Known for his gripping narratives that bring history to life, author and historian Ben Macintyre's latest work is centred around the 1980 hostage situation at the Iranian Embassy in London.
In this episode, Tom and Simon engage in a dynamic conversation spanning continents and intriguing topics. Simon begins by sharing his unexpected gym visit in Malaysia, a stark contrast to Tom's chilly day in Scotland. The discussion shifts to Tom's upcoming book, 'The Bombing of Edinburgh and Leith, 1939-1942,' exploring historical crime scene photography and justice. They delve into the clever, yet ultimately flawed, 1973 casino scam in France, reflecting on the enduring appeal of sophisticated criminal schemes. The notorious activities of Arthur Thompson, a violent Glasgow criminal, spark a candid discussion on police informants and media glorification of criminals. They compare Thompson's operations to the infamous Kray twins, highlighting the complex relationships between criminals and law enforcement. The episode also revisits the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege, shedding light on the SAS's public debut and the political courage of Margaret Thatcher. The conversation takes a somber turn with the unresolved Templeton Woods murders in Dundee, emphasizing the distinct differences between the victims and the investigative challenges faced. Finally, they touch on the tragic miscarriage of justice in the Bay Village murder, paralleling it with popular culture representations. Throughout, Tom and Simon examine how power, greed, and the press influence criminal dynamics and law enforcement responses. This episode is a compelling mix of firsthand accounts, historical insights, and thoughtful analyses, perfect for true crime aficionados.00:00 Introduction and Greetings00:18 Simon's Gym Surprise01:04 Tom's New Book Announcement03:13 Deep Dive into Casino Crimes07:56 FBI Office Break-In17:20 Arthur Thompson Senior and Glasgow Crime24:45 The Ruthless Nature of Ferris and Thompson26:30 Historical Parallels: Percy Sillitoe and Gang Violence27:17 Proportional Force in Police Raids29:25 The Bay Village Murder Case33:35 The Iranian Embassy Siege40:44 Templeton Woods Murders and Operation Trinity48:27 The World's End Murders and Angus Sinclair Hosted on Acast. In this episode of Crime Time, Inc., we journey back to April 1980 in London, where six armed men from the Democratic Revolutionary Front for the Liberation of Arabistan stormed the Iranian Embassy, taking 26 hostages. Hostage-taker leader Saleem, intelligent and articulate, exemplifies the complexity of the assailants demanding autonomy for Iran's Khuzestan province. The siege, lasting six days, saw intricate negotiations and intense preparation by the SAS. The situation escalated when Saleem killed a defiant hostage, triggering the SAS to launch Operation Nimrod. The raid involved precise, simultaneous assaults from all angles, showcasing the SAS's expertise. During the chaos, PC Trevor Locke, who had hidden his weapon, managed to subdue Saleem, preventing further bloodshed. Despite the hostages' fear, most were rescued, though tragically two were lost. The Iranian Embassy siege dramatically altered global counterterrorism approaches, highlighting the crucial role of specialized, well-prepared units in responding to terrorism. The episode underscores the bravery of individuals and the strategic gains in counterterrorism, offering a gripping narrative that resonates with the complexities of resilience and adaptation in facing threats.00:00 Introduction to the Iranian Embassy Siege00:48 Hostage Takers and Their Demands01:58 PC Trevor Locke's Daring Actions02:55 The SAS Prepares for Action03:59 Operation Nimrod: The Raid Begins08:45 The Aftermath and Impact on Counterterrorism10:46 Conclusion and Reflections Hosted on Acast. A Fan-Favorite Reprise Episode From Season One:Prior to May 5, 1980, the world was largely unaware that the UK's SAS (Special Air Service), or any elite special operations units, existed at all. Six days earlier, terrorists had stormed the Iranian Embassy in London and taken 21 hostages. As the situation was being covered on live TV around the world, the SAS attacked the embassy. HBH is honored to be joined by two members of that elite SAS team, Pete Winner and Sekonaia ‘Tak' Takevisi. The terrorists had not anticipated a violent response to their actions. However, what they received when UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher gave ‘Operation Nimrod' the go ahead, was the full force of the most precise military instrument at her disposal: the SAS. The SAS made an example of the terrorists for all the world to see. As a result, overnight, the SAS, also known as ‘The Regiment', became famous around the world - a world that did not know soldiers of this caliber existed. We thank Pete and Tak for taking the time to join us and reliving their experience from the day that put special forces on the map, permanently. Pete Winner is the author of his bestselling memoir ‘SOLDIER, I', which he wrote with Michael Kennedy.
