Today's guest is Aaron Kunin, Professor of English at Pomona College. We will discuss two books Aaron published in 2019: the first is Character as Form (Bloomsbury), a re-examination of the early modern understanding of “character” as stereotype, generalization, and convention. In Character as Form, Aaron braids together close readings of furniture in Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine, a reflection on the concept of negative anthropology from Raul Ruiz's Three Lives and Only One Death, and insight into formalism and anti-formalist views of fictive personhood. The second we discuss is Love Three: A Study of a Poem by George Herbert (Wave Books), a “reading diary” that takes a seventeenth-century poem as a springboard for a meditation on love, sexual experience, and power. Herbert's poem is a fraught dialogue between a speaker and Love, which is unfolded to touch on the politics of eating, the allure of rhetorical power, and the nature of crowds. Aaron's research focuses on English Renaissance literature. In addition to his scholarship, he is the author of five books, including Cold Genius: A Book of Poems (2014), The Mandarin (2008), and Folding Ruler Star: Poems (2005), all from Fence Books. John Yargo is Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Boston College. He earned a PhD in English literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in the environmental humanities and early modern culture. In 2023, his dissertation won the J. Leeds Barroll Prize, given by the Shakespeare Association of America. His peer-reviewed articles have been published or are forthcoming in the Journal for Early Modern Culture Studies, Early Theatre, Studies in Philology, and Shakespeare Studies. In the Mood for Chaos: A Riverdale Roasting and Recap Podcast
Poor FP had a lot more to worry about in season 1 than we thought. Where's a serpent to purge all these anxieties but the ever-available shoulder to cry on called a diary? He's a tough guy, whose dealt with tough things...but Riverdale has a way of bringing people to new lows and FP is no exception. Even with a whole biker gang on his side, there's only so much he can do when up against the likes of the Blossoms. He's also got to deal with having Jughead as a kid and that's difficult enough as it is. Written and recorded by: Evelyn (Who manages to neatly sum up a ridiculous plot thread or two IN CHARACTER better than Riverdale does) Content Warnings: - Alcohol (beer, brief mention) - Blackmail/extortion - Death - Murder Music: 'Imps' by Mark Revell 'Blood Money' by David Fesliyan - via Fesliyan Studios

Long-time journalist and host of National Public Radio's All Things Considered Robert Siegel retired last week. Robert was the man who first brought the Reduced Shakespeare Company on to the NPR airwaves in 1994 and introduced us to the largest American audience we'd ever had up to that point. To celebrate his retirement, we offer the very first interview we did with Robert on All Things Considered, from June 23, 1994, during which we talk about and perform excerpts from The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), followed by our second interview with Robert, from July 31, 1995, in which we discuss and perform bits from what was then our brand-new show The Bible: The Complete Word of God (abridged). Featuring impossibly young voices, zippy tempos, wobbly-sounding keyboards, brief excerpts from our BBC World Service program The Reduced Shakespeare Radio Show, unaired outtakes from a piece we produced for NPR's "In Character" series, and gratitude to a great journalist, network-builder, and friend. #ThanksRobert (Length 27:07)

The Killing Game, Part II Commentary. Star Trek two-part episodes tend to be known for a strong first half and weak conclusion. That is not the case when it comes to "The Killing Game," the second two-parter of Voyager Season Four. Despite starting with only a quarter of an hour of material for the second half, the writers pulled this one together with a nice mix of drama, humor, social commentary, and a controversial conclusion that led to repercussions later in the series. Char and Tristan conclude their commentary of "The Killing Game" in this episode of To The Journey. Topics discussed touch on which side of the resistance they'd want to be on, Tommy's lexicon, what Jeri Ryan was contemplating on the rainy set, and Ethan Phillips' survival of Talaxian *and* Klingon makeup. According to a longstanding tradition in ethical theory, the primary subject of moral evaluation is the person, or, more specifically, the person's character. Aristotle stands at the head of this tradition, and he held that moral theory must take as its center a theory of the good man; he hence devised an elaborate conception of the virtues–those dispositions and traits constitutive of the good life for human beings. Virtue ethics thrives to this day. In fact, virtue theorizing has been applied to other normative domains, including especially epistemology. In Character as Moral Fiction (Cambridge University Press, 2013), Mark Alfano investigates the ways in which virtue ethics and epistemology are affected by recent results from behavioral sciences that call into question the idea that humans sustain stable and robust character traits. Drawing on a range of empirical data, Alfano suggests a reinterpretation of the virtues. Rather than seeing them as steady and fixed dispositions to act across a broad range of situations, Alfano argues that virtue attributions be seen more as self-fulfilling prophecies: when we properly attribute courage to a person, we heighten her tendency to behave in courageous ways. Alfano then extends this account to the intellectual virtues discussed by virtue epistemologists.
According to a longstanding tradition in ethical theory, the primary subject of moral evaluation is the person, or, more specifically, the person’s character.
