I speak with Jon about one of the most important yet subtle phenomena happening right now: the absolute warping of our culture and politics to fit the incentive structure of internet platforms. We speak about the mechanics and flow of information on the internet, rumors, fake news, mob violence, short video as the ultimate format, mimetic desire, the move from surfing the web to feed-based viewing, how Jon Stewart led to Tucker Carlson, and much more. Jon Askonas is an assistant professor of Politics at the Catholic University of America and a non-resident senior fellow at the Lincoln Network. Artificial intelligence is all the rage these days. The large language model ChatGPT reached over 100 million users in record time, and AI is growing more accessible and relevant for everyday consumers. While many are cheering the AI revolution and heralding a brighter future, others are sounding the alarm. Elon Musk has warned AI could spell “civilizational destruction” without proper safety protocols. Is AI moving too fast, or is this the pace of innovation our economy needs? What should policymakers do, if anything, to tackle the challenges posed by AI? Evan is joined by Sam Hammond, Senior Economist at Lincoln Network.“Polluting the agentic commons,” a piece by Sam on what happens when chat agents go viral“Before the Flood,” a piece by Sam on the future of AI
For many, their first thought about blockchain or cryptocurrency has to do with crime, scams, or the infamous meltdown of FTX. But the implications of blockchain technology go far beyond the breathless headlines. Consider data privacy. Governments around the world are increasingly trying to protect the privacy of Internet users, particularly when it comes to so-called “free” services like YouTube and Instagram which are supported by targeted advertising. While governments have struggled to get a grip on user privacy with these services, our guest today says that decentralized tech like cryptocurrency can radically alter how data privacy must be tackled. Luke Hogg is Director of Outreach at Lincoln Network, focusing on the intersection of emerging technologies and public policy. Read his paper on Web 3 and data privacy, co-authored with Antonio García Martínez.
How will so-called "generative AI" tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT change our politics, and change the way we interact with our representatives in democratic government? This episode features three segments, with:Kadia Goba, a politics reporter at Semafor and author of a recent report on the AI Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives;Micah Sifry, an expert observer of the relationship between tech and politics and the author of The Connector, a Substack newsletter on democracy, organizing, movements and tech, where he recently wrote about ChatGPT and politics;Zach Graves, executive director of Lincoln Network, and Marci Harris, CEO and co-founder of PopVox.com, co-authors with Daniel Schuman at DemandProgress of a recent essay in Tech Policy Press on the risks and benefits of emerging AI tools in the legislative branch.
Luke Hogg is Director of Outreach for Lincoln Network, an organization seeking to bridge the gap between innovators and policy makers for a freer and more abundant future. Is the Internet a force for freedom, or a tool for dictators to oppress their people? The answer largely depends on where you live in the world. For decades, U.S. policymakers have, for the most part, embraced the Internet as a tool to promote democracy. But China, Russia, Iran, and other nations have done the opposite: used the Internet to suppress, surveil, and manipulate people both within and beyond their borders. What is the U.S. doing to promote Internet freedom? Since 2012, the Open Technology Fund has supported projects designed to counter Internet censorship. But is the Fund up to the challenges we face today? And what backlash might the U.S. face by engaging in these activities? Joining Evan to discuss is Dan Lips, Head of Policy at Lincoln Network and former FBI analyst and Homeland Security staffer in Congress. See Dan's white paper on OTF here.ReferencesFreedom House report that shows global Internet freedom has declined for 12 consecutive years.
If you're the parent of a teenager, you might lament the hours they spend scrolling through videos on TikTok. But other than being a time suck, it may seem harmless, right? Not according to a growing chorus of policymakers who say, given TikTok's relationship with the Chinese government, the app needs to be banned, or seriously curtailed, to protect America. So how could cute dances, animal videos, and influencers be a threat to national security? Evan is joined by Geoffrey Cain, Senior Fellow for Critical Emerging Technologies at Lincoln Network and author of The Perfect Police State: An Undercover Odyssey into China's Terrifying Surveillance Dystopia of the Future. They discuss the changing relationship between China and the U.S., the evolving policy debate over TikTok and its parent company ByteDance, and the geopolitical implications of potential U.S. government action against the popular app.
What is dynamism? The dictionary will tell you, “the quality of being characterized by vigorous activity and progress.” But aside from being an SAT word, “dynamism” is an ethos that pervades the technology sector in the U.S., particularly in Silicon Valley. In recent years, has America lost its dynamist edge? Sure, we get a new iPhone every year, but where are the major, disruptive leaps we associate with tech-driven innovation? Evan is joined by Zach Graves, Executive Director at Lincoln Network. They discuss the state of tech and tech policy in the U.S., how the rise of China implicates traditional view of free markets and industrial policy. Can bridging the gap between engineers in tech hubs and policymakers in Washington and state capitols help make America more dynamist?