On the 30th April 1980 six armed Kuzhestanis burst into the Iranian Embassy at no.16 Prince's Gate, in the smart London neighbourhood of Kensington. So began a six day siege that ended in dramatic scenes, broadcast on live TV, as members of the SAS smashed their way into the British consciousness, and the building, bringing to an end the terrorist attack in a ruthlessly executed operation. Joining me is bestselling author Ben Macintyre as we discuss Operation Nimrod, the SAS, the hostages and the significance of the event to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The Hidden Girl by Lucinda Riley. This was, in fact, her very first book written under another name and never made available here in New Zealand. Her son Harry Whitaker, with whom she had a long standing creative partnership, has edited it and given it a whole new life. It's classic Lucinda Riley and her thousands of fans will be thrilled. It's an epic multi-generational saga which moves from Europe in WW2 to the streets of New York - very typical of the kinds of stories she's so loved for. The Siege by Ben McIntyre. An account of the 1980 siege of the Iranian Embassy in London when 6 terrorists took 26 hostages inside the building in a dispute which raged on for more than 6 days. The SAS were eventually called in and stormed the building by abseiling down from the roof and in through the windows and killed five of the terrorists and managed to rescue most - but not all - of the hostages. It was remarkable because it was the first time the SAS's skills had ever been on such public display and the whole thing was televised and broadcast around the world. In May 1980, TV coverage of the world snooker final was interrupted by live footage of men in black balaclavas abseiling down the walls of the Iranian Embassy in London. This was Operation Nimrod, a daring SAS plan to free dozens of hostages who'd been held captive in the building for almost a week by a group of gunmen. In his new book, bestselling author Ben Macintyre tells the story of the Iranian Embassy siege, from its roots in the Middle East to its incredibly dramatic conclusion. He spoke to Rob Attar about this defining event of Margaret Thatcher's premiership. Israel whomps the unholy hell out of the Gaza Strip. Iran thinks that's no bueno, arms Hezbollah. Israel says, “Oh, F-you,” and bombs the Iranian Embassy in Syria, killing one of Iran's biggest douchebags, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, and other Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders… and now, Iran has launched a drone attack on Israel. What's next? I suppose that's what we're about to find out… —I wish, I wish, I wish I could find a legitimate source for this next story. According to Reddit—noted home of QAnon and various other wonderful conspiracies—a Christian woman who believed the eclipse was a sign the rapture was upon us, went to a restaurant and tipped generously. And not “50%” generously, several hundred dollars on a $40 bill generous. Aaaaaand, when the rapture didn't happen, again, she went returned and demanded her money back. Because of course she did. —Italy: come for the pasta, stay for the murder. Amanda Knox was in the news again, so nathan did a little digging… Did you know that Rudy Guede, the man who actually murdered Meredith Kercher, only got a 30-year prison sentence? Even better, he was released early, to finish his sentence doing community service. Seems they're kinda light on crime there. Meanwhile, over in Vietnam, Truong My Lan was sentenced to death for a white collar crime. Man, God bless Vietnam! Imagine if the U.S.A. had put to death all the douchenozzles behind the economic collapse in 2008? (Or, for that matter, any economic collapse.) —Oh, Catholicism… your numbers are shrinking, and every time people are asked why they've left the church, they say, “It's 2024. People are gay. Get over it.” So, what did the church just do? Double down on their anti-LGBTQ rhetoric. But wait, there's more! They've added surrogacy to the list! Yes, if there's one thing women love, it's being told what they can and cannot do with their bodies. —TikTok: it's where stupid people go to “learn.” Well, anti-diet influencers started telling people to listen to their gut when it came to diet. Eat right and exercise? That's for losers. Your body will tell you what you're supposed to eat, and if it's telling you candy bars and donuts? More power to ya! Oh, and by the way, the food industry is backing these influencers, and you're gonna gain weight and get fat if you listen to them. Who could have seen this coming? //The Wire Weekly Rollup//April 7-13, 2024//-----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: Tensions remain high in anticipation of the Iranian response to the Israeli strike on the