Former cardinal Theodore McCarrick died on April 3; he was the first cardinal to be removed from the College of Cardinals over sexual abuse and was ultimately laicized. This week, we're re-presenting “Inside the Vatican”'s 2020 deep dive, “The Rise and Fall of Theodore McCarrick,” which was published just after the Vatican published an unprecedented report into how McCarrick was able to rise through the church's ranks despite his abuse being an “open secret.” In this episode, America's Vatican correspondent Gerard O'Connell and host Colleen Dulle explain the rise and fall of Theodore McCarrick, once the most prominent prelates in the U.S. Catholic church. The two unpack the accusations made in Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò's incendiary 2018 letter and how those are addressed in the Vatican's recent report. Gerry gives an up-close view of how the events of the last two years unfolded, and Colleen raises questions about whether this report will usher in a new era of accountability. When things are going well, we consider ourselves in charge. But the minute things go sideways in our relationships and expectations, we transplant the blame owed to people onto anger at someone else, and that someone is often God. If I am mad for something that I was not given, or about some thing that was “taken,” or at someone who did something to me, or at someone who did not do something to me, then perhaps my concept of God is too small. In fact, that concept of God is so small that it makes the creator into a creature of the creation (and that only happened once, a few thousand years ago). God does not make deals and does not bargain with us. In fact, that's exactly the devil's occupation. If God is the creator and the mover of all things, the devil is the dealmaker who tempts us and accuses and divides and sows doubt. This is what the classic play Faust and the country music song The Devil went Down to Georgia both point out. The devil is “willing to make a deal” and he dangles a million varieties of the “golden fiddle” in front of each one of us. God does not deal in transactions. He has no need of us. It's us who need him. His moves are beyond our understanding, yet we must make choices in this world to do his will the best that we can. On the flip side, the devil needs us, so he offers bargains, persuading us to trade our souls for golden fiddles or honor and prestige. We gladly barter temporary shiny poisons of this world over eternal life of our souls and think we came out on top of the bargain. Human flaws are a common blocker among many of the fallen away. For me it was a huge blocker. For Catholics, the sex abuse scandal made it very difficult to justify continuing on with the faith. But God did not commit those acts, people did. Right now, today, there are adults committing those same horrors - literally, right now, these things are happening. I suspect in twenty years, tales from the pandemic will begin to seep out of locked-down households. Where secrets live, sins hide. There is no question that these sins revolt us, every one of us, but God did not commit these sins. People did these things. People do awful things when no one is watching. It is not the first time and won't be the last time. No matter what religion brings in the faithful, or political party takes power, no matter what ideology wins the culture, these same sins will continue. These things flourish under secrecy and isolation. For humans, there is no other way. As a child will steal a cookie when a parent walks away, adults who have full reason can conjure far worse actions than pilfering food - but the root cause remains the same as the child. When no one is watching, the self and ego take over. When authority disappears, the apple re-appears. The genius of the story of the Garden of Eden is that you can witness it every single day happening like clockwork as the human heart, wired for God, is so easily short-circuited by temptation and evil. This is not the sole problem of just one culture or skin color or religion or political party or nation or family or age group or parenting style or diet or climate. The same flaw exists in every person who has lived, is living now, or will live in the future. And likewise, regardless of time, place, or physical attributes, there is but one cure for it and that is turning back to God. To do so can be humiliating, but it fixes the short-circuit and restores the heart. For me, the abuse scandal of the Church shoved me away from God more than I already was, as I had focused on the people who had committed the acts. I did not think of the billion people worldwide that did good things with their faith, who found meaning, who did great works of charity, and who loved God first and foremost. I saw the trees amid the forest, the sick and twisted trees, as representative of the whole. I felt that all the trees should be torn down if such a forest allowed such horrors to grow. But then I realized that thousands of school teachers a year are accused or convicted of the same crimes as those disturbed clergy members, yet I never called for the end to all public schooling. Families all over the world commit abusive acts against one another, but I never sought the destruction of the family. I had reserved my worst anger against those who failed at holiness, and I tried to corral God into the same pen as those men who failed, the people. The abuse scandal of the Church horrifies and sickens me to the core, as the Church holds a higher standard, as it must, as it is meant to do, which makes