My guest on the show this week, is Sim Kern, an author whose work I came across only recently. Alongside being a published author, Sim is a content creator, using Instagram and Tik Tok as key tools in her activist life, making videos that inform, educate and empower. Sim is an anti-zionist Jew, dedicating huge amounts of time to the Palestinian liberation movement, while dismantling Israeli propaganda and narratives about the Zionist colonial project. At the time of recording, the genocidal war on Gaza has been taking place for almost 4 months, with over 30,000 people in Gaza having been killed. Over a million people have been displaced from their homes and are starving, living without clean water, shelter, healthcare, and have nowhere safe to go. Sim Kern is a Gulf Coast author and environmental journalist writing about climate change, queer identity, and social justice. Their debut horror novella, Depart, Depart!, was selected for the Honor List for the 2020 Otherwise Award. Their short story collection, Real Sugar is Hard to Find, was hailed in a starred review by Publishers Weekly as, “a searing, urgent, but still achingly tender work that will wow any reader of speculative fiction.” As a journalist, they report on petrochemical polluters and drag space billionaires. Sim's latest novel is called The Free People's Village, set in an alternative reality of 2020, where a war on climate change has been announced. You can find Sim on social media here:www.instagram.com/sim_bookstagrams_badlyhttps://www.tiktok.com/@simkernIf you enjoyed this episode, please do let me know! Dr. Sandra Morgan is joined by Alana Stott and her daughter Mollie Stott. The three discuss the importance of cyber-safety and conversations between parents and their children that will ensure cyber-safety. Alana Stott A true multi-hyphenate Alana founded and developed Wolfraven Omnimedia as a vehicle to help tell amazing and inspirational stories, including her own, while fiercely advocating for causes aimed at making the world a better place. Stott has written the game-changing business and philanthropy book, “How to Ask for Money;” her powerful memoir, “She Who Dares;” and a series of empowering children's books – all to be published in 2023. In 2018, Alana Stott raised $1.3 million dollars for a mental health awareness campaign at the request of Prince Harry and Stott's husband Dean Stott, a double world record-breaking cross-country cyclist, TV presenter and former UK Special Forces Operator. This was not her first stint in fundraising. Much like her working life, her business and philanthropic career paths started early. Alana Stott qualified as a Ship Security Officer and one of the first women to receive the Company Security Officer designation, qualifying her to run security on any vessel at sea. She is also a fully-qualified Close Protection Officer. Stott is an honorary member of The Special Boat Services Association, the UK equivalent of The Navy's Seal Team 6. She has organized multiple grand red carpet events to raise funds for injured special forces soldiers and their families. Alana was award the title of Member of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) on the King's Honor List 2023 for her work supporting vulnerable women and mental health awareness. Key Points Alana Stott wrote three children's books for the purpose of opening up different conversations to educate youth. Her book "Live Your Own Way" teaches children that it is okay to have your own adventures, and that you don't always have to do what those around you are doing. "Who to Help Today" emphasizes the little opportunities we all have to help those around us. "Me and My Friends Play" displays the beauty in childhood friendships and how barriers that often keep us from connecting, are not an issue with youth. Mollie practices cyber-safety by keeping her location services off, keeping her accounts private, and denying any follow requests from those she doesn't know. She also blocks accounts that she is concerned about, or brings her concerns to her mom, Alana. It's important for youth to be educated about cyber-safety because they can easily spot unsafe situations that their friends might be going through. By giving youth the tools to be safe online, they can help their peers to do the same. Having conversations with our youth about how to be safe online allows them to feel good about talking to parents about their concerns and feelings. BETH'S SONG by William GabrielOn Destrire, a far-flung planet at the edge of the Humanity's galactic empire, a sleepy little colony is slowly being forgotten by its imperial guardians. Life on the colony continues, as the human colonials and their