Iranian Embassy in Damascus. The timing for such retaliatory actions is not known, though Israeli forces have been warning of a potential imminent ballistic missile attack for about a week. American forces throughout the region have also been maneuvered into more strategic positions, probably to attempt the interception of Iranian ballistic missiles when the attack does occur. As the world awaits the latest escalation of the conflict, Iran seized a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz this week. The M/V MSC ARIES was seized while attempting to transit the maritime chokepoint, signaling a potential escalation of the conflict with regards to maritime targeting. AC: Though the hijacking of commercial shipping is very commonly conducted by Iranian forces, the ships normally hijacked are oil tankers, which are targeted for financial reasons. The seizure of a container ship is new, and may signal a change in Iranian policy with regards to the Strait of Hormuz waterway.-HomeFront-USA: The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to renew Section 702 of FISA. The bill now heads to the Senate, where it is expected to pass.New York: The M/V APL QINGDAO lost propulsion while transiting the Kill Van Kull waterway at approximately 08:30 pm Sunday evening. The QINGDAO lost power just north of the Verrazzano Bridge, but tugboats were able to bring the vessel under control before any damage occurred.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Though the actions of American politicians in Congress are not surprising, the public nature of the corruption and obvious bribery/blackmail surrounding the renewal of Section 702 is quite concerning. The lack of any concern whatsoever about the perception of corruption strongly indicates that very little rule of law remains a part of the American political system, with factional allegiance, interest groups, blackmail, and open bribery being the primary means by which policy is conducted, publicly. For instance, many Congressmen report that AG Garland personally called them to pressure elected officials to vote for the renewal. Likewise, Speaker Johnson himself was against the renewal at first, but immediately became one of its most ardent defenders following one single “intelligence briefing”. The truth of the matter is blatantly clear; federal agencies are strong-arming Congressmen openly and publicly instead of behind closed doors as was customary in the past.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//
Iran has vowed to take revenge on Israel for killing its commanders, who were hit earlier this month during a strike on the Iranian embassy in Damascus. For reaction to this, Cormac was joined studio by Kazem Sharif Kazemi, Chargé d'affaires of the Iranian Embassy to Ireland
//The Wire//1930Z April 9, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: TENSIONS REMAIN IN THE MIDDLE EAST FOLLOWING MULTIPLE INCIDENTS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: Following the events surrounding the targeting of the Iranian Embassy compound in Damascus, tensions remain throughout the region in many respects. Tensions in Gaza remain elevated as Israeli strikes continue and the invasion of Rafah enters the final planning steps. Of note, Israeli forces have withdrawn from Gaza substantially, possibly to allocate forces for the invasion of Rafah, and possibly to prevent becoming overstretched in the North as an additional front opens up in the South. Conversely, as Ramadan draws to an end, an increase in targeting is expected (and has been announced) by Hamas and Hezbollah, with uncertain levels of confidence in their ability to make good on their threats. AC: Most American pundits have also threatened an increased likelihood that Iran will directly attack the United States in response to the Iranian Embassy strike. Though U.S. bases in Syria will almost certainly receive increased levels of indirect fire attacks, diplomatically, a larger more direct attack on the U.S. makes little sense in this specific instance. From the Iranian perspective, Israel is the nation that directly attacked them, so Israel shall be the target, purely out of the desire to save face in the international community. As to what the Iranian response will be, ballistic missile attacks are the most logical attack vector, but anything goes at this point.-HomeFront-Idaho: Saturday afternoon the FBI arrested Alexander Mercurio at his parent's house after he allegedly planned to provide materiel support to ISIS. He had allegedly been a part of various online communities supportive of ISIS, and had allegedly been planning to conduct an attack at a church.