Read the transcript of this episode: https://therealnews.com/family-of-beloved-baltimore-soccer-coach-killed-by-private-security-guard-demands-justiceEDITOR'S NOTE: The Justice for Kevin march will be taking place at 6:30pm EST on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 4020 E. Lombard Street in Baltimore, Maryland, not on Thursday, Dec. 8. Kevin Torres was beloved by his family and his community. After emigrating from Honduras decades ago, Torres built a life in Baltimore, where he and his wife ran a concrete and construction company, along with raising their family. In his spare time, Torres coached the Villanueva adult Soccer Team. On the night of Nov. 6, Kevin was out with family and friends at ChrisT Bar in Highlandtown celebrating his team's victory in their league championship. But the festive atmosphere took a quick turn after a dispute over a missing cellphone resulted in an altercation involving the bar's security guard. Kevin tried to intervene when the security guard began to argue with his stepdaughter. Moments later, Kevin was dead. As The Baltimore Sun reported, “The security guard told Baltimore Police he discharged his gun early Monday morning because Torres threw a brick at him. But three witnesses disputed that account… The security guard has not been arrested and officials declined to release his name.” What really happened on the night Kevin Torres was killed at ChrisT bar? Why do these shootings at the hands of private security guards keep happening? And what can be done to secure justice for Kevin and his family? In this exclusive interview, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez sits down with Sor Torres, Kevin's wife, Erick Vicenty, Kevin's stepson, and Kevin Medina, a close friend of the family.A GoFundMe has been set up to help Kevin's family pay for funeral costs: https://www.gofundme.com/f/funeraria-para-m-esposo?utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet&utm_content=undefined&utm_medium=copy_link_all&utm_source=customer&utm_term=undefinedThe family and their supporters are planning a march to demand justice for Kevin on Wed, Dec. 7, at 6:30pm EST. The march will begin at 4020 E. Lombard Street in Baltimore, Maryland, and all supporters are invited to attend.Studio: Adam Coley, Cameron GranadinoPost-Production: Cameron GranadinoHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

While she was a student at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore-based artist and muralist Jaz Erenberg worked on her first community-centered art piece with the homeless population residing along Falls Way. Then, around graduation, Jaz was part of artist Michael Owen's HOME Artist Residency. This opportunity allowed her to continue to focus on public art while painting her first mural, a large, quote-filled piece in Highlandtown that centers on the theme of “What is home?” Today, Jaz is an independent muralist with 25 brightly-colored works throughout Baltimore, including one on the exterior of her home in Upper Fell's Point. In this episode, Jaz talks about: How she developed her style as an artist and the process behind five of her pieces and projects, including the Highlandtown mural and her work with the East Baltimore Midway neighborhood as a Designer in Residence with the Neighborhood Design Center; How she engages communities in her art, how this process has evolved over time, and how her background as a teacher has been an asset in her work; The time when she was contemplating leaving teaching to focus on her work as an independent muralist and how she reached this decision; What she wishes she knew when she started her business, her advice for other artists, and more. In 2019, Donte Johnson joined the Revival Hotel team as general manager, and set things in motion to turn the hotel into more than just a place to lay your head or to grab a drink. Johnson is committed to ensuring the hotel is a space that is inclusive and welcoming to all. This is done through various efforts as part of the Hotel's social impact focus---  a plan launched in January 2020 with the help of the Georgetown Beeck Center for Social Impact and Innovation to elevate and support minority-owned businesses and develop and nurture relationships with local organizations in order to make an impact on the local community and beyond. To advance its social impact efforts, Johnson hired the hotel's first-ever Director of Culture & Impact, Jason Bass, who has spearheaded numerous efforts on behalf of the hotel including curated programming and events such as educational workshops, interesting conversations highlighting diverse voices from across the community (in celebration of Black History Month, Women's History Month, around medical cannabis on 4/20, Earth Day, etc.), art pop-ups, etc. Beyond their programming on-site, Revival works to support the Baltimore community through partnerships with local minority businesses, engaging in philanthropic efforts and providing assistance to the community wherever the need made be. Some examples of this include a commitment to engage with local and Black-owned businesses, which has resulted in vendor partnerships with Lor Tush (the hotel purchased a year's worth of toilet paper) and Art of Balance Wellness Spa, both of which are women and Black-owned small businesses in Baltimore, and a soon-to-be-announced partnership with Black Acres Roastery, a Black-owned artisan coffee roaster located in the Highlandtown district of Baltimore, as well as an internship program with Morgan State University and the ongoing fundraising effort with Black-owned label La Fete du Rose (owner is a Baltimore native) to benefit the Baltimore-based Learning to Live Movement, providing travel opportunities for high school students of color. The hotel plans to continue modifying its vendor/supplier list to support local and minority-owned businesses to provide opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses to grow and flourish.  Throughout the pandemic, the hotel has provided free meals to those in need, discounted rooms to first responders and donated restaurant space to women- and Black-owned restaurants Urban Oyster and Breaking Bread (both which are still working out of the hotel to this day!). January 18, 2021 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday established by the US Congress in 1983 to honor the life and work of the slain civil rights leader and, in the words of this year's presidential proclamation, to "encourage all Americans to recommit themselves to Dr. King’s dream by engaging in acts of service to others, to their community, and to our Nation."  