new alien neighbors find ways to build a peaceful home for all. But trouble brews on the other side of the continent, thanks to a secret, centuries-old program to form a covert prison on Destrire. There, unknown by the colonists, the empire has an established a dumping ground for political prisoners. Stripped of the basic necessities, the prisoners have evolved into a barbaric frontier civilization, eager for ways to improve their quality of life—at any cost. And now that the prisoners know the location of the thriving colony, plans are made to make its resources their own. The prisoners begin a brutal series of raids on the colony, and life will never be the same. Caught in the conflict are one church-going human family and their alien friend. In a desperate attempt to reunite with her family, one woman must turn to her alien friend for support. Equally torn by the recent exposure to the horrors that humanity willingly unleashes upon its own, the aliens must now make a choice. Will this intergalactic culture clash strain existing relationships and loyalties to the breaking point? Will the brutality of the prisoners' attacks finally crush the faith and culture of the sparsely populated colony? And in the end, can the family survive—even in victory?William Gabriel was born in Los Angeles, California in 1958. He first read Asimov's Foundation trilogy when he was seventeen and started to search for methods of applying psychodynamic thought. At twenty seven he first started writing science fiction and reached the million word mark in 1998. At thirty one he tried out for and qualified as a Special Forces soldier in 1990 and spent the next decade serving on A-Teams and was a peacekeeper in Haiti in 1996. He went on to serve in B-Team and C-Team elements. He studied International Studies at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2010 and moved back to California where he graduated from the University of California at Riverside on the Chancellor's Honor List with a degree in Global Studies. After three decades of writing he published his first science fiction work in 2013. He now has three books in print: “Beth's Song”, “Twenty First Century Crusader”, and “Women in Wars of the Future”.https://books.gotopublish.com/product/beths-song/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/wmgabrielec.mp3  WOMEN IN WARS OF THE FUTURE by William GabrielFour centuries from now mankind will have expanded into the Solar System with the most adventurous and capable of society. Our world of twelve billion people will have their best and brightest reach for the planets. By this time nearly two million people will live and develop the colonies of outer space. An Earth bound power has built their first warship to ply the planets and establish hegemony where ever they travel. Earth bound politics rears its ugly head in interplanetary conflicts between this rising power and the more established national powers in space.Into this maelstrom three heroines must face off against this new menace launched from Earth. The planetary system is self sufficient, yet very fragile when confronted by military might. As civilians caught in the crossfire of political infighting, they must use all their wits and abilities to survive the presence of that warship's maiden voyage. These women prove their metal in the high stakes game of military confrontation and intrigue. Theirs is a world of mercantile uplift while they must now face the forceful onslaught of this new space power. Most technologies portrayed within this work are already developed or on the drawing board and will be part of mankind's future in space. Only a couple are not yet within our grasp, yet would be stepping stones to interstellar travel at faster than light. The three heroines each are well versed in survival in space and have carved out their own entrepreneurial niche to gain wealth and return to Earth with millions in today's currency. The planets hold near infinite wealth to be exploited in the 25th century. This is the new world in which they live.https://books.gotopublish.com/product/women-in-wars-of-the-future/TWENTY FIRST CENTURY CRUSADER by William GabrielWhat most people need to understand is that the Holy Land was in military occupation by the Romans during Christ's time. Not far from where he grew up had been a town of about 10,000 inhabitants that threw out the tax collectors, much like what happened in Falujah. The Romans responded by sending in the legion and killing every mature man, not just those that hurt the tax collectors. They then sold all women and children into slavery. So it was his teachings to tell us how to live under occupation. I lead off with the Beatitudes because