You might not be familiar with a company called DJI. It's a large, Chinese drone manufacturer. The Army and Interior Department have banned DJI products, because the company -- which is closely associated with the Chinese Communist Party -- is a security threat. Federal Drive host Tom Temin spoke with someone, policy and technology researcher at the Lincoln Network, Lars Schonander, who is concerned that other federal agencies continue to buy DJI drones.

According to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw, a 14-year-old boy has been charged with killing Tiffany Fletcher at Mills Creek Playground. Fletcher was a mother of three and worked for Philadelphia parks and recreation. Geoffrey Cain—Senior Fellow at Lincoln Network & Author of “The Perfect Police State: An Undercover Odyssey into China's Terrifying Surveillance Dystopia of the Future”—joins the show to discuss his recent Wall Street Journal opinion editorial, “China is Buying the Farm.” According to Cain, Chinese agricultural companies, with assistance from the Chinese government in some instances, are buying large amounts of U.S. farmland. Particularly alarming, is an incident in which a Chinese company purchased 300 acres of land near a U.S. Air Force base in North Dakota. Cain also discusses his interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Is the Biden Administration focusing too much on censoring conservative-minded Americans while ignoring China's push to control U.S. farmland and pork producers? According to Penn Live, a Pennsylvania man wearing a rainbow wig was arrested for carrying a gun into a local Dairy Queen. The man told police he was working to “restore Trump to President King of the United States.”

The second impeachment trial of Donald Trump is history, and the Biden administration is ready to move on. But the effects of Trump pervade almost every part of American life. Today, I'm joined by OG blogger Driftglass to get his perspective on American life in the post-Trump era (and whether or not it IS the post-Trump era). But first, I've been troubled by the idea of making the fence around the US Capitol in DC permanent. The idea of putting the seat of the US government behind a barrier is an anathema to everything this nation is supposedly based on. I worked on a painting depicting my concern this weekend (see the cover art for today's show), and just finished it last night. I awoke to an article about a coalition of left and right organizations sending a letter to leadership expressing concern and opposition to the proposed permanent fencing surrounding the US Capitol. I'll speak with Arthur Rizer of the Lincoln Network, one of the groups who spearheaded the protest.
By the reckoning of the Government Accountability Office, over the last two decades it has saved the government more than $1 trillion and recommended 25,000 improvements. Joining the Federal Drive with more, the director of cyber and national security at the Lincoln Network, Dan Lips.

Givers, Doers, & Thinkers—A Podcast on Philanthropy and Civil Society
INTERVIEW This week, Jeremy speaks with Garrett Johnson, co-founder and executive director at Lincoln Network. Garrett shares how government and technology have operated in “separate silos” rather than embracing the exciting opportunities that sit at the intersection of these two spheres. From his experience in government, it is clear that “technologists and innovators play an important role in addressing our nation's most pressing problems.” Garrett believes that when both of these worlds come together, individual liberty and economic opportunity increase for all Americans and strengthen civil society. PRACTICALITIESYou'll also hear from Devon Ironside, Director of Data Services at American Philanthropic, about the common mistakes organization make in their databases and how to fix them. ____We'd love to hear your thoughts, ideas, questions, and recommendations for the podcast! Alex talks to the brilliant Aaron Ginn about lockdown scepticism throughout the world, the thinking behind the world's lockdown response, silicon valley and the state of America today. Aaron Ginn is an early adopter of lockdown scepticism. His viral (pun intended) Medium article, Covid-19, Evidence over Hysteria, was one of the first to question the extreme governmental response to Covid-19, before it was censored by Medium and removed from the platform. Having been the only Silicon Valley member of Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign, Ginn, with his cofounders, established Lincoln Network to use technology to promote liberty in the public space. He has previously led growth product management at Everlane, StumbleUpon and is known in the valley for launching and popularizing the "growth hacking movement."
Dr. Jennifer K. Thompson is joined by Marshall Kosloff, director of outreach and media for the Lincoln Network, to talk about how technology has changed news media and the role that it plays in a free and democratic society. How has the rise of the internet and social media changed the nature of the news we consume? How does the way the news is funded influence the amount of bias in journalism? Show Notes
Last week, we featured the first half of a panel discussion organized by Lincoln Network, all about the concept of open internet protocols versus proprietary walled-garden platforms. The panel is moderated by Marshall Kosloff and features Mike Masnick, Cory Doctorow, Ashley Tyson and Mai Sutton, and this week we've got the second half of the discussion plus the audience Q&A.
Today on the podcast, we've got the first part of a panel discussion organized by Lincoln Network on a subject we've been talking more and more about around here: a return to an internet based on open protocols instead of closed platforms. The panel, which took place last week, is moderated by Marshall Kosloff and features Mike Masnick, Cory Doctorow, Ashley Tyson and Mai Sutton. In next week's episode we'll have the second half along with the Q&A at the end, but this week you can dive in to the first part of this wide-ranging discussion about protocols versus platforms.
