"The Assessment" had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it received positive reviews for its sci-fi drama concept and performances from Elizabeth Olsen, Alicia Vikander & Himesh Patel. The film, set in a futuristic society destroyed by climate change, tells the story of a successful young couple who must face heavy scrutiny from a female assessor over the course of seven days to observe, evaluate, and determine if they are worthy of having a child. Olsen and Vikander were both kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. A young programmer (Domhnall Gleeson) is selected by his company's CEO, Nathan (Oscar Isaac) to participate in a ground-breaking experiment in synthetic intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of Ava (Alicia Vikander), a highly advanced A.I. Caleb and Ava increasingly bond during their conversational Turing tests. It's later learned that power outages at the facility are purposefully caused by Ava herself, so that she can confess her fears to Caleb without the watchful eye of Nathan. She warns Caleb that Nathan is to not be trusted and asks for his help against Nathan. "Ex Machina," the directorial debut of screenwriter Alex Garland ("28 Days Later, "Sunshine"), perfectly builds tension slowly and carefully without ever letting the pace slacken. The visual effects are so well done and convincing that, even though you can clearly see Ava's robot gears and wires, she subconsciously becomes more and more human. The actor performances of the three main cast members are absolutely outstanding. Even though she's just a robot, Vikander is able to bring out subtle humanistic facial expressions, so well that it makes one wonder if the film's audience was the true Turing test all along. Before even turning thirty, Alicia Vikander had already starred in the sci-fi thriller “Ex Machina,” teamed up with Matt Damon in “Jason Bourne,” was in pre-production as the lead in the reboot of the action franchise “Tomb Raider,” and had won an Academy Award for her performance in “The Danish Girl.” Whether it be the three projects she has coming out this year, her marriage to fellow actor (and former co-star) Michael Fassbender, or time spent enjoying life's simple pleasures, Vikander remains one of the busiest and most underrated gems in the industry. Continuing to showcase her range, the actor switches gears for her latest film, “The Green Knight.” Based on the poem and Arthurian legend, “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” this medieval fantasy follows Dev Patel as Sir Gawain, the nephew of King Arthur, as he goes on an epic quest in pursuit of the Green Knight. The film challenges many themes laced in lore, such as honor, nobility, questions of identity, and worthiness to become a legend. Vikander plays dual roles as Essel and The Lady and is treated to a showstopping monologue that makes for one of the film's greatest moments. Vikander had long been a fan of the film's director, David Lowery, and had met him prior to being offered a part. But when she was sent the script, she wasn't asked by Lowery to read for any specific part. It wasn't until the end of the casting process that she was asked to play two roles. At that time, he introduced her to the legend of Sir Gawain and the modifications he made to the original material, namely, Vikander's soliloquy about the color green. The film not only takes on the challenge of modernizing a 700-plus-year-old poem but manages to capture the essence of a great adventure movie through Lowery's direction. Vikander views it as a coming-of-age story. While it's not without its Arthurian hallmarks, there is a meditative and cerebral approach to the philosophy of morality (Lowery regulars are all too familiar) that aids in putting a unique spin on the genre. This question caused Vikander to reflect on her own life and status. One of Vikander's earlier breakout roles was in Guy Ritchie's sleek spy flick, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” While packing a star-studded cast, including Henry Cavill and Elizabeth Debicki, and vibrant, kinetic spy action, the film, unfortunately, struggled to find an initial audience tanking its franchise potential. Since then, the film has gained quite a cult following, with fans expressing interest in a sequel. Vikander looks back fondly on making the film and loved how it captured the look and feel of the 60s. While a follow-up remains up in the air, she's happy that people are finding it and enjoying it, even if it's years later. During my conversation with Vikander, we also get into the magic of 80s fantasy films and how “The Green Knight” recaptures that magic, her love of genre, “Ex Machina,” and much more! Don't miss “The Green Knight” when it hits theaters on July 30. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

So there's a lot to unpack from the Dodgers' World Series clinch last night. Sure, the Kevin Cash decision to pull Blake Snell seems...kinda nuts. But is it the reason they lost? And the Justin Turner thing...oh boy. How could MLB possibly allow for a scenario where players participate in WORLD SERIES GAMES without knowing with complete certainty that they had tested negative? It's also #WouldYouRatherWednesday-would you rather the Ravens lose both Steelers games but somehow win the division or win both games but somehow lose the division? Near the bottom of Hour 2, pitching coach Brian Vikander-one of the authors of the new book "Dalko" joined us to discuss their dive into the life and career of former Orioles farmhand Steve Dalkowski, whose story is one of the most significant legends in baseball history.

