God's Word for Today12 Dec, 20243 The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.4 A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.5 A fool despises his father's instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is prudent.- Prov 15:3-5 ESV THE EYES OF THE LORD The Lord is a Spirit. Hence, He has no physical eyes. God communicates to us about His all-knowing attribute by using a language we understand. He uses parts of our body like the eyes. Our eyes are for seeing only things in front of us but God sees everything simultaneously at all times. Nothing escapes from the Lord's eyes. His eyes are watching everywhere and are seeing all things thoroughly (Heb 4:13). God saw the sin of David of adultery with Bathseba although he tried to conceal it. He sent Nathan to confront him.[2 Sam 12:9] Ananias and Sapphira lied before God the Spirit. Peter asked, "Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God" (Acts 5:4). Their sin cost Ananias and his wife Sapphira their lives (Acts 5:5, 9–10). The Lord also sees the good works of the righteous and rewards them accordingly.[Heb 6:10]. Jesus says, “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. 41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet 's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person 's reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward." [Mat 10:42-42]Solomon compares a gentle tongue to a tree of life. A properly nourished tree grows and provides shade and refreshment for all who seek its shelter. A fruit-bearing tree provides sustenance for those who take in what it produces. In the same manner, encouraging words coming from a wise tongue provide refreshment and sustenance for those who hear. This applies to both friends and enemies. Calm, truthful, and gentle words to others are received compared hateful, spiteful, or "perverse" reactions. Conversely, perverse words could break the spirit. Paul warned us, “writes: "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear."[Eph 4:29]Prudence and foolishness are seen in one's attitude towards God's instructions and reproofs. While the prudent heeds reproof the foolish despises it. This contrast shows the disparity of the values between the prudent and foolish, respectively Today. may we would be sensitive and teachable hearts towards Him, who sees everything so that our words will be gentle ministering to all those who hear. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/koinonia-bijbelstudie-live--595091/support.

Remember back to the last episode, David was confronted by Nathan about his sin with Bathsheba and Nathan had some stunning words to say on God‘s behalf to David. We can only think that these works played on David's mind again and again. David and Bathseba had eaten bread in secret, but Nathan on behalf of God knew the truth and he had these things to say to David, he said, “I anointed you King over Israel and delivered you from the hand of Saul. I gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your keeping, and gave you the house of Israel and Judah and if that had been too little, I would've given you much more, why have you despised the commandments of the Lord to do evil in his sight.  You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, you have taken his wife to be your wife and you have killed him with the sword of the people of Ammon. Therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and taken the wife of the Hittite to be your wife. Behold, I will raise adversity against you from your own house, and I will take your wives before you eyes and give them to your neighbor and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of his son.  For you did it secretly but I will do this thing before all of Israel and before the son. However, there were many years and this prophecy did not come to pass, in fact David ruled righteously and successfully and his kingdom grew and became quite strong.  However, this did not shield David from what was coming. He would face the greatest challenge of his entire life in the fulfillment of this coming prophecy because it would come from someone inside his own family.  It would feature lust, it would feature incestuous relationships, it would feature a vengeance killing and I coupe de ta. In addition to all this David would lose his closest friend and advisor. The lesson to be learned is this. Bread eaten in secret can be sweet, sin may bring pleasure in the short term. But it also can be very costly.  David would learn this first hand in the fulfillment of this prophecy.  Like many people, the great King found that it was fun to dance but not often fun to pay the band.  Pastor Harris will discuss these issues in this episode.Support the show

God maintains a remnant of His people on the earth that will not reject the truth or backslide into apostasy (Romans 11:5). In his humble, steadfast way, Brother John encourages our congregation by reviewing recent lessons dispensed by our ministry. First, he examines the history of Israel as God's chosen people who, though delivered from Egyptian bondage, retained the spirit of Egypt in their hearts for generations. Their rebellion repeatedly brought God's judgment upon them, yet His mercy supersedes human weakness. Then, using the example of David's sin with Bathseba, he demonstrates the right attitude for a child of God to maintain a penitent heart and contrite spirit so God's Spirit can be renewed in us.

