillan, 2014)is an edited volume. Its chapters document the central place of psychoanalysis in American sociology in the 1950s and sketch the backstory to that relationship. The core chapters expose the campaign waged by leading sociologists to discredit psychoanalysis as they sought legitimacy for the discipline through the adoption of positivist research paradigms. Some of that story is told through biographical and autobiographical accounts. The co-editors are among the authors of the book's 18 chapters as are Neil Smelser, Nancy Chodorow, George Steinmetz, and Jeffrey Prager. In this interview, the volume's editors, Lynn Chancer andJohn Andrews, respond to questions about the political climate surrounding “the divorce” and add their reflections on the standing of psychoanalysis in sociology in the early years of the 21st century.