the abuse of trust that much worse. If a claim to holiness is made, then departures from that claim are magnified. To think of the Cardinal McCarrick story or the 300 Pennsylvania priests' abuse brings forth a rage in me. Ugly realities should and must be held up for all to see, to ridicule the hypocrisy, as the awful reality of child abuse will forever be one of the primary reasons for lost faith in a creator or loving God. The hypocrisy of false holiness is the greatest scandal of all! It's a scandal to be a holy fool and scare people away from God with manic literalism, but far worse is to be a holy pretender who is rotten at the core. You know who else hated hypocrisy? Jesus Christ, that's who. And as far as children goes, he said this:“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of things that cause sin! Such things must come, but woe to the one through whom they come!” (Mt 18:6-7)Pain and suffering will remain with us, for reasons unknown, but the Church is God's light on earth. Thus the horror of the abuse scandal damages the victims plus millions more, to the point that the faithful should be and must be the most outraged. We should be the most angry, both clergy and laity. The worst part of it is that the small percentage of predators in the Church through the era of abuse have sullied and destroyed the work of the many good and uplifting priests and bishops and deacons and believers. Priests that I have known and interacted with, who create joy and guide people, suffer from the choices of criminal colleagues. Clearly a culture that allowed it to happen must be gutted and ripped out, while remembering that God did not do this, nor did the Sacraments, nor did celibacy. It was a subset of corrupted human beings who shrugged off authority for ego and pleasure. While the disgusting wound keeps healing and re-opening, it is the work of those who believe to eradicate the problem, from stem to stern, so that the trust of the faithful, and especially of children, can never be used against them again. As of now, steps are being taken, too late for those victims, but the addition of zero tolerance policies, training for all volunteers, Safe Environment training, background checks, Codes of Conduct - all of this and more will be needed, forever going forward. For a good read beyond my rant, read Bishop Barron's A Letter to a Suffering Church. Prepare to be sad and disturbed. But there is hope. There is always hope. Until I finally set aside my own anger about other people's sins, perceived or imagined, correctly or not, I could not let myself be open. I had somehow forgotten: we don't pray to people. We pray to God. And I think of the moment when people left Jesus after they were disturbed about his teaching, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.” This revolted some disciples and they left him, and Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” And Simon Peter says the words that those of us who believe still know to this day: “To whom shall we go?” We know he is the way, the truth, and the life. Peter says the words we all feel: “You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” And so we must remain and carry on and restore the Church, since we believe it is his Holy Church passed on through Peter and the apostles. That is a short yet complete summary of why we'll stay, and run into the burning building to save it instead of fleeing the flames. The root cause of this failure is not God, and never was God. Nor was it Jesus or the Holy Spirit. It was human beings, flawed and fallen, but allowed to sin and abuse trust. So the fix must be made not with the Trinity, but with humans, as it was in the Garden, as it was at the Crucifixion, as it is today, as it will be again tomorrow, as it ever shall be until the Second Coming, on the day we cannot know that will arrive like a lightning flash across the sky. That was the problem for me. I conflated humans with God. As a child, we are not taught to pray to a person. No, we are taught to pray to God. So now it makes no sense that I doubted God when it was always a person or my expectations that let me down. What a revelation to learn that people will always let you down if you put your entire faith in them. There is a saying among recovering addicts: An expectation is a planned resentment. I find that to be a fact repeatedly as I gain hindsight on past decades and phases. If a person or persons drove me away from God, then what in the heck was I expecting of them to begin with? I can tell you, I was not even considering God during my drift away from faith. I was focused on people, places, experiences, and expecting the impossible from flawed creatures, resenting the world when people did not act a certain way. If people are not the thing keeping you from faith, here's another common possible fence that's keeping you out: you are too busy. Career or school or raising a family may be exhausting you. I took this route. (I took various wrong routes.) The weekend became something for social gatherings and parties, but never, never for God. I felt too weary to consider Church because the world of the weekday siphoned the energy from me. The weekend became about relaxing and mingling and recovering for the week. Then the weekend was never about God, not even for one hour. For one hour I couldn't rouse myself from the couch. How many us married couples have elevated our children above our marriages and even over God? How many youth sports tournament and leagues and practices have overtaken Sunday mornings? Then there is just