This week- we like French films, a pair of pretentious boring French films, we like French films, three tickets s'il vous plaît. Monsieur Hulot, the legendary signature character of Jacques Tati, is a man overwhelmed and confused by the new modernity of Paris, as he and others stumble through six segments both lampooning and celebrating modernist life, and repeatedly encounters, Barbara, a young American tourist who longs to see the old romantic soul of Paris under its gleaming glass and steel skin. Tati's staggeringly massive auteuristic undertaking that both bankrupted him and firmly established his place among the greatest directors in the history of the medium, Playtime. Controversial American writer, director, photographer, and lover of nubile young flesh, Larry Clark, turns his specific view of youth culture on Parisians. Math is a bored skater with a horrific homelife who takes up prostituting himself to earn shocking amounts of overpayment for services rendered from kinky older men. JP, Math's best friend and fellow escort, soon begins to realize his love for Math is far from platonic. Marie is the girl who hangs around them in a couple scenes so we can firmly establish the boys sexual preferences. Marie also flirts with a third young sex worker, who only works with older women so he can provide for his family. Soon all the kids find themselves in a whirlpool of sex, drugs, skate videos, and a few more serious felonies. None of them will ever be able to wash off The Smell of Us. All that and Kevin gets fitted for a new trench coat, Dave does as little as possible, and Tyler scents all over his happy place. Episode 335- French Pressed

Sändes först 12/4 2013.Seklets fotograf. Det är nästan ett osannolikt smeknamn, men sedan Henri Cartier-Bresson avled 2004 har ikonstatusen snarast ökat. Det är nästan så att man kan bli misstänksam. Bara här i radion har det gjorts åtskilliga program om denna fotograf efter hans död.Ordet Reporter betyder bära tillbaka. Cartier-Bresson visade USA för fransmännen, Sovjetunionen för amerikanska tidningsläsare, Indien och revolutionen i Kina för världen. Rimligen borde Cartier-Bressons bilder nu vara nästintill bortglömda, men tvärtom ordnas hela tiden nya utställningar, nya böcker ges ut och gamla dåliga kopior säljs dyrt. Vem har förresten en nyhetsbild över soffan? Nej, det som lockar måste vara något annat än gamla fakta. Dags att problematisera århundradets fotograf.Det avgörande ögonblicket, är ett uttryck som tillskrivs Cartier-Bresson om. Fast det var faktiskt inte hans eget uttryck utan en förläggares. Själv talar han om bilder som uppväcker något. Vilket inte hindrat generationer av fotografer att försöka leva upp till Cartier-Bressons perfekta fras och perfekta bilder. Men här talar han om den visuella njutningen, om Tjechov, om bilden är sann eller inte är oviktigt. Han talar som en konstnär, inte som en reporter.Myten om Cartier-Bresson och de andra på bildbyrån Magnum som han var med om att starta 1947 berättar om ett gäng fotograferande Tintin-kusiner på ständiga äventyr. Sedan dess har härskaror med fotografer sökt sig till slagfält, fattigdom, lidande, revolutioner. För dem alla är förebilden HCB. Ingen reste så mycket, stannade borta så länge – ibland i åratal – kom hem så obekymrad. Och med så bra bilder.Antingen har man det eller så har man det inte. Sade Cartier-Bresson om förmågan att ta en bra bild. Fast så enkelt är det ju inte. Här talade han om visuell njutning – inte precis vad fotoreportrar brukar hänvisa till. Senare i livet sade han att teckning som han också ägnade sig åt var eftertanke, medan fotografi var ögonblicklig. Han beskar bilderna