We've got a treat for you all this week: Ambassador De Pluski's back on the pod. He joined Luke, who was fresh home from the Amstel Gold Race, where... well, where he got lost. Long story. In one of the most dramatic Classics of the season, Pog didn't win. Remco didn't win. But Matthias Skjelmose did. Chapeau, Sir. Next up for both Luke (in the car) and De Pluski (on the bike) is Liege-Bastogne-Liege this Sunday. Will it be Pogi vs Remco again? Or will De Pluski pull off a wild long-range attack of his own? Who knows. Maybe if he fuels with the Luke Rowe sandwich, he'll be fine. (You'll have to listen for that one to make sense.) G will be back next week. See you then. Want to try NordVPN? Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP This week on Life in the Peloton we have a dead set legend of a guest, Geraint Thomas might be a Tour de France winner, but the Welshman is also, so, so much more. These days you could think of him as a Grand Tour guy, but ‘G' has not only had an incredible career, but an amazingly varied one. He went from being a young Olympic trackie, to a (very good) Classics rider by the time he was in his mid-twenties, finishing in the top ten at Flanders in his second attempt at the race. But while, like me, he is a passionate classics man, unlike me, he has also had the energy and skills to win almost every major stage race going, including of course the Tour de France! We've seen him do some amazing things on the bike, not just winning for himself on all sorts of terrain - he's won at E3 and on Alp d'Huez… but also pulling some truly exceptional leadouts for others, doing things in the bunch the rest of us could only dream of. Most recently, we've seen those measured efforts that keep him right at the pointy end of racing in the world of modern cycling, scoring two Giro podiums in the last couple of seasons. I loved the chance to speak to someone who has had such an incredible career, and has adapted to the changes in the sport over such a length of time. His story is exceptional for his longevity and also his ability to adapt and just get on with things in his own - pretty cool, style. To top things off G also has his own Watts Occurring podcast with Luke Rowe, and he's handy at that too, which meant he was a great guest. This really is a bumper pod, and I am stoked to bring it out for you all this week. Cheers! Mitch   The Life in the Peloton book is OUT NOW! Get your copy now exclusively at maap.cc! 1 January, 2012. The day that Luke Rowe became a professional bike rider, pulling on the immortal colours of Team Sky for the first time. 13 years later, after a career that he dreamt of as a young Maindy Flyer, growing up in Cardiff and riding round the famous outdoor velodrome, Luke's decided to hang up his pro wheels at the end of this season. What a journey it's been. He sat down with G this week to bring you, our Watts Occurring listeners, the news first. It's not been an easy decision. Following his crash and concussion in E3 back in March, regular listeners will know that Luke's recovery hasn't been as speedy as expected. As he explains, following medical advice and long discussions with his young family, Luke has decided that this season will be his last. He still hopes to race this season - did someone say Tour of Britain? - but will need to see how his recovery progresses. It was commissioned by the production company behind Channel 4's coverage of the Tour de France in the 1980s and was used as the theme music for the nightly highlights show. I grew up watching those highlights and the music became part of my childhood. When I set out to create Life in the Peloton I knew that theme song was what would set the scene and capture the essence of Life in the Peloton. Pete died in December 2018. We were given permission by Pete's widow and his manager to continue using the music for the theme tune to Life in the Peloton. Rapha presents Life in the Peloton! Well, here we are, it's the last pod of the year and I've got a bumper one for you! As you'll know the UCI World Road Race Championships were held in Australia this year, and I made the 1,250km trip from my home in Lancefield, near Melbourne, to the race in Wollongong by bike, and I documented the trip for the pod.  I gave myself five days for the trip, which meant I was doing big days on the bike, but without any ridiculous pressure, and it turned out to be an amazing pilgrimage through my own backyard here in Australia.   Australia is a huge country that I've been away from for my whole career. I'd never ridden this route before, so I based my plans around staying and visiting some well-known pub stops and trying to catch up with other cyclists and friends, and anyone else I could find to have a cleansing ale and a chin wag with along the way.  Sure, the riding got hard at times, but it really was an incredible experience to meet so many people, soak up the culture, and discover communities in Australia that I've never had the chance to meet before.  I've got so many of these amazing characters on the pod, from keen cyclists to landlords wondering what the mad guy in pink lycra was doing in their pub! I spoke to locals who were bike racers, and to locals who had no idea what the Cycling World Championships were, let alone who Wout Van Aert was. Overall it was an amazing experience. I had a blast in Australia, and I learned a lot about local cycling cultures and everything else along the way. I loved the time on the bike, both alone and with the company I picked up on the route, and I hope that comes across in the pod.  I also hope that it can even inspire you guys to go and plan a trip yourselves. Remember, it doesn't need to be epic or for the fastest known time, it can be whatever you want; just get out there and do your own fun trips; have fun on the bike, visit some pubs (of course), meet great people and get out and ride! I want to say a big thanks to everyone who met me out on the road, gave me a tow, a beer or stopped to chat. Thanks to Tim, Gene, Pykey, Neil, Tom, Jordan, Chris and Stu, Tas, Ryan, Avie, Matilda, Lila and Lou, Kelly, Tom, Hans & Malia, Ben, Jay & Randy, Greg, Jamie, Murray, Shane, Kev & Erin, Gavin, Sam & Talia, Dave, Dan, Chris, Kirk, Tom, Sinna, Frano & the whole Rapha Cycle Club peloton. To hear more about the music, listen to the Andre Greipel episode of Life in the Peloton.