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: In the raid on Mercurio's home, no evidence indicating an imminent threat was found. However, several of his father's firearms (which were stored in a locked closet) were seized. According to the criminal complaint, Mercurio had been under surveillance for almost two years. As he is currently 18 years old, this means that he was under federal surveillance since he was a minor. As a result, it is difficult to determine if this case was a legitimate case of potential terrorism. Considering the current trends involving similar cases, much discernment is called for when examining the particulars of this case, and how the entire situation began in the first place. It is remarkable how many cases arise when an underage individual (usually with some sort of mental disability, though that is not clear in this specific case), attempts to engage in illegal activity online, and on their very first try always end up communicating directly with a federal informant.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//
//The Wire Weekly Rollup//March 31 – April 6, 2024//-----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Syria: Sunday night, Israeli forces struck a building immediately adjacent to the Iranian Embassy in Damascus. The Iranian Embassy proper was damaged in the strike, and further investigation of the strike location indicates the building was an annex of the official Embassy and located within the confines of the Embassy compound (and thus within the area of Iranian diplomatic protection). Three Iranian generals were killed in the strike, along with a few staff officers.Taiwan: Several earthquakes struck the island Monday night, causing widespread damage. The most substantial earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.2, the largest recorded earthquake to strike the nation since 1999. So far, the official death toll is 13 fatalities, though this number may rise as many still-missing persons become accounted for.Belgium: During the NATO summit in Brussels, U.S. SECSTATE Blinken stated definitively that Ukraine will join NATO. AC: A timeline for this event was not given, nor were any details provided as to how this will happen as this seems to be a technical impossibility (for many reasons) at present.-HomeFront-Tennessee: An arson incident occurred at the Global Vision Bible Church in Wilson County at around 6:00 am Easter Sunday. A metal trailer filled with Holy Bibles was set on fire outside the front entrance of the church. Local authorities confirm the incident was intentional and no arrests have been made, despite security footage capturing the license plate of the vehicle that dropped off the trailer.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Regarding the Iranian Embassy strike, confusion continues as to mere centimeters of ground regarding the exact survey points of a compound in Damascus. However, as with nearly all Israeli airstrikes, what is absolutely clear is that the strike was conducted within the bounds of what is normally considered in the kinetic targeting community to be a CAT 1 No-Strike Entity (NSE). Additionally, the Collateral Damage Estimation (CDE) analysis of the potential Civilian Casualties (CIVCAS) caused by the chosen munitions without question confirm that, had it been carried out under U.S. regulations set forth in U.S. military law (and in Joint Publication 3-60), this strike would have been illegal. In any case, the diplomatic implications are quite severe, regardless of a few centimeters difference of diplomatic soil. If Israel had struck these generals as they stood on the sidewalk in front of the Embassy compound, the diplomatic impact would be virtually the same; worsening relations among two nations who already suffer from intense rivalry and vastly competing interests.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

We begin with the concerning report of a dairy worker in Texas diagnosed with avian influenza, stirring conversations about the feared "Disease X." We then move to the international scene, discussing the significant Israeli airstrike on the Iranian Embassy in Syria, which resulted in numerous casualties, including high-ranking military officials, and why this event demands our attention. Closer to home, Germany's new citizenship screening aimed at identifying anti-Semitic sentiments among migrants sparks a conversation on its relevance to the United States. We also spotlight the domestic issue of illegal migration, with buses transporting undocumented immigrants to a small Kansas town, spotlighting the challenges small communities face with sudden demographic shifts. Later in the episode, Bryan addresses two varied listener questions: President Joe Biden's Easter proclamation regarding transgender rights and the intricacies of tracking America's cattle, illustrating the wide range of concerns and curiosities amongst our listeners.

