There were people running everywhere. Then we saw the Vicomte de Chagny. His face was red, and he was very angry. "Where's Christine? Where's Christine?"He shouted. Suddenly, the Persian came up behind him and took his arm. He said something to the Vicomte and they went into Christine Daae's dressing room.….""Yes? And then?" Mr. Firmin said quickly. "What happened next?""Nobody knows!" Meg's face was white. When I sing only for you? Tonight, I gave everything to you, everything. I know you're in here! Come out!"There was no answer.Raoul looked everywhere - under the chairs, behind all the clothes, in all the dark corners of the room. There was nobody there.

I'm thrilled to share incredible insights from our latest podcast episode featuring the legendary Rusty Firmin, a former SAS (Special Air Service) member known for his heroic role in the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege. This episode is packed with riveting stories, valuable lessons, and a deep dive into the mindset of one of the most elite military units in the world. Here are the Key Highlights: 1. Did you know the Iranian Embassy siege in 1980 involved a team of SAS heroes meticulously planning to save 26 hostages? Listening to Rusty Firmin recount these harrowing days taught me the value of teamwork and preparation. Rusty's insights on gathering intelligence and rehearsing plans have left me in awe of the SAS's dedication. 2. The Iranian Embassy siege transformed counter-terrorism operations globally. His story highlighted the surge in demand for SAS training post-siege, showcasing the global impact of their success. Rusty's two books and an upcoming third one offer deeper dives into such remarkable experiences. #MilitaryHistory #SASTraining #Leadership 3. Rusty shared his transition from military to civilian life. His readiness to leave after 27 years in the SAS and his proactive steps to adapt, like taking health and safety courses, offer a blueprint for anyone facing significant life changes. Adaptability and continuous learning—lessons that extend beyond the military. #Transition #Adaptability #LifeAfterService 4. Discussing the mindset required for SAS operations revealed fascinating insights. It's not just about physical fitness but mental resilience and the ability to make quick, decisive actions. Rusty's emphasis on personal drive and maintaining focus in high-stakes scenarios has profound implications for any high-pressure profession. #MentalResilience #QuickDecisionMaking #PersonalDrive 5. A powerful moment from the podcast: Rusty clarified misconceptions about the Iranian Embassy siege, highlighting the SAS's discipline and integrity. Despite the chaos, the team's mission was always about rescuing hostages, not harming terrorists. Rusty's frustration over released terrorists living freely today contrasts sharply with the sacrifices soldiers make. #Integrity #Discipline #MilitaryEthics Rusty's Books: "Go Go Go": Adapted into the Netflix film "6 Days Netflix." He describes the six-day operation, the meticulous planning, and the successful 11-minute assault that resulted in the rescue of 19 hostages and the death of five terrorists.Rusty also briefly discusses Operation Certain Death during the Falklands War in 1982, which was ultimately aborted due to various challenges and the loss of 19 SAS members in a helicopter accident. The interview concludes with Rusty mentioning his two non-fiction books, "Go! Go! Go!" and "The Regiment: 15 Years in the SAS," which provide more detailed accounts of his experiences.https://www.rusty-firmin.com/Timeline of major highlights:00:00:00 - Rusty describes the 11-minute assault during the Iranian Embassy Siege00:01:00 - Introduction of Rusty Firmin and his background00:02:00 - Rusty's forced entry into the army at age 1500:05:00 - Rusty's progression through various units before joining the SAS00:12:00 - The selection process for the SAS00:22:00 - Close quarters combat training in the SAS00:30:00 - Jungle training in Belize00:38:00 - The Iranian Embassy Siege begins on April 30, 198000:52:00 - The SAS assault on the Iranian Embassy on May 5, 198000:56:00 - Operation Certain Death during the Falklands War in 198201:03:00 - Rusty's two non-fiction books about his experiences in the SASUpdate 4-19

