January is known for New Year's Resolutions and Quitter's Day (the 2nd Friday in January). Often we start with the best intentions only to lose our motivation and determination 14 days later. It's a tradition as old as time. What if we postponed our goal-setting until spring? The weather is nicer, we are uplifted by the renewing nature of springtime, and sunshine and warm weather abound. Our mind, body, and spirit have survived the doldrums of winter and we're ready to start anew.As we all know too well, setting goals and achieving goals are two different things. In today's episode, we will explore tried and true strategies for setting realistic goals using the SMART acronym as our guiding principles. After all, a goal without a plan is just a daydream.https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/everyday-resilience/202303/spring-is-the-time-to-keep-new-resolutions?ampMy Main Goal Right Now www.Wisegoals.com.Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools by Tyler Statonhttps://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/psysociety/the-psychology-of-giving-thanks/

I can still remember the realization that settled on me, as I sat in my study in Greenville, Mississippi, three months after moving my family there to plant a church. I was in a miserable office with no windows in the top floor of a bank building. My second child had just been born, so I was sleep deprived, and it was dawning on me that I had no idea what I was doing. It was not for lack of prayer, I assure you. Church planters are desperate people. I was praying for revival, for a moment of God's grace; they were lofty prayers, good prayers. Church planting is a precarious vocation—you are only guaranteed a job for a short period, and, if things don't work out, you polish up the resume. At that time, I didn't have the theological categories, as I do now, to articulate what I was wrestling with, but I did know a few true things. I knew I couldn't save anyone—that was God's business. I also knew that, if all I did was pray like a monk in a monastery of silence, it would not move the needle, at least for my calling. I was paralyzed and scared to death. Then I realized another thing, and it was from both an observation in the Bible and also from reading church history: God blesses effort. In other words, I couldn't achieve the promise of seeing the gospel spread and people thrive by sheer force of will and personality, but nor could I plant a church by passively praying for God to convert sinners. This Sunday we walk into another mystery—how God moves the Kingdom forward, both in small places like our homes or in larger places like a church that is seeking to bless a town. We see a glorious model of this as we see David's response to God negating his will and instead giving him a bigger promise that He will build David a house. David prays in humble thanksgiving, and then he moves out to participate in the promise God has given him. Most of Christianity involves learning to pray and seek God's face, but that is not all; we are then called to participate in our frail flesh with the promises God has made. As one man put it, “…it's impossible to know God through private prayer without equally participating with God in public mercy.” (Tyler Staton, “Praying like Monks, Living Like Fools,” YouVersion, 10 Day Bible Reading Plan) Simple, but hard and risky. That, or something like that, is where we find ourselves in our text in I Chronicles. I can't wait to explore it together on Sunday.

The invitation of the Messiah in Jesus is that we can experience change and transformation and freedom from those places in our lives, and it happens through simply surrendering ourselves to Him, but this freedom that Jesus offers, it is not just all He has come to do. Jesus did not come simply to liberate us from spiritual oppression or from the death and sin that we find ourselves stuck in. He has a grander mission than that. He actually came to overturn the things in this world that are wrong, to set people free within this world, not just liberation someday, but liberation now. How do we engage in this liberation? We simply need to follow Jesus where He goes, because when you look at Jesus’ life and ministry, He always ends up going to the places where there are these people called the least, the people that most others would overlook, the people who are on the margins of society, the people who have nothing to offer the rest of the world, the people who are most desperately in need of jubilee. The intentional effort of proximity and connection can be powerful and transformative. When we journey with those we think need us it can become a reciprocal exchange, where they bring the spirit of Jubilee to us, initiating profound changes in our lives. Following Jesus into these spaces unveils glimpses of the freedom He offers, sparking inner transformation in the process. Sources: Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools by Tyler Staton

In his book, Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools, Tyler Staton said, “A maturing community is a confessing community – not a church without sin, but a church without secrets.” In order to be renewed, not only do we need to reflect on our lives, we need to verbally confess the sins we find there. In this sermon from our series on the commands of Christ, Cody digs into Jesus's command to “ask, seek, and knock.” Although this is a command about prayer, it goes much deeper than that. Jesus is calling us to deeper relationship in prayer, and to a persistent rhythm of prayer. We also dig into how we can reconcile this passage with the reality of suffering and seemingly unanswered prayer in the world around us.Links to resources for more on this topic:Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools by Tyler StatonGod on Mute by Pete Greig