It's not just 2018's "Tomb Raider" that brings Lara Croft to the big screen. There is also 2001's "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" and its stilted 2003 sequel "The Cradle of Life". Whether it's Alicia Vikander or Angelina Jolie, Lady Croft is the most down-to-earth ass-kicking, globe-trotting, robot-fighting, communing-with-dead-spirits, sprinting-up-pyramids, espionage-expert, archaeologist-adventurer billionaire you're likely to find. Richard shares extensive knowledge of the video games on which these films are based, as well as his love for Iain Glen. Jonathan is enamoured by Alicia Vikander but manages to rediscover the wonderfully insane moments of the Jolie films. Sharks will be punched, stone statues brought to life, perhaps even robots will also learn to feel. See how the new Tomb Raider compares to the ones from the early 'noughties', a time when you could actually just have the Illuminati be the villains of your movie.

Adapted from the most recent video game from which the franchise gets its name (and fame), the film stars Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, Walton Goggins and Daniel Wu. Vikander reimagines the role originally brought to the silver screen by Angelina Jolie, prompting many skeptical fans to wonder whether this new interpretation will face the same creative challenges of the previous two films. The sex trafficking case against former Campbell County Judge Tim Nolan has kept growing. And it's getting stranger. A grand jury on Thursday indicted him on eight more charges, including rape of a female over age 12 from an incident dating back to the summer of 1965. That's when Nolan, 70, would've have been about 18 years old. The other new charges took place between 2004 and September 2016 and include two counts of human trafficking, one count of attempted human trafficking with a minor, one count of sodomy, and three counts of unlawful transaction with a minor. Nolan faces more than 100 years in prison on 28 felony charges, including four counts of human trafficking of a minor. The total number of victims is 22, including eight juveniles, according to the attorney general's office. A frail-looking Nolan shuffled into a Campbell County courtroom and entered a not guilty plea Thursday on the new charges. Cincinnati.com Michael Fassbender As Hollywood's leading men fall prey to the reckoning over sexual misconduct, certain A-listers have managed to sidestep scrutiny. But Twitter never forgets. While the media gushes over Michael Fassbender's secret Ibiza nuptials with Alicia Vikander and their new home in Lisbon, dark #MeToo-style allegations from the actor's past have been relegated to social media. In her March Vogue cover, Tomb Raider actress Vikander referenced her domestic bliss with Fassbender, telling the magazine, “I feel I'm more happy and content than I've ever been.” Yet the newlywed Fassbender was a no-show at the 2018 Golden Globes ceremony. While other alleged abusers walked the red carpet in all black, triggering social media backlash over their perceived hypocrisy, Fassbender appears to have simply opted out. Vikander, who was a presenter at the ceremony, arrived, posed for photos, and did E! interviews alone. In keeping with the Time's Up initiative, Vikander wore black. Fassbender may have avoided the Golden Globes and a flurry of think pieces, but allegations of domestic abuse have silently trailed him in recent years. The domestic abuse allegedly occurred in 2010, just two years before Fassbender made his X-Men debut as Magneto and gave an award-winning performance in the critically acclaimed Shame. A 2012 Hollywood Reporter article, “Fassbender on Fire,” chronicled the German-Irish actor's meteoric rise, noting that, while “the projects started pouring in from top-flight directors” around 2009, it wasn't until 2011 that Fassbender had his “real introduction to fame.” The 2012 profile continued, “One of the most gifted actors today, the star of Shame, A Dangerous Method and the upcoming Prometheus has the industry in awe.” the Daily Beast