Imagine an organization with the mission of finding fault with nearly everything everyone else does. In a nutshell, that's exactly what the Government Accountability Office does. And it's a good thing. In fact, Dan Lips and Tony Mills argue the highly productive GAO should get even more funding. Lips is director of Cyber and National Security at the Lincoln Network, while Mills is director of Science Policy at R Street. They joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin in studio for more discussion.
Open Markets Institute Fellow, Matt Stoller, and the Lincoln Network’s Head of Policy, Zach Graves, join The Realignment to discuss the origins of the populist backlash against Silicon Valley technology companies.
The founding fathers could never have imagined the technologies that drive today's United States. Many current members of Congress still don't get it. But a lot is happening and happening fast on that front. Joining Federal Drive with Tom Temin in studio, Zach Graves, policy chief at the Lincoln Network and Daniel Schuman, policy director at Demand Progress, had the latest details.
Over the past several years, conservative complaints about social media bias have grown. Some conservatives allege that platforms like Facebook, Google, and Twitter have tweaked their algorithms in ways that effectively downgrade conservative content or that they have “shadow-banned” conservative voices. In this episode, Paul and Will are joined by Zach Graves and Ryan Radia, both from the Lincoln Network, to discuss to what extent these allegations are legitimate and to weigh subsequent calls for government regulation. Is news structurally biased? How do conservatives and liberals respond differently to their content being censored online? Is Facebook a legitimate moderator of its’ own platform? What are the bounds of debate in our country? What is a “quality” experience on a social media platform? What is Section 230? What is the Fairness Doctrine?Further Reading:Why I’m Suing Twitter, written by Meghan MurphyThe Impossible Job: Inside Facebook’s Struggle to Moderate Two Billion People, written by Jason Koebler and Joseph KoxGoogle News results favor left-leaning media, report finds, written by Cat HofackerRelated Content:Free Speech Online, Free Thoughts PodcastToward an Uncensored Internet, written by Sonya MannFor Bad Speech, Is Sunlight Really the Best Disinfectant?, written by Christian Barnard See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Once upon a time, there was something called the Office of Technology Assessment, charged with the critical if unenviable task of educating members of congress about issues related to technology. Since that seems like a pretty good thing to have, recently some people have been pushing to re-establish the office. This week, we're joined by two of those people — Daniel Schuman from Demand Progress and returning guest Zach Graves from the Lincoln Network — for a discussion about bringing back the OTA.
This week’s interview is with Robert Zubrin, astronautics engineer and President of the Mars Society, who also introduced Elon Musk to Jim Cantrell at the founding of SpaceX. Dr. Zubrin was in Washington, DC at the Lincoln Network’s “Reboot American Innovation” conference to contrast the successes of the private sector space industry over the past few years with the excess and stagnation of NASA’s human flight program over the past few decades. At the current rate of innovation, he believes that the first manned mission to Mars will happen in our lifetimes.Should we settle Mars before we settle the moon? Are there regulatory restraints on the private space industry? Has our generation lost the drive to pursue the knowledge that made it possible for us to go to space? How do we inspire people to try something that has never been done before?Further Reading:The Case for Space: How the Revolution in Spaceflight Opens Up a Future of Limitless Possibility, written by Robert ZubrinReboot American Innovation May 2, 2019, Lincoln NetworkRelated Content:From SpaceX to Vector: Jim Cantrell and the Private Space Industry, Building Tomorrow PodcastJim Cantrell on Vector, Elon Musk, and Space Force, written by Spencer NealeA Libertarian Response to Global Depopulation, written by Pamela J. You've heard the uproar — conservatives are being censored on social media! But... are they? The short answer is no. The long answer is this week's podcast, with Lincoln Network policy head Zach Graves joining us for a discussion about the misinformation, hyperbole and general ridiculousness surrounding supposed social media bias.
Remember the Office of Technology Assessment? If so, you've been around a while. The group, which provided insight to Congress on technology and its implications, was defunded in 1995. A recently recovered staff member of the House Judiciary Committee argued it's time to bring back the OTA. Sasha Moss is government affairs manager at the R Street Institute and Zach Graves is policy chief at the Lincoln Network. Both joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin in the studio.
Congress has been deeply involved with federal information technology in recent years. It passed several landmark bills for greater data transparency, more efficient management of IT resources and offering the public digital services. Yet the Congress itself is stuck in a technological time warp. For some ideas on how to move the institution along, Zach Graves, head of policy at the Lincoln Network, joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin.
Matt hosts this episode of the podcast and interviews Zach Graves of the Lincoln Network. They bask in the cynicism DC tech policy: do Congressmen even know how to operate a fax machine? This is why Silicon Valley is going to take us over.