of this, and then go into present day tools on how to engender peaceful resolution of situations involving conflict. I have put forth the basic building blocks of activities and messaging that can bring a society towards tranquility. As a Special Forces soldier I learned how important that cultural peace was needed for a vibrant society. For thirty years I have been developing the tools of ‘Psychodynamics' represented in Asimov's Foundation series. This work delves into the mechanics of creating a peaceful, more prosperous society. Questions of how many peacekeepers, messaging, developing culturally effective tools, and social dynamics of these differing cultures are addressed. All these facets must be organized and readied before an invasion occurs so as to have an ‘exit strategy'.Also in this work are the repercussions and calculations of social change due to migration, natural disasters, and nation state competition. New applications of the Cognitive Therapy model are developed to get into the mindset of the people of a culture. How to guide them into a more interactive element in the global environment. This is not the psychology of an individual, but of cultural movements. How did the internet take off so suddenly, or why did the economic bottom fall out from a nation's economy? The fact that societies are more prosperous when all elements (men, women, etc.) of society compete on equal footing in the job market. How do insurgencies develop? Will the subculture compete economically or pick up the rifle and fight? All these are psychodynamic questions and this work presents the building blocks to form and understand these things. So I ask you to read past the first chapter and start on the second if you are not into the Bible. This work is designed for all people so that they can formulate an effective campaign to bring about the social change they want. The first chapter shows that classical Rome was not easy to live under, much like any occupation. The second through to the end gives modern day tools to develop your own psychodynamic plan. It is in the format of an easy to read textbook. I hope and pray that it gives you insight into the opportunities that psychodynamic theory presents.https://books.gotopublish.com/product/twenty-first-century-crusader/

In our journey to uncover wartime stories from all sides during the Arab-Israeli Conflict we managed to meet Galal Abdo Hashem, an Egyptian living in his home city of Ismalia, a city that witnessed the horrors of war more than once during the 20th century. Galal Abdo Hashem is not a war veteran with military training, in fact, he never fired a single shot towards his enemies, but he decided to do something instead that gained him notoriety and his name written on Egypt's Honor List. To this day he gives lectures, speaks with journalists and appears on TV shows to speak about his experience and journey during a time when Egypt was at war with Israel. This article is the story of one of Egypt's civilians who, despite taking up arms to defend his homeland, decided there was another way to contribute to the war effort - art. My guest today aligns with my mission for authenticity and Being Human, Jeff Brown. Born in Toronto, Canada, Jeff Brown did all the things he was supposed to do to become successful in the eyes of the world. He was on the Dean's Honor List as an undergraduate. He won the Law and Medicine prize in law school. He apprenticed with top criminal lawyer Eddie Greenspan. It had been Brown's lifelong dream to practice criminal law and search for the truth in the courtroom. But then, on the verge of opening a law practice, he heard a little voice inside telling him to stop, just stop. With great difficulty, he honored this voice and began a heartfelt quest for the truth that lived within him. Although he didn't realize it at the time, Brown was actually questing for his innate image, the essential being that he came into this lifetime to embody. He was searching for his authentic face. As part of his journey, Brown surrendered to his confusion and explored many possible paths. He studied Bioenergetics and did session work with co-founder Alexander Lowen. He practiced as a body-centered psychotherapist. He completed an MA in Psychology at Saybrook Graduate School in San Francisco and co-founded the Open Heart Gang, a benevolent gang with a heartfelt intention. He started his own business and became a successful entrepreneur. In this episode we discuss: Why the inner work is the most important work that he's done  Is spiritual bypassing a necessary part of the process?  Why self-avoidance masquerading as "enlightenment" is causing people to commit suicide  Say hi on socials!

