In this episode, we're tackling an issue that's holding Canada back—our entrepreneurship gap, especially when it comes to women-led businesses. Despite years of investment, progress has been painfully slow, and the numbers tell a troubling story: entrepreneurship is in decline, self-employment has dropped, and gender-based barriers are costing the economy up to $180 billion in lost potential. To make matters worse, Canadian entrepreneurs are also navigating rising costs, supply chain disruptions, and trade barriers—including tariffs—that further limit growth. While the impact of tariffs on GDP is estimated at 2.6% annually, the entrepreneurship gap is costing us even more. Our guest on this episode helps us unpack this: meet Marwa Abdou, Senior Research Director at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. Marwa has spent her career championing financial inclusion, gender equity, and private sector growth, working with organizations like the World Bank and OECD. She's here to break down the findings of the Chamber's latest report, Women Entrepreneurs: Canada's Biggest Missed Business Opportunity, and talk about what it will take to finally move the needle. If we have the talent and resources to thrive, why are women entrepreneurs still being left behind? And what needs to happen to change that? This season of our podcast is brought to you by TD Canada Women in Enterprise. In this video interview, Sandra Odendahl, Senior Vice President & Head of Sustainability, Diversity & Social Impact at BDC, discusses the challenges Indigenous and Black-led businesses continue to face in Canada and what BDC is doing to help the situation. PRESS RELEASE Montreal, June 19, 2024 – The faces of entrepreneurship are changing. Despite a two-decade decline in the overall entrepreneur population, the number of Indigenous and Black-led businesses is growing, counteracting this trend. To ensure these business creators can thrive, BDC has created a dedicated Inclusive Entrepreneurship team, is launching a $50 million financing and training program, and investing $200 million in Indigenous and Black-led businesses. “Too many underrepresented entrepreneurs continue to face the same barriers that existed a decade, or even a generation ago,” said Isabelle Hudon, President and CEO, BDC. “Despite a lot of positive strides, we just aren't moving quickly enough. It's clear a one-size-fits all approach does not work and, like the entrepreneurs we serve, we must innovate. The initiatives announced today are part of BDC's efforts to drive greater economic impacts and increase productivity.” As a development bank, BDC takes on more risk to help entrepreneurs and grow the economy. The bank identifies market gaps, and partners with others to create solutions that address the unique challenges faced by entrepreneurs and that mainstream lenders can use. Using this same innovative approach, BDC is aiming to propel more businesses with three key initiatives. The bank's new Inclusive Entrepreneurship Team leads with an inclusion mindset and puts that intention at the centre of every client experience. They have increased accountability with measurable targets around business development, and entrepreneur training and are already testing regional programs with business centres to better serve entrepreneurs where they are. Recognizing the barriers are highest, and trust is lowest, among the smallest and earliest-stage businesses, their first act was creating a new $50M program that provides loans, plus training, for businesses that are majority-owned by women, Indigenous and Black entrepreneurs and have revenues under $3 million. Lastly, BDC Capital, BDC's investment arm, is creating two new $100M platforms to support Indigenous and Black-led businesses. This will complement the $500M Thrive Platform for Women (launched in 2022) which includes Indigenous and Black women entrepreneurs. The team is currently working to hire key roles from the Black and Indigenous communities and collaborating with them to design and set objectives for the platforms. More details will come later this year. “A critical driver of creating intergenerational wealth for Black communities is equitable support for Black-owned businesses,” said Lise Birikundavyi, Managing Partner, BKR Capital. “With less than 0.5% of venture capital dollars in North America going towards Black entrepreneurs, there is a clear gap to fill. Since we started our fund focused on Black founders, we have seen an incredible amount of quality opportunities, and we believe it is great news to see an organization like BDC join forces to create a more diversified and robust venture capital industry.” These initiatives expand BDC's long-standing support for diverse entrepreneurs. Last year, BDC increased its women and Indigenous clients by 11% and 22% respectively. To date, BDC has committed over $8B dollars to underserved business owners directly through programs like the Indigenous Entrepreneur Loan and Thrive Fund, and indirectly through partners like Futurpreneur, FACE, NACCA, BKR Capital, and Raven Capital. Hundreds of free education resources are also available at bdc.ca. BDC's mission is to support Canadian entrepreneurs to build strong and resilient businesses and, in doing so, contribute to creating a more prosperous, competitive, and inclusive Canada. Its corporate values – United for Entrepreneurs, Powered by People, and Courageously Impactful – are the building blocks of BDC's corporate DNA. These values connect what the organization stands for to how it delivers on its mandate and corporate strategy. Additional Quotes “Indigenous Peoples are among the fastest growing populations in Canada and represent the highest growing segment of entrepreneurs,” said Althea Wishloff (Gitxsan Nation, Fireweed Clan), General Partner, Raven Indigenous Capital Partners. “At Raven, we have learned that taking a platform approach, supporting, and mentoring founders, while providing equity and equity-like capital in a culturally sensitive way is of utmost importance. We look