Dale Blasingame, an assistant professor of practice in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University, joins the Big Ideas TXST podcast to discuss the era of deep fakes. Deep fakes refer to the use of artificial intelligence applications to create convincing, lifelike audio and video reproductions of individuals, often celebrities. Crucially, the deep fakes can behave in ways without the approval or consent of the individual being faked and can be misused for fake product endorsements, political gain or even pornography. The technology behind deep fakes is advancing so rapidly that even experts are finding it increasing difficult to tell the difference between fakes and reality. Blasingame received the 2017 Presidential Excellence Award for Teaching and the 2023 Presidential Excellence Award for Service at TXST. He is a part of the Digital Media Innovation faculty, and he teaches courses that introduce students to different aspects of how technology is changing journalism, media and marketing. Before joining TXST, Blasingame was a television news producer. He spent nine years at WOAI-TV in San Antonio, where he won two Lone Star Emmy awards and was nominated for a third. Before that, he was a news anchor and sports reporter for KTSA-AM in San Antonio. Blasingame is a member of the Online News Association, Society of Professional Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.FURTHER READING:What to know about the rise of AI deepfakesCalifornia Bans Political ‘Deepfakes' during Election SeasonAI is fuelling a deepfake porn crisis in South Korea. Dale Blasingame, an assistant professor of practice in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University, joins the Big Ideas TXST podcast to discuss National Parks, State Parks and incorporating these outdoor treasures into higher education. A founder of the Study-in-America program at Texas State, each semester Blasingame oversees a class of students who travel to public parks across the U.S. to hone their journalism skills and learn to tell stories with substance and relevance. Students benefit from the experience of studying beyond the traditional classroom setting, much like studying abroad. Blasingame is an avid hiker and traveler. In 2014, he visited all 95 state parks in Texas in one year. He's now almost halfway through his mission to visit all 400+ national park properties. Dale's dog, Lucy, joins him on trips and loves to hike and climb rocks. Blasingame and Lucy were included on Texas Highways Magazine's list of Extraordinary Texans for 2016, and his stories have been featured on TV, radio, digital and in magazines. He's been able to marry his passions of technology and our parks by creating a course called Mobile Storytelling in the Park, in conjunction with Texas Parks and Wildlife, where students produce social video content at state parks. In 2017, Blasingame received a grant to develop the School of Journalism and Mass Communication's first Study in America course, where he took students to do similar work in national parks. The program is now in its third year. Blasingame is a member of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, National Park Foundation, National Parks Conservation Association and The Trail Foundation. He's also a licensed commercial drone pilot. Before joining the Texas State faculty, Blasingame was a television news producer. “The creative adult is the child who survived.” (Ursula K. Le Guin) Ilana Blasingame has a job in TV that’s dynamic, collaborative, and uniquely ties together the values that she holds in the rest of her life. Her creative childhood ideas have found purchase in her adult life, which is pretty much the dream, right? But how did she get there, and what can we learn from her path? How did she hold onto her creative dreams amidst burnout, imposter syndrome, and uncertainty about her path? Tune into the latest episode to hear answers to questions like: Do we need to have burning bush moments about the big choices in our life? If we don’t feel really SURE about a choice, does that mean it’s not right? If we’re not sure...do we wait for the epiphany? We also discuss: How to go with the flow and do the next right thing at work (and in life) How every job and experience we have is nurturing a larger skill set How motherhood changes perspective (and can help you give less f*cks) How to think about yourself less - and what kind of value you want to offer in life MORE If you like what you hear, please subscribe, rate and review this podcast! The Phillies and Diamondbacks combined to hit more home runs in one game than we previously thought possible. A new crop of MLB draftees joined the ranks of professional athletes with silly names. Later, we appreciate Don Blasingame for what he was. A home run hitter? Not really. A lean, mean bunting machine and a true blue Tater Tot? Absolutely. David Blasingame, a veteran in the car industry for over 45 years, started as a cashier in a body shop and moved through the ranks to his end goal at AutoFlex Leasing. In college, he found an opening in this body shop and it changed his life forever by putting his foot into the car industry by taking a risk of applying for a new position. He went from a fixed salary to determining his know income via commission, allowing him to buy a house and new car that first year! David’s key advice in the industry is that determination is key and you should stay focused on your end goal. He also states that is not about how much you make on the car, it’s about how many cars you actually sell because you’re creating customers and more referrals. In