Earlier this year, we described Los Angeles act 1morning as one of the funkiest young producers in modern-day techno. And we stand by it. The fast-rising upstart is building a solid fan base around North America and beyond with a rugged, vintage style of swung techno and hardgroove. His all-vinyl DJ sets and pumping productions on the likes of Fixed Rhythms and Mála Ádh stand out for their distinctly old-school flavour—steamrolling hi-hats à la Robert Hood, swift choppage behind the decks and deep, deep grooves. Like many of his all-vinyl heroes, he's also a treat to watch behind the decks The up-and-comer had a hell of a year in 2023, from playing in Japan to going on his first European tour, and his momentum shows no signs of slowing. He debuted at New York's dweller festival this year and K9 Unit, his duo with Bloodhound, recently did a night with fellow hardgroove king Regal86. It's only a matter of time until 1morning gets to a festival or a club near you so until then, enjoy his RA Podcast for now. The mix unfortunately came with some less than stellar circumstances, as the records 1morning pulled were stolen from his car, and so instead this RA Podcast became a statement of resilience and creativity—and, in his words, "an outlet for my rage." @1morning Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/932

The world of canine policing is a fascinating landscape filled with unique partnerships and intriguing challenges. This detailed exploration of police dogs and their handlers provides a rich insight into a side of law enforcement that often goes unnoticed.  Canine policing involves a special bond between a canine officer and their four-legged ally. Corporal Wes Ducheney from the Pinellas Park Police Department shares his journey, shedding light on the intense tryout process, challenges, and victories that come with being part of such a special unit. The relationship between a handler and their dog goes way beyond mere companionship – they're true partners and sometimes the only line of defense.  Police dogs undergo intense training to prepare them for the rigors of law enforcement. Their handlers play a crucial role in this process, helping them navigate every imaginable scenario or situations imaginable.Handlers not only need to teach their dogs how to do their jogs, they also have to teach them how to switch from work to regular dog mode, ensuring they can respond to different situations appropriately.  In the end, what stands out most in the world of canine policing is the unique bond between these dogs and their handlers. This bond goes beyond a working relationship; it forms the foundation for their effectiveness in capturing criminals and serving their communities. This bond also contributes significantly to the social interactions between the unit and the community, often serving as a bridge to foster better relationships and mutual understanding.  Police dogs are an integral part of law enforcement, playing a critical role in maintaining law and order. Through their dedication, loyalty, and extraordinary abilities, they make a significant contribution to our communities. The world of canine policing is a testament to the incredible partnership between man and his best friend, a partnership that safeguards our society.See photos of the Pinellas Park Police Department K9 unit in the show notes: https://www.urbandogstudio.com/lets-bark-about-it-tampa-bay/6fk4fq6huybufpvqwfhvcfghl84z5tHave you ever thought about capturing professional portraits of your furry family member? Breaking News: Retired Estes Park Police K9 Unit involved in Attack

The Colorado Switchblade

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 18, 2022 15:57

Correction August 18th, 8:33pm - A mistake was made in our reporting that the victim of the attack was not Diego's handler but another person at the residence. The Colorado Switchblade recently learned that the retired Estes Park K9 Unit Diego was involved in an attack on a person in his handler's residence. The incident occurred on August 3rd at approximately 9:28 PM. Medical care was required however, the extent of the injuries to the handler is still unconfirmed. After submitting a Colorado Open Records Request and reaching out to the public information officers for the Town of Estes Park, Greeley Police Department, and the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, confirmation and statements were given to the Colorado Switchblade. According to Estes Park Police (EPPD) Interm Chief Corey Pass: "On 080322 at 9:28 pm EPPD officers were dispatched to a home in Estes Park where a woman was screaming for help. Upon arrival, officers learned the woman had been attacked by a dog. Officers assisted medical personnel in helping the victim, who was transported to Estes Park Health. Due to the fact that the address and dog belonged to a former EPPD officer, it was decided to request the Larimer County Sheriff's Office conduct the investigation. "Our