Finally, he "sin-stacked" and killed her husband in hope that it would cover up what he had done. 1 Kings 15:1-5 ESV Now in the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam the son of Nebat, Abijam began to reign over Judah. 2 He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Maacah the daughter of Abishalom. 3 And he walked in all the sins that his father did before him, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father. 4 Nevertheless, for David's sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, setting up his son after him, and establishing Jerusalem, 5 because David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. HAVE A HEART WHOLLY TRUE TO THE LORD. Abijah succeeded his father Rehoboam. He had reigned in Judah for only three years before he died. Like father like son. He was a wicked king. “He he walked in all the sins that his father did before him, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father” (v.3). Due to his attempts to reclaim the northern ten tribes of Israel as part of his kingdom, there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam throughout his reign (v. 6). He should have followed the Lord wholly with his heart as David. But, he did not. God had just favored him because of His covenant to David. God gave him a son to succeed him and protect Jerusalem. In other words, God is always faithful to His covenant. Interestingly, God had recognized David that ‘ did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.'[v.5]. In God's eyes, he was right despite his sins with Bathseba and to Uriah. In a seemingly contradictions, we may exclaim, “What an amazing God we have!” “The statement in question is by no means a pronouncement of David's virtual sinlessness for several reasons. First of all, it is a general and true characterization of David's life. Just as Job was not sinless, but was called “blameless and upright” (Job 1:1), even so David's life was without major fault. Second, this commendation of David is not absolute, but relative to all the sins Abijam had committed (cf. 1 Kings 15:1, 3). David did, with one major exception, “that which was right in the eyes of the Lord” (v. 5). Third, even when he sinned, he did what was right, namely repented immediately when confronted by God (cf. 2 Sam. 12:1ff and 1 Chron. 21:8). Fourth, the exception clause (“except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite”) is not found in many manuscripts of the OT, including the Vatican Ms. Without it, the point that this was only a general commendation of David has even stronger force. Fifth, the phrase “had not turned aside” indicates that God is speaking of the generally steadfast direction of David's life, not every specific sin in it. This would account for why David's other sins are not mentioned, since they did not turn him from the generally forward direction of his life in serving the Lord to this point.”[ from https://defendinginerrancy.com/bible-solutions/1_Kings_15.5.php] ------------------------- Visit and FOLLOW Gospel Light Filipino on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram

Temptation is a desire to engage in short-term urges for enjoyment that threatens long-term goals. In the context of some religions, temptation is the inclination to sin.Temptation also describes the coaxing or inducing a person into committing such an act, by manipulation or otherwise of curiosity, desire or fear of loss something important to a person. Temptations have been around since the beginning of time. Adam and Eve were tested in the Garden of Eden and succumbed to that temptation. King David was tempted by Bathseba, succumbed to that temptation, and paid a heavy price. Jesus himself was tempted after spending forty days in the desert, only he defeated the devil at his game. I have even succumbed to temptation and paid some heavy prices. Succumbing to temptation is a choice. We can NEVER blame others for succumbing to our temptations. The decision lies squarely in or hands. In all temptations lets us consider not what he offers but what we shall loose. See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. (Hebrews 12:14-16) Try to live at peace with everyone! Live a clean life. If you don't, you will never see the Lord. Make sure that no one misses out on God's wonderful kindness. Don't let anyone become bitter and cause trouble for the rest of you. Watch out for immoral and ungodly people like Esau, who sold his future blessing for only one meal. (Hebrews 12:14-16 CEV) My dear friends, our challenge today returns us to one of the most terrible vices that sometimes find its way into our lives as Christians. The Bible refers to it as the root of bitterness. It calls it poison; it spreads, festers and defiles. It is dangerous; it ends up killing the one who lets it in. Don't let it have room in your life. Many have fallen victim to its deadly grip. Run from it with all your might. It requires great effort from us as we live in a world of sin, but Jesus, our elder brother, went through life without bitterness, and so can we. Many times, the reason for the bitterness is genuine but can anything be worth such costs? I dare say no. Bitterness brings out the beast in us. It makes a beautiful person ugly. It defaces the owner. Absalom would know. The Bible records that he was a very handsome young man, much loved by everyone. He let bitterness take root, and it destroyed him and caused much harm. What happened? His brother Amnon raped his sister, Tamar. It was disgraceful, annoying, shameful and most uncalled for. He said nothing (bitter people sometimes carry on like nothing's amiss). He was angry with his brother for raping his sister but more so mad with his father for doing nothing about it. Absalom for two years did nothing, said neither good nor bad to Amnon. Everyone must have thought that it's all-good until Absalom carried out his plot of killing his brother Amnon. He did not stop there; he plotted to take over his father's throne, won the people's heart, but bitterness defiles and its end is always bad. Absalom ended up with his hair caught up on the branch of a tree. The aftermath of trying to go after his father. Bitterness will take the life of its owner. Do not let it in. It is not worth the trouble and pain that accompanies it. Ahitophel was a good man, a trusted official. He was righteous, and his counsel was sound. He never missed it until one bitter man hooked up with another. He was grandfather to Bathseba, wife of Uriah whom David killed. He knew it was a wrong thing David did, and when it was time to advise Absalom against David, what did he recommend? 'Sleep with your father's wives in the open.' In other words, do exactly what your father did to my grandbaby. Notice he started as David's adviser; he never said anything about David's crime, but we find that he was bitter. We learn from the story of his life that the poison of bitterness destroys from inside. Ahitophel ended up committing suicide because his counsel which until that point in time had never been rejected, was not taken. Bitterness will hang you if you don't hang it. The account is in 2 Samuel 13, 14 & 15 Beloved, who are you intensely angry with? You were wronged we agree, but would you let bitterness take your life? It is not worth that trouble. You may have to endure shame, abuse, disgrace, whatever. They may abandon you, leave you alone with the children or worse still, kill your loved ones. Whatever they did, you are the one suffering.