This poignant narrative serves as a testament to how faith can overhaul desperate circumstances and how prayer can lead to healing and deliverance. Drawing from Tyler Staten's compelling book, "Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools," we delve into common fears and anxieties surrounding prayer and our relationship with God. Isaiah ch 28 vs 16 , Luke ch 6 vs 46-49 - Rev Israel Douglas - Sunday, August 27, 2023
If most of us are being honest, we likely consider prayer to be a weak point in our spiritual lives. We find it hard to make time to pray; we find it unproductive in a world obsessed with hurry and productivity; we feel guilty for not praying often enough, and yet when we finally set aside the time to do so, we find ourselves distracted or confused, not sure how to proceed. Rather than serving as a life-giving connection to a redemptive, loving, and restorative God in the midst of a broken world, prayer becomes a chore or a bore or a guilt-riddled religious game. We often find ourselves, as Jesus' earliest disciples did, wondering how we can begin to pray. Join us as Midtown as we wade into the challenging waters of prayer, exploring the way that the Psalms teach us authentic, genuine prayer, and how their model can provide us structures for how we begin to relate to and know God more fully in our own lives today. Listen as Pastor Clint introduces many of the hurdles we face when we enter into prayer, and then explores Psalm 20 and the practice of intercessory prayer. Sermon Resources: 1. Interview with Justin Rosenstein on social media: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/oct/05/smartphone-addiction-silicon-valley-dystopia 2. “We, for every kind of reason, good and bad, are distracting ourselves into spiritual oblivion. It is not that we have anything against God, depth, and spirit, we would like these, it is just that we are habitually too preoccupied to have any of these show up on our radar screens. We are more busy than bad, more distracted than nonspiritual, and more interested in the movie theater, the sports stadium, and the shopping mall and the fantasy life they produce in us than we are in church. Pathological busyness, distraction, and restlessness are major blocks today within our spiritual lives.” -Ronald Rolheiser, "The Holy Longing: The Search For A Christian Spirituality" 3. “If we truly love people, we will desire for them far more than it is within our power to give them, and this will lead us to prayer. Intercession is a way of loving others…it is selfless prayer, even self-giving prayer. In the ongoing work of the kingdom of God, nothing is more important than intercession.” -Richard Foster, "Prayer: Finding The Heart's True Home" 4. “To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world.” -Karl Barth 5. Story of Tyler and healing of Van from "Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools," by Tyler Staton 11. “Intercessory prayer is spiritual defiance of what is in the way of what God has promised. Intercession visualizes an alternative future to the one apparently fated by the momentum of current forces. Prayer infuses the air of a time yet to be into the suffocating atmosphere of the present. History belongs to the intercessors who believe the future into being. Even a small number of people, firmly committed to the new inevitability on which they have fixed their imaginations, can decisively affect the shape the future takes. These shapers of the future are the intercessors.” -Walter Wink, "History Belongs To The Intercessors"

I talk with a lot of leaders, and one of the issues that a lot of them wrestle with is their life of prayer. It often feels a lot easier to do something for God rather than talking with God. But God, as the good Father that he is, wants us to enjoy his presence first, and then join him in his good work in the world. We were made for friendship, and staying relationally present is how that grows. So I'm especially glad to share my this conversation with Tyler Staton about his book Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools. Tyler Staton is the Lead Pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, OR, and the National Director of 24-7 Prayer USA. He is passionate about pursuing prayer in the honest realities of day-to-day life. Tyler is also the author of Searching for Enough: The High Wire Walk Between Doubt and Faith. He lives in Portland with his wife Kirsten and their three sons. You can connect with Tyler on Instagram.

Katie McCoy, the director of Women's Ministry at Texas Baptists, shares with us that many contemporary believers misunderstand the status of women in the Old Testament. God's governance of His people before Christ's coming included a vision of women displaying their God-given dignity. Matthew 6:5-13 5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Day 13: Morning, Noon and Evening Today, we will think about Daniel, a man of God, person of prayer, prophet, dream interpreter and king's advisor in his spare time. Because of the Lord's favour upon him, King Darius put Daniel in charge of the kingdom. Such favour attracted jealousy, resulting in others conspiring to throw him to the lions. We know that Daniel was uncompromising in that He refused to renounce prayer to Yahweh in Babylonian culture. He would not order his prayer life according to the foreign land's culture, customs and expectations. He also boldly went to the king to interpret dreams that others couldn't and saved the lives of his friends. In response to the news that Jerusalem must lie desolate for 70 years, Daniel 9 records his prayer of intercession, one of his most well-known prayers. Verse 3 says, "So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with Him in prayer and petition…" In verses 5-14, Daniel acknowledges that God's punishment is deserved, and in verses 15-16, Daniel repents and asks for forgiveness. Verse 23 describes a messenger from God saying how precious Daniel is, that he is highly esteemed and heard. Where was Daniel's faith, boldness, and uncompromising focus found? How can we become a people who fast, believe and walk in boldness these days? I believe the answer is found in Daniel 6:10, “Three times a day, he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” He most likely prayed morning, noon and evening because that's exactly what King David did (Psalms 55:16-17). We also read of Peter praying three times per day; these times were even referred to as the "hours of prayer" in the New Testament (Acts 2:15, Acts 3:1 and Acts 10:9). In Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools, Tyler Staton writes: “Have you ever wondered how the apostles were able to gather their scattered congregations for emergency prayer meetings in a huge city in a world before cell phones? The most likely explanation is that they were already gathering for prayer at set points throughout the day.” Daniel was a man of prayer with a disciplined prayer rhythm. This is not a prescriptive model of prayer but rather a description of what happens when we