We are all too often bombarded by disturbing and distressing media and this can be extremely overwhelming for sensitive people. We can find it extremely challenging to manage the intensity of emotions that are often felt from over-witnessing suffering and violence in our media. As a result, we can spend a great deal of energy intentionally avoiding being exposed. Some things are, however, simply can't be avoided. In this insightful interview, Dr Melanie Joy shares the psychology of why we turn away from the things we desire to change the most and shines a light on common misconceptions around what is required to instigate change. Melanie discusses how easy it is for our nervous systems to become dysregulated without adequate self-care to build resilience around challenging issues and gives practical suggestions for self-regulation strategies. We will all grieve at some point - not only because grief comes in many forms (not only from the death of a loved one) but also because death is a natural part of being human. Yet we live in a grief and trauma illiterate society which often isolates and harms those doing their best to keep their head above water and find their way forward through and beyond painful life experiences.  All trauma involves grief / not all grief involves trauma. As an HSP, our experience of grief (including traumatic grief) can be even more intense, and in some cases complicated, than for others. It can feel scary, we might feel like we're 'doing it wrong,' and internal and external judgment often adds a whole new layer of pain or grief to what we're navigating. Robbie and Philippa are taking a break to spend time with their families over the summer. We considered taking a break from the podcast too but in this episode we talk about out thought process and why we decided to keep the episodes coming out even while we're away. It was a very intentional decision but is one we wanted to explain as we truly believe that taking a break from our every day lives, if we are able to do so, is really important. Important for everyone but especially HSPs. To make really good use of a break, we need time to make sure our soul is getting what it needs. Space in our day and enough downtime is vital to let whatever needs to be created by our soul come to the surface. Make time in your schedule for a break even if you don't know what you're going to do with it. What needs to happen will come. Practicing intentional self-discovery after experiencing transitions (relationship/friendship/family/health/life changes, moves, career changes, etc) as well as learning about the trait of high sensitivity is crucial for reconnecting with our truest authentic selves and ensuring that we live in alignment with our current needs and values. Transitions have a way of reshaping us, sometimes causing us to lose touch with our innermost essence. By intentionally engaging in self-discovery, we create a space for introspection and reflection, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of who we are and what we truly want. As HSPs, one of the greatest challenges we face is managing our energy and our thoughts. This can wreak havoc when it comes to our well-being, productivity, and sense of self-value.  It is often helpful to consider that we are not our minds. Even though our minds can feel so prominent to us as HSPs because of how extensively we are processing.  The nature of who we are does not reside in our minds and thoughts. The truth of who we are is a much deeper experience.  In this episode, we consider the pain associated with the false self we tend to identify with at the cost of our real sense of self. We look at the energetics of this. In other words, the energetic sensations we experience in our bodies, our hearts, and intuitive senses.  We explore how we can learn to gradually shift our awareness back into self-ownership and experience the truth of who we are. A shift that can relieve us of a great deal of difficulty and lead us to a true sense of purpose, belonging, and self.   Willow McIntosh is the founder of Inluminance and creator of the High Sensory Coaching Program. The trait of high sensitivity is becoming more and more widely known in the world these days. We are beginning to understand the advantages as well as learning how to manage our challenges.  It is most encouraging to know that the trait is genetic and not caused through trauma or conditioning. It is naturally occurring and designed to give the human race an advantage. Our ability to process more deeply allows us to perceive and understand the world differently. It is understood that initially, nature gave us this ability to be aware of more in our surroundings to give us an evolutionary advantage for our survival.  As we have evolved, so has our ability to utilize these abilities in the world. We are able to see a wider picture of information around us, especially in our own natural area of purpose and competence.  This week we will look at the various areas of life that benefit greatly from our wider perspective such as schooling, the classroom and education, healthcare and wellbeing, and the corporate world of employees and managers. In a recent survey of 326 HSPs collected over five days between December 17-22, 2022 over 90% of HSPs have had thoughts of suicide. over 18% have attempted suicide almost 33% use alcohol or drugs to numb emotional pain. We can learn a lot from this survey on how to support and save HSP lives. Things that were named that make it hard to cope Overwhelming and intense emotions Sensory overload Absorbing the suffering of others and the world Feeling different and misunderstood Not understanding how to support their sensitivity 3 AREAS THAT HELP + RECOMMENDED RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THOSE NEEDS In the survey, HSPs also identified three main areas that helped them cope, which we can use to help others. Within each of the three areas, I have resources. Learning About the Trait of High Sensitivity Self-Care the HSP Way Supportive People 1. Learning about their trait of high sensitivity made them feel less alone in how they experienced the world opened up a window to understanding themselves. helped explain why they experienced the world the way they did helped them understand why they always felt different from those around them. It also helped them understand, accept, and honor that their self-care needs look different than most. These factors improved wellness, self-esteem, self-compassion, and coping ability. 2. Self-Care the HSP Way HSPs reported that when they started being consistent about specific types of self-care that reduced sensory overload and supported the sensitive nervous system, their mental and physical health improved, offering greater resiliency and coping skills. 3. Supportive People Those that reported having supportive people around them named it as one of the key factors in improving wellness and mental health. Immediate Resources If you know someone who is struggling with thoughts of suicide, let them know they are not alone and that there is immediate help available 24 hours a day. They can call, text, or chat at 988, and you will be connected to trained counselors in the United States at the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, always available 24 hours a day, free and confidential. Internationally, you can find suicide hotlines in your country at the International Association for Suicide Prevention.