Derek Cianfrance's The Light Between Oceans is something of an epic, operating on quite a small scale but still putting its characters through some formidable challenges. It's based on TL Stedman's novel of the same name, one that suggests both intimacy and profundity. This story does eventually deliver on both, but in the film at least, the intimacy is there pretty much from the get-go. It sets itself up to be a charming love story about a mild-mannered lighthouse keeper (Michael Fassbender) and his lovely wife (Alicia Vikander) who live on the Island of January between two oceans. It is December, 1918. Tom Sherbourne was a lucky survivor of the Great War, though with no loving family to come home to and no reason to believe that he has any right to be alive after so many have died. As he is first getting to know the sweet young Isabel Haysmark, he tells her he has done some unspeakable things in the years he spent on the front, though he doesn’t go into any detail. For him, the noble occupation of a lighthouse keeper is a way to give something good to the world, to help others when they most need it, but to do so from afar, without having to look into their eyes and receive undeserved gratitude. He never envisioned sharing this new life with a wife and child, but almost immediately after she meets him, Isabel is determined to court him, marry him and give him a family. She manages the first two of those easily enough, but after two miscarriages that final dream of hers is looking unlikely to come true. Cianfrance doesn't spend too long on their burgeoning romance. He mostly just shows them sharing their different experiences of the war. Isabel lost all three of her brothers, and is now an only child. She notices how, unlike a wife who might tragically become a widow after the war, there is no special name for what a parent becomes if they lose their children, or for what a sister becomes if she loses her brothers. To her, it is a connection that cannot be severed, the kind of love that never dies, even if the person it was for is now dead, or never even had a chance at life. Conversations like this one are peppered throughout the film, particularly in the initial stages of the plot. This is one of the more well-written deep and meaningful dialogues to be seen here. Others are markedly more on-the-nose, such as Tom explaining all of the mythological symbolism of the island, or one that has a certain crucial supporting character reciting one of the morals of the story: “You only have to forgive once. To resent, you have to do it all day, every day.” These are all very worthy, weighty sentiments, but some of them are gratingly overstated and seem to arrive just in time for some not-so-subtle foreshadowing. Unsurprisingly, the film is at its most effective when it communicates its ideas through sounds and images - especially one striking shot that makes the ocean feel just like a desert - and when it simply trusts the strength of its story. After a generous amount of romantic and tragic setup, the real story is carried over the waves towards the little island with those two tiny graves. The couple spot a dinghy drifting near the shoreline, with a dead man and a crying baby girl lying inside it. Isabel is desperate to keep her. For all they know, she has no one. If Tom puts this in the log book, she'll probably be sent to an orphanage. Isabel convinces him to pretend that she's theirs, to Christen her Lucy Sherbourne and literally raise her as their own, an apparently victimless crime that might just rescue all three of them. Years later, however, when Tom discovers there that there is indeed a victim still suffering from what they did to her, he fears that they have damned themselves to a lifetime of punishment. It turns out that the dead man in the boat, the girl’s biological father, was a German man named Frank Roennfeldt (Leon Ford), the one who later espouses the virtues of forgiveness in a romantic flashback. Unfortunately, his new overseas neighbours weren’t quite as willing to bury the hatchet so soon after the war. He got into that boat out of blind fear for his own life, and even more so the life of his tiny daughter, who he had named Grace. Meanwhile, his wife, Hannah (Rachel Weisz) was left behind to erect a tombstone for both of them on the mainland of Australia. Strangely enough, that is where the film is set, even though its three main actors are Irish, English and Swedish and use more or less English accents. Cianfrance has tried to create a believable sense of place by shooting some of the scenes in Tasmania and filling the supporting cast with well-known Australian actors like Jack Thompson and Bryan Brown, who all act in their native accents. It’s a pretty discordant mix, but it still amounts to some very evocative cinematography and many solid performances. Unsurprisingly, Fassbender imbues the world-weary war survivor with a genuine sense of humanity, Vikander brings an unexpected dark streak to the loving mother with no child to love, while Weisz is consistently engaging as the wounded wildcard who stirs things up to an exceptional level of moral complexity. There are an awful lot of films that start with an excitingly unique premise that then just tapers off into cliché, but, interestingly, The Light Between Oceans begins in a fairly predictable way and becomes more interesting and sure-footed as it goes along. "This was, like, two corpses in three hours. I mean, am I crazy? That's unusual, right?" Shane Black was gone from the scene for a decade before his return as not just writer but also director with 2005's “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” a comedy crime mystery that unjustly largely flew under everyone's radar. It was mostly critically acclaimed, but with Warner Bros.' modest release plans and minimal advertising, it didn't have much of a chance. And we're hoping to rectify that. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our Shane Black series with his directorial debut, “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” We talk about why we love this film so much, from the noir and pulp elements Black incorporates to his comedic sensibilities, from the casting to the nature of the buddies. We chat about Robert Downey, Jr. and Val Kilmer and why they work so well together here. We discuss the challenge Black had to get this film made, and subsequently how he made it. We look at some of the other actors, including Michelle Monaghan and Corbin Bernsen, and what they bring to the table. We touch on the cinematography by Michael Barrett, the editing by Jim Page and the brilliant score by John Ottman, wondering if we can track down the soundtrack somehow. We look at the script and some of the Blackisms in it, but also compare it with the final scene and how having Black on set to direct allowed for one of his actors to create a stronger moment for the character. And we wrap up our look at the IMFDb to see what a much smaller budget does to the amount of firepower shown off in the film.  It's a brilliant ride of a film that thrills us to no end. We highly recommend everyone checks it out, so do so then tune in to the show! A warning, there is some messiness ahead in this 2-hour+ podcast due, possibly, to wine intake. There may or may not be some sidebar shade towards Brooklyn, but you'll have to listen to be sure. I give this podcast to you unedited and raw. Why subvert the truth?  The first 20 minutes we take apart the Shorts so if that's not your thing you can skip it, but any good Oscar predictor knows these are the categories that can make or break your Oscar pool, or even better, your chances of getting into next year's Gold Rush Gang.  The majority of the podcast centers around the 10 separate battles that The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road will be on throughout Oscar night. Where will they split? Where do WE split?  Finally, we land on Best Picture which, for some, is still an open race. There are strong arguments to be made for the three main contenders (The Revenant, The Big Short and Spotlight) and we'll detail them right here.  Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy podcast.

