Send us a textThe board is responsible for appointing the CEO, and the relationship between the Chair and the CEO is crucial - but often not easy. So what matters when selecting a CEO, and how can we establish and develop a good relationship between the Chair and the CEO? In this podcast, Dr Sabine Dembkowski, Founder and Managing Partner of Better Boards, discusses the crucial relationship between the Chair and the CEO with Sir David Norgrove, currently a Governor at the University of the Arts and Chair of the aBDRN Financial Fairness Trust. Sir David has held a number of chairing roles in leading public sector organisations. His early career was at the Treasury, at First National Bank of Chicago, and as Private Secretary to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. This was followed by Marks & Spencer from 1988 to 2004, including as a member of its Board.“It's important to be on the shop floor and to see what's going on.”Sir David relates that during his 16 years at M&S, he worked under three chairmen, all of whom held the dual role of Chair and Chief Executive - an approach less common today. While the third eventually separated these roles, the first two were dominant and highly authoritative figures. Their leadership styles had significant drawbacks, particularly a reluctance to encourage challenge or dissent. Too often, the board acted as a rubber stamp for their decisions. Despite these challenges, Sir David learned valuable lessons. “The dictatorial approach is subtle, but it's still there.”Sir David reflects on past experiences in the boardroom, acknowledging that standards were quite different decades ago. He recalls unacceptable behaviour, with a culture of bullying and a dictatorial approach that at times crossed the line. He believes this leadership style was deeply damaging to the business and carried that lesson with him into his later roles. “Having the right CEO is the number one, two and three most important things for a chair.”Sir David emphasises that selecting the right CEO is the most critical responsibility for a chair, ranking it as priorities one, two, and three. He believes that the wrong appointment can strain the chair/CEO relationship and lead to organisational unhappiness and failure to meet objectives. While acknowledging the difficulty of defining the perfect CEO, he recognises the need for trade-offs. He focuses on core qualities. A CEO must be direct, transparent and willing to speak openly about issues. “All you can do is trust your instinct - and that can be wrong.”Sir David acknowledges the inherent challenges of assessing candidates, especially in determining whether they meet the criteria and trust can be established. However, he believes no process can guarantee absolute certainty, as ultimately, decisions rely on instinct, which is not infallible. “The person you're talking to is the Chief Executive. He's not your underling.”Sir David believes building and maintaining a strong relationship with a CEO requires adapting to the individual's character. He emphasises the importance of regular, consistent communication, which often takes the form of a weekly meeting or phone call to discuss what's happening in the business, address mutual concerns, and ensure an open line of dialogue. The two top takeaways for effective boards from our conversation are:1. Have the right CEO. If the CEO isn't right, then the CEO should go.2. Ask questions. Get out and about, go and visit places and sit down with people, get them to tell you what they're doing. There's no substitute for it.
On the 30th April 1980 six armed Kuzhestanis burst into the Iranian Embassy at no.16 Prince's Gate, in the smart London neighbourhood of Kensington. So began a six day siege that ended in dramatic scenes, broadcast on live TV, as members of the SAS smashed their way into the British consciousness, and the building, bringing to an end the terrorist attack in a ruthlessly executed operation. The Wapping Dispute was a major confrontation in the 1980s between print unions and Rupert Murdoch's News International as it sought to modernize operations, leading to the decline of union power in the UK. Sparked by technological advancements in the printing industry, the dispute highlighted broader shifts in labor relations and government policies under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Its resolution marked a significant turning point in industrial practices, paving the way for increased operational efficiency at the cost of union influence.