thoughts are with the victim and the family. We are doing everything we can to support them and, at the same time, respect their privacy in this difficult and private matter. We greatly appreciate the Larimer County Sheriff's Office for its support in assuming responsibility for investigating this case."Also included in the statement was a brief history of the K9 Unit's tenure with the EPPD:"When our trained K9 handler alerted us he was leaving Estes Park for another agency, EPPD conferred with experts in K9 programs at other agencies across the state. These experts supported our goal of transferring Diego to a new agency since we do not have another K9 handler or potential handler among our officers. Diego left service with EPPD and was briefly owned by Greeley PD, but he was retired by Greeley PD after a difficult transition. Greeley PD elected to retire Diego to his original handler as a pet. According to the Greeley PD Public Information Officer, Kent Keller:“I talked to my K9 guys and was told that we had K9 Diego for one day. The handler that we tried and the dog did not have a bond, which is not uncommon in the K9 handler world, I'm told, so we gave him back and began searching elsewhere for a better match.”He added in a second email about documentation on Diego's transfer to Greeley PD and back: “While dogs changing agencies/handlers isn't an everyday thing, it's not uncommon by any means either as handlers retire or leave the department before the dog is ready to. But it was likely just us calling back EPPD and saying, The dog and handler aren't bonding; we're gonna pass on him, thanks.” It's not a big official thing or anything. Kind of related, the bonding is a big portion of K9 handling. Our handlers meet and handle multiple dogs in the selection process to find a dog that fits the handler well and vice versa.”The Colorado Switchblade also asked the following questions of the Town of Estes Park's PIO: Can you tell me what K-9 standards the town used? Our policy states: Canine teams will be trained using proven techniques and methodologies established through the standards set forth by the Colorado and Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Service Dog Program or an established comparable program at the discretion of the Chief or their designee for narcotics-detector dogs and patrol dogs. The standards that both the K9 and handler were certified under are the Utah POST PSP-1.What part of the town's website would I be able to find the public records/documentation that was necessary for the creation of the K-9 unit, and do you know what the costs were in total for the program?Permission for the program came from the Chief of Police and the Town Administrator in Fall 2018. Funds were raised through donations from the community and outside sources. The total collected was $92,000, which was spent solely on K9 needs, including the K9 vehicle and training of both the dog and the handler. The K9 program was presented to EPPD staff on Nov. 18, 2018. The first donation was received on March 18, 2019. Diego was selected and purchased on September 12, 2019. The handler and K9 graduated from training, and Diego was sworn in on March 10, 2020. Also, do you know what the status of Diego is now? Has he been euthanized? Please check with the Sheriff's Office to see if they can help. We want to honor our partner agency's role, and it's not our information to share. Any word on the condition of the Handler? Was it the original K-9 officer? Because I thought he had to leave town. Please check with the Larimer County Sheriff to see if this is information they have. We want to honor our partner agency's role, and it's not our information to share. Was there a particular company or agency that the town used to acquire Diego? If so, which was it?A team of 2 experts from Loveland PD, 1 K9 veterinarian, the EPPD handler, and EPPD Sergeant all researched several kennels, and ultimately, all parties flew down to Florida, where they found Diego. Several dogs at different kennels were considered and put through a variety of tests and medical exams before a dog was selected. Diego was obtained on September 19, 2019, from a kennel known as Police Service Dogs in Oxnard, Florida. How long was the active tenure of Diego with the Estes Park Police Department?Diego was sworn in with EPPD on 03/10/20 until 07/13/22You can find more information on the Town of Estes Park's now stopped K9 Unit on their webpage here. This story is still ongoing and will be updated as more information becomes available. Ruby is an extremely hyperactive half border collie that has been adopted multiple times from the shelter she's been in over the last six months, but always later returned due to an inability to train or control her.Rhode Island state trooper Daniel O'Neil has dreamed of joining the K-9 search and rescue team of the state police. However, he has been rejected seven times and he only has one last chance to