Can anyone deny its frontrunner status now? We also look at the continued strength of Mad Max: Fury Road (which won four awards) and the craziness of the Best Supporting Actress category, including a bit of time devoted to the one and only Diane Ladd on her "greed and corruption" accusations of leading actress performances in "her" suppawting category.  We finish by talking about the three slates of performers and presenters for the 88th Academy Awards, wonder if the chosen presenters are too thinly veiled an answer to the #OscarsSoWhite controversy and try and figure out who will be presenting Best Picture.

But research and analysis is the cornerstone of the AwardsWatch member doing Oscar predictions and it's often what sets us apart from most punditry.  We conclude by addressing the ongoing controversy and conversation of the omission of people of color in the acting nominees as well as gender and sexuality still being issues for a majority of voters.

In podcast #32 I am joined by Gold Rush Gang members Chris Pepper and Jason Osiason to discuss the craziness of this week's Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe nominations.  At SAG, Joy and The Martian are snubbed while Trumbo, Beasts of No Nation and Straight Outta Compton show up. What gives? Could it be the power of Helen Mirren and Bryan Cranston and their massive SAG histories? Things often make more sense in retrospect.  The Globes followed suit for Trumbo but then also brought us momentum for Carol, Room and Mad Max: Fury Road. Plus, the return of The Martian and Joy. We also talk about just how bad Warner Brothers is doing this year, both with their awards campaigns and box office. We discuss all major categories and just how tough Supporting Actor is this year. The emergence of Michael Shannon in 99 Homes in an already packed race just adds another person to an already near-impossible top 5. Also discussed, the precarious position of Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander's category fraud campaigns.  We finish by digging heavy into Best Director, both the Golden Globe nominations and possible Directors Guild of America (DGA) candidates.

- Cincinnati.com Michael Fassbender As Hollywood's leading men fall prey to the reckoning over sexual misconduct, certain A-listers have managed to sidestep scrutiny. A 2012 Hollywood Reporter article, “Fassbender on Fire,” chronicled the German-Irish actor's meteoric rise, noting that, while “the projects started pouring in from top-flight directors” around 2009, it wasn't until 2011 that Fassbender had his “real introduction to fame.” The 2012 profile continued, “One of the most gifted actors today, the star of Shame, A Dangerous Method and the upcoming Prometheus has the industry in awe.” - the Daily Beast