Spring 1985, six months on from the bomb at Brighton's Grand Hotel that killed five men and women in town for the Conservative Party conference and came within feet of killing Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Police are now satisfied that they have identified the man responsible for planting the bomb - Patrick Magee, aka the Chancer. They just don't know where he is. Magee is back in Britain, planting a bomb in a hotel across the road from Buckingham Palace with an even longer timer fuse than the Brighton bomb. A police surveillance operation on another IRA suspect, meanwhile, leads to an unexpected result.Written and presented by Glenn PattersonSeries Producer: Owen McFadden Story Consultant and Sound Design: Alan Hall Producer: Lena Ferguson Archive Producer: Fran Rowlatt McCormick Production Co-Ordinator: Hollie Wallace Composer: Mark McCambridge Sound Engineer: Claire Marquess Mixing Engineer: Mike Woolley Patrick Magee archive courtesy of Peter Taylor and Whistledown ProductionsExecutive Producer Rachel HooperA Walk on Air production in association with Keo Films
The IRA's Patrick Magee has left a bomb, under a bath, in room 629 of the Brighton's Grand Hotel. It's timed to go off in three weeks, three days, six hours and thirty-six minutes, at 2.54am on Friday 12 October. The day of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's speech to the Conservative Party Conference in Brighton. While Party colleagues socialise, or prepare for bed on the last night of conference, the Prime Minister settles down to write her big speech until the early hours. Or until 2:54am, when the bomb goes off. It's the biggest direct assault on a British Government since the Gunpowder Plot.Written and presented by Glenn PattersonSeries Producer: Owen McFadden Story Consultant and Sound Design: Alan Hall Producer: Lena Ferguson Archive Producer: Fran Rowlatt McCormick Production Co-Ordinator: Hollie Wallace Composer: Mark McCambridge Sound Engineer: Claire Marquess Mixing Engineer: Mike Woolley Patrick Magee archive courtesy of Peter Taylor and Whistledown Productions Executive Producer: Rachel HooperA Walk on Air production in association with Keo Films for BBC Radio 4
When you get right down to it, everything in life is a matter of timing. It's the night of 17 September 1984. The guest in room 629 of Brighton's Grand Hotel has ordered a bottle of vodka and three cokes. A few minutes before, the guest – who signed in two days ago as Roy Walsh – put the panel back on the side of the bath in 629's en suite. Behind that panel he has left a bomb, timed to go off in three weeks, three days, six hours and thirty-six minutes, at 2.54am on Friday 12 October. The day of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's speech to the Conservative Party Conference in Brighton. And the Prime Minister and all her cabinet, as this man who calls himself Roy Walsh knows, will be staying in the Grand Hotel. How do you feel as the timer ticks down? How do you fill your days? And what of those who, all unknowing, are travelling towards the end date you have set?Written and presented by Glenn PattersonSeries Producer: Owen McFadden Story Consultant and Sound Design: Alan Hall Producer: Lena Ferguson Archive Producer: Fran Rowlatt McCormick Production Co-Ordinator: Hollie Wallace Composer: Mark McCambridge Sound Engineer: Claire Marquess Mixing Engineer: Mike Woolley Patrick Magee archive courtesy of Peter Taylor and Whistledown ProductionsExecutive Producer: Rachel HooperA Walk on Air production in association with Keo Films for BBC Radio 4

Pivotal street actions that have fueled the march toward LGBTQ liberation are included in a newly-accessible collection of This Way Out programs at americanarchive.org: Section 28 protesters converged on Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher at Downing Street, a Stop AIDS Now barricade blocked the Golden Gate Bridge, and a “rice-toss” in San Francisco expressed anger over the Defense of Marriage Act. Generation Z activism has been influenced by the protest culture of the past — now on digital “streets” and across intersectional lines. Pacific Pride Foundation Community Outreach Manager Levin Fetzer talks about the struggle to remain hopeful and the importance of learning from movement predecessors. In this episode, we delve into one of the most turbulent periods in recent British history: the introduction of the poll tax and the subsequent riots that shook the nation. The poll tax, officially known as the Community Charge, was introduced by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's government in the late 1980s. Intended as a reform of local government finance, it quickly became one of the most controversial and unpopular policies of the era. Join us as we explore the origins, implementation, and widespread backlash against the poll tax. We begin by examining the rationale behind the poll tax. Designed to replace the old system of rates based on property values, the poll tax was meant to be a fairer way of funding local governments by charging every adult a fixed amount. However, this approach sparked outrage as it disproportionately affected low-income individuals and led to accusations of unfairness and regressive taxation. We'll discuss the government's motivations and the economic and political climate that led to this policy. Our episode then moves to the public's reaction and the rise of resistance. Across the UK, citizens from all walks of life organised protests, formed anti-poll tax unions, and engaged in acts of civil disobedience. The widespread refusal to pay the tax highlighted the deep-seated anger and frustration among the populace. We'll highlight key figures and groups that spearheaded the opposition, showcasing the grassroots movement that gained momentum and captured the public's imagination. The climax of this opposition was the poll tax riots, particularly the infamous riot in Trafalgar Square on March 31, 1990. We will provide a detailed account of the events leading up to this day, the scale of the demonstration, and how a peaceful protest escalated into violent clashes with the police. The chaos and destruction of that day shocked the nation and marked a significant turning point in public opinion and government policy. We'll analyse the immediate and long-term consequences