World Central Kitchen (WCK), one of the few aid groups distributing food in Gaza, has suspended its work there, along with others. The move comes on the heels of an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) strike that killed seven WCK workers after they left a warehouse in two armored cars. And, Israel's airstrikes on WCK workers and the Iranian Embassy annex in Syria are drawing criticism from the international community over a potential violation of the rules of war. We hear how the IDF selects its targets and whether its standards over civilian protections may have changed. //The Wire//2000Z April 2, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: ISRAELI STRIKE IN DAMASCUS KILLS THREE IRANIAN GENERALS. COLORADO BILL TO GRANT ILLEGALS IDENTITY DOCUMENTS ADVANCES.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Syria: Last night Israeli forces struck a building immediately adjacent to the Iranian Embassy in Damascus. The main structure of the Iranian Embassy was partially damaged in the strike, while the building adjacent was demolished, killing three Iranian generals and several other military leaders/advisors. AC: Iran claims the building was a diplomatic wing of their Embassy compound, whereas Israel claims it was a commercial building. Though this detail is extremely important, independent verification is challenging due to the highly dense urban terrain. Of note, the former Canadian Embassy is also next door to the struck compound (Canada having ceased its diplomatic mission in Syria during the war). In any case, this is undoubtedly a strong escalation in an already very tense conflict.-HomeFront-USA: Emerging court documents that are part of an anti-trust lawsuit allege that Meta/Facebook not only has access to allegedly encrypted private messages, but also sold users' private messages to Netflix as part of a data sharing agreement. AC: Though the exact details of these latest allegations are not possibly verifiable without a forensic audit of Facebook's systems, Facebook was designed from the ground up to be an intelligence collection platform, as overwhelmingly indicated by hundreds of leaks, whistleblower testimonies, and governmental spying scandals over the years.Colorado: The Colorado Road and Community Safety Act (SB24-182) has passed the Senate judiciary committee and has been forwarded to appropriations. AC: The only function of this three-page bill, despite it's name, is to allow illegal immigrants to obtain a Colorado driver's license. The bill as it currently stands also does not require illegals to be residents of Colorado to obtain a driver's license. Though this seems very common among many states at this point, it is important to remember that Colorado also recently implemented their Automatic Voter Registration system, which automatically registers all persons who obtain a driver's license to vote.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: It is unclear as to what potential fine-print is contained in Colorado's SB24-182 as it pertains to other existing laws. The text of the bill is clear enough, but as almost all laws contradict other laws and the Constitution itself, it's almost certain that this bill will contradict existing legal precedent on the matter. Common sense would dictate that surely a driver's license law cannot overrule Constitutional rights. However, in all 50 states citizens are finding out that when the rubber meets the road, the text of a law doesn't really matter in practice. From an information warfare perspective, the intent is clear. First create the automatic voter registration system, then change the definitions of who the law applies to. Changing definitions and requirements is a classing hallmark of mission-creep, and if passed, it would be prudent to assume that this would at minimum move the goalposts when it comes to voting rights in Colorado.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

I and many other people in the productivity world talk a lot about planning your day. However, what happens when your plans are frequently destroyed by other people? A podcast to answer all your questions about productivity, time management, self-development and goal planning. My name is Carl Pullein, and I am your host of this show. As the Scottish poet Robert Burns once wrote “The best-laid schemes of mice and men gang aft agley”. “Gang aft agley” can be translated as go awry. This means that no matter how well you plan your day or week, things are not going to go according to plan. Similarly, one of my favourite quotes that is often attributed to Mike Tyson is, “Everyone has a plan until they are punched in the face.” And it's so true. One of the reasons so few people actually do a daily or weekly plan is because they believe that no matter what they plan, it is going to be torpedoed once they begin the day. A simple text message or email can derail the whole day. Yet, I still believe it is important to have a plan. Without a plan, you will be waiting for others to give you something to do. You will feel lost and never get anything important to you done, and you are guaranteed to build horrendous backlogs. This leads me to this week's question, and for that, it means it's time to hand you over to the Mystery Podcast Voice. This week's question comes from Sasha. Sasha asks, Hi Carl, what tips do you have for me to harden my system so that it doesn't constantly wobble when life experiences significant deviations outside of the planned week? Hi Sasha, thank you for your question. Now, I know there is a little more background to your question. Specifically, managing two young children and both yourself and your wife working full time. So with that in mind the first problem people face is with being too structured. What I mean by this is being too specific about what you want to get done each day. Most of the things we want to get done around the house do not really need to be done on a specific day. For instance, I like to give my home office a really good clean on a Saturday morning, but more often than not something will come up that prevents me from being able to do that. Now if I want to follow my calendar religiously, it would annoy me if I was prevented from doing what I had planned, but really, does my office need a good clean specifically on a Saturday morning? No of course not. It would be nice, but it really doesn't matter if I do it on Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon. The only thing that really matters is at some point in the week I do it. (But even then that is debatable). This problem can be exacerbated if you have young kids. With kids under the age of 13, there's