i kameran, när de togs, inte i mörkrummet. Bilden skulle vara perfekt från början. Sensualism kombinerades med stränghet.Erkännandet av en ordning, en struktur som finns där framför Dig, talade Cartier-Bresson om. Alltså en nästan akademisk hållning som han tillämpade sekundsnabbt. Det finns ett snapshot av Cartier-Bresson när han står på podiet och ska ta en bild av Martin Luther King som ska hålla sitt berömda tal ”I have a dream”. Cartier-Bresson ser skeptiskt ut. Ler inte, granskar Dr King som om han vore ett föremål.När han granskade yngre kollegers bilder på Magnum snurrade han kontaktkopiorna i handen och såg bilden ur vinklar fotografen aldrig varit medveten om. Och han talade om bildens formspråk, inte om dess innehåll. Han började som målare, slutade som tecknare. Däremellan var han fotograf. Livet är nu och för alltid. Var kom den känslan ur?Henri Cartier-Bresson, föddes 1908, in i en välbärgad släkt. Fadern som var symaskinsfabrikant ville förstås att sonen skulle ta över företaget, men Henri revolterade – ganska lustfyllt tycks det - genom att läsa modern poesi och ägna sig åt teckning. Han praktiserade aldrig hos någon porträttfotograf som så många av hans kollegor gjorde utan gick i flera år på André Lhotes berömda kubistiska målarkurser. Och samtidigt studerade han för en mycket mer konventionell målare, Jacques Emile Blanche känd för sitt fantastiska ungdomsporträtt av Proust. Vilken fotojournalist har idag en liknande utbildning?Några av HCB:s mest älskade bilder har en lite knasig humor. Två gubbar som tittar genom ett hål i ett skynke på ett bygge. En man på en spårvagn i Zürich som har ett gravkors med sig. Jo, visst. Det är ju klassisk surrealism, men så vardaglig att den inte förknippats med surrealismen utan setts som fotoreportage. Det overkliga draget finns också i de berömda bilderna från Mexiko med en prostituerad som tittar ur genom en dörr. Det är både social verklighet och en symbolbild.När nu fotohistorikerna gått igenom HCB:s samlade verk så är en av nyupptäckterna hur nära surrealismen han stod. Ja, HCB var som tonåring, alltså redan innan målarkurserna, med på surrealisternas berömda möten. André Breton brukade säga att Cartier-Bresson samarbetade med chansen.Cartier-Bresson berättar hur Robert Capa, den berömde krigsfotografen, rådde honom att ligga lågt med sin anknytning till surrealismen. Han skulle ta sina bilder som han ville men kalla det fotojournalism.1931 lämnar han surrealisternas Paris och reser till Elfenbenskusten, en ung man på jakt efter äventyr. Där händer någonting. Han blir på allvar fotograf och kommer tillbaka till Europa med malaria men också med en yrkesinriktning.Redan 1933, när han är 29 år kommer de första utställningarna. Det naturliga vore att nu satsa på en karriär som konstnärlig fotograf som t ex Man Ray. Men trots att utställningarna blir fler så ger sig HCB, som han kallades, ut på resor. I New York träffar han den berömde fotografen Paul Strand som lär honom filma. Och tillbaka i Frankrike blir han regiassistent till dåtidens viktigaste franske regissör Jean Renoir. Och gör några småroller i filmerna, leker verklighet.Allt går så lätt, så lätt.Han beundrade Renoir men ville inte berätta om honom. Hos bägge finns en blandning av sinnlighet och klarsyn, nästan cynism. Med åren blev han alltmer fascinerad av porträttuppdrag: en del bilder är verkligen geniala trots att de inte bygger på djup kontakt. Skulptören Giacometti som springer i regnet med en tidning över huvudet. Ezra Pound, vilande i sitt privata nirvana. Henry Miller på stranden i Kalifornien en mörk kväll. Och så bilden av Sartre som liksom stiger ur dimman med sträng klarhet. Den