of the riots on British society and politics. Finally, we reflect on the legacy of the poll tax and the riots. The immense pressure and public outrage ultimately forced the government to abolish the poll tax, leading to the resignation of Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister. We'll discuss how this episode reshaped the relationship between the government and the governed and its lasting impact on policy-making and protest in the UK. Tune in for an in-depth exploration of a pivotal moment in history that highlights the power of collective action and the enduring struggle for fairness and justice. BUDAPEST, June 5: This Sunday the member states of the European Union will be going to the polls to elect their members of the European Parliament. I don't exactly know just what the European Parliament does either, and it has become boring viewing ever since Nigel Farage departed the European Parliament after Brexit. But there is intense campaigning underway. The streets of Budapest are lined with campaign posters, and there was a campaign march last Saturday with tens of thousands turning out. Most of the polls suggest that right-of-center "populist" parties are likely to see the largest gains in this round of elections, though likely not large enough to command a coalition majority, but we'll have to see.But wait! There's more! On July 4—an auspicuous day for Americans obviously—Britain heads to the polls for a general election, and all of the polls indicate the Conservative Party is heading for an epic wipeout at the hands of Labour. What explains the Tories' dismal prospects just five years after their largest landslide win in 70 years? To say they have underperformed the last five years under Boris Johnson and his successors is an understatement. From COVID lockdowns to Net-Zero energy madness, who needs the Tories when you can get real socialism from Labour? And just how will the Tories dust themselves off and recover?I sat down a few days back with John O'Sullivan to sort it all out. John has had a long and distinguished career in journalism and politics, having served as editor of National Review in the late 1980s and 1990s, and as chief speechwriter for Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for a time. Nowadays he is the president of the Danube Institute here in Budapest, where he overseas an active program of visiting journalists, academic, and political figures from all over the globe.
Send us a Text Message.Thanksgiving arrives in Saudi Arabia, as President Bush travels there with Mrs Bush, Senate Leaders George Mitchell and Bob Dole, House Speaker Tom Foley, and several other congressional people. They will speak to the troops and spend the holiday with them. As they get closer to the start of the Gulf War. However this is not the only big news going on in the world. In the United Kingdom, a major political shift is about to take place as the Conservative Party abandons support for its leader Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. It would be hard to overstate her impact on the world. This moment was huge. It was also a bit of a surprise to George H. W. Bush, who will be without a major partner in his efforts to take on Saddam Hussein. The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the forty-sixth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guest is a Foreign Exchange Officer serving as an Observer-Coach-Trainer Company Team Senior with Task Force 2 (Infantry Battalion), CPT Will Happel of the British Army. CPT Happel has since become a student Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and has since been promoted to the rank of Major. In this episode we discuss how the British Ministry of Defense approached their expeditionary efforts during the Falklands War and how these same tenets would be applied to a multinational effort during large scale combat operations (LSCO). The Falklands War, which took place in 1982, was viewed from the British perspective as a decisive conflict to reclaim the Falkland Islands from Argentine occupation. The UK considered the Argentine invasion of the islands a violation of sovereignty and responded with a military campaign. The British government, led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, sought to protect the rights of the islanders and reestablish British control. The eventual success of the British forces in retaking the Falklands bolstered national pride but also brought attention to geopolitical complexities in the South Atlantic. Specifically, we discuss that when viewed through the lens of a multinational expeditionary operation during LSCO, reveals the collaborative efforts of the British-led task force. Nations like the United States provided intelligence support, while others offered political and logistical assistance. The conflict underscored the challenges and benefits of coordinating diverse military capabilities in a joint effort to achieve strategic objectives in a remote and contested theater. Additionally, the Falklands War highlighted the importance of interoperability and communication between allied forces, as well as the necessity of rapid deployment and sustained logistical support over long distances. The multinational nature of the operation demonstrated the strength of collective security efforts in addressing regional conflicts and upholding international norms of sovereignty and self-determination. Additionally, we look at some of the case studies conducted on this conflict: “No Picnic: 3 Commando Brigade in the South Atlantic” by MG Julian Thompson; “Goose Green: The Decisive Battle of the Falklands War – by the British Troops Who Fought It” by Nigel Ely; “Not Mentioned in Despatches: The History and Mythology of the Battle of Goose Green” by Spencer Fitz-Gibbon. Sir Anthony Blunt, esteemed art historian and a favourite of the Royal family, was publicly revealed as a Soviet spy on 15th November, 1979, when Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher confirmed he had been part of the "Cambridge Five", a group of double agents who secretly passed sensitive information to the Soviet Union. Despite his confession to MI5 in 1964, Blunt continued his association with the royal household, working as a surveyor of the Queen's pictures until his retirement in 1972. The response in Parliament included disbelief and accusations of deliberate cover-ups to protect Blunt, leading, eventually, to his knighthood being rescinded. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how Blunt's privilege facilitated his double-dealing at the very highest levels of British society; ask whether his homosexuality influenced his relationship with Guy Burgess and his willingness to betray the British establishment; and explain how a fictional work - and some trigger-happy lawyers - led to his downfall… Further Reading: • ‘Art historian who spied for the Soviet Union' (The Guardian, 1979): https://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/nov/17/anthony-blunt-spy-sentenced-1979 • ‘Anthony Blunt: confessions of spy who passed secrets to Russia during the war' (The Telegraph, 2009): https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/5889879/Anthony-Blunt-confessions-of-spy-who-passed-secrets-to-Russia-during-the-war.html • ‘Art historian, professor, writer, spy – the extraordinary story of Anthony Blunt' (The British Academy, 2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0Z4lucQar0 Love the show? Continuing this season's line-up of ICONIC AND INCREDIBLE WOMEN, I am veritably trembling with delight to bring you today's guest: the extraordinary Gillian Anderson. Her 30-plus year career has taken her from playing FBI Special Agent Scully in The X Files to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Crown. She's been a dogged detective in The Fall and an unembarrassable sex therapist in the Netflix hit show Sex Education. On stage, she has been everything from Blanche duBois in A Streetcar Named Desire to Margo Channing in All About Eve. It's almost easier to list the roles she hasn't played than the ones she has.Owing to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors strike, we don't talk about any of her acting roles. Instead, this liberates us to have a fascinating chat about life, fame, womanhood and everything in between. We talk about her failures to look after herself, her addiction to work, how she coped with global celebrity in her 20s and how this affected the way that she saw herself. Plus: why she thinks wellness culture is making us ill and why her natural instinct when someone tells her what to do is to say 'F** off.'--Gillian's healthy soft-drink range, G-Spot, is available to buy here. Argentina seized the Falkland Islands on April 2nd, 1982. The British government deployed a naval task force on April 5th to take them back. As the force steadily converged from 8,000 miles away, the rest of the world wondered if the two countries would really fight over the remote and sparsely populated islands. They did. By the time it was over in June, 3,336 people had been killed or wounded; sixteen ships sunk; and 134 aircraft were lost. The Falklands campaign is considered by many as the first technologically modern war. In some ways it is a microcosm of what major fleet actions could look like. Martin Middlebrook's “Operation Corporate” gives us the details of what happened.

GUEST OVERVIEW: Christopher Monckton, Third Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, was Special Advisor to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher from 1982 to 1986. Christopher Monckton, Third Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, has held positions with the British press and in government, as a press officer at the Conservative Central Office, and as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's policy advisor. Lord Monckton was Special Advisor to Margaret Thatcher as U.K. Prime Minister from 1982 to 1986. On leaving 10 Downing Street, he established a successful specialist consultancy company, giving technical advice to corporations and governments. For his work on the climate, Lord Monckton, who was Nerenberg Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Western Ontario in 2013, has been presented with numerous honors, including the Meese-Noble Award for Freedom, the Valiant-for-Truth Award of the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, the Santhigiri Ashram Award, and the Intelligence Medal of the Army of Colombia. Lord Monckton has authored numerous papers on the climate issue for the layman, as well as for leading peer-reviewed scientific journals. He established in a paper for the World Federation of Scientists that CO2 has a social benefit, not a social cost. He was also a co-author of the paper that showed the claim of “97% scientific consensus” about climate change to be false (the true figure is 0.35).
On Tuesday, September 13, Queen Elizabeth met with the United Kingdom's newly elected Prime Minister, Liz Truss. Truss is the third female prime minister in the U.K.'s history and comparisons between her and former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher have been made. Then, on Thursday, the Queen passed away at her summer home, Balmoral, in Scotland. She was 96 years old and had been Queen for 70 years, longer than another other sovereign in the history of the United Kingdom. Newt's guest is Nile Gardiner. John Whittingdale OBE MP is former Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. A Member of Parliament for over 30 years, he also previously chaired the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee during its most famous moment – when a pie was tossed in the face of media mogul Rupert Murdoch at the end of a session. The Sun dubbed John ‘Maggie's Toy Boy' when in 1988, aged just 28, he became then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's political secretary. In this in-depth interview, John discusses how people are surprised when they hear of the “vast range of responsibilities” he had when leading the DCMS – including overseeing the work of The National Lottery, leading on policy relating to blockchain and the digital economy, and promoting the UK on a global stage; praises the BBC as “the finest broadcaster in the world” and acknowledges that it may “surprise some people” to hear his strong support – making the case again for the continuation of the licence fee settlement; and shares the challenges involved in balancing protecting the vulnerable from “harmful content online” yet preserving the core democratic principle of free speech – a conundrum which gave rise to the predictably divisive Online Safety Bill.