no way you will be able to maintain a well structured home. Kids were born with the natural ability to destroy all well intentioned plans. And that's fantastic. It's all part of the experience of raising children. If it didn't happen, you'd miss out on one of life's joys. I can promise you on the day your kids turn 13 you will miss all that disruption. Your kids are going to go from being entirely dependent on you to wanting to have nothing to do with you as they go through adolescence. For most of you, I hope, your family comes first. This means if you get irritated because a family member ungently, and unexpectedly, needs you you should be happy. It might be inconvenient, but family comes first. There's no debate. If there is a debate, then perhaps family (or this particular family member) is not really your number one. One thing I've learned over the years is as soon as you involve another living creature in your plans, you are going to need to be flexible. My wife, for example, has no concept of time when it comes to family plans. She's spot on with her time when it comes to friends or strangers, but when it comes to her family, her buffer is two or three hours. I remember not long after being married I used to have to lie to her about when we needed to be at the airport. If check in time was at 9:00am I would tell her it was 8:00am. This meant we were able to build buffer time into our plans. Today, she's much better—I must have coached her well, but it did take ten years to get her to that state. And there will always be the unexpected. As you say, kids get sick and that changes everything. Now, as you both work, what contingency plans do you have in place for when a child cannot go to school or daycare centre? This is critical because you cannot plan for a child being sick. This is contingency planning and as soon as the decision to keep you child at home, what needs to happen? Do you call your parents and ask them to take care of your child, or does one of you need to stay at home? Ensuring your contingency plan is in place and ready to roll should the unexpected happen will save you a lot of stress and panic. Now the question arises; what do you do with all the work you had planned to do when the unexpected takes over your day? Well, if you are planning for the week, all it means is you reschedule what you wanted to do to some other time in the week. It's likely you will have a few days to reschedule things over and you may be able to renegotiate some of your commitments. A few years ago we had a family emergency that became apparent at 7:30am. I had a full day of work planned, yet this was family and I immediately took action to deal with the emergency. This essentially destroyed my plan for the day and the repercussions continued into the next day. However, I was able to sit down for ten minutes later in the afternoon and I messaged my appointments scheduled for the next day to tell them I was going to be unable to attend. I was then able to get back to the emergency. The most important thing is you deal with the issue in front of you first and once everything is back under control, you can review what you have on your plate and reschedule where necessary. Life is never going to be a straight line and no matter how well planned you are, things are going to go wrong. In a previous episode I spoke with Simon Jeffries, former UK Special Forces officer and Simon mentioned about when in the special forces you know before you begin things are not going to go according to plan. However, the important thing is to know precisely what you objective is and you stay focused on accomplishing that. Special forces soldiers do consider everything that could go wrong and what they would do in those situations, but the most important thing is they keep their eye on the objective. If you have ever seen the news footage of the the British SAS storming the Iranian Embassy in 1980, you may have seen one of the SAS soldiers getting caught in the rope he was descending on. His colleagues did their best to cut him down, but the mission still went on. They dealt with the emergency quickly and as efficiently as possible then got straight back to doing what they had planned to do. It's this approach we want to be bringing to our lives too. Things are not going to go according to plan. However, when you are clear about what must be done that day, you put yourself in a much stronger position because you are more focused and disruptions will just bounce off you. Now you don't want to be setting yourself too many objectives. I only set myself one or two. I know that I will get those done 99% of the time. Yesterday was a very disrupted day, yet I had two things to complete. I needed to go to the bank and record and edit my YouTube video. My wife woke up feeling rather unwell, so I took her to the doctors. While she was there I realised I could call in to the bank, so I did that (there's long queues at this time of the year to see a doctor). Once done at the bank, I picked my wife up from the doctors. I had to go to the pharmacy to get her prescription once I'd got her home and tucked up in bed. After a short sleep, my wife was feeling a lot better, so I was able to pick up the video recording and editing. There are other things on my list for the day, and a few of those I needed to reschedule, but when I finished for the day, I was surprised how much I'd actually got done. The important thing is not to panic. Accept the disruption for what it is, a disruption that needs to be dealt with then move back onto your objectives. Things will always calm down and return to normal, so there really is no need to panic. If meetings need to be postponed or cancelled, get on and do it as soon as you can. If planned work needs to be rescheduled, then do that. Just don't overthink things. The great thing about having a plan for the week (because you did a weekly planning session) you have a plan to get back on to. This means no matter what disruptions that come your way, you only need a few minutes to review your plan and decide what still must be done and what can be renegotiated. In worst case scenarios, you may feel the need to do a weekly planning session to get yourself back on track. That's okay. Sometimes that's the wisest thing to. I think over the last year, I've had to do that once or twice. It's not something you will need to do often, but if you feel that's the only way you will get back on track, then by all means do it. You'll feel a lot better and much more focused. I hope that helps, Sasha. Thank you so much for your question. It just remains for me now, to wish you all a very very productive week.

