Through a series of releases via influential dance labels like Numbers, Tectonic and Hotflush, as well as two albums for Rinse Recordings in 2012, he originally blazed a trail for funky to return to the clubs. He has continued to push the sound firmly into the future too, albeit now punctuated by his wider influences, via his own, genre-blurring Roska Kicks & Snares (RKS) imprint. Presiding over 50 releases, RKS has welcomed the likes of MA1, Champion, Gemmy and Doc Daneeka to the label since its inception in 2009 and now functions around a core base of new artists; Tony Tokyo, J Kenzo's Jodo Kast project, Majora, Transcode and Frederique. After spending the last four years releasing via different platforms A renowned DJ to boot, Roska's ‘Roska Presents' brand has seen him curate line-ups across the UK for the last five years and after recently returning from a tour of Asia – he took in dates in Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Osaka and Seoul. Armed with a series of fresh remixes for artists including Matthew Herbert, grime-rap star CasIsDead, DJ Fresh and even Diplo, Roska is also prepping releases for Low Steppa's Simma Red, Form & Function and Pinch's crucial label hub, Tectonic. For the latest 1 More Thing podcast we join the dots between dubstep, garage and drum & bass with an original UK article... J:Kenzo. The son of a DJ, brought up amid a rich culture of vinyl and digging, Kenzo's musical inspirations go back as far as he can possibly remember but truly took root when he first heard jungle in the mid 90s... And consequently blossomed when he first became a DJ in the late 90s.On a mission to "play music for the people", J traversed the worlds of garage and drum & bass playing up and down the UK before being bitten by the then-burgeoning dubstep movement the mid 2000s and becoming part of the genre's earliest generations of pioneers, pushers and protagonists.Gradually honing his minimal signature, Kenzo became one of the most consistent artists in dubstep from the late 2000s onwards. With his weekly radio show on Rinse and releases on key labels such as Tempa and Dub Police, J:Kenzo became a key player in dubstep's international explosion and found himself at the forefront of the US exodus as the genre rocketed to unparalleled EDM levels. Dubstep's underground credibility was compromised during this point, but Kenzo maintained his own rep and stayed dedicated to minimal heavyweight dub-wise music.  One of the few first-wave artists who didn't leave the genre at the time, J:Kenzo was part of a movement of ardent dubstep craftsmen who helped to maintain the genre's deep roots and powerful cultural values.  Staying true to the deeper side of the genre, he found space to encourage and champion like-minded leftfield dubstep artists on his label Artikal Music and bring in other elements and influences in his own productions... Including his original passion for jungle and drum & bass.  As dubstep has found its original foundation spirit once more, and started to develop a flourishing new generation of artists and fans, J:Kenzo remains on the forefront as relevant and inspired as he was back in the mid 2000s. Les Femmes s'emparent d'ELAB, ça reprend ! Après une saison 2021-2022 bien chargée, notre programme spécial FEELAB continue à mettre en lumière la scène féminine et non-binaire. Ce soir, c'est une artiste de notre équipe qu'on met en avant, Morgann, alias Midnight Totem.MIDNIGHT TOTEM : Artiste plasticienne, Morgann se met à la musique en 2020, par la MAO. Assez vite elle travaille le live pour son projet Midnight Totem, mais apprend également à mixer pour partager ses coups de cœur : de la musique électronique pointue, immersive, dans des registres ambient, break, bass music, expé, IDM.C'est une compositrice boulimique. Après une résidence Ableton Live au Trempo à Nantes cette année, animée par le très réputé DJ et producteur Simo Cell, elle sort un premier album sur le label uruguayen Veinte 33, puis quelques mois après un second en autoproduction. Elle a aussi pu jouer ses premiers live l'été passé, dont son projet Mangata, un live AV avec une danseuse. Le collectif Zone rouge pour leurs sets break/ bass trop chouettes ! Soyoon