Send us a textIn this conversation, Angela and Shawn discuss the differences between blackwater and greywater. They explain that blackwater comes from toilets, sinks with garbage disposals, and dishwashers, while greywater comes from sinks, showers, and washing machines. They talk about the various ways to treat and reuse greywater, including filtration, sedimentation, biological treatment, and disinfection. They also highlight the environmental impacts of separating blackwater and greywater, such as water conservation, reduction of sewage load, and soil health. Finally, they emphasize the importance of disposing of blackwater appropriately to prevent water pollution and eutrophication. If you have comments or questions about our podcast, you can reach us through this link. With water scarcity concerns rising, we must look at what can be done at saving potable water use. By treating and reusing lightly contaminated greywater at both the residential and commercial level, there is the potential to save millions of gallons of potable water use each year. Decentralized greywater treatment can be implemented into new builds across the United States to start this mission of saving water up to 35% per home. One home alone can save more than 12,000 gallons of potable water usage in one year, giving relief to infrastructure, saving energy for pumping water and reducing consumption. Hydraloop is a patent device that has been installed all over the world, holding NSF 350 certification as well as UL-979 and IAPMO. 4 Learning Objectives: 1.    Understand the types of water in the home. 2.    Learn about technology used to treat lightly contaminated greywater. 3.    Understand implementation of greywater treatment into the home. 4.    Identify potential water savings by getting the consumer involved, ultimately leading to savings in infrastructure, density and energy.

The Sovereign Homestead Podcast

Today's episode is all about cycling nutrients on your homestead to build rich, healthy, fertile soils that can't help but be productive. Soil fertility IS the number one asset a sovereign homestead can have. Indeed it's just about impossible to sovereign without it! Join me today for a high level overview of the different methods of cycling nutrients and generating your own fertility inputs to boost the productivity of your landscape and keep money in your pocket! We'll also look at how these different systems can play well together to capture and cycle nearly ALL of the "waste"streams generated by a typical American household into valuable amendments that can help you increase your independence from the grocery store. This episode is all about the permaculture principle of WASTE = FOOD! We will cover: Vermicomposting - Perhaps the easiest and highest value nutrient cycling system with tremendous benefits in nearly all contexts. Thermophilic composting - good 'ol fashioned turn 'n burn compost piles for processing large amounts of bulk materials into quality soil amendment. Johnson-Su Bioreactor composting system - produce incredibly high fungal-content compost that is great for perennial cropping systems. Compost tea brewing - brewing aerobic teas to get the most bang for your buck from your beneficial biological inocolums. This is a HUGE leverage point! Bokashi - a type of anaerobic "pickling" of food wastes - awesome because this can handle everything that worms don't like! Livestock - Chickens, pigs and black soldier fly larvae - all great way to get more value out of "waste" and turn it into food for you or something that grows food for you. Charcoal & Biochar - make a soil amendment that will literally last for thousands of years - the ultimate legacy investment to pass on to your kin. Korean Natural Farming Indigenous Effective Micro-organisms - a simple, effective and damn near free way to make a site-specific biological inoculum for your growing systems that literally comes from where you live! And the best part is - you only have to do it once! Greywater - sink water, laundry water, bathing water - all nutrient rich water that should go into your landscape to grow something! Blackwater  - yes, I'm talking about toilet water here. Conventional septic systems inject this pathogen-laden water into the ground (often times into the same water supply that wells for potable water are tapping) when it could be utilized by biological systems at the surface to grow tons of food - with no stink of course! Compost Toilets  - dry composting toilets are an excellent way to capture and utilize solid human wastes and turn them into a valuable soil amendment - for free! Biodegradable packaging (cardboard)- don't just recycle it, or throw it out - CYCLE IT and use it to enrich your homestead soil! Grey water is relatively clean waste water that can be reused to do things like irrigate gardens and flush toilets. This grey water can come from showers, baths, sinks, dish washers, and washing machines. You can retrofit homes to utilize grey water or use some simple methods like 5 gallon buckets. Using our grey water reduces the load on the sewage system, is better for the environment, and can save you money. With climate change threatening freshwater sources, water demand across the globe is likely to increase by 20 - 30% between now and 2050. In this episode, we're looking at two promising solutions to create clean drinking water from surprising places: our sewers and our oceans. We speak with General Manager of the Orange County Water District, Mike Markus, about debunking the “toilet to tap” fear and how turning our wastewater into clean drinking water can be a closed-loop solution to mounting water scarcity. We also hear from Dr. William Tarpeh about new research at Stanford University that could make desalination a more viable solution; one that's less costly and better for the environment. Biographical Notes: Michael (Mike) R. Markus is the general manager of the Orange County Water District (OCWD; the District), which manages the Orange County Groundwater Basin that supplies water to more than 2.5 million people in north and central Orange County, Calif. With more than 40 years of experience, Mike is well known for his expertise in large project implementation and water resource management. In September 2007, he became only the sixth general manager in the District's history.During his 33-year career at the District, Mike was responsible for managing the implementation of the $480 million Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) program. This project is the largest potable reuse project in the world and has won many awards including the 2008 Stockholm Industry Water Award, 2009 ASCE Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award, 2014 U.S. Water Prize and the 2014 Lee Kuan Yew Prize. In 2015, Mike oversaw the completion of the 30 MGD GWRS Initial Expansion. The expansion brought the total production capacity of the GWRS to 100 MGD of high-quality water, which is enough to serve 850,000 people annually. Water is one of life's most precious resources, yet abuse and mismanage it. That's not surprising because we have created a system and society that divorces ourselves from where we get our water. We take for granted the potable water in our sinks, and are ignorant about where it goes after it flows into our drains. On this episode, Laura Allen of Greywater Action helps to demystify greywater and how we can take practical steps to integrate water systems into our lives, our homes, and our yards. She provides low cost and low tech solutions that everyone can partake in. Laura is the author of The Water-Wise Home: How to Conserve, Capture, and Reuse Water in Your Home and Landscape, a phenomenal resource that should be on every Change Agent's book shelf.