forward to the growth of the ecosystem, new businesses being born and new co-investors emerging.” “Women make up half our population and workforce, yet less than 20% are majority owners in Canadian businesses,” said Marwa Abdou, Senior Research Director, Canadian Chamber of Commerce. “Our most recent report found progress is moving at a glacial pace in entrepreneurship and representation and unless radical changes are made, gender parity is more than a century away. It's great to see organizations like BDC continuing to invest new and innovative approaches like the Thrive Platform which is the world's largest venture fund in the world for women.” About BDC As Canada's bank for entrepreneurs, BDC is a partner of choice for all entrepreneurs looking to access the financing and advice they need to build their businesses and tackle the big challenges of our time. Our investment arm, BDC Capital, offers a wide range of risk capital solutions to help grow the country's most innovative firms. We are one of Canada's Top 100 Employers and Canada's Best Diversity Employers. BDC was the first financial institution in Canada to receive the B Corp certification in 2013 and it is the B Corp movement's national partner in Canada. Individual creativity and idea construction sets us apart within our own societies, it is a deeply desirable trait, and can give you power and wealth. ‘Gosh, what a great idea!', ‘Why didn't I think of that?' are often thought and heard. Cue Artificial intelligence, AI can enhance and enable our creativity- giving thousands of creative solutions to our input ideas. Less a brainstorm and more a cosmic tsunami of creation, all in a matter of seconds. It does this without its own personal agenda and selfish desire to have the idea that brings with it the potential for expression, power and wealth. But is it creative? The rapid progress in AI technology has fueled the evolution of new tools and platforms. One such tool is a vector search. If the function of AI is to reason and think, the key to achieving this is not just in processing data, but also in understanding the relationships among data. Vector databases provide AI systems with the ability to explore these relationships, draw similarities, and make logical conclusions. Understanding and harnessing the power of vector databases will have a transformative impact on the future of AI.Edo Liberty is optimistic about the future where knowledge can be accessed at any time. Edo is the CEO and Founder of Pinecone, the managed database for large-scale vector search. Previously, he was a Director of Research at AWS and Head of Amazon AI Labs, where he built groundbreaking machine learning algorithms, systems, and services. He also served as Yahoo's Senior Research Director and led the research lab building horizontal ML platforms and improving applications. Satyen and Edo give a crash course on vector databases: what they are, who needs them, how they will evolve, and what role AI plays.--------“We as a community need to learn how to reason and think. We need to teach our machines how to reason and think and talk and read. This is the intelligence and we need to teach them how to know and remember and recall relevant stuff. Which is the capacity of knowing and remembering. The question is, what does it mean to know something? To know something is to be able to digest it, somehow to make the connections. When I ask you something about it, to figure out, ‘Oh, what's relevant? And I know how to bring the right information to bear so that I can reason about it.' It's certain that thought leadership brings great value to an organization, but how do you calculate the actual ROI of your thought leadership investment? To demystify the ROI of thought leadership, I've invited Cindy Anderson and Anthony Marshall to join me for a discussion. Cindy Anderson is the Global Lead for Thought Leadership Engagement and Eminence, and Anthony Marshall is the Senior Research Director for Thought Leadership, both from the IBM Institute for Business Value.  In this episode, we talk about the IBM Institute for Business Value's 20 year history delivering thought-provoking insights to business leaders about emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges. Their thought leadership reports offer prescriptive recommendations to address the most pressing challenges and opportunities, and to help determine future organizational success. Since 2004, they have conducted groundbreaking surveys, growing from 300 CEO respondents to more than 3000. Due to the long history of the survey, they have a long horizon of data to track global changes in the CEO role, responsibilities, and best practices.    Recently, Cindy and Anthony lead a double blind survey of CEOs, seeking to discover the ROI of thought leadership. The survey included questions on thought leadership consumption, purchasing decisions, and more, all designed to shape insight on the effects of thought leadership, and guide CEO spending. The result was shocking! The data showed that the ROI was 156%, more than 16 times a typical marketing campaign's effectiveness. We wrap up the conversation discussing how Cindy and Anthony intend to tell the story of their research. They are writing a book which will be published in 2023, including survey data, information captured in follow-ups, the calculations used, and even a tool that companies can use to calculate their own thought leadership ROI! If you've ever tried to measure the impact of your org's thought leadership investment, this is a critical episode. Don't miss it! Three Key Takeaways: * Long-term surveys provide essential longitudinal data, showing change over time and tracking trends that underline permanent global shifts. * In order for thought leadership to flourish in an organization there needs to be an immense level of support from the CEOs - the TL team can't do it alone! * CEOs spend an average of 2 hours a week consuming thought leadership. To keep them engaged, you need to produce content that is rigorous, robust, and relevant.

