When there are so many recipes available for free online, why does anyone still buy cookbooks? In this programme we look into the business of selling cookbooks, what future the format may have and hear about the treasured tomes you turn to time and time again. Ruth Alexander visits Books for Cooks, a specialist cookbook shop in London, to chat to Eric Treuille who cooks lunch for his customers from a different cookbook each day. She speaks to cookbook writers Mogau Seshoene in South Africa, author of ‘The Lazy Makoti' books, and Joanne Molinaro in the US, author of ‘The Korean Vegan'. Doris Cooper tells Ruth what a publisher is looking for in a cookbook. She tells Ruth about her big hits and misses as editor-in-chief of Simon Element, a division of Simon and Schuster in New York. And listeners in Italy, Malta and the US tell us about their favourite cookbooks. If you would like to contact the programme email thefoodchain@bbc.co.uk. Presented by Ruth Alexander. Produced by Beatrice Pickup. (Image: Ruth Alexander with her grandmother's cookbook, which still holds her handwritten pastry recipe. Credit: BBC)

There are literally over a thousand comments beneath my various social media posts, and I have since received hundreds of DMs from people wanting to share their story. In sum, the discussion struck a nerve and I concluded that this topic merited further consideration. I thus asked my friend, Nabiha, to join me for a chat on the Anatomy of Friendship. Legends! Today, the whole team had one of our personal favorites on the podcast. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Joanne Molinaro a.k.a The Korean Vegan. This amazing woman truly has a one-of-a-kind story. She went from being a lawyer to amassing TikTok fame essentially overnight. After posting videos of herself cooking while discussing topics such as BLM, LGBTQ+, AAPI, democracy on TikTok, she amassed a massive following and her life changed. Since then, Joanne has been featured on Bloomberg, Chicago Tribune, NBC, Food Network, Los Angeles Times, CNN, The Washington Post, NPR, CBS, and The Atlantic, and more impressively her cookbook ‘The Korean Vegan Cook Book' received Cook Book of the Year from the New Yorker, Cook Book of 2021 from the New Yorker Times, and became a New York Times Bestseller. While all of her accomplishments are incredible, this isn't what we dive into today. In the episode, we discuss Joanne's love for running, how she became plant-based, what her passions and values are, and we double down on her past with unhealthy eating habits and body image.Specifically, we discuss:How to stop letting fear control our livesThe weight of financial securityFamilial pressure to direct what you do with your lifeHow The Korean Vegan became veganListening to the Rich Roll podcast and reading ‘Finding Ultra'What movies should you watch when deciding to go vegan?Joanne's relationship with foodWhy you shouldn't count caloriesMale eating disordersBody imageHow to help men get over eating disordersHow to help improve male body imageIt was truly an honor to talk shop with Joanne Molinaro! This week, contributor Michaela Greer sits down with Joanne Molinaro, known to her millions of social media fans as The Korean Vegan, and author of The Korean Vegan Cookbook, out now. Later, host Jessi Hempel joins Michaela to outline some takeaways from this episode and the mini-series as a whole.
Joanne Molinaro and her alter ego, The Korean Vegan, are taking the food world by storm. A lawyer turned blogger turned TikTok star, Joanne has captivated millions of fans with her vegan takes on classic Korean recipes. But Joanne adds a twist in the form of deeply personal stories about her life, her family, and her role as a content creator. Her debut cookbook, The Korean Vegan Cookbook: Reflections and Recipes from Omma's Kitchen, is out Tuesday, Oct. 12th, and it's one of the season's most anticipated cookbooks. Joanne joins host Kerry Diamond to talk about her story and her favorite recipes. Joanne will be at Cherry Bombe Cooks & Books celebration on Saturday, Oct. 16th. Tickets and all-access passes are now on sale. Thank you to Kerrygold and Ace Hotel Brooklyn for supporting Radio Cherry Bombe. Radio Cherry Bombe is recorded at Newsstand Studios at Rockefeller Center in New York City.