bilden tog han fort, men han stod en och en halv timme framför Ezra Pound utan att tala med honom.I alla porträtten finns Cartier-Bressons kärna: enkelhet, koncentration. När han på 50-talet åkte med Jean Paul Sartre till Moskva och denne högstämt hyllade friheten i Sovjetunionen fotograferade Cartier-Bresson en mans sätt att titta på en kvinna på gatan, några fabriksarbetskor som dansar i overaller, en pojke som håller sin far i handen framför en jättestaty av Lenin med lång skugga.Den indiske filmregissören Satyajit Ray sade att Cartier-Bressons främsta egenskap var att han såg det som förenade människor. Där har vi konsten igen. För nyhetsfotografiet visar det särskiljande, konsten visar det vi kan identifiera oss med. Vad skulle han ha sagt om internets syndaflod av bilder.När majrevolten utbröt i Paris gick så klart Cartier-Bresson ut med sin kamera. En filmfotograf riktade sitt objektiv mot Cartier Bresson som ju var mer känd än dem han fotograferade. Cartier-Bresson som då är drygt 60 ser ut som Tatis filmfigur Monsieur Hulot i ljus rock, smal och gänglig. Och Cartier-Bresson dansar fram med sin lilla kamera, alltid med ett enda objektiv: 50mm. Fram och tillbaka, ut på gatan, bakom folk, tittar över en axel, snor runt tar ett par lätta steg åt ett annat håll. En vadarfågel i rörelse, på väg att stjäla en bild ur ögonblicket. André Breton brukade säga att Cartier-Bresson samarbetade med chansen.Bilden 1937 av några picknickfirare vid en flodstrand. Man nästan hör pastisen slås upp i glasen, vågornas skvalp, fågelsången, klirret av bestick. Det är en bild som sammanfattar hela det franska 30-talet. Cartier-Bresson arrangerade den inte, men han var intresserad av dåtidens politik då alltså semestern var den stora reformen.Allt i bilden sammanfaller, den är så perfekt ut i minsta detalj att den inte går att glömma. Det är en liten essä om ett decennium i enda bild av ett vardagligt ögonblick, kondenserad tid. På sätt och vis kommer han aldrig fram till reportaget. Konsten tar över. Han fotograferar själva vardagen för alla sorters människor precis som impressionisterna målade vardagen i fest och arbete. Andlöst ömt fotograferar han en kvinnas ben på en soffa, ett likbål i Indien.En gång sades det att fotot befriade målarna från att vara detaljerade. När kameran registrerade allt kunde målarna strunta i detaljerna, lämna avbildningen och istället gestalta det de såg. Men sedda i efterhand står det klart att Henri Cartier-Bresson gestaltade snarare än återgav. Destinato alla televisione e poi distribuito nelle sale, "Monsieur Hulot nel caos del traffico" è l'ultimo lungometraggio cinematografico di Tati e l'ultimo appuntamento organizzato tra gli spettatori e il sempre candido Hulot, stavolta integrato nella società che lui stesso faticava a comprendere ma sempre simpatico.

Tati dirige il suo secondo lungometraggio e introduce al cinema il suo personaggio più noto ovvero quel candido e maldestro Signor Hulot che diventerà poi il suo alter ego nei film successivi. "Le vacanze di Monsieur Hulot" è una sorta di punto di svolta nella carriera cinematografica di Tati. Possiamo scorgere ancora l'ironia bizzarra di "Giorno di Festa" ma emerge già quel "bisogno" da parte di Tati di criticare certi vizi e tic della società (allora come ora) contemporanea. Il risultato è "Le vacanze di Monsieur Hulot", simpatica scampagnata con Hulot alle prese con una "rilassante" trasferta, lontano dal caos dell'autostrada e dal grigiore della metropoli.

To do this movie we should've just done a mostly silent, non-sequitur strewn podcast but instead we just couldn't talk enough about how much we loved this film. Tati incoming.