Christopher Monckton, Third Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, has held positions with the British press and in government, as a press officer at the Conservative Central Office, and as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's policy advisor. He is a policy advisor to The Heartland Institute. Lord Monckton was Special Advisor to Margaret Thatcher as U.K. Prime Minister from 1982 to 1986. In 1986 he was among the first to advise the prime minister that “global warming” caused by carbon dioxide should be investigated. Two years later she set up the Hadley Centre for Forecasting: but she, like him, later changed her view. His latest paper, currently in draft, exposes a substantial error in the computer models of climate that has led to wild official exaggerations of the high-end estimate of future manmade global warming. Why did Lee Harvey Oswald shoot JFK? We'll never know. Jack Ruby saw to that. But we do know why Sirhan Bishara Sirhan assassinated Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. Sirhan was captured. And over the course of his life sentence, he's gone on record about what motivated him. Patrick Magee, the Brighton bomber, is less talkative. Magee tried to blow up Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her cabinet in 1984 – and he almost succeeded. Magee was a terrorist, a member of the Irish Republican Army. But was he a psychopath? And was Sirhan? We've been looking for answers.
My guest this week is Vivien Morgan whose documentary work for Channel 4 included Dispatches & award-winning films for ITV. A TV Video-journalist pioneer, she went undercover, reporting on human rights abuse and the regimes of the closed Communist countries. She is the author of Cross-dressed to Kill about women who went to war disguised as men.Vivien's book is about fearless women who disguised themselves as men so that they could go to war and do their bit. They were early feminists in an era when women were told their place was in the home. They wanted the same opportunities as men so they dressed as men, even when that meant going to war under the threat of being killed or having to kill.In the years that Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was in power, very often in order to enter the corporate world, women dressed in sharp suits and felt like they had to ‘act' as men. During the Pandemic, ‘Zoom' was the disguise for business women who ended with the Lion's share of the domestic & childcare duties, but had to carry on as if it was business as usual in front of the computer screen.Vivien herself had to take on different guises when she went into the closed communist countries in order to bring back stories of humanitarian atrocities. In the mainly male dominated world of TV and video-journalism, she had to find her own ways to stand her ground, build her confidence and expand her abilities to make the kind of work that spoke for itself. Thanks Vivien for celebrating women in history who didn't have the same advantages as us, but who knew they were made for more, and so did whatever they had to do, to live a fearless life of adventure and purpose. In this episode, Garrison is joined by renowned British historian Dr. Andrew Roberts. They discuss portions from Dr. Roberts' latest book “Leadership in War”, particularly Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the Falklands War; portions of Roberts' most famous work “Churchill: Walking with Destiny” including Churchill's use of history in overcoming the three great crises of his lifetime; how leadership lessons from these two eminent British leaders (and history broadly) are still relevant to leaders advocating for democracy today; and what role Britain can play in the “Anglosphere” and beyond in its new era of post-Brexit foreign policy. Prof Andrew Roberts took a first class honours degree in Modern History at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, from where he is an honorary senior scholar and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). He is presently a Visiting Professor at the War Studies Department at King's College, London and the Lehrman Institute Lecturer at the New-York Historical Society. He has written or edited nineteen books, which have been translated into 23 languages, and appears regularly on radio and television around the world. He is the Roger and Martha Mertz Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. His biography of Sir Winston Churchill, ‘Churchill: Walking With Destiny', was published by Penguin in October 2018, became a Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller, was translated into nine languages, and won the ICS Churchill Award for Literacy and the Council on Foreign Relations' Arthur Ross Prize. ‘In a single volume,' Henry Kissinger wrote of it, ‘Roberts has captured the essence of one of the world's most impactful, most memorable statesmen. ‘It is the crowning achievement of his career – and it will become the definitive biography of his subject.' Roberts is interested in public policy and sits on the boards or advisory councils of a number of think-tanks, including Policy Exchange, The Centre for Policy Studies, The Canadian Institute for Jewish Research, The UK National Defence Association, The London Jewish Cultural Centre, and Intelligence Squared US's Intelligence Council.