Joanne Molinaro was deep into her career as a full-time attorney when she started blogging as The Korean Vegan, a nod to both her heritage and her curiosity about reimagining the cuisine she grew up on. She soon after launched a TikTok account that exploded and, along with her other platforms, boasts over 3.5 million fans. She's appeared on The Food Network and Al Jazeera English, been featured in the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, NPR, and CNN, and has just released her debut cookbook + memoir, The Korean Vegan Cookbook.A Korean American woman, born in Chicago, Joanne's parents were both born in what is now known as North Korea. Their harrowing journey to the states led them to settle in Chicago. From her earliest days, she was deeply aware of inequity and felt an empathic call to advocacy, along with the impulse to help guide people through a process of change. That led her into the law, which remained her central devotion, literally, until the day before we recorded this conversation. Her TikTok (@thekoreanvegan), was started largely as a coping mechanism for the isolation caused by the global pandemic. She began posting content related to politics and life as a lawyer during quarantine. However, after a single post of her making Korean braised potatoes for dinner (while her husband taught a piano lesson in the background) went viral, Joanne shifted her attention to producing 60-second recipe videos while telling stories about her life, family, and the state of the world. She discovered an entirely new channel for advocacy and artistry in this most unusual place, one that both allows millions of people to see themselves in the stories, cultures, and yes, food, of others, and also serves as a powerful mechanism to advocate for inclusivity and change. You can find Joanne at: Website | InstagramIf you LOVED this episode:You'll also love the conversations we had with MILCK about creativity, music, carving your own path and representation. My new book SparkedCheck out our offerings & partners: Theragun: A deep muscle massage treatment, unlike anything you've ever felt. A central theme of my podcast is the power of a plant-based diet to enhance the quality of life for both the individual and the whole.Over time, the show has grown to embrace a wider variety of themes—art, entertainment, cuisine, entrepreneurship, spirituality, sports, social justice, creativity, equality, and more—each guest sharing his/her respective expertise and experience. Some conversations traverse more than one field. Only a select few impart powerful, impactful lessons across several.Joanne Molinaro is one such human—a cultural phenomenon who goes by the moniker, The Korean Vegan.Born in Chicago to immigrant parents from what is today North Korea, Joanne is a (soon to be) New York Times bestselling cookbook author, food blogger, marathon runner, social activist and corporate law firm partner (although she just resigned last week) with millions of fans across a variety of social media platforms—including over 2.5 million on TikTok—obsessed with her wisdom-laced and thought-provoking food content, garnering her features on CNN, CBS, The Food Network and many other mainstream media outlets.Joanne's audience isn't just massive, it's insanely engaged—a loyalty rooted in her wholesale re-imagination of the cuisine landscape. Her content is so fresh, so beyond nice photographs or the A-B-C food preparation tutorials to which we've grown accustomed, that it's fair to say Joanne has pioneered an entirely new content genre altogether.Exquisitely captured in irresistible sixty-second short films with a penchant for virality, across her social channels Joanne masterfully entwines food, culture, education and self-improvement with incredibly honest, vulnerable, heartfelt stories about life, relationships, grief, family, divorce, surviving abuse, and the immigrant experience. Her deeply personal yarns tug on the universal—an authentic relatability that leaves most teary-eyed upon each's film's conclusion. One of my most memorable encounters of 2021, our conversation spans her remarkable career balancing corporate law firm partner duties with the full-court demands of her growing voice of public influence. We cover her path to veganism (a journey that ironically began with her husband reading Finding Ultra), her experience as a Korean woman living in the diaspora, the many ways in which food and social justice advocacy intersect, and the importance of humanizing the immigrant story. To read more click here. In this episode of Follow Your Different, let's talk about food. On the base level, food is about survival, sustenance, and safety. Yet it is also a centering point for life and culture, and even expressing love. Joanne Molinaro joins us today to talk more about it. Joanne Molinaro is a lawyer-turned-author and Tik Tok info-tainer, as well as a social media rockstar. She has developed a massive following by fusing Korean cooking, veganism, life lessons, and story-telling into a legendary stew that her fans can't get enough of. Her food blog “The Korean Vegan” is one of the top in the world, and her social media and Tik Tok have millions of followers. She also has a new book called The Korean Vegan Cookbook. We get into it and much more in this episode, so stay tuned. Joanne Molinaro‘s Relationship with Food The conversation starts off with checking in on Joanne and how she feels about her new book. Joanne shares that she's