the lazy pajama morning. How many Netflix and video game marathons have swallowed the hours of Sunday? The amusing distractions of sports and media carry us smiling toward our own spiritual deaths. There was time, but never enough, so I thought. But it wouldn't have mattered if had unlimited time, because I claimed that I was too tired and too indifferent. For one hour a week, out of the 168 hours in a seven day week, I could give neither the time nor the energy to offer up a single prayer of thanks. World weary, with a heavy heart, I slumped in the couch to restore myself. Like the apostles in the garden who could not stay awake with Jesus for one hour as he approached his torture on the cross, I could not give one hour. I could not move from the comfort of the couch. But I made sure I spent multiple hours watching sports, or going to the gym, or the brewpub, or shopping, or engaging in pleasure - but I could not give that one hour, or even a single minute. I fell asleep instead of giving that one hour to God, which is where the heart wanted to go all along. I stifled it and told it to be quiet. “I'm too busy for that, I need to watch this three hour football game. I need to stare at this phone to finish reading this editorial.” The hard truth was that the screens were draining me, never restoring me. Even writing requires a screen, so here I sit a hypocrite, as usual. I imagine that what I'm doing on the computer or phone is important, but it's just being busy. Reading news or information seems important, but it's not. "Learning something” is wonderful, but it can feed the ego more than the soul, depending on what you are learning. If I'm learning about a new programming language or how to build a birdhouse, then there is benefit, but if I'm reading about the latest news story, then it does nothing but agitate me, and we can all name people whose news obsession has infected and overtaken their actual lives. This gossip and garbage information empties me out of the all vestiges of grace, and kills off any sense of sanctity that I might have carried with me into the virtual realm. Holy, sacred, sanctity, hallowed - those words meant nothing to me, until the turn back to trust in a Higher Power happened. Those holy things and ideas were words to be mocked and reviled because they blocked progress, knowledge, and efficiency in getting things done. Yesterday I heard someone say that art class in elementary school is a waste of time because it would never “get kids anywhere in life.” But where are these kids going? Where is a child going that art, religion, music, or literature classes won't get them? I think it will get them exactly where they need to go. For a time, I was in agreement with that sentiment. Too busy for foolish things. Too busy for unproductive pursuits. What happens then is that the busy schedule becomes progress itself, until after performing that act for several years you discover that foolish things and unproductive pursuits are often the very spice of life if those things even touch an edge of art, music, religion, and literature. Business and industry replace the sacred. Sitting still becomes the enemy. Being busy pretends at being “good” behavior: working, taxiing children to activities, exercising, politicking, watching the latest TV show - that was a list of what seemed “useful.” This pursuit of all these things made for a constant chase of knowledge at a thin, surface level. Like the narrator of The Great Gatsby, I aimed at becoming “that most limited of all specialists, the ‘well-rounded man.'” This goal of being versed in all subjects or having knowledge in all areas is a fantasy. Consider how people sit around fires with friends today compared to before the invasion of the smart phone. Conversations dug up questions that had no answer in the present company, and when the answer was unknown, we made up stories and jokes about the possible answer amid the firelight. Today, the moment a question is introduced, hands reach for phones to pull back the answer, the “truth.” All of the imagination and joking is killed off instantly, as the spark upon such kindling for conversation has water drown it immediately. There is so much less wonder, imagination, and conversation because Google exists, although software companies spend much in advertising to assure us the opposite. The fireside story or tale has become someone who loves their phone reading a Wikipedia article to those seated at the fire, and the dead imaginations nod and say, “TIL: Today I learned.” But as for me, the pursuit of knowledge was a thinly veiled pursuit of approval and acceptance and self-justification. I can hardly see it as any different from the constant cleansing of the Pharisees, or like modern Muslims who wash many times a day for prayer. This “cleansing” is also done to our modern obsessions, those things we want so badly, that knowledge or sex or money or power. What we want is love and respect, to be seen, to be relevant, and desperate for the approval we will try to “wash” ourselves constantly. Then there is the possible horror that I'm still pursuing approval, among readers, in writing a blog and recording a podcast. The horror here is that I've learned nothing, and this very writing that you are reading is only the latest pursuit of approval. Yet I feel I have to share the story, as the experience of surfacing from a drowning state into drying out compels me to write now. The change from pessimism to optimism happened. Slowly at first, then seemingly overnight. There were markers along the way of