In 1978 he volunteered for SAS selection and passed on his second attempt in March 1979. He went on to qualify as a Paramedic and Sniper. He was a member of the SAS counter-terrorist team that assaulted the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980, helping to rescue the nineteen hostages who had been held for six days. Robin has had an extraordinary life and has been speaking about it at events both small and large for over 10 years. Show Sponsor: www.LaShamanaFaby.com

Protesters burned headscarves and passports and defaced the sign outside the Iranian embassy in Wellington today - calling it a "terrorist embassy". There have been widespread protests in Iran for weeks, in response to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died in custody after being arrested for violating the country's dress code. This week, our government was accused of pulling its punches in condemning Iran's crackdown on protesters - while it negotiated the release of two travel bloggers detained in Iran. Today in Wellington, around 50 people demonstrated outside the embassy and called on the international community to do more. Our political reporter Anneke Smith was there.
Today was a really interesting chat - Robin joined the army at 15, after a tough childhood. He joined the Para-Troopers before his 18th birthday, and passed SAS selection at 22. Northern Ireland, The Iranian Embassy siege, and the Falklands, amongst other tours. We also spoke about today's societal issues, and is life better or worse today, according to the Media. Thanks always Tiny Rebel Brewery and Whitson Prestige

Prior to May 5, 1980, the world was largely unaware that the UK's SAS (Special Air Service), or any elite special operations units, existed at all. We thank Pete and Tak for taking the time to join us and reliving their experience from the day that put special forces on the map, permanently.Pete Winner is the author of his bestselling memoir ‘SOLDIER, I', which he wrote with Michael Kennedy.
The SAS is one of the first modern special operations teams in the world. Conceived in North Africa during World War II, they have been involved in almost every British conflict since. Originally, they were shrouded in shadow and few knew of their existence until they were placed on the front pages of the news during the Iranian Embassy hostage crisis in 1980. They specialize in winning the hearts and minds of local populations in order to win countries back for the people and overthrow corrupt governments. They also specialize in hostage rescue, VIP protection, direct action, underwater demolition and the list goes on. So sit back with your tea and biscuits and prepare to be amazed!

Orberwarna is a first level evocation spell with a range of ninety feet and a material requirement of a diamond at least a half carat in size. Orberwarna shoots a four-inch diameter sphere from the wand. Upon impact, the sphere produces a blinding flash of light of around seven million candela and a percussive sound of about one hundred seventy decibels. The flash momentarily activates all photoreceptor cells in the eye, blinding it for approximately five seconds. Afterward, the victim sees an afterimage that impairs his or her aim. The loud blast temporarily deafens the victim and disturbs the fluid in the ear, causing loss of balance. The concussive blast of the detonation can injure, and the heat created can ignite flammable materials such as fuel. During the Iranian Embassy siege in London in nineteen eighty, orberwarna was used to stun the six men who had taken twenty-six people hostage. The resulting fire damaged the building so severely that it did not reopen for thirteen years. This spell is mostly used by the military and has been in official service since the late nineteen seventies.
In the first televised United States Presidential Debate between unknown democratic candidate John F. Kennedy and the Vice President Richard Nixon-those who listed to the debate by way of RADIO thought that Vice President Richard Nixon had won the debate-but those who had watched the debate on television thought that John F. Kennedy won the debate. Why was this? Well...have you ever heard the saying, "PERCEPTION IS REALITY"! We live in a time in history where people are visually influenced and stimulated into believing what their senses appear to tell them-especially our VISUAL PERCEPTION or things we "SEE". The truth is that perception does not mean something is true as we will find out in today's episode of Reason For Truth. Our truth text is taken from 1 SAMUAL 16:7 and you don't want to miss that. What would Brian Bevan say reviews two games in the company of blogger Daniel. But will the intrusion of an extra podcaster lead to another Iranian Embassy siege? Rob’s obsessed with points percentages and the fluid / nut ratio of Tom Lineham’s bollocks. Sam takes his stats to Albania. And Dennis’ social golden point distancing comes into question whilst oblivious to firewalls. Plus, Mutiny on the HJ gets tugged off from Jiffy. Enjoy.