ou encore Lugal Lambada pour leurs sets ambient immersifs. Dans un délire plus déstructuré, post-club : Mika Oki, Zoé Mcpherson ou Rinemax, des sets où tu sais pas à quoi t'attendre ! »< LES FEMMES S'EMPARENT D'ELAB >Été 2020. Passées une centaine d'émissions sur C Lab, il a bien fallu se rendre à l'évidence : les femmes manquent cruellement à nos micros. Sur les 35 émissions réalisées l'année dernière, seulement quatre DJs femmes... Un constat qui fait mal à la scène bretonne, pourtant super-active et fière de l'être.Aussi, afin de commencer à notre niveau, local et associatif, à contrer cette tendance structurelle de manque de visibilité des artistes femmes et personnes non-binaires, qui se reflète bien malgré nous dans notre programmation, nous avons décidé de lancer un programme spécial de podcasts diffusés sur nos ondes et notre compte SoundCloud. L'objectif est de découvrir des artistes, qu'i.elles soient débutantes, émergentes ou déjà confirmées, bretonnes, françaises ou d'ailleurs. Our second premiere of the day comes from Robin Wylie as he features on Belfast label, Computer Controlled Controlled Records. Robin has been pushing boundaries producing dubstep and breaks, but now he features on the first digital release Nez's imprint alongside Hezzaine as they provide three impeccable electro cuts. Following the analogue-fuelled, sci-fi electro soundscapes of Hungarian producer Norwell's Interkosmos EP, Computer Controlled Records next record is a little closer to home. Robin Wylie is a producer synonymous with wicked breakbeats, 2-step and jungle with a refreshing take on electronic music in his home of Belfast. A pace-setter in every regard, Robin's work alongside dubstep pioneer J:Kenzo as Polarity is to be particularly admired, bringing labels like Sneaker Social Club for their debut in a city usually dominated by house and techno. Now the pair join forces again (the latter under his Hezzaine moniker), this time on Nez's Computer Controlled Records, serving up three raw cuts of tough, acid-dipped electronics and lairy UK-electro energy. Inspired by the 1975 Doctor Who character Davros, ‘Davros on Acid' is an otherworldly, sludged-out trip through Planet Skaro, ear-wriggling synth lines and malfunctioning bleep and bloops providing the listener with a tumbling Alice-In-Wonderland sonic experience; blasting off through the outer-rims of space as dotted stars turn to streaks of white light, landing on a planet ethereal and previously unexplored. ‘Timelines' is a clubbier cut; a tough bass-trip whose beauty is channeled through its simplicity. Sometimes less is more, that much is evident on this tough cut of screw-face, peak-time electro, before ‘Dynamics' ventures down a more melodic route, maintaining its acidic energy and blending it with an alien, atmospheric dreamscape for a softer experience as we come into land. Back again coming up for air after a month of Youtube rabbit holes and tune hoarding. This one brings the usual vocal grime artillery, endless riddim switches and lots of big loud and bashy new dancehall melded in with the odd techno tantrum. Coming out of the South East of England is Kents very own J:Kenzo J has been dj'ing since 1995, and originally started playing Jungle and House & Garage, from were he draws alot of his influences from production wise. J started producing in August 2006, and has recently started two record labels representing the two different ends of the dubstep scene... 'Soul Shakerz' and 'Dub Constructionz'. 'Soul Shakerz' is just about to drop its 4th release within the next month and has a list of artists lined up for 2009. Production wise J has seen has his 1st release this year digitally through 'SonicBoomUK' and his 1st vinyl release on his own label 'Soul Shakerz' 2009 promises to be a year of progression for J with releases lined up for Deapoh's 'Bare Dubs' imprint, '2nd Drop Records', as well as more material on 'Soul Shakerz' and 'Dub Constructionz' plus the work on remixes for various established artists in the dubstep scene. This mix is a look back at some of J's productions as well as some fresh dubs for good measure and has been put together as 30 mins of relentless dubstep dancefloor killers!