how I lost my trust in God, and markers where I took turns to come back. The last turn I took led to radical trust, and now nothing is the same. The change struck me so hard that the “fix” made total sense. That I could suddenly stop seeking approval in all of the old places jarred my entire sense of universe, earth, self, soul, meaning, and purpose. Realizing that putting my trust in that old “sky-fairy” was the key to the door that opened to peace shocked me so much that this sentence proclaims it here and now. The abandonment of any need for pharmaceuticals confirmed to me that the God-shaped hole in our hearts is a real thing. And so I am almost grateful, in a way, for the culture today that silenced and hid God away from me, lured me away from this secret, discouraged talk about the subject, encouraged me to look for answers elsewhere in work and physical ability and alcohol, coaxed me explore all the avenues of self worth, only to make me so fully aware in the end that the one glaring omission of meaning sat sidelined through it all. Sitting on end of the bench of my roster of meaningful pursuits sat Jesus of Nazareth, the last player to enter the game. The humble one, ignored, avoided, mocked, sat patiently while all the other flashy players (who talked a big game) limped back from the field of life. I finally turned to that one remaining person, and said, “Ok, Jesus. Let's try this. I've tried everything else.” Only to find, of course, that the last player is the the greatest of all time, and now he is the only one needed. All along, he was the only player, coach, owner, and fan that I ever needed, and the joy of gaining this valuable knowledge would seem a shame not to share. For anyone else that might be thrashing about in those same waters and not sure where the life buoy is located, I feel that I should share it, as it took me so long to reach for the hand that was waiting to be grasped the whole time. So why do we spread class 1 relics all over the globe? Doesn't this violate church teaching? 07:50 – My sister joined a church that rearranges their Creed to read “crucified, descended into hell, died, and was buried.” What are the implications of the Harrowing of Hell on Christology? 13:40 – How can we respond to someone who challenges the Church's and Christ's moral teachings out of a sense of empathy? 17:00 – How do you explain to fellow Catholics that Christ is in time but is fully God and God is outside of time? 19:40 – How would you go about the transformation by the renewal of your mind as St. Paul describes in Rom. 12:2? 22:55 – How has the Church portrayed Christ by allowing Cardinal McCarrick and other priests to remain in office even after their sexual abuses became known? 28:55 – Where in scripture does it show that Christ has a sense of humor? 30:50 – Why did Jesus Go to hell to save people? Why didn't he do it from heaven? 33:55 – We just heard a talk on why Jesus's manhood is so important. In light of that, shouldn't we place similar importance on his ethnicity? 37:55 – If I don't get the COVID vaccine I could lose my job, but it goes against my conscience. What would Jesus do in my situation? 46:50 – Jesus' last words to the woman caught in adultery were instructions to sin no more. How does one not become discouraged over this seemingly impossible command? 50:38 – I've heard it said that transgender people are less likely to commit suicide if we refer to them by their preferred pronouns. How do you respond to that and have a conversation with regards to transgenderism considering the Church's teachings and the image of God in us? …

When Father John Wester received a call just before 8 a.m. Mass, he had no idea it would be the nuncio, the pope’s ambassador, phoning to tell him he would be the next auxiliary bishop of San Francisco. Archbishop Wester’s story is not unusual. Most bishops are appointed without ever knowing they were being considered for the job and are caught by surprise when chosen. The bishop selection process is perhaps the most secretive hiring process in the world, shielded from both the candidate and the priests and people he will serve. Those who are consulted about possible candidates are required to return the list of questions they’ve been sent, because even the questions, which reveal no particulars about a candidate, are protected under the Vatican’s top confidentiality classification: the “pontifical secret.” There is a joke among the hierarchy that “a pontifical secret is a secret you don’t tell the pope,” but the secrecy around this process has been chipped away in recent years. In 1984, Thomas J. Reese, S.J., then the editor of America magazine, obtained the survey that the nuncio sends out to gather information on candidates. He published it, in full, in America. The biggest blow to the secrecy around how bishops are appointed, though, came from the Vatican itself. Last fall, it took the unprecedented step of revealing how former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who was removed from the college of cardinals and from the priesthood for abusing minors, managed to rise through the ranks despite rumors circling about his sexual misconduct. The Vatican’s 460-page report detailed who supported Mr. McCarrick’s promotion to archbishop and soon after, cardinal-archbishop, of Washington, D.C., along with who opposed it and who withheld information about his abuse. The McCarrick report was the most significant glance the Vatican had ever given into the process of making a bishop, and already there are calls for similar reports on others