Happy April Fool's Day! We had a great time covering Manos: The Hands of Fate back in 2022 and we were bummed that we missed it last year but are delighted to be back this April Fool's with another Un-Substantive Cinema show. This year it's Hot Shots! Part Deux, one of the silliest movies of all time. Written and directed by Jim Abrahams (of Airplane!, Top Secret!, & The Naked Gun) and starring Charlie Sheen, Lloyd Bridges, and Valeria Golino, Hot Shots! Part Deux mirrors the plotlines of films like Missing in Action & Rambo II along with a major subplot from Casablanca. The film is tonally all over the place riffing on movies like The Wizard of Oz, Lady and the Tramp, The Godfather, Enter the Dragon, Star Wars, Apocalypse Now, Predator, and many more! It's pretty juvenile but it's nonstop gags and it's a lot of fun! Dale_A loves these movies just as much as Philip so he was the perfect guest! We had a great time and we hope you enjoy it too! Reacher tells the story of a muscular Stranger who wanders into town and gets accused of murder. Trust us, it's better than we are making it sound.   Enjoy Movies! (and TV, Games, Music, and more!) Sequels have been around almost as long as movies. But when did they start adding numbers to a title to indicate that it was a continuation of the plot? We found the first evidence of a Roman numeral in a title back in 1957 with a movie from England called Quatermass II. Roman numerals became really popular after 1974's The Godfather part II. We got a plethora of sequels with those parallel little numbering systems with Superman II, Star Trek two, Rambo II, and of course the iconic weekend at Bernie's II. They don't all have Roman numerals but a sequel really means that someone liked the first story and wanted it to continue. Why do we like sequels? Is it just a cash grab from the studios? Or is it because we just don't want the characters and story to end?   Sequels aren't unique to movies either. Television shows sometimes have sequels, but usually they're called spinoffs. The Jeffersons was a spinoff to All in the Family. Laverne and Shirley was a spinoff for Happy Days, as was Mork and Mindy. The title numbering may be different, but they are still sequels.   Video games jumped into the sequel world. Sometimes they would differentiate from the original by giving it a similar title like Donkey Kong Jr. or Ms. Pac-Man. Or sometimes they maintained their cinematic quality by giving them numbers like Streetfighter II or Mortal Kombat II.   Even the music industry got into the sequel numbering game. Some iconic albums were numbered with Roman numerals like Led Zeppelin II, McCartney II, Queen II, and Van Halen II. Plus tons of Greatest Hits compilations will throw numbers on their titles to let everyone know you need to collect the whole set. Now that's what I call music! Do you like sequels? Hver gang vi skal i gang med at producere en After Dark, tænker vi, "Hvorfor er det SÅ lang tid siden, vi sidste lavede en After Dark???". Når vi så er færdige med at producere den, tænker vi, "DERFOR!" Det er hårdt og voldsomt tidskrævende arbejde, men måske netop derfor, er det også de podcasts, der er mest givende for os at lave, og denne nr. 9 af slagsen har vist sig ikke at være en undtagelse. First Blood er en film, som du nok mener er ret enkel, og du tager ikke fejl. Så hvordan har Hjørnet præsteret, at fylde fire timer (og meget mere) ud med snak kun om denne Stallone-klassiker fra 1982?  Det har vi gjort ved ikke kun at snakke "ind" i filmen, men også "ud" af den. Vi går altså både i detaljer med filmens tilblivelse, indhold og analyse af samme, men vi perspektiverer også filmen i dens samtid og udforsker dens temaer gennem historiske og sociologiske briller. Kronjuvelen denne gang er af en ganske unik slags. First Blood ér en actionfilm, men den handler først og fremmest om en soldat med PTSD, der har svært ved at finde mening med sit liv og ender med at rase ud i frustration over samfundets mangel på forståelse.  For at bringe denne historie helt tæt på os og dig, har vi snakket med en dansk veteran, der absolut ikke har haft det let efter at have deltaget i flere krige i Kosovo og Afghanistan. Det er et tungt interview, der naturligvis hjælper med at forstå folk i hans situation, men derudover bringer det forhåbentlig også forståelse for, hvorfor First Blood er meget mere end bare en 80'er-actionfilm. Vi bringer også et interview af en helt anden slags. Filmnørdens Hjørnes superfan Christian Thomsen er nemlig den største Stallone-fan og -ekspert vi kender. Derfor har vi ringet til ham, for at høre om Stallones rolle som den muskuløse kriger, og hvad den betød for ham. Men der er meget mere. Vores personlige forhold til Rambo-figuren og filmen First Blood. Et detaljeret handlingsreferat. En snak om de største spillere foran og bag kameraet. At a young age, the Maryland-born, Philadelphia-raised native pursued his musical ambitions, forming a series of bands, and finally turned professional at the tender age of 15 (“I had to lie about my age,” admits Frank). His group, Valentine, included lead guitarist John Oates (Hall and Oates) and was signed to RCA Records in 1975, when they recorded their first album. Frank made his on-screen singing debut, performing the self-penned acapella song, Take You Back in the opening scene of the film Rocky. “The only reason I got the part was that I was the only musician my brother, Sylvester, knew…and I worked cheap.” Frank is a guitar, boxing, music, mafia and art aficionado and is an avid collector of guitars, guns and boxing memorabilia.