qualify before he turns 30.Daniel learns that the K-9 unit has no funds to import any more German Shepherds, the breed usually used in search and rescue teams, and therefore he would not be able to join the program. He finds out his wife Mel(issa) is pregnant with their second child, making him even more determined to go for it. The promotion would also improve his pay and benefits.Pat, an advocate at the shelter, begs her workmate Rick to give Ruby a little more time. He announces that in the evening they will put her down. Dan discovers a K-9 dog doesn't have to be a German Shepherd, but curious, agile and spirited. Then he visits the shelter, and Pat convinces him to adopt Ruby to train her and join the program. The story then follows Dan's attempts to train Ruby, their failures and their successes. They both are high-energy, enthusiastic and have to discover how to work together effectively.Captain Zarella explains that after an entry exam, those accepted do six weeks intensive training. To enter, dog and owner must have the right temperament, focus, calmness and compassion. Ruby does well until finally, impatient, she wiggles free, riling up a bee's nest. Out of the official training, Mel reminds Dan he got through the police academy with dyslexia and hyperactivity, so maybe he should try homeschooling Ruby.At the exam at six weeks, Ruby passes. They wait for months on their junior team, until finally they are needed. Sent to a home where a murder victim is meant to be, Ruby senses human remains, but Dan can't find them. Disappointed, he ignores her, dejected. She runs off during the night, only to have Zarella tell him the remains were found at the scene where Ruby indicated, but buried beneath concrete, Zarella tells Dan it was amazing that Ruby caught the scent, and he should have trusted his K9 partner. Dan frantically searches for Ruby, finally finding her.Dan and Ruby join the search teams seeking Michael, a boy who got lost while hiking. They find him in the rain and dark, and the boy turns out to be Pat's son.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

In this archive episode, Dennis explains how a certain case did not disallow officers from making prolonged motor vehicle stops when there is PC or awaiting K-9 Units. Recorded on 05/23/2018. Rodriguez v US 2015 does not disallow Police Officers prolonging motor vehicle stops while awaiting the arrival of backup or a K9 Unit. It only required officers to have a Reasonable Suspicion of Criminal Activity before doing so. Remember the timelines change when a traffic stop turns into a criminal investigation. Citing Rodriguez - Criminal detentions generally require probable cause that the suspect is engaged in criminal activity, but an officer may conduct a traffic stop if the officer has a reasonable, articulable suspicion that the driver is engaging in criminal activity.[5] The Supreme Court of the United States has held that investigative detentions, including traffic stops, "must be temporary and last no longer than is necessary to effectuate the purpose of the stop."[6] Consequently, traffic stops may become unreasonable if they are unnecessarily prolonged.[7] When an officer conducts a traffic stop based on reasonable suspicion that the driver has committed a traffic violation, the Fourth Amendment permits the officer to conduct a number of investigative inquiries before resolving the traffic stop.[8] For example, officers may question the vehicle's occupants about matters unrelated to the traffic violation, and officers may walk a drug detection dog around the outside of the vehicle during the stop.[9] Officers may briefly prolong traffic stops to conduct these inquiries so long as the officer performs his tasks in an amount of time "reasonably needed to effectuate" the law enforcement purpose of the stop.[10]

It would be fair to say that Shaun has seen his fair share of violence and depravity throughout his life. In fact, more like many lives worth. But it has not defined the man he has become today. Despite it trying its very best. Shaun O’Gorman is a highly accomplished and recognised Retired Police Officer and former member of the Queensland Police Dog Squad, or K9 Unit. After joining the force at the tender age of 19, Shaun worked his way up to the K9 unit at just age 22. His normal ‘every day’ would consist of anything from violent domestic disturbances, armed hold-ups, vehicle pursuits or large brawls. Shaun also worked as a tactical dog handler with the Special Emergency Response Team (SWAT). Several years later he joined the Covert and Surveillance Unit working on Major and Organised Crime syndicates trafficking in narcotics and other serious criminal activities. Shaun thought he was living his dream with every night filled with excitement, violence and the opportunity to push himself to his limits and help others. He loved his career. But it did not last. After a period of time, he realised that he was unfulfilled