involved in abuse or cover-up. America’s Vatican correspondent, Gerard O’Connell, said on this week’s episode of “Inside the Vatican,” that “the McCarrick report put a silver bullet through the pontifical secret.... It has explained largely how the system failed from down low to high up.” In this week’s deep dive episode on how bishops are chosen, Father Reese walks host Colleen Dulle through the official process of choosing a bishop, and Gerry explains where that process went awry in the case of Cardinal McCarrick. Pope Francis has tried to create such a system by having the secret questionnaire that is sent out to bishops rewritten, expanding it from one page to four and including specific questions about abuse and cover up. Working from a copy of the new survey that he obtained, Gerry summarizes some of the questions that the Vatican is now asking about possible bishops. Finally, calls for laypeople to have more of a voice in the selection of bishops have come from inside and outside the church. Pope Francis has asked nuncios to reach out to a wide variety of people, including clergy, religious and laypeople, when gathering feedback. Some lay groups say that consulting with laypeople needs to be a required step in the process. Colleen speaks to Kerry Robinson of Leadership Roundtable, an organization founded in the wake of the 2002 sexual abuse crisis that fosters collaboration between bishops and laypeople in the areas of church management, finances, communications and human resources. Although Leadership Roundtable has not called for any changes to the bishops’ appointment process, Ms. Robinson stresses the importance of diverse voices: “We need to solve for our own myopia,” Ms. Robinson says. “If I were in charge of appointing bishops, I would want desperately for as much informed advice and opinion as possible.” Links from the show: Gerard O’Connell | Deep Dive: The McCarrick Report and the popes it implicates Can the Catholic Church find a better way to choose bishops? Guest: Attorney and Journalist Elizabeth Yore. Topic: How Communist Pope Francis has assisted in helping Communist China in building a Communist Catholic state church while persecuting traditional Roman Catholics as well as evangelical Christians. How has Pope Francis turned a blind eye to the persecution of traditional Catholics as well as protestant Christians? Topic: Elizabeth talks about her personal, twenty-minute meeting with Pope Francis, who was in the room that shocked her and why she left with a feeling of extreme conviction. Topic: What about Pope Francis receiving a Communist hammer and sickle from Bolivia’s president Evo Morales? Topic: Why did Pope Francis allow Bernie Sanders to speak at the Vatican? Topic: Pope Francis has endorsed the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 program that is the establishment of global Communism under such masking terms as sustainable development, common good, climate change, and other such names. Topic: Was prominent American Cardinal Theodore McCarrick working with the KGB starting in the early 1980s? Why did he reportedly refuse to work with the FBI after being contacted by the KGB? Cardinal McCarrick has been accused of running a sex ring out of his beach house according to a July 23, 2020 New York Post article. Did such behavior make Cardinal McCarrick a target for blackmail and thus being recruited by the KGB? In a November 17, 2020 article, Elizabeth Yore offers some very disturbing facts while asking some very relevant questions: “McCarrick traveled to the USSR in 1987 and again in 1988. Also, McCarrick traveled to Cuba in 1988 to visit the brutal Cuban communist regime of Fidel Castro. Over the years, McCarrick traveled to Communist China over a dozen times and even visited with the Communist leader, Jiang Zemin. McCarrick knew his way around Communist countries and leaders. Was McCarrick meeting with his spymasters and sharing intelligence while visiting these communist countries? Was the KGB supplying McCarrick with boys and young men as payment for cooperating with the Soviets? Was the source of McCarrick’s vast wealth from payments by his Communist minders?”  Topic: Did Pope Francis use Cardinal McCarrick to negotiate a top secret deal between the Vatican and Communist China at the behest of Communist Pope Francis and Neo-Marxist President Barack Hussein Obama? Topic: Brannon starts the program by playing the audio of Randy Hillier who is a member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) which is a Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario. Randy can be heard asking a government official about COVID isolation/quarantine camps in Canada and what he describes as a broad latitude of who can be detained in such camps. Hillier’s concerns are quickly dismissed as his mic is apparently cut off and he is asked to sit down. Topic: Brannon plays an audio clip of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaking before a United Nations conference online and describing how COVID-19 has given them the chance to facilitate the great global reset as being called for by the globalists and the World Economic Forum conference coming up in January of 2021. Topic: Was COVID-19 about destroying the free market system, destroying national currencies, setting the stage for mail-in ballots to steal the American presidential election and to prepare the way for what the globalists are calling 'the great reset?' Topic: Will there be another planned “pandemic” and could the medical tyranny be used to target political enemies for “isolation?”