2 Sam 18:9-18 ESV 9 And Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was suspended between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on. 10 And a certain man saw it and told Joab, “Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.” 11 Joab said to the man who told him, “What, you saw him! Why then did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have been glad to give you ten pieces of silver and a belt.” 12 But the man said to Joab, “Even if I felt in my hand the weight of a thousand pieces of silver, I would not reach out my hand against the king's son, for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, ‘For my sake protect the young man Absalom.' 13 On the other hand, if I had dealt treacherously against his life (and there is nothing hidden from the king), then you yourself would have stood aloof.” 14 Joab said, “I will not waste time like this with you.” And he took three javelins in his hand and thrust them into the heart of Absalom while he was still alive in the oak. 15 And ten young men, Joab's armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck him and killed him. 16 Then Joab blew the trumpet, and the troops came back from pursuing Israel, for Joab restrained them. 17 And they took Absalom and threw him into a great pit in the forest and raised over him a very great heap of stones. And all Israel fled every one to his own home. 18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself the pillar that is in the King's Valley, for he said, “I have no son to keep my name in remembrance.” He called the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom's monument to this day. AN ABUSE OF POWER. There is no doubt that David had his trust to his nephew-general, Joab. He was the son of Zeruiah, David's half sister. He became the commander in David's service when David was ruler of Judah in the south while one of Saul's remaining sons, Ishbosheth, was still ruling northern Israel. Ishboseth's commander. Then, Abner eventually had a pact with David. But, Joab killed Abner treacherously in revenge for Killing Asahel, Joab's brother.[2 Sam 3:27] And, instead of punishing him, David washed his hands that he had nothing to do with it. Simply put, he tacitly approved it. Moreover, Joab had complied with David's order to murder Uriah as a cover-up for his adultery with Bathseba. It was a clean and perfect concealment. He knew what makes David happy. And here, when Absalom tried to escape and his long hair was stuck at a branch, the other officers refused to kill him. Without hesitation, he shot three darts into Absalom's heart and buried his corpse in a pit. Obviously, he didn't honor David's word, much more the rebel son Absalom. Simply put, as David's hatchet man, Joab was drunk with power. He was so quick and impulsive in taking things in his hands. Having power is as having a fertile ground for the weeds of pride to grow. And, its glitter is blinding and deafening to one's eyes and ears, respectively. Joab had gone overboard that he wasn't even bothered to disrespect David. “Pride is concerned with who is right. Humility is concerned with what is right.”[anonymous] “For pride is spiritual cancer: it eats up the very possibility of love, or contentment, or even common sense.” C.S. Lewis

