This week I met with Helen Meller, Professor Emerita of Urban History Nottingham University to discuss the life of Hilda Cashmore - the pioneering founder of Bristol's Barton Hill Settlement – which she established in 1911. Helen describes Hilda Cashmore as a ‘quaker, feminist, educator and social worker'. We discussed her life in the city and some of her extraordinary achievements.

Discovering Grayslake: Unveiling the Stories and People That Make Our Town Unique
Kristin Cashmore is the owner of Bella Vie Studio in Grayslake. She is highly involved in our community and I can't wait for you to learn more about her. Hey there! So you want to know a little bit about me...... I stumbled into the photography world 30 years ago when I took a job at a local photography studio shortly after graduating college. I knew nothing about photography but I had a strong desire to learn and a amazing mentor who was willing to teach me. In my beginning years at the studio, I learned so much and after a lot of hard work, I was able to receive the designation of Certified Professional Photographer from PPA (Professional Photographers of America). A few years later I achieved the designation of Master Photographer by entering my work into print competitions and studying with the best. Eventually I left the studio to start my own business and in 2008, Bella Vie Studio was born! My studio is in downtown Grayslake and I love being connected with many other small business owners who have quickly become friends. I also live in Grayslake with my husband, our three kiddos and our crazy puppies! What I love most about being a photographer is that I get to capture life as it happens. My sessions are very relaxed - we talk and play and have fun! Whether I'm being silly with preschoolers, talking with a high school Senior about the excitement college or celebrating with a newly married couple on their wedding day, I get the privilege of capturing moments in time - moments that will be relived and shared with future generations. And for that I am so blessed and honored!
Kevin Knowles was a brute, a thug and a suspected double murderer. Kirkstall was a lovely county town inhabited mainly by young families looking to build a safe and caring community. That is until Knowles moved into town. Travis Cashmore was a quiet hippy type bloke, well regarded by the locals. Driven to breaking point by Knowles, Cashmore took the law into his own hands, killing Knowles, one of his mates, and then took his own life. Mental health is often overlooked until it's too late. When that happens, it's a long way back to recovery. Stacy Cashmore shares her story involving mental health problems and how trusting people and asking for help will lead you to a better state mentally. Finding out what works for you and accommodating for yourself should not make you feel bad. It's completely healthy to look after and take care of your mental health. My favourite quote: "Everybody has mental health. Some people have mental health problems, but EVERYBODY has mental health and if you don't look after your mental health then you're going to get mental health problems" Enjoy!

What's an Azure Static Web App, and why do you want one? Carl and Richard talk to Stacy Cashmore about Azure Static Web Apps, Microsoft's implementation of static web apps. Stacy talks about the bare essentials of making a web page - serving up some HTML. How much back-end processing do you really need? The static web app approach serves a page as a static file - and while that file may make calls to APIs, it doesn't require AppService itself. The result is fast, low-cost web apps!

I may have met my match in the talkative department, but I've got my work cut out for me when it comes to steering this conversation in any certain direction. British Triathlon's Sophie Coldwell, Olivia Mathias, Claire Cashmore and Dave Ellis reflect on the weekend that was the 2021 World Triathlon Championship Series and World Triathlon Para Series, Leeds. Sophie took her first WTCS podium with an impressive 3rd place finish, while Olivia crossed the line in 25th on her World Series debut, before watching her boyfriend Alex Yee win the men's race. Dave clinched gold in the PTV1 race, while his partner Claire took silver behind team mate Lauren Steadman in the PTS5 category as they look towards the Paralympics in Tokyo. You'll hear: 07:56 The start of Sophie and Olivia's interview. 09:12 Olivia Mathias talks about her first WTCS experience and how she dealt with the nerves. "I do normally get quite nervous, but I was extremely nervous for this one and before the line up, I was almost crying I was so nervous" 15:15 What did Lucy Charles-Barclay bring to the Leeds WTCS race and what impact did she have on the way the race panned out? "Kudos to Lucy, she brought something else to the race and you never have a long course athlete doing that. She is this freak, who has all of these elements. It was lovely having her around and I'm excited to see what she can do," says Sophie. 30:45 Olivia talks about watching her boyfriend Alex Yee win the men's race. "It's really weird. You see him on the big screen and you can hear people in the crowd talking about him, but I just think 'it's just Alex! He's just a normal person, who collects Pokemon cards! When you are so close, you realise they are just human like everyone else," says Olivia. 38:30 We talk about 'comparison is the thief of joy.' "So many people compare all the time, but you are always going to find someone who can do something better than you or faster than you, but it strips out the joy of what you were so happy with and chuffed about," Sophie says. 42:49 The start of Claire Cashmore and her partner Dave Ellis' interview 47:15 Claire talks about the sprint finish she had with Grace Norman, to take second. 49:35 Dave talks about the mental ups and downs of the last decade, whereby he swam at the Beijing Paralympics, just missed out on qualifying for London 2012, switched to para triathlon but then his category didn't feature at Rio 2016 57:00 How they are preparing for the Paralympics, which will be completely different to previous experiences, due to Covid. 01:10:00 Claire talks about her book, 'Splash' which is aimed at normalising disability for children, increasing representation and encouraging children to believe in themselves. "We all struggle with that lack of self belief, but actually we are more brilliant than we think." This week we chat with the legend that is 4 time Paralympian; Claire Cashmore. Claire started at Athens 2004 and hasn't looked back since, winning medals in Athens, Beijing, London and Rio (where she won gold!!). After Rio it was time for swimming to take a back seat and triathlon take centre stage as Claire pivoted in to the wonderful world of triathlon for a crack at Tokyo 2020 (subsequently 2021). We talked through Claire's journey in to this new sport for her, what drivces her, how lockdown has been, her training schedule and so much more. She really is a lovely human! We hope you enjoy this informal chat as much as we did. To find Claire on social media her Instagram is @clairecashmore1 and her website is https://clairecashmore.com/ To pre-order a copy of her exciting children's book "Splash" then click this link https://harpercollins.co.uk/products/splash-claire-cashmore?variant=32836557144142
Here's a Paralympian who's written a book in lockdown. Claire Cashmore has written a children's book. It's called Splash and you can pre-order here. https://www.whsmith.co.uk/products/splash/claire-cashmore/sharon-davey/paperback/9780755502851.html?utm_campaign=eq_whs&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=awin&awc=3017_1616013355_7d59b84afa44ea609e3d9ee885c79f28 Claire was motivated by a lack of representation of people with a disability in children's books and the media. Urged on by her sister, she wrote a book which tells the story of her young fear of water and swimming - a fear that was conquered and saw Claire on to win a sackful of international medals, including Paralympic gold. Claire switched sports to para-triathlon after Rio and she's hoping to be in Tokyo this summer. I'm raising money for the Maggie's Cancer Centre charity by making these podcasts. This special episode was recorded before the Covid-19 Lockdown 2.0, and therefore does not contain the usual nonsense chat about current events. Instead, the boys invited Luke Cashmore back to the show to tell some of his grim life stories, such as gozzing in kebabs, and bathing in his own excrement.
In this episode, multi Paralympic medalist Claire Cashmore calls on film makers and actors to think, and do more, to help fight the prejudice against those with a disability. It follows the latest 'Witches' movie depicting a witch with three fingers, a change from the original Roald Dahl text.