It was during the 1960s and 1970s that priestly vocations plummeted while those who remained were disproportionately disposed to same-sex attraction. Episode 021 - Hypocrisy and Geology: Battlegrounds Between Faith and Science

That's So Second Millennium

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2018 36:39

Bill and I start off by discussing some of the reasons why there is such animosity against faith and such a tendency to credit the claim that science and religion are mutually incompatible. I think we miss a great deal of the point if we do not take into account the relentless critique Christianity has mounted OF ITSELF over the past half millennium. The Reformation splintered the Christian nations and sparked unprecedented bloodshed between Christians. There had been terrible episodes before, but these wars, culminating in the Thirty Years' War, were on a new scale. The massive hypocrisy of Christians killing Christians, and the continuing hypocrisy of Christian clergy enjoying positions of wealth and privilege in both Catholic and Protestant nations, sparked further critique, leading to the Enlightenment and modern liberalism and progressivism. I ask you...do you think anything like modern progressivism, which bases itself on advocating for the poor and the repressed, could have arisen except as a Christian critique of Christianity? In any case, we continue down to the present to be living in the dwindling, waning days of that union between Church and State, even in the US, and the scandals from that are still with us, as we know this month in Pennsylvania and with the spectacle of Cardinal McCarrick. That provides powerful impetus to look for other sticks to beat Christianity with. It doesn't help that there are also people, in numbers enough to be visible, who really do espouse a form of religion that is contradictory to science. The Bible itself makes no claim to be the only book worth knowing, but the post-Reformation world has quite a few people willing to make that claim on its behalf. Turning back to the intellectual issues within the debate itself, I bring up the question: why does so much of the fracas around science vs. the Bible center on biology, when the real question is the Bible vs. geology? Biologists have no real basis for determining the rate and overall progress of evolution if they were not given access to the fossil record and geological time scale...by geologists. Further, there is a great deal more of the Bible that makes claims about geology than about biology. (It's still an extremely small fraction, but of that small fraction...) In fact, as the science of geology got started with people like Nicolaus Steno (his sketch of a shark and shark's teeth is the image for this episode), one of their first tasks was to try to evaluate the record of stones and sediment for evidence of Noah's Flood. One of the first crises in geology was dealing with the failure of this quest to find evidence for a global flood (which may or may not be an accurate translation of the intent of the writer of that part of Genesis, but that's another story).

Regarding the Cardinal McCarrick scandal: Our answer to the scandal is not to turn away from the Church, but to turn toward Jesus. What drives out evil is holiness. "That stumbling block in the road does not mean the road is bad. The darkness does not disprove the light." "I am not a Catholic because there is no sin in the church... I am a Catholic because Jesus Christ founded the Catholic Church. I will always be a Catholic." —Fr. Brian Matthew 18: "Woe to the world because of things that cause sin! Such things must come, but woe to the one through whom they come! If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into eternal fire."

Mike's article in the September issue of Culture Wars magazine, "Cardinal McCarrick and the Homolobby," reveals that the mainstream media's portrayal that the crisis in the Church centers around pedophilia is wrong. Most sexual violations by the clergy involve homosexual violations or sex between priests and men of adult age. But since pedophilia is either illegal or seen as more egregious, the media wants to describe the homosexual activity as pedophilia. Mike explains how the Jesuits, primarily, have created a homomafia within the Church and have been intimidating the weaker clergy to say and do nothing when they discover these abominations in their midst. Or as Mike writes: "Allow us to act on our homosexual impulses, the Jesuits said, and we will act as a fifth column serving oligarchic interests within the Church." Mike compares the crisis in the Church to what is happening locally in South Bend. The local bishop (Rhoades) came from Pennsylvania and is now having to defend himself from accusations of covering up the supposed molestations. Ninety percent of the Notre Dame University professors are said to be for same sex marriage. When the homosexual mayor of South Bend was living openly with his future male bride and then later married him in the Episcopal Church, hardly a word of criticism came from the Notre Dame and South Bend Christian communities. "The Church may destroy itself from within - just as has already been the case in many places in the West. A Church which contradicts itself, rejects its own teaching, becomes useless and dies, like the Church in Holland. Anything that is self-contradictory is bound to disappear. Bad theology is dangerous.”

