Those who know Fareed Zakaria through his weekly column or CNN show may he surprised to learn he considers books the important way he can put new ideas in the world. But Fareed's original aspiration was to be an academic, and it was a chance lunch with Walter Isaacson that convinced him to apply for a job as editor of Foreign Affairs instead of accepting an assistant professorship at Harvard. His latest book, Age of Revolutions: Progress and Backlash from 1600 to the Present is a testament to his enduring passion for ideas and his belief in the importance of classical liberalism in an age of increasing populism and authoritarianism. Tyler sat down with Fareed to discuss what he learned from Khushwant Singh as a boy, what made his father lean towards socialism, why the Bengali intelligentsia is so left-wing, what's stuck with him from his time at an Anglican school, what's so special about visiting Amritsar, why he misses a more syncretic India, how his time at the Yale Political Union dissuaded him from politics, what he learned from Walter Isaacson and Sam Huntington, what put him off academia, how well some of his earlier writing as held up, why he's become focused on classical liberal values, whether he had reservations about becoming a TV journalist, how he's maintained a rich personal life, and more. In this episode, I had an inspiring conversation with Gurdeep Pall. Gurdeep Pall is a Corporate VP and Head of Product Incubations at Microsoft today, and is known in the industry as the inventor of VPN (Virtual Private Networks) and launching Skype for Business/Teams. In this episode we dive deep into the power that AI unlocks for enterprises and just how companies can utilize it to its full potential. We also discuss the power of search engines and language, how to reinvent and transform a mammoth organization like Microsoft, and his inspiring 30+ years career at Microsoft.   Gurdeep's Bio: Pall has been with Microsoft since 1990 – a long and fruitful thirty-one years in which he rose from a software design engineer to the Corporate VP for the Information Platform and Experience team. He was the inventor of VPN (Virtual Private Networks), led the Skype Acquisition and integration at Microsoft and worked on several noteworthy projects, including Windows NT 3.1, Windows XP, Skype for Business (now Teams), and many others. Pall was born in Chandigarh, India. In later adolescence, he considered following in his Brigadier father's footsteps by joining the Indian army. “There was something inside me that kept telling me that this was not what I was meant for,” he told Khushwant Singh at The Global Sikh Trail in an exclusive interview. Instead, he pursued computer engineering at Birla Institute of Technology where he graduated with his undergraduate degree. What is the balance between privacy rights and freedom of expression? As we mark the progress of privacy rights, we examine an important case which vacated an injunction against the publication of a book, holding the freedom of expression to be greater than that of privacy and observing that questions of defamation can be settled by trial. We also look at why the UIDAI did not consider serious questions of a data leak or how citizens' biometric data is shared. Finally, we look at the darkest dimension of the Delhi sealing case: the profit made by YK Sabharwal's sons. Khushwant Singh was an author, lawyer, diplomat, journalist and politician…but most importantly he was irreverent in all these avatars. His ready wit, magnanimity and his ability to have an “equal malice towards one and all”, were his unique qualities. I was lucky to meet and film him many years ago for Penguin Books India, for the launch of his book (which was also to be his last). I have many fond memories of chats with him at his home in Sujan Singh Park. When I met Khushwant Singh he was in his mid 90's but his mind was sharp as an arrow. He was generous with food, libations, shers, philosophy and most of all his humour. The last time I met him, he kissed my hand and guffawed, “Now you can go tell everyone that I am a dirty old man.” “It's our little secret.” I said and he laughed for a long time. Someday I will write about those visits. For now, listen to one of Khushwant Singh memorable stories- The Portrait of a Lady, translated into Hindi. Excerpts from Abraham Lincoln's letter to his son's teacher as mentioned in Khushwant Singh's book ‘The Freethinker's Prayer Book': ”Teach him, if you can, the wonder of books… also give him quite time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and the flowers on a green hillside. Teach him to be gentle with gentle people, and tough with the tough. Teach him, if you can, how to laugh when he is sad… Teach him there is no shame in tears. Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob and to stand and fight if he thinks he's right." This is a previously unpublished interview with Khushwant Singh that was recorded in 2009 by Dr. Kiran Bala, just after Singh turned 94. Producer: Vishnu Gopinath
