The English established a colony on the coast near today's Phippsburg, Maine in 1607, only a couple of months after the founding of Jamestown. It would survive just over a year.  The Popham or Sagadahoc Colony was the culmination of several exploratory missions along the New England coast from approximately Cape Cod to Maine between 1602 and 1605.  In 1602, Bartholomew Gosnold, who would eventually die at Jamestown, led the first of those missions to the New England coast and gave several famous places names that we use today, including Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard.  His expedition would stay in the Elizabeth Islands, which shelter Buzzard's Bay in Massachusetts, for more than three weeks, and have extensive encounters with local indigenous peoples. The Gosnold narrative of those encounters has all sorts of interesting stuff! And through the Forward Music Project, she’s decided to show people who she is, and who women and girls are. Learn Amanda’s story (which includes many digressions from, and returns to, the classical music world), and learn why she decided to aim all of her disparate passions at one target. Hear the innovate pieces that she’s commissioned in what she calls a “giving project,” which seeks not only to bring awareness to causes that benefit women and girls, but to donate money to those causes. Music in this episode (all from the Forward Music Project): “For Edna,” by Leila Adu “Stray Sods,” by Amanda Feery “Swerve,” by Jessica Meyer “Memories lie dormant: they are reviled before they are revealed,” by Morgan Krauss Audio production by Todd “Take 5” Hulslander with pick up sticks by Dacia Clay and assistance from Mark DiClaudio. Dr. Vicki Thayer, Executive Director of Winn Feline Foundation, interviews Dr. Jody Gookin of North Carolina State University about her recently funded 2016 research project (W16-053), Efficacy of a new treatment for cats with ronidazole-resistant Tritrichomonas foetus infection.  Tritrichomonas foetus (TF) is a parasitic infection that causes foul relapsing bouts of diarrhea in cats from every corner of the world. Only the drug ronidazole has been identified as effective in treating TF infection but 36% of cats fail to clinically benefit from the drug and others suffer from drug toxicity. An alternative drug has been identified that is 10 times more effective than ronidazole at killing feline TF. The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness and safety of this alternative drug for treatment of cats with TF infection and diarrhea and that failed prior treatment with ronidazole.

Recorded May 31, 2015 at Stockholm Studios in Bushwick, Brooklyn I'd met Patrick Gookin in 2007/2008 while I was living in Los Angeles but only vaguely remembered the night when he reached out last year to share his work. It's a strange feeling when someone remembers a moment with you that you have trouble retrieving. One of the hazards of getting old I suppose. Patrick was in town for a workshop with Todd Hido, but found enough free time to join us to talk about his book Los Angeles By Car, living and photographing in Japan, taking pictures out his window in Silver Lake, and “men flashing plants.” He has been working on a new project about the California drought and each of the books he brought along were intriguing. As we like to say, we've set up a pretty good scam for checking out photobooks with this podcast. I can safely say that doing this show is how I prefer to experience new photobooks. Each week is a surprise and that makes it fun and interesting for us, and hopefully for you as well. Photobooks/Photography Discussed