The 18 men come from around the world to become archdiocesan priests with missionary hearts, who will serve in Boston or in the missions at the local ordinary's discretion. Also, on May 15, the RM Seminary will honor the Pope's apostolic nuncio to the US at a gala dinner. **1st segment:** Cardinal Seán often says that "vocations are everyone's business." We need to pray for vocations and to encourage young people to consider where God is calling them. We have three archdiocesan seminaries: St. John Seminary in Brighton and Blessed John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, and then Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary, which has 1/3 of all Boston seminarians. Redemptoris Mater Seminary is both “Archdiocesan” and “Missionary” and one of its goals is to prepare priests for the New Evangelization, both within our Archdiocese and then also in the missions. The Redemptoris Mater Seminary is preparing priests to do just that.  Our Archdiocese of Boston has had a tremendous tradition of supporting the missions and the people around the world, sending many priests to the Saint James Society and to serve as chaplains in the Military. The Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary is continuing that tradition and also introducing many new things to the life of our Archdiocese. **2nd segment:** Scot welcomed Fr. Medeiros and Fr. De Nigris to the program. Scot said he found all the priests and seminarians at RMSB to have very varied backgrounds. He noted that Fr. Tony was born in the Azores and then moved to Fall River in 1980 with his family when he was 16, not speaking any English at the time. (He now speaks 7 languages.) He came to know a priest who moved him and who inspired Fr. Tony to want to become a priest. He started the path through seminary education in 1982 and entered St. John's in 1986. He struggled during those years in the seminary to determine that this was indeed the vocation God was calling him to. He left the seminary and spent time in Rome in discernment. He attended [World Youth Day in 1989](http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/messages/youth/documents/hf_jp-ii_mes_27111988_iv-world-youth-day_en.html) in Santiago de Compostela in Spain. He heard John Paul II's call to young men to be holy and to follow God's call. Fr. Tony talked with his friends in the Neocatechumenal Way, which he had joined by then, who helped him to see his vocation. In 1993 he was ordained for the Diocese of Rome after attending the first Redemptoris Mater Seminary, which had been opened by Pope John Paul II. He was ordained by the Holy Father. Fr. Tony said JP2 did the greatest service to the Church by offering intense personal witness of his life, his spirit, and his courage. Later, Fr. Tony was sent to China where he was to lead a new Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Hong Kong. Fr. Tony said he learned to follow the footsteps of Christ, where Jesus walked before Fr. Tony followed.  A lot of the first work involved learning the language and the culture, establishing contacts. He had to learn the Cantonese language only after he arrived. Then, moving to Taiwan, he learned Mandarin. Cardinal Seán asked Fr. Tony to come and found a new Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Boston in 2005. Cardinal Seán learned about the RM seminaries when he was an apostolic visitator to seminaries as appointed by the Vatican. He became a big fan of RMS after meeting the priests and seminarians. Fr. Emanuele was born in Italy near Turin. His parents were part of the Neocatechumenal Way and that's how he began his journey. When he was young, he used to say that he wanted to be a priest one day, but stopped saying it by the time he was 12 and thought he wanted to have a family. But later, the Neocatehumenal Way helped him discern his priestly vocation as his Christian faith matured. He was able to consider the vocation without fear that it would be something he would not like. He came to know that God wanted his happiness in his true vocation. His mother's illness after giving birth to Fr. Tony's twin sisters was also a time of discernment as he considered the meaning of his mother's suffering. Through considering the questions of the meaning of life, he began, first, to rebel against his upbringing, and then to realize how wrong he was, that God took good from the evil of suffering. Thanks to the support of his community, his catechist, and his parish priest, he stopped resisting God's will. For him it was [World Youth Day 1993 in Denver](http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/messages/youth/documents/hf_jp-ii_mes_15081992_viii-world-youth-day_en.html) that was his turning point, when he emerged from his "underground" Christianity to open himself to the possibility of the priesthood. He found the strength to leave his girlfriend and his university studies in law to follow the path God had laid out. He chose the Redemptoris Mater Seminary, in which the seminarians are sent to dioceses not of their own choice, to be ordained for those dioceses. He was to be formed to be a missionary priest to the world. All Redemptoris Mater seminarians are selected by lottery to any of the 87 seminaries in the world and they will be ordained for that diocese. Fr. Emanuele was sent to the first RM seminary in the US in Newark. He didn't stay in Newark, but was reassigned to Washington, DC, because Cardinal McCarrick, who had been archbishop in Newark, decided he wanted the same RM seminary in DC. So he asked the archbishop of Newark to send 7 men to help found an RM seminary in DC. Fr. Emanuele was assigned to DC, was ordained there, he worked in a parish in Silver Spring, Md., became the cardinal's secretary, and then worked in a parish in Germantown, Md. He was sent last August to Boston to help form the 18 men at RMS-Boston, who are about a third of the seminarians for Boston. **3rd segment:** The 18 men at RMSB come from nine countries in Europe and Latin America. They use English in the formation house to help them learn the language. The name Redemptoris Mater means "Mother of the Redeemer," referring to the 30 years Jesus lived in formation in his family. It also refers to [John Paul II's 1987 