A discussion of our 2022 Digital World Class Finance research findings with Principal & Global Finance Advisory Leader Jim O'Connor and Shawn Fitzgerald, who is a Senior Research Director in our Finance Advisory Practice.Show NotesWelcome to The Hackett Group's “Business Excelleration Podcast,” where week after week we hear from experts on how to avoid obstacles, manage detours and celebrate milestones on the journey to world-class performance. This final episode of the four-part series in Digital World Class research is hosted by Gary Baker, Group Global Communications director at The Hackett Group. His guests are Jim O'Connor, principal and global finance advisor leader, and Shawn Fitzgerald, senior research director. When it comes to the world of business today, Jim says, you have to either survive or die. For the last 18 years, The Hackett Group has conducted a study, and a top five goal of finance for the last five years has been to be an effective business partner. In a world with inflation, impending recession, talent shortages, etc., finance needs to be there to support a business. The Hackett Group has developed the Hackett Value Grid™ to articulate what is meant by the term Digital World Class™. It is a 2 inches by 2 inches model that looks at the dimension of business value and operational excellence. Often, you'll see companies who focus on one or the other dimension, but not both. The top 10% of companies performing across business value are called business value leaders. Digital World Class companies are those who have done a great job balancing the tensions and competing priorities of both dimensions. They are also in the top 25% performance of The Hackett Group's criteria for both. Transformation to Digital World Class can be broken down into a few big levers. These include technology enablement, data and analytics, and modernization of your overall architecture. In addition to these core levers, there are also core strategic best practices, which are more policy-related. First, you have to really think about your operating model and how and where you are deploying your services to the broader organization. Second, leaders orient themselves on an end-to-end process perspective, beginning with what the customer needs and drawing it in. This has become even more prevalent with the adoption of digital technology. At the end of the day, the most important thing is to find, develop and retain good talent. Next, Shawn highlights the differences between Digital World Class finance organizations and their peers in terms of performance. We see Digital World Class finance organizations' staff and resources fundamentally different from their peer groups. For example, they tend to have 25% more specialists and over 50% higher staffing levels focused on planning, forecast, and analysis. Turning toward automation, they also have less people focused on transaction work. On the finance side, they have 42% lower operational costs.  Finance cost is a percentage of revenue for all companies – not just those in Digital World Class. However, in Digital World Class, finance is seen as a business partner. In 2021, we saw these organizations operating at 44% of the 2011 index. While they have come down a bit in costs, they are also delivering more and upscaling capabilities. Great companies develop multiyear plans to undertake the Digital World Class finance transformation.  Addressing the top change activities organizations are undertaking, one of the most common is establishing a clear transformation road map and establishing executive support. You have to scale and be ready to go after it. The other thing Digital World Class organizations do better than their peers is measure their results...A complete list of show notes is available here for down

The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. Children Increased Grade Point Average and Learned Social Skills I would like to share this article on Pat Gesualdo. I had the privilege of interviewing him for my podcast. Please listen to this informative discussion with Pat.   In the study done in SURREY, ENGLAND/MONTVILLE, N.J. (August 27, 2014) –Drumming can help children with autism spectrum disorders and O.D.D. to stop violent behavior, self-mutilation, and assist with developing cognitive functioning, social skill interaction, and grade point average, according to the research team at the Woodland Grange School in Surrey England, and the non-profit research organization Drums and Disabilities, (D.A.D.) in Montville, NJ. For people with autism and cognitive disabilities, the synapses in the brain ineffectively communicate with each other. Playing repeated patterns of music can re-train these synapses, and can help these people re-establish the correct synapse pathways. The study was conducted by David Ciauro (EdS, MA,LAC), Pat Gesualdo, Senior Research Director for D.A.D. Christopher Topple, and Colin Jenkinson, Head Teacher for the Woodland Grange School. Playing repeated patterns of music rhythms which the researchers called “Drum Therapy,” helped the study participants to re-train the synapses in the brain, and develop physical and cognitive functioning. “The study participants in our school have stopped violent behavior, self mutilation, and have achieved a 100% attendance record, as a result of the Drum Therapy research,” says Head Teacher Colin Jenkinson. “Their parents and I are in total disbelief of their success.” Click Here or Click the link below for more details! https://naturallyrecoveringautism.com/146

It's kind of like for me it's just by analogy, I mean, kind of a scientist, if you're looking at some achievement, like technical achievement as being a top of a mountain and a scientist is trying to like hike, they're trying to be the first person to the summit. (06:28)- When you build an application, you kind of have to build a road, you have to be able to drive them with a car. And when you're building a platform on AWS or at Pinecone, you have to like build a city there. You have to really like, completely like to cover it. For me, the experience of building platforms and AWS was transformational because the way we think about problems is completely different. It's not about proving that something is possible, it is building the mechanisms that make it possible always for, in any circumstance. (13:43)- And so on and today with machine learning, you don't really have to do any of that. You have pre-trained NLP models that convert a string, like a, take a sentence in English to an embedding, to a high dimensional vector, such that the similarity or either the distance or the angle between them is analogous to the similarity between them in terms of like conceptual smelts semantic similarity.(18:17)- Almost always Pinecone ends up being a lot easier, a lot faster and a lot more production ready than what they would build in house. A lot more functional. We've spent two and a half years now baking a lot of really great features into Pinecone. And we're, we've just launched a version 2.0 that contains all sorts of filtering capabilities and cost reduction measures and you name it.    (21:22)- And so I'm a great believer in knowing your own data and knowing your own customers and training your own models. It doesn't mean that you have to train them from scratch. It doesn't mean you don't have to use the right tools. You don't have to reinvent the wheel, but I'm not a big believer in completely pre-trained, plucked off of a random place in the internet models. I do want to say that there are great models for just feature engineering for objects that don't change so much. So we have language models like BERT that transform text and create great embeddings and they're a good starting point. (31:01)- So I think you'll see two things. First of all, with Pinecone specifically, we're focused on really only two things; making it easy to use and get value out of Pinecone and making it cheaper. That's it! I mean that, those are the only two things we care about. Like if you can get a ton of value out of it and it doesn't cost you too much, that's it, you're a happy customer and we're happy to get you there. So that pretty much sums up all of our focus. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Tomorrow Congress will begin what is normally a brief ceremony, the counting of the Electoral Votes and the certification of the winners. But this time promises to be quite different. Vice President Pence will preside, and President Trump claimed in a tweet today that he will have the power to reject fraudulent electors, and set aside the results According to the Constitution and the relevant statute, that is not actually true, and an overwhelming majority of the U-S Senate seems to agree. But what does the law actually say, and how could this unfold tomorrow? For more on all of this, KCBS Radio news anchors Jeff Bell and Patti Reising along with KCBS Radio political reporter Doug Sovern, were joined by Stanford Law professor Nathan Persily, former Senior Research Director of the Presidential Commission on Election Administration and co-director of the Stanford-MIT Project on a Healthy Election.