There's a bit of a change this week with Lord Carnarvon taking over with the questioning. His guest is Kate Adie CBE, DL well known for her long service as the BBC's Chief News Correspondent. Kate has travelled extensively during her BBC career. The two foreign assignments she is most often associated with are the bombing of the Libyan capital Tripoli in 1986 and the Chinese authorities' killing of protestors in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, in 1989. She was on duty in London in 1980 when the siege of the Iranian Embassy was brought to an end by the SAS. Nowadays Kate presents From Our Own Correspondent and makes occasional programmes for BBC television and Radio 4. Her conversation with Lord Carnarvon was part of the 'History at Highclere' weekend.
The BBC's former veteran war reporter, Kate Adie talks about her iconic reporting of the Iranian embassy siege in London in 1980, witnessing the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 and getting the only Western TV footage of the atrocities that took place, how Colonel Gaddafi nearly ran her over with his little Peugeot while she was reporting from Libya and her reporting of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Robin Horsfall is ‘The Wise Old Paratrooper.’ He served with the Parachute Regiment and 22 Special Air Service (SAS) from 1972 to 1984. He took part in several famous missions including the SAS Embassy Siege in London on May 5th 1980 - later made into the film 6 Days as advised on by Rusty Firmin - and an 'insane' mission into Argentina in 1982. These are just some of his many exploits. An acclaimed martial artist, in recent years he started placing philosophical maxims on social media and became known as ‘The Wise Old Paratrooper.’ Robin is a spokesperson for Justice for Northern Ireland Veterans. The former Iranian Embassy and ambassador's residence on D.C.'s Embassy Row have been boarded up for decades. But recently, a listener noticed construction outside one of them, and asked us to investigate. The story of the mansions involves wild '70s parties, the Iranian Revolution, and a landlord you wouldn't expect: the U.S. State Department. With all going on in Iran, it is essential that we understand and be praying for the people of Iran, understand what Muslims believe about God, Jesus and the Bible, and use both our heads and our hearts to understand the important conflict in light of Truth and God. This is part two which opens with my repeating the story of my accidentally walking into the Iranian Embassy back in the 1980's before moving into a comparison of what Muslims and Christians believe. Forged to fight guerrillas in the sweltering jungles of Malaya. Tasked with storming mountain strongholds in the desert. Trained to hunt down the world's most wanted terrorists. This is the extraordinary story of 22 SAS. The history of the modern SAS is one of the great successes of post-war Britain. Since it was revived in 1950 to combat Communist insurgents, the Regiment has gone from strength to strength, fighting covert wars in Oman, Borneo, Northern Ireland, the Falklands, the Persian Gulf and beyond. In the process, it has become one of the most indispensable, and at times controversial, units in the British army Today, the SAS is regarded as the world's leading Special Forces unit, renowned for its demanding Selection course and its relentless ability to adapt to the changing nature of warfare. More than anything else, however, it is the determination and ingenuity of the SAS soldiers that has made the Regiment what it is today. Drawing on his extensive network of contacts and his own experiences, Chris Ryan tells the story of the men on the ground. From the earliest patrols in the Malayan jungle, through to the storming of the Iranian Embassy, the daring raids behind enemy lines in the Gulf War, and up-to-minute missions to capture or kill notorious terrorists - this is the gripping, no-holds-barred account of Regiment operations. Above all, it is a story of elite soldiers fighting, and triumphing, against seemingly impossible odds.

In this episode, Rustin is joined by Manijeh Nasrabadi, Professor of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Barnard College. She is the author of the forthcoming book, Neither Washington, Nor Tehran: Iranian Internationalism in the United States (Duke University Press, 2020). Manijeh speaks about her research on the Iranian Students Association, which was founded in 1952 by the Iranian Embassy and the CIA to support and monitor Iranian students studying at American universities. Over the course of the 1960s, leftist students maneuvered to take control of the leadership positions of the ISA, and gradually transformed the organization into a radical Anti-Shah opposition group. Within the Cold War context, members of the ISA found themselves entrenched in the anti-war, anti-imperialist, and civil rights movements of the day. Utilizing first-person interviews and archival work, Dr. Nasrabadi not only traces these intersections, but she also highlights how ISA members recall their hopes for the 1979 Iranian Revolution and their disappointments in its aftermath. Rustin closes out the episode with “Lalai,” a political song performed by the Confederation of Iranian Students Choir in Munich in 1969.