The 2021 Tour de France has ended for Peter Sagan, and it was kind of a bummer for the Slovakian champ. On today's podcast we discuss Peter Sagan's 2021 Tour, and discuss what it means in the larger context of his late-stage career. Plus, there are reports linking Sagan to French team TotalEnergies, and we discuss what a move would mean for Sagan at this point in his career. Then, we delve into some of the GC stories to come out of stage 11 to Mont Ventoux, including the rise of Jonas Vingegaard. Who is Vingegaard, and what's up with the stories we've heard of him working in a fish factory? In the second half of the show we hear from American rider Sepp Kuss on Jumbo-Visma's big day on Ventoux. We also hear from Luke Rowe of Ineos Grenadiers, who had to abandon the Tour.

Brad and Graham Willgoss look back on Stage 12 of the Tour de France into Nîmes, when Bora-Hansgrohe's Nils Politt attacked off the front of the break to take a solo win on the day that Peter Sagan dropped out of the race. The attack, says Brad from his vantage point on the motorbike following the action, was a little bit cheeky. "Julian Alaphilippe was at his team car getting bottles and I was next to the Bora Hansgrohe car," he says. "And it was 'Go go go go go!'"But was it in the spirit of the game? "Somebody had to start attacking," says Brad. "Politt picked his moment, and he went. Sagan going home this morning liberated the team. They've had a tough Tour up until now, and they're chasing a lot... The strongest man won today." Looking ahead to another potential stage for the fast men, the pair could not avoid talking about Mark Cavendish, on 33 Tour stage victories – one shy of the all-time benchmark."Does Cav chase the record?" asks Brad. "And what's more important: winning a green jersey and winning three stages, or going for Eddy Merckx's record and potentially losing the green jersey? He's got time. That will pan out early in the morning."Elsewhere, Brad praises "class act" Luke Rowe after the Team Ineos man missed the time cut on Stage 11: "He's the first name you'd have on any Tour de France startlist. He's in the same mould as G. They're hard men, they don't give in lightly. And it's a shame to see that man leave the race."Brought to you by Zwift, where fun is fast. The Bradley Wiggins Show is produced by Pete Burton. Wiggins also doubled down on saying that Ineos Grenadiers are favourites to win all three Grand Tours with Bernal looking strong for the Giro and Vuelta as well as having both Geraint Thomas and Tao Geoghegan Hart at the Tour de France. The latest episode of the Cyclingnews podcast was going to be based around Matteo Trentin and his win on stage 17 of the Tour de France but then Tony Martin and Luke Rowe decided to steal the limelight by having an altercation on the final climb of the stage. The result of which was a disqualification for both riders after Martin tried to run Rowe off the road and the Ineos rider decided to retaliate by providing Martin with a close-up inspection of his right hand. The UCI regulators didn't take to kindly and booted both riders out of the race.  There was a joint video from Rowe and Martin in which they apologized but unless the UCI overturn their decision - and that's unlikely - both Ineos and Jumbo Visma will start stage 18 with a man less. This evening the Cyclingnews team headed straight to the Team Ineos hotel to soak up the atmosphere and try and talk to the riders and staff. The latter proved impossible but we debate the race rules, ask if Team Ineos have a discipline problem and discuss how the loss of two key riders effects the race going forward.  Don't forget you can win a signed EF-Education First jersey from this year's Tour de France. With the cobbled stage looming the Tour de France peloton rolled through the countryside from Dreux to Amiens waiting for the inevitable sprint finish. For the second day in a row, Dutch sprinter Dylan Groenewegen won the stage in decisive style. Fernando Gaviria and Andre Greipel, who crossed the line in second and third were later relegated to last in the results for illegal moves – Greipel for squeezing Gaviria towards the barriers and Gaviria for nudging back with his head a couple of times. We discuss whether the decision was right. With it being Bastille Day, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and François Thomazeau experienced the Tour as tens of thousands did – on the roadside. We also hear from Cedric Vasseur, the boss of the French Cofidis team who have gone ten years without a Tour stage, and, as he prepares to face the cobbled stage, from Luke Rowe about his remarkable comeback from injury after breaking his leg in several places following an accident on his brother’s stag do last year. (1:25:00 - 1:45:16).   SÍGUENOS EN: iTunes: El Maillot iVoox: El Maillot Twitter: @ElMaillot_ Facebook: @ElMaillotOficial Instagram: @elmaillot YouTube: El Maillot

April 4 | In this episode of The Cycling Podcast, Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe discuss Niki Terpstra's victory at the Tour of Flanders and ask whether it was a vintage edition of the race. Daniel offers his patented wine glass rating, Lionel bemoans the fact Quick Step's rivals were able to do so little to upset the apple cart and Richard suggests that Bora made a tactical error at a crucial part of the race that played into the Belgian team's hands.