his time with AutoFlex, he understood that because of the leasing programs, he would get the most customers for the frequency of short term leases, trading in to get the newest models or even buying the car they leased! As a salesman, David could spot a salesman from the crowd. To hire a good salesman, he would check background checks as far back as you can go as well as testing the potential hire. You need to make sure that your employees are trained effectively, well educated and the urgency to know where they are in the transaction. Here are the nitty-gritty details about Blaster, just in case you aren't as familiar with him as we are. Originally from Colorado, he joined the PRCA in 2003, and he made his Mountain States Circuit Finals every year since. He made the NFR in 2010 with Cody Hintz where they placed in three rounds and he finished 14th in the world with about $89k won. He won the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo in 2014 with long-time Mountain States Circuit friend JW Borrego. And this year, he won RodeoHouston with Kyle Lockett, effectively punching his ticket to the 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He's roping with Brandon Bates for the rest of the year, hoping to get his partner to Vegas, too. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Starting at a very young age we begin to cultivate ideas of who we want to become when we “grow up”. We want to be an astronaut. A doctor. A painter. A scientist. A rockstar. As we get older, adults and other influences often push us to further refine these ideas of who we want to be. Typically well-intentioned, they want us to have something we are working towards, a single path to stay on.As I reflected upon this recently, I was struck by one thing in particular: we’re conditioned to think we can only focus fully on being one thing. One career path. One goal in mind. Yet in my adult experiences, I’ve come across many friends and acquaintances that have managed to apply themselves fully to multiple pursuits. They are scientists AND poets. Politicians AND artists. CEOs AND writers. Or in the case of Jessica Blasingame, an accountant AND a wellness expert.Jessica first began her career in the world of corporate accounting. Early inklings told her that entrepreneurship might be a part of her future path, and she chose to pursue accounting because she knew that the skill set would come in handy if those ideas ever came to fruition. However, the more time Jessica spent in the corporate environment, the less happy she became with her work. Around this same time, her health began to decline. Battling chronic fatigue and pain, she started to seek out solutions of any kind to ease her condition. It was then she realized she needed to make a critical challenge both in her life and in her work. Inspired by everything she was learning about health and nutrition, and encouraged by friends and family, she struck out on her own as an entrepreneur working in the world of wellnessSince that point in time, her entrepreneurial path has continued to evolve. Working as a yoga instructor and wellness coach, she was consistently interfacing with other small business owners in the space that needed help with their finances. When they learned about Jessica’s background, they would approach her for help, which is how she came to realize she could marry both of her passions into a single business. It was at this point she decided to start Beam Financial Group, a business coaching & bookkeeping firm that specializes in working with companies in the health and wellness space. By allowing her business to change over time she has created a company that allows her to bring all of her interests and expertise to her work every day.Listening to Jessica’s story was an important personal reminder for me that we do not need to separate our passions. We don’t have to only bring part of ourselves into our work and fit all of our other interests into small sporadic blocks of free time. We can be a business owner AND a mother. A consultant AND a gym junkie. An accountant AND a yoga teacher. It is these seemly different pieces that make up who we are, give us a dynamic perspective, and help us be fully invested in our lives and in our work. We can be it all and in fact, we can be better for it.Use the audio player above to listen to my conversation with Jessica Blasingame.Additionally, if you want to connect further with Jessica, make sure to visit her website, and follow her on Facebook and Instagram.
Analog Ethics in our Digital World Until we’re sure what our AR and VR future looks like, we have to plan for the unknown, and that includes the ethics of our digital inventions. That’s the seed of this conversation with by Jim Blasingame, author of “The 3rd Ingredient: The Journey of Analog Ethics into the World of Digital Fear and Greed.” In the second episode of The Em Cast, by the Emerging Technologies Community, Blasingame talks with CompTIA executive Jim Hamilton about the wild world of ethics related to emerging tech, and how some of the analog rules still apply. “We’re responsible for digital ethics ourselves,” said Blasingame. “We need to be part of the solution.” The Emerging Technology Community is one of 10 CompTIA Communities and works to encourage the adoption of new and emerging technology, as long as it improves business outcomes for members and their clients. While digital adoption overtakes analog processes, we’re still analog beings requiring analog ethics, Blasingame said. “And if you don’t put ethics into digital leverage you won’t get ethics out of it,” he said.