2 Sam 15:30-37 ESV 30 But David went up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went, barefoot and with his head covered. And all the people who were with him covered their heads, and they went up, weeping as they went. 31 And it was told David, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” 32 While David was coming to the summit, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat torn and dirt on his head. 33 David said to him, “If you go on with me, you will be a burden to me. 34 But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king; as I have been your father's servant in time past, so now I will be your servant,' then you will defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel. 35 Are not Zadok and Abiathar the priests with you there? So whatever you hear from the king's house, tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. 36 Behold, their two sons are with them there, Ahimaaz, Zadok's son, and Jonathan, Abiathar's son, and by them you shall send to me everything you hear.” 37 So Hushai, David's friend, came into the city, just as Absalom was entering Jerusalem. PRAYER AND ACTION. Definitely, David was broken. He went up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went, barefoot and with his head covered. And all the people who were with him covered their heads, and they went up, weeping as they went. His pain had aggravated when he knew that one of his trusted advisers Ahithopel conspired with Absalom against him. Why? Most probably, he lost respect to David who by his abuse of authority had gone to Bathseba, his granddaughter to have an illicit sexual encounter and murder of the husband Uriah later. [2 Sam 23:34] The root of bitterness may had soured his soul. [Heb 12:15] David turned this pain into a prayer, ”O Lord, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” Surely, God works through answering our prayers. But, prayer that works is accompanied by actions. These are the evidences that we believe our prayers, are they not? Thus, David devised a plan to foil the counsel of Ahithopel. He told Hushai the Archite, “If you go on with me, you will be a burden to me. But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king; as I have been your father's servant in time past, so now I will be your servant,' then you will defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel. Are not Zadok and Abiathar the priests with you there? So whatever you hear from the king's house, tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. Behold, their two sons are with them there, Ahimaaz, Zadok's son, and Jonathan, Abiathar's son, and by them you shall send to me everything you hear.”[v.34-36] Praying and acting don't contradict. Through our prayers, God would either open doors or provide wisdom as to the next stap to take. Hence, Solomon had counseled; “ Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” {Prov 3:5,6] Today, for every need, let's pray first and foremost. Yet, we must plan and act upon our prayers.

This week we review the "Insidious" franchise. There are four movies total. The series was created/written by Leigh Whannel and James Wan. They also directed and produced several of the movies. We reviewed their other series "The Conjuring" in episode 7 and "Saw" in episode 28. Talk about some busy people! Joseph Bishara did the music for the "Insidious" franchise and played the lipstick faced demon. Did you know he also played Bathseba and the Annabelle demon in "The Conjuring"? Pretty cool.    One of the most interesting things at this franchise is that the main character turns out to be a something something year old woman. You dont typically see that in horror movies and it's a breath of fresh air. Lin Shaye does an excellent job of making us care and root for Elise.    GeeksWhoEat has also created a cocktail based on the series. The Further cocktail has a smokey blue color reminiscent of the purgatory that the Lamberts and Elise often visited. Check it out here    Music Credit: Here Photo Credit: Here

God forgave David, but that didn’t mean that the nation was healed. From then on they’d be walking wounded. It is the same for us. We know that we’ve been forgiven of our sins, but we often still feel the consequences of those sins. Sin isn’t just about the vertical relationship we have with God. Sin affects our human, earthly relationships. However rather than discarding David for his indiscretion God chooses to use him. David was an adulterer. He abused his power and killed his lover’s husband. But God still had a future for him. David married Bathsheba. And from that union Solomon is born. God created something beautiful and enduring out of something so outrageous and ugly.  God wouldn’t allow the worst moments and basest actions of a broken person impede what God wanted for the people of Israel. We are in a series called “Legends of the Fall,” which is all about the “bad” people or the “bad” stories in the bible and how it relates to who we are. We tend to want to look at “bad” guys in a story and say “that could never be me because I’m really a good person,” but we are exactly like those bad guys. Today we look at an incestual story of rape; we look at Amnon. It is important to remember that the story of Amnon immediately follows the story of David and Bathsheba. Even though God forgives David for his sin, there is still a price that get’s paid (not to God, but when we model bad behavior to our kids). The prophet Nathan in 2 Sam 12:10-12 warned David of what was going to happen for not leaving a proper legacy for his children. David’s sin of sexual abuse now its way directly into his family. We have a tendency to think that our sin only affects us, but it does not, sin permeates all aspects of our life and community.

For every Goliath we seem to be able to defeat, there is a temptation, like Bathsheba, waiting to take hold of our hearts.