and becoming more angry, reactive and violent. He was in weekly fist fights and was encountering more and more violent offenders. He actively sought out confrontations as he became more and more addicted to the adrenaline and the opportunity to prove he was tough and fearless as a way to try to manage the significant impact his career was having on him. Shaun left the Police when he was 31 and began a very dark time in his life. He had lost the career, his identity and felt like a failure. The violence and depravity he had seen human beings perpetrate against each other meant he lost all faith in humanity. He suffered Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, clinical depression, drank excessively, was very angry and came extremely close to suicide many times.  What followed was a 17-year journey of personal development courses, study, education, working with coaches and mentors and finding every piece of information possible on resilience, stress and leadership – with an end goal of healing himself and becoming an effective leader in his own life. He now devotes his life to helping others using the knowledge, education and experience that helped him help himself. While forging a successful corporate executive career after leaving the Police, Shaun developed and now continues to follow his passion for helping other people. How to Detect Explosives in Seconds

Jess Wisse (JW): What's behind the science and inventions that impact our daily lives? Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Pods of Science are the stories of what happens before the breakthrough. Before a technology becomes a house-hold name, before the life-saving drug his pharmacy shelves, before the paper's published - see what happens when great minds meet great challenges. Music Welcome. I’m your host, Jess Wisse. On today’s episode we’ll talking about new technology that may give dogs a run for their money. Wondering what we’re talking about? Stay tuned to learn more. Music JW: Floppy-eared sniffer dogs made the news earlier this year as the latest change to security procedures in airports. But in the not-too-distant future, they could be replaced. The replacement is a technology that doesn’t require a scratch behind the ear and a treat to its job. Meet the man behind the tech: Robert Ewing. Robert Ewing (RE): I like discovering things. I like solving puzzles. I like doing things that I don't think are possible, or challenging. And learning. JW: Robert Ewing is a scientist at PNNL. And he’s made a discovery that could potentially save lives. RE: I'm Robert Ewing. I'm a research chemist at the Pacific Northwest National Lab. I've been here for about 13 years. I've studied various analytical techniques for detecting trace of stances explosives and drugs, or some of those compounds. Ionization chemistry as a part of that. The instrumentation that goes along with that. Those are some of the things that I do for fun. JW: So, what did Robert discover? He and his team at PNNL developed a technology that’s ultrasensitive. It detects explosive vapors, deadly chemicals, and drugs like methamphetamine and fentanyl with unparalleled accuracy. And it works in seconds. RE: The technology really stems from using the detector of a mass spectrometer. And that's a way to look at different molecules, to understand what mass is there. And from that you can sort of determine the analyte. Here you're looking at what we did, or one of the challenges, was is the ionization. So, for the mass spec to see a molecule you've got to put a charge on there so it can manipulate that charge, create an electric field, and separate it. And so the ionization process is a way of getting that charge, that electrical charge, onto an individual molecule. And that's really where I've spent a lot of my time—understanding the chemistry around how that ionization process works and how to improve upon it. With the commercial mass specs that are out there that are pretty sensitive (parts per billion range and stuff) work pretty well. What we did is, we discovered that if you increase the amount of time that the ionization process can occur you can increase the sensitivity. And so the mass spec has a pinhole bringing the ions in from outside. What we do is, we took the ionization source and moved that away from the mass spec, and instead of having a few milliseconds of reaction time we give it two or three seconds and that gave us several orders of magnitude increase in sensitivity. JW: This technology could be a game-changer for transportation hubs, mail facilities, and other safety and security screening applications, like the ones you see in airports. Thanks to Robert’s tireless efforts, the system can detect a whole slew of things. Including explosive vapors, like TNT, toxic chemicals similar to nerve agents, and even illicit drugs, like fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine. The most surprising part? Robert thought this was a