At CATO we believe that history is the repository of all lessons and to ignore history is do doom yourself to repeat it. At the 2023 conference in San Diego, we asked the infamous SAS team leader Rusty “No Gloves” Firmin to debrief the lessons learned from the 1980 Iranian Embassy Siege. I asked fellow CATO board members Toby Darby and Josh Wofford to sit down with Rusty so he could share his wisdom with those who could not see him at the conference. I spent a fair amount of time with Rusty before and during the conference and was impressed by his humility, sense of humor and how our profession shares many of the same struggles he as experienced throughout his career an ocean away. I highly recommend his book on the six day hostage taking called GO GO GO! The assault planning and training, strategy and tactics are described in detail, and the personal stories of the gunmen revealed -- who they were, where they came from, why they did it and Saddam Hussein's direct involvement. This week we have a unique episode for you. We went into the archives to unveil a never released episode from the summer of 2023. Every summer Jason does a late night deep dive with RYAN FIRMIN and JACK BEHAR. This year's version needed some editing which is why it didn't get released during the summer. Therefore, on Season 7 Episode 3 of the Camp Cast Jason, Ryan, and Jack get into it! They start by talking about the 2023 Sing, then quickly go off the rails on topics like musicals, petty childhood nonsense, camper shout outs, why Jason and Behar can't get along, the Hatchet Hunt, our favorite generic key log shout outs, Chicago vs. LA Food, Feldgreber family history and how it connects to Manny's Deli, what books have you read lately, and maybe a few other actual camp related topics. Enjoy!

In this episode of BackTable ENT, Dr. Gopi Shah discusses microtia repair techniques with Dr. Mai Thy Truong, fellowship director of pediatric otolaryngology at Stanford University. --- EARN CME Reflect on how this Podcast applies to your day-to-day and earn free AMA PRA Category 1 CMEs: https://earnc.me/U3ERR8 --- SHOW NOTES First, the doctors discuss the preoperative workup for children with microtia. Dr. Truong explains that it is very difficult to catch microtia or anotia in a prenatal ultrasound, so the diagnosis is usually a surprise at delivery. She takes time in explaining the diagnosis to the family with her co-surgeon and assesses the family's emotions. Her follow up plan is to get the child fitted for hearing devices if needed and sets up conversations about preferential seating and FM systems in school. She will follow up with patients once every year; during these visits, she orders an audiogram and measures the length of the normal ear and chest frame. The length measurements of the normal ear help her get a sense of when the normal ear stops growing and the measurement of the chest frame helps her decide whether the rib cartilage is robust enough for surgery. She notes that ears will stop growing in length around 7-10 years of age and ear stops growing and that a chest frame size of 60 cm indicates that there is enough cartilage to make the entire ear. Once the family has decided on surgery, she orders a CT scan to learn about the temporal bone anatomy and other problems in the underdeveloped ear. Then, she works with computer programmers to create a 3D model of a mirror image of the normal ear to guide her carving during surgery. Dr. Truong is trained to use the Firmin technique of microtia repair. This is a 2 stage procedure that involves harvesting rib cartilage and using it to carve out ear subunits. Her co-surgeon always harvests the graft from the ipsilateral rib cartilage while she creates the skin pocket where the new ear will be placed. Additionally, she explains how to avoid causing a pneumothorax and instruments needed for the rib cartilage harvest. She also emphasizes the importance of creating a harmonious skin pocket and warns listeners against manipulating the anterior blood supply of the ear by mistake. Then, she discusses how she carves the rib graft into 5 different subunits of the ear with an 11 blade and a 15 blade. She uses steel sutures to suture each part together using a particular order. Finally, she is able to put the ear framework into the skin pocket, close the incision site, and apply dressing. Lastly, she explains her postoperative care of microtia repair patients. Her patients remain in the hospital for 3 days and receive antibiotics (Augmentin) for a week. She also obtains a chest x-ray after the procedure.