"Playtime", le 4e film de Jacques Tati, est un film monument, poétique et drôle, interrogeant notre rapport à la modernité, à lʹuniformisation. Il sort en 1967, monté et remonté, élagué, décrié, ressorti en juillet 2004 en version restaurée et enfin acclamé. Ce sera sa renaissance après 30 ans de quasi oubli. Frappé de désamour en 1967, ce film a brisé la carrière de Jacques Tati. Trop lourd, trop cher, trop tout, le film est dʹune ambition extrême car le réalisateur crée une ville entière à Joinville et tourne en 70 mm, un format habituellement réservé aux westerns. Le tournage est long. Trop long, les décors sont abimés. Tati y met toute sa fortune, sʹaccroche, sʹépuise et épuise son équipe. Le film est un échec commercial. La critique lʹégratigne. Peut-être que lʹon reproche à Jacques Tati de nʹavoir pas refait simplement une suite aux "Vacances de Monsieur Hulot". Pourtant, "Playtime" propose de rire et de sourire dans un univers de béton où lʹhumain semble se perdre dans un monde quʹil a lui-même construit. La poésie surgit au coin dʹun labyrinthe kafkaïen de buildings, là où son personnage de Monsieur Hulot peut semer le chaos. "Playtime" est un chef-dʹœuvre, de minutie, de malice, de drôlerie. Tout y pensé, réfléchi, avec ce quʹil faut de touche dʹabsurdité et de pas de côté. Lʹhumour explose en paillette dans des décors soignés et criants de modernité. Ne tardons plus, un groupe de touristes américains vient dʹarriver à Orly pour visiter Paris. Cʹest comme ça que débute le film de Tati et cʹest comme ça que nous débutons cette émission. Pour ce 1er épisode, un classique de 1953, "Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot", deuxième long métrage réalisé par Jacques Tati, qui marquait aussi et surtout la première apparition de son double cinématographique.
Historiquement Vôtre réunit 3 personnages dont le nom est à jamais associé à la pipe : le peintre surréaliste René Magritte qui a une pipe. Même s'il a lui-même écrit sur son tableau “Ceci n'est pas une pipe”. Oui, c'est vrai, c'est un tableau! En se plongeant dans ces images, on découvre l'évolution des conditions de travail issues de décennies d'automatisation. Des métiers disparaissent et l'iconographie nous présente ces bouleversements. En pénétrant dans les entreprises, les photographes ont réalisé des images à destination de la prévention, qui ont gagné au fil du temps en valeur historique et documentaire.Les photographies industrielles d'Émeric FEHER (1904-1966), conservées au Pôle images du Centre des monuments nationaux, révèlent une certaine approche commerciale des années 50 et 60. À travers des reportages très complets, suivis sur plusieurs années, le photographe était très attentif à la construction de son récit, qui se doit de documenter l'ensemble des process de production des entreprises commanditaires.On note chez FEHER une réelle attention à la mise en scène des corps en situation de travail. Les attitudes parfois stéréotypées répondent aux attentes d'une société en pleine reconstruction, où l'apologie de la modernité passe par ce type d'iconographie.De l'autre côté de l'Atlantique, un partenariat avec le Musée McCORD, musée d'histoire sociale de Montréal, permet de présenter les archives photographiques réalisées par plusieurs studios de photographes professionnels au début du XXe siècle. L'exposition « Montréal au travail » offre un panorama des différents métiers implantés dans le quartier Ville-Marie de la métropole québécoise.Le fonds de la société Créations artistiques Heurtier, conservé au Musée de Bretagne, est significatif d'une production d'images industrielles à destination commerciale. Réalisées par des opérateurs salariés, les photographies faites à la chambre moyen format sont d'une très grande qualité et magnifient l'objectivation des sujets photographiés.Les images semblent habitées de chuchotements et de bruitages étranges, et la présence des salariés mis en scène dans ces architectures des années 70, évoque les univers aseptisés et anonymes que traverse Monsieur Hulot dans le film « Playtime » de Jacques Tati.L'exposition collective « Au bureau », rassemble les photographies contemporaines de Julien BENARD, Laurent GÉLISE, Yannick LABROUSSE, et les images d'Émeric FEHER et du Fonds Bernard HEURTIER. Maybe because it’s the debut of M. Hulot, LES VACANCES DE MONSIEUR HULOT (MR. HULOT’S HOLIDAY) isn’t quite as consistent, coherent, or radical in its messaging as MON ONCLE (1958). What it IS, however, is a string of great bits and vibes from the French coast. Monsieur Hulot is a car designer who takes a chaotic journey to an auto-show in Amsterdam to show off his prototype in this comic film from 1971. It's the last of Jacques Tati's films to feature Hulot, whose name is said to be inspired in part by the French name for Charlie Chaplin's character in The Tramp - Charlot, and