Right now, it's Harmony Week here in Australia, and March 21 marks Harmony Day, a day where businesses, schools and organisations are told to wear orange in celebration of Australia's recognition of diversity and multiculturalism. The federal government's website labels it as a day which celebrates "our diversity, and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds". But March 21 is not recognised as 'Harmony Day' anywhere else in the world. In fact, it's observed as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. In this episode of The Quicky, we take a look at the dark origins of March 21. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We're listening! From Monday 20 to Sunday 26 March, Australians celebrate Harmony Week, engaging in a range of activities promoting inclusivity, respect and a sense of belonging. We visited the Williamstown Community and Education Center, where we talked about harmony with the students of diverse backgrounds, who attend English and drama classes. Their teacher told us about the activities in which the students participated during the past week. We also talked about the meaning of harmony and its role in Australian cultural and social life with Anja Acker, from the ensemble Anja i Zlatna, and Nela Trifković, from the ensemble Saray Iluminado.

In the previous episode in this series, we heard from two young women about their experiences as immigrants into this country. The context set by our host Richard Bawden, was the fact that the recording was made during Harmony Week starting 21st March. A week of celebrations of the cohesion and inclusion in Australia as a multicultural society. In this episode today, Richard talks with two other young women from different countries in the region to explore whether or not they feel included in a cohesive society and what, if anything from their personal experiences indicates that there is still room for getting to better together for the further development of an even more tolerant and culturally diverse society.

Harmony Week was developed out of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March, but many people from diverse backgrounds think the reframing around "harmony" is taking the focus off their experience of racism. Sukhjit Khalsa is a slam poet, playwright and director who has developed work around growing up as a Sikh Australian. She is developing a new rap on this issue of reframing and the pigeonholing of people from diverse backgrounds.
In this week we celebrate nationally what has become known as Harmony week. Established by the Howard government back in 1999, Harmony Day (the 21st March) was intended as a celebration of cohesion and inclusion within Australian society. It was also to promote a tolerant and culturally diverse society. In this episode we hear from two young women from different countries in the region about their experiences as immigrants into such a claimed culture - is it as good as it gets or is there still room for getting to better?

Most primary schools celebrate the different cultures that makeup Australia. Harmony Week is a particular time of the year when children are encouraged to celebrate the diversity in the country and their schools. But are we missing the point? New research from Monash University has revealed that students want to talk about racism and that the approach most schools are taking is not addressing concerns about racism.Hannah Yared is a psychologist and the lead researcher on the study of racism in schools.