The Unheard Voices of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror panel from Arisia. Catherine Lundoff moderated this panel, with K. Tempest Bradford (standing in for Nisi Shawl), Julia Rios, Trisha Wooldridge, Andrea Hairston, and Victor Raymond. Listening to this doesn't give you the visual cues that people in the room had, so a note up front: Nisi was in the audience, but wasn't up for sitting on the panel. There was an ongoing joke about Tempest being Nisi, and about Nisi being Nalo Hopkinson, who was not at the convention. They have a website, a podcast, and many promotional and support networking opportunities for members, including organizing group readings and book sale tables at conventions. *WisCon is a feminist science fiction convention held each year at the end of May in Madison, Wisconsin. The Carl Brandon Society and Broad Universe both have strong presences there. *Con or Bust is an organization that raises money to send fans of color to conventions. The Carl Brandon Society administers the funds. *Gaylaxicon and Outlantacon are conventions specifically for the QUILTBAG SF fandom community. Gaylaxicon is a roving con (like WorldCon), and Outlantacon happens each year in May in Atlanta. This year's Gaylaxicon will be hosted by Outlantacon.Work by people on the panel:*Filter House is Nisi Shawl's Tiptree Award Winning short story collection (Tempest joked that her collection would be called Filter House 2).*Redwood and Wildfire is Andrea Hairston's Tiptree Award Winning novel (for which she had also just received a Carl Brandon Award on the day of this panel).*Silver Moon is Catherine Lundoff's novel about menopausal werewolves*Catherine writes a series about LGBT SFF for SF Signal.*Julia is an editor for Strange Horizons, which is always interested in publishing diverse voices.*Kaleidoscope is an anthology of diverse YA SF and Fantasy stories Julia is co-editing with Alisa Krasnostein, which is scheduled to launch in August of 2014.*In Other Words is an anthology of poetry and flash by writers of color Julia is co-editing with Saira Ali, which is scheduled to launch at WisCon in May, and which will benefit Con or Bust.Other things mentioned: *Lorraine Hansberry was an African American lesbian playwright, best known for Raisin in the Sun, but Andrea pointed out that she also wrote a lot of science fiction plays. *The SFWA Bulletin incited a lot of pushback in 2013. Here is a timeline: http://www.slhuang.com/blog/2013/07/02/a-timeline-of-the-2013-sfwa-controversies/. It has since changed editorial staff and has just put out the first of the new team's issues, which seems to be a lot more favorably received, as evidenced here: http://www.jasonsanford.com/jason/2014/03/the-new-sfwa-bulletin-is-blowing-my-mind.html.*"The Serial Killer's Astronaut Daughter" by Damien Angelica Walters was written partly in response to the SFWA bulletin's sexism. *A Stranger in Olondria by Sofia Samatar came up as an example of a novel by a person of color put out through an independent (not one of the big New York houses--Andrea argued for calling these sorts of publishers independent rather than small) publisher, Small Beer Press. Since the panel, A Stranger in Olondria has won the Crawford Award and been nominated for the Nebula. *Crossed Genres, Twelfth Planet Press, and Papaveria Press are independent presses that publish diverse voices.*Clarkesworld, Lightspeed, Strange Horizons, and Apex are magazines Tempest sees publishing diverse stories. Tor.com is also publishing more diverse stories now, like "The Water That Falls on You From Nowhere" by John Chu. *The Tiptree Award celebrates work that expands our notions of gender.*Dark Matter is an anthology exploring a century of SF by black writers. *Blood Children was an anthology put out by the Carl Brandon Society in 213 to benefit the Octavia Butler Scholarship, which sends students of color to Clarion. *Bending the Landscape, Kindred Spirits, and Worlds Apart were brought up as examples of QUILTBAG anthologies from more than just a few years back. All of these were mentioned as early examples, but the panel agreed we need more. *Daughters of Earth is a collection of stories by women from the early 1900s to 2000 with accompanying critical essays. This collection is edited by Justine Larbalestier. Andrea wrote a critical essay about an Octavia Butler story in this book. *The Cascadia Subduction Zone has a feature where an established writer recommends and reviews an older work that might be obscure. Andrea and Nisi have both done this. *Lethe Press publishes best gay SF stories each year in Wilde Stories, and best lesbian SF stories each year in Heiresses of Russ. Nisi and Julia are both in Heiresses of Russ 2013.*From the audience, Saira Ali recommends Goblin Fruit and Stone Telling as diverse poetry magazines, and Aliens: Recent Encounters (edited by Alex Dally MacFarlane) as a good anthology.