a bit nervous since it was her first cookbook, and she's worried that people might not like the recipes in it. Though given the quality of her content, it should not be a problem at all. From there, Joanne shares her relationship with food, in which she loves it so much. She loves cooking, but she especially loves eating, as well as trying out new foods and cuisines. Though she realized early on that she particularly like eating her own food best. “I realized pretty quickly that I like eating my own food best. Not because I'm persnickety about what goes into my food, although that's part of it. But mostly because I think my food tastes the best, because I know what I like, and I know how to make my food the way that I like. I think a lot of people are like, Oh, I love eating grandma's food, I love eating my mom's food. And sure I love eating my mom's food too. But a lot of times I'm like, I can make this better for me.” - Joanne Molinaro For Joanne, food makes her very happy, and it is something she looks forward to. Joanne Molinaro on the Contradiction of Safety and Danger in Food For a lot of people, food gives them a sense of safety, because it gives them sustenance, and they are made with love by our parents and grandparents when we are young. It reminds them that they are loved and cared for. Although for some, it can be a source of insecurity as well, and Joanne had to deal with both when she was younger. As society's views on a “healthy and proper” body leaned on being slim and thin, eating and enjoying food seems like a bad thing to do. Not being to enjoy what you like can cause anxiety. Not being able to comfort that anxiety by eating your favorite food just adds to the stack. “In the past, I've also had a very fraught relationship with food. I was told very, very young that part of my value was tied to how I look and how thin I was. Unfortunately, food consumption contributes to your size. And as a result of that, however much I love eating food and how much I love cooking food, it also creates a great deal of anxiety and danger. So it's sort of that very strange juxtaposition where a bowl of kimchi-jjigae makes me feel so safe, but a bowl of kimchi-jjigae also equals calories which makes me feel unsafe.”- Joanne Molinaro Being at the Forefront of Food Creation Now that she has become a food superstar, Joanne feels like she has to be more fastidious about guarding against or obsessing about food she eats. While it has become an impulse that was brought on by years of being careful of what she ate, she does not want it to influence her work as a food creator. “Now that I'm front facing about my relationship with food, and as a food creator, I feel very responsible about not just sending the correct message out into the world, but by living in accordance with that message. I can't, on the one hand, tell people, “Hey, stop counting calories!” While I, myself, am counting calories. That doesn't make sense.” - Joanne Molinaro Instead of focusing on calorie counts,

On this Episode of #WeNeedToTalk, Malynda chats with Joanne Molinaro aka The Korean Vegan. Joanne Lee Molinaro is a lawyer by day and one of TikTok's hottest chefs of all time. Late last year, Joanne struck a chord with her stunning videos cooking classic Korean dishes and musings on justice, love, life, hardship, success, jealousy, and family. In two months, her Tiktok grew by over 2 million followers in 2 months (a video talking about her traditionally aloof father supporting her in her divorce - something that seemed very uncharacteristic of her Korean father- has over 10 million views).

When Chicago attorney Joanne Molinaro went vegan in 2016, she worried that she wouldn't be able to eat her favorite Korean dishes that she grew up with. It's why she started the “Korean Vegan” blog. She initially focused on her recipes, but over time felt like she needed to connect cooking with personal stories about her family, heartbreak, and other ups-and-downs from her life. These stories have resonated on TikTok, where Molinaro has more than 2 million followers. Hi Plant friends and welcome to another episode of the PBN Podcast. This week we meet Joanne Molinaro, also known as The Korean Vegan. Joanne is a Korean American, born in Chicago, Illinois. When you consider her tasks and accomplishments, you wonder how Joanne manages to incorporate all of her work and play into a 24-hour period. She works at a large law firm, runs 30-40 miles a week, and creates a blog that has over 100,000 followers. On top of that, she's managed to write her first book, which she hopes will be released by Autumn 2021. Joanne also writes poetry and prose, with her writing appearing in Side B Magazine, Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, and The Mashup Americans. Joanne started her blog, The Korean Vegan, in 2016, after switching to a plant-based diet. In July 2020, she started her TikTok platform, mostly as a coping mechanism for the isolation caused by the global pandemic. Each of the simple recipe videos she shared included an accompanying family story, all less than 60 seconds. She's shared stories of her mother's immigration to America, her grandmother's escape from North Korea, interracial dating, and more. In addition to her other work, Joanne has given cooking demonstrations, participated in fundraising events for North Korean refugees, and was invited to be the keynote guest speaker for the Korean Women's International Network 2018 Conference.