whom Rowan Atkinson has cited as an influence on his comic creation Mr Bean. Who is ‘The Illusionist’ (2010)? Is he a magician, bringing small miracles to life for the entertainment of a willing audience? Is he an old man, watching the world pass him by? Is he the guilt of an artist who put their craft before all else? In this case, anyway, he is not Edward Norton, Christian Bale, or Hugh Jackman. He is Jacques Tati, Monsieur Hulot himself, a character playing a character across a watercolor Europe. Created from Tati’s previously unproduced script, ‘The Illusionist’ is a beautiful and melancholy tale about time, growing up, and the relevance of rabbits. The story behind the story is a sad one, a tale of regret and pain. From that place came the inspiration for an exquisitely rendered journey from Paris to Scotland. Edinburgh has never looked more lovely and wistful. We continued our Tati twofer to see if his unmistakably visual humor translated into another medium as well as we expected. After taking a seasonal reprieve ourselves, we return with a lighthearted examination of Jacques Tati's famous comic outing which catapulted the indelible image of his beloved Monsieur Hulot character into the public sphere. Tati goes bananas in Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, a beach-themed comedy delight which sees Tati and his famously fumbling character get up to many antics while trying to relax on the beautiful French seaside. Hulot is a fully realized and expressive character in this first venture: curious and clumsy, chaotic but not destructive, and overall warm and endearing. His personality is a constant delight, mixing together the performative creativity of Tati's ingenious physicality and the cinematic tool of conscious sound design to build upon what similar vaudevillian artists had so exquisitely defined in the heights of the silent era. Monsieur Hulot's Holiday is a dreamy getaway in its own right; a pastoral portrait of a captivating locale with the relaxing and humorous qualities of Tati's captivating titular character carrying us through each memorable scene and story along the way. Mike is joined by architecture enthusiast Caitlin Dippo to discuss the buildings that make up the 1967 film PLAYTIME and the characters that occupy them! Hear them discuss their favorite moments of physical comedy from Jacques Tati's Monsieur Hulot character as well as other absurd and surreal works of art this film reminds them of.
Jacques Tati's masterpiece, 1967's Playtime, is an extraordinarily ambitious work of visual comedy and social satire. Mike's been keen to see this for fifteen years or more, knowing of its reputation for detailed visual design and the 70mm cinematography that shows it off, waiting for the right moment. José, when Mike suggests we watch it, thinks he's seen it many years ago, but soon realises he was probably thinking of Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, Tati's rather more charming comedy of fourteen years prior, so it takes him a while to get into Playtime's rather more offbeat gear. And he is ultimately a little cold to the film, though not immune to its appeal and pleasures, while Mike loves it unconditionally. In a somewhat alternate, near-future Paris, the plot, such as it is, follows two characters: Monsieur Hulot, the character Tati played in several films, as he stumbles through a France he finds unfamiliar and devoid of humanity; and Barbara, an American tourist visiting the city. In approximately six fairly distinct vignettes, Tati explores a vision of a consumerist, modern, and alienating Paris, the Eiffel Tower, symbolising the warm, cosy Paris of old, a long way away, merely a distant feature on the horizon or a reflection in a window. It's an attitude for which José has little sympathy, though Mike suggests that the development of the final scene, a kind of funfair around a traffic jam, can be seen as a synergy of the traditional and modern, and finds it moving. There's a huge amount to discuss, including the design and execution of the jokes; the impossible scale of the set, nicknamed 'Tativille' and whose astronomical cost would ruin Tati, who was forced to file for bankruptcy; to what other films, if any, it can be compared; the visual design, cinematography, choreography, and colour; the use of nationality, particularly American; and how the film might play differently today compared to upon its initial release - Mike arguing that it may have anticipated changes to the real world that would later materialise, such as the cubicle office, whose familiarity to us diminishes the otherworldliness we might otherwise feel. Playtime is a significant work of satire and well worth seeing, particularly given its beautiful restoration in 2014. Don't miss it for fifteen years. Don't be Mike. Recorded on 9th October 2020.