Regular listeners will remember my interview with Joseph Goldberg from Tobii Pro where we discussed how their eye tracking technology makes it possible to know exactly where someone is looking which is an incredibly powerful tool for gaining unique and objective insight into human behavior. While this information can be used in a wide breadth of study fields, some of the main applications are found within the study of consumer behavior, acquired skillsets, situational awareness, and medical conditions such as Alzheimer's, dementia, and autism. However, I recently came across a fascinating report that highlighted how Tobii Pro's eye-tracking technology also helps identify what makes an effective broadcast TV commercial in a world full of mobile devices and other distractions. Tobii Pro's eye tracked participants in their actual homes as they watched TV between 2016 to 2018. Eye tracking provides unique, scientific insights on the elements of a TV commercial that grabbed or dropped viewers’ attention. Tobii Pro identified the best points to air a commercial and ideal length as well as gender and age differences in attention span. Some of the findings go against traditional thinking on what makes an effective commercial. It’s a treasure trove of data that’s super-relevant to ad agencies, ad buyers, brands, TV networks and listeners to my daily tech podcast that showcases the continued relevance of television as an advertising medium. I invited Mike Bartels, Senior Research Director at Tobii Pro Insight onto my podcast to find out more about the study. Mike's team conducts world-class attention research studies using advanced Tobii Pro eye-tracking technology. Their areas of expertise include shopper behavior, user experience, advertising effectiveness, media engagement, and professional development. I learn more about how Mike and his team at Tobii Pro strive to provide their clients with actionable insights that allow them to literally see the world through the eyes of their customers.

Dr. Maren Batalden from the Cambridge Health Alliance certainly hopes so. In fact, in her recent article on the subject, she and her co-authors assert that a form of co-production already exists in health care today — in the natural give-and-take between patients and providers around treatment and care decisions; and in the assets that patients and practitioners each bring to the table. But we have yet to realize the full promise of co-production — the opportunity to optimize this “collaboration” to achieve much better health and health outcomes. In other words, when patients and providers consciously work together, toward common goals, all kinds of possibilities open up.   Co-production does require a paradigm shift and for medical staff, letting go of seeing themselves as the sole engines and creators of the “product” known as health care. In fact, Dr. Batalden and her co-authors argue, health care isn’t a product at all, but a service which both “sides” engage in and have an opportunity to shape. At its most basic level co-production is an exciting new way to frame mutually respectful, helpful relationships, including among clinical staff. Dr. Batalden says it best: “Health care is not a product manufactured by the health care system, but rather a service which is co-created by health care professionals in relationship with one another and with people seeking help to restore or maintain health for themselves and their families.   These are the conversations and concepts that make up the excellent March 24 WIHI: The New World of Co-Producing Health and Health Care.

Listen NowRisk adjustment is a statistical method by which payers can reasonably predict how much a patient's care needs are expected to cost in any given year.  In so called Fee-For-Service Medicare this matter is essentially moot since since providers are simply paid for the reimbursable services they provide their patients.  However, health care payment is rapidly moving towards fixed or pre-arranged reimbursement models.  For example, Medicare Advantage plans are paid a pre-determined or fixed per member per month fee and ACOs are incented to spend less annually than a pre-determined benchmark that amounts to an ACO's patients' historical costs risk adjusted.  Therefore, risk adjustment, or getting risk adjustment right, becomes critically important.  During this 23 minute discussion Dr. Book explains the theory behind risk adjustment, how it's calculated for Medicare Advantage plans using hierarchical condition categories (HCC) codes and demographic data, the phenomenon known as "up coding," what CMS has done to address the issue and whether predicted costs tend to be lower than actual costs for high cost beneficiaries is a problem.Dr. Robert Book is a Health Economist and Senior Research Director at the Health Systems  Innovation Network.   (His paper discussed during this interview was authored via his work with the American Action Forum.)  Dr. Book's work primarily focuses on modeling of the effects of the ACA.   He has also expertise in a wide variety of related issues including Medicare and Medicare Advantage pricing, provider incentives, employer-sponsored insurance, drug regulation and the economics of medical research.  Dr. Book earned his Ph.D. in economics and his MBA at the University of Chicago, an MA in computational and applied mathematics at Rice and his undergraduate in mathematics at Duke.     Dr. Book's primer on Medicare Advantage risk adjustment is at: http://americanactionforum.org/research/primer-medicare-risk-adjustment.For a discussion on Medicare Advantage pricing more generally see the May 6, 2013 interview with Dr. Brian Biles.    This is a public episode.