Using a public bathroom is usually not the highlight of your day. However, when it comes to choosing which stall or urinal to use, there is a way to minimize your potential exposure to germs and bacteria. I begin this episode by telling you which one you should choose – and if that one is taken, what should be your second choice. https://www.womansday.com/health-fitness/wellness/a58568/cleanest-bathroom-stall/ Sure, we've all heard how amazing the human brain is. Yet, it actually is rather lousy at many things. For instance, memories get distorted, your brain makes a lot of mistakes and misjudgments and there are plenty of other things is does not do particularly well. What's interesting is those flaws are actually a good thing according to Henning Beck, a neuroscientist and author of the book Scatterbrain: How the Mind's Mistakes Make Humans Creative, Innovative and Successful (https://amzn.to/31EemMJ). Listen as he describes how these brain deficiencies actually help make your life better, even though it is sometimes hard to see. The Internet can make your life a lot easier, however you do pay a price. And that price is your privacy, according to Firmin DeBrabander, professor of philosophy at the Maryland Institute College of Art. He is also author of the book Life After Privacy (https://amzn.to/3fzlORx). Listen as Firmin reveals what the potential dangers are and why so many people are gladly willing to give up their privacy anyway. You may have noticed that most pencils are not round and instead have six sides. Why? Some people believe it is to prevent the pencil from rolling off the table. That may be a benefit – but it is not the reason. Listen as I explain the real reason. Source: Douglas B. Smith author of “Ever Wonder Why?” https://amzn.to/2OcdGuU PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Although core to the European economy, accounting for around 11M companies and 99.8% of businesses in Western Europe, the SMB market has largely been underserved by software providers. Now, companies like PayFit are on a mission to meet this underserved audience's needs. With its unique and flexible cloud architecture, PayFit has already met the payroll and HR management demands of 7,000+ SMBs across four countries and grown to 900+ employees. Getting to this point from just 40 team members and 200 customers back in 2017 takes more than just grit, vision and a great product. It takes a solid GTM strategy focused on launching and growing the company's competitive advantage in each core market, an in-depth knowledge of your target audience and the ability to hire exceptional team members along the way. In this session, Philippe Botteri, Partner at Accel, and Firmin Zocchetto, co-founder and CEO at PayFit, discuss the seven secrets behind the company's SMB GTM strategy. A worldwide pandemic delaying her Cedarville experience for a year. Charis Chen has persevered through a number of trials to pursue her degree in psychology. Charis, a junior from Malaysia, was set to begin classes at Cedarville in fall 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to adjust her plan. While taking classes online at strange times of the day – Malaysia is 12 hours ahead of eastern standard time – she found ways to stay engaged while battling sleepiness and fatigue. Even online, she was able to connect with fellow students over text messaging and communicated with her professors about slide shows that were hard to read or class discussions that were difficult to hear. Through the difficulties, Charis never wavered in her belief that God wanted her to study psychology at a school that prioritized the Gospel and the Word of God. She knew that helping people emotionally and mentally had to be anchored in the Good News of God's saving work through Christ. Now she is engaged in a research project on the topic of grief related to the sudden and unexpected passing of her advisor and professor, Dr. Michael Firmin, who went to be with the Lord on October 27, 2020. Charis' psychology instructor in Malaysia was taught by Dr. Firmin, and she credits his influence as a significant factor for her pursuing a degree at Cedarville. “God is a good God who holds the best of reality in His hands,” Charis shares during the podcast. “Even over the rest of my life before Cedarville, I saw how He arranges things in ways I wouldn't have planned, and they turned out great. I know that wherever He puts me, He has a purpose for it. “I started watching the chapel livestream the week before everyone was sent home. Around that time, Dr. White started repeating this phrase in chapel every day, “God is faithful; you can trust Him.” That was a big part of what I held onto.” ………. Dr. Michael Firmin was featured on the Cedarville Stories podcast in 2020.