problem that was un-solvable. But he kept mulling on the idea, and that got him to think about none other than man’s best friend. RE: Probably one of the driving force—the ah-hah moments—I always thought that explosive vapor was a challenge that we probably wouldn't overcome. And yet, dogs go out and sniff explosives all the time. Well, I've always wondered what dogs really smell? You know, are they smelling the explosive? Are they smelling the other things that surround that are that are higher vapor pressure, more volatile? And I remember I went to a conference on explosives detection and they had a guy who had a detector dog and showed the detection of RDX. But he talked about his process of how he purified it, cleaned it, then trained his dog and showed it. And I watched it, you know, I watched the video. That dog has really seen. And I was like, “why can't we do that?” And so it was really about a month later when I was in the lab and said, “well, okay I got all the right tools.” I put it all together and on a Friday afternoon, I made it work. I mean so at some point it just happened. JW: So how did Robert train this technology to sniff out specific vapors? The answer: Selective ionization chemistry. RE: We talked about selective ionization chemistry. When you're detecting vapor at low parts per trillion parts per quadrillion levels there's a lot other things in the room. So we try to find selective ionization, so it's kind of like finding a needle in a haystack. You know how you do that? You use a magnet, right? The magnet is selective to the needle. It finds the metal and it ignores the straw. This is the same kind of thing. And that's where we spend a lot of our time is in that chemistry. Pick the right reactant ions, the ions that you want to has will analyze your analyte, and with that will analyze the materials we are looking for, and be kind of be invisible to the other species. So some examples there, you asked what chemicals we look at. You know explosives was one example. You want to see explosives, but maybe you don't want to see the various hydrocarbons and diesel fuel or gasoline or perfumes or colognes—things like that. And so that's the selectivity part. JW: But for the longest time, detection of certain explosive vapors, like TNT, wasn’t possible. The instrumentation just wasn’t sensitive enough. Typical instrumentation can see chemical levels in the parts per million and billion range. But many of the explosives out there in the world have very low vapor pressures—they’re more like in the low parts per trillion or below. RE: So, an air you've got molecules and stuff floating around. They're always bumping into each other. I mean there's like 10 to the 11th collisions per second for a molecule, and air that's occurring. And so to bring those two together, you've got lots of lots of collisions that are probably going to occur. And so more time just gives you a higher probability that interactions going to happen. JW: So now that we can detect things like explosives, what’s the future look like? RE: So, one of the aspects of this this equipment. By being able to see vapor detection, that allows you to have non-contact detection. So, when you go through an airport nowadays, they usually swipe your bag and run it through an instrument looking for explosive residue. This ability to see vapor kind of helps remove that contact, so it's a little less invasive. So, you can do maybe baggage screening or cargo screening, or you know even people when you walk through the imagers there to have a look for vapor at the same time. And so really, it's taking the next step of non-contact. Hopefully increasing screening speed, getting people through the airports quicker, and also maybe a little more thorough in your searches. It's sort of that vision what we hope to do is be able to take this instrument and work with a smaller mass spec so then you can you get it in a footprint that's similar to stuff that's in the airport. Or you can integrate it to x-ray machines, or so forth. So, that's kind of what our hope is—to you know, take this to the next level. Get it into a smaller more portable size, and be able to test it and evaluate it, and see what other challenges need to be fixed. JW: We asked Robert how it feels to know that he’s responsible for a technology that could potentially save lives. And he said, “it’s pretty cool.” RE: It's challenging too because what we do doesn't happen overnight. I mean there every now then you have really good days and there's sometimes months where you struggle to get make things. So, it's a mix of, it takes a lot of determination to find those good breakthroughs. JW: So, while it may not be in your local airport yet, PNNL’s vapor detection technology has a bright future. And that’s exciting. [Music] JW: Thanks for listening to Pods of Science. Want to learn more? Follow us on social media at PNNLab. We're on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