encyclical](http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/encyclicals/documents/hf_jp-ii_enc_25031987_redemptoris-mater_en.html). The big difference in the formation of the RM seminaries is that the seminarians continue the formation of the Neocatechumenal Way. The Way is a missionary movement to help the lost sheep of the parishes to find their way back to the Shepherd. Most of the seminarians have experienced the missionaries at their own doors, inviting them to come experience adult catechesis at their parishes. The other elements of priestly formation are the same as other seminaries. The RMSB seminarians receive their academic formation primarily at St. John Seminary, but their pastoral, spiritual, and human formation at RMSB. Living in the house with men from all over the world that they did not know before leads them to learn how to live with a person, to reconcile and overcome differences, which brings a richness. They are also assigned to one of the Neocatechumenal Way communities in various parishes throughout the Archdiocese, going there several times a week, including the Eucharist on Saturday nights. It also helps them to become familiar with the Archdiocese which has become their new home. They are welcomed into the homes of Bostonians. The seminarians will be archdiocesan priests, but are open to being sent out for missionary service at the discretion of the local bishop. The men ordained through RMSB are hoping that they will be assigned to work in the missions. Fr. Emanuele said the greatest expectation, of course, is to become a priest, but they are learning that it is possible to be a missionary priest in Boston to go out and evangelize those who don't come to the Church any more. They also have the openness and desire to live the missionary vocation somewhere other than the Archdiocese as well. This isn't a sure thing, but they are to be ready to be sent at any time. They should be open to the Lord sending them out. As part of formation, the seminarians have a couple of years of itinerant evangelization experience. They learn to rely on God alone to sustain their lives and vocations. Fr. Tony said it is an essential aspect of formation. They are taken from their schooling for 2-3 years to live with a priest in a parish, working beside the priest. It introduces them to a God attuning them to the rhythm and the mission that belongs to God. During this assignment, they live in poverty and learn to lean daily on the providence of God. The seminarians are not allowed any money, and they always go two by two, as Jesus sent his disciples two by two to announce the kingdom, without any security.   They have three men on this assignment right now: the Holy Land, Washington DC, and the Carolinas. At this point these seminarians are no longer in parish work, but working with Neocatechumenal Way communities as well as visiting with pastors proposing the creation of these communities in their parishes. One seminarian in his 3rd year of seminary right now had previously spent 3 years in itinerant ministry in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. The history of the Church in Boston has immigrant roots. The experience of being foreigners here helps them to better understand the experience of the families of the people they will serve. The seminary is currently in a rectory of a former parish in Brookline, which was originally built for 7 or 8 people to live in. Fr. Emanuele called the experience of living in such close quarters very "formative". The amazing thing is that no complains about their living space. While there may be disagreements, there is also reconciliation. But because they hope to welcome even more seminarians, they hope to one day find a bigger space or even build a new seminary to hold more seminarians and give them a life and space more conducive to their formation and spiritual growth. He said it's very difficult to find a place of silence in the current seminary. Fr. Tony said when RM seminaries are built, they incorporate the fruit of the Second Vatican Council, and find it very important to respect the importance of beauty, as an element especially in which the environment affects a formative dimension on a person. The place itself tells him that God loves him. Paintings and artwork are very important as a dimension of objective beauty. **4th segment:** On May 15, the 2nd annual gala dinner to benefit RMSB will be held. It was hosted at the Pastoral Center last year, one of the biggest events as yet in the building. They honored John and Margarete McNeice for their support of the seminary and Cardinal Seán for his support of the New Evangelization. This year, the dinner will be held at Lantana's in Randolph. They will be honoring [Archbishop Pietro Sambi](http://www.nccbuscc.org/comm/archives/2005/05-287.shtml), the apostolic nuncio to the United States, and local businessman [Jack Shaughnessy](http://catholicboston.com/index.php?content=jackshaughnessy). Fr. Tony said Archbishop Sambi is coming to show his love and respect for Cardinal Seán and the people of Boston. He is in a position of great importance for the Church in the US because of his role in helping the selection of bishops. It is an honor for the seminary and for Boston. This is his first speaking engagement in Boston since being appointed to the US in 2005. Scot said because of his responsibilities in the US, he is worth hearing live and he is a wonderful speaker. Fr. Emanuele said the apostolic nuncio has a first responsibility as ambassador of the Pope to the United States in a diplomatic role. But he also has a great role in the Church in the United States as a point of reference for the bishops of the US, being a point of contact for them. And he has a responsibility to gather the names of potential candidates for bishops to forward to Rome for the eventual selection by the Holy Father. As one of the largest bishops' conferences in the world, it is a very large responsibility. Fr. Tony said he hopes that many people can come to show their support for the seminary and for the priests of the archdiocese through both the fundraiser aspect, but also to allow many of the priests to hear Archbishop Sambi. Boston can show the archbishop that the Church in Boston is one and whole. It is open to families, left to the judgment of parents.