Midday marks this year's MLK Day of Service by focusing on the work of three local individuals for whom every day is a day of service.  Tom speaks first with J.C. Faulk, a diversity and inclusion consultant who was named a 2016 Community Fellow by Open Society Institute-Baltimore for his Circle of Voices project, an innovative effort to open dialogues between disparate communities. Faulk is also the founder of BMore Community Food, which is helping underserved communities weather the COVID-19 storm by re- distributing and donating surplus, healthful food to families on Baltimore's West Side and across the city. Tom's next guest is Dr. Marisela Gomez. She is a physician, public health expert and the author of Race, Class, Power, and Organizing in East Baltimore: Rebuilding Abandoned Communities in America (2013). Dr. Gomez is also one of the co-founders of VOLAR, the acronym for Village of Love and Resistance, an organization promoting a new cooperative model for economic development that is bringing land and property ownership to marginalized communities in Baltimore’s East Side.  Tom's final guest today is Bishop Bruce Lewandowski, the Pastor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Highlandtown, and an active member of BUILD, Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development.  His Catholic ministry at Sacred Heart, like his previous ministries in New York, Saint Lucia in the Caribbean, and Philadelphia, is grounded in community organizing and activism.  The Right Reverend Lewandowski's parish includes a LatinX community that has been particularly hard-hit by the coronavirus, and whose residents have had difficulties accessing traditional sources of relief. All of Midday's MLK Day of Service guests today join us on Zoom.  ___________________________________________________________________ Tom took a few moments in today's program to acknowledge the untimely passing Sunday of a man whose service to his community was legendary:     "A word about incredibly sad news for our city.  Dante Barksdale, the outreach coordinator for Safe Streets, was shot to death near the Douglas Homes in east Baltimore yesterday.  I do not know the circumstances that led to Dante’s murder.  I do know that as a “violence interrupter,” Dante dedicated the last ten years of his life to de-escalating disputes and intervening in situations where he convinced people who were considering violence to consider an alternative.  He repeatedly placed himself in dangerous situations, using his skill, intelligence and compassion to show people a better way; a safer way; a way forward. He was trying to make Baltimore better.  He refused to give up on young people who had, in some instances, given up on themselves.  Dante knew the pressures and stresses that people in communities of color experience, and how those challenges can sometimes lead to bad decision-making.  He knew about this because of his own life experience, and because of his empathy and his love.  His loss is profoundly sad.  His presence and leadership will be sorely missed.  His murder is a horrible reminder of the challenges we face as a city. I last spoke with Dante here on Midday in August.  A link to that conversation is here.  Dante Barksdale was 46 years old." -- Tom Hall, host, Midday See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Haussner’s Regret is Dan’s term for the remorse Baltimoreans feel when they realize it’s too late to do something they always meant to do but never did, or something they did once and enjoyed but never got to a second time. It is named for the once-famous, now-gone Highlandtown restaurant crammed with paintings, ceramics and sculpture that closed after 73 years in 1999. It closed fast, too, just two weeks after Mrs. Frances Haussner George announced she’d had enough. Haussner’s was overwhelmed with customers who wanted one last meal; some stood in line for three hours. Many had not dined at Haussner’s in forever, and they regretted it. On today’s show: Avoiding Haussner’s Regret with a Baltimore Bucket List — that is, an inventory of things every Baltimorean should do — or do again — before it’s too late, from hiking the full length of Charles Street to having a corned beef sandwich at Attman’s to enjoying the annual taxidermy show at the Walters Art Museum to jazz at the Caton Castle. Our discussion is occasioned by the publication of author Judy Colbert’s latest book of regional interest, “100 Things To Do In Baltimore Before You Die.”Links:http://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/dining/baltimore-diner-blog/bal-haussners-building-demolition-20160526-story.htmlhttp://articles.baltimoresun.com/2013-11-14/news/bs-md-backstory-charles-street-20131114_1_south-baltimore-baltimore-county-baltimore-museumhttp://www.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/dining/baltimore-diner-blog/bs-fo-attmans-100-years-20150328-story.htmlhttp://www.citypaper.com/news/thisweek/bcpnews-thursday-baltimore-taxidermy-open-20161004-story.htmlhttp://www.catoncastle.com/calendar.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/Judy-Colbert/e/B001HP1Z8S

That is southeastern Baltimore City — Canton, Fells Point, Highlandtown, Greektown, Little Italy, Patterson Park, Little Italy, Butcher’s Hill and other neighborhoods. The City Council member who served that district for the last 12 years is not running for re-election, so this has opened up a very competitive race with strong candidates, Democrat and Republican. In this podcast:We will hear from five Democrats — Mark Parker, Mark Edelson, Scott Goldman, Zeke Cohen and Ed Marcinko — and three Republicans — Jennifer Dudley, Matthew McDaniel and Liz Copeland. It?s easy and comfortable ride for Baltimoreans to get from Highlandtown on the east side of the harbor to Locust Point on the west. But up through the late 1940s ferry boats carried hundreds daily, from one side of the harbor to the other. And during WWII shipyard workers aboard created the first, last, and oldest establishment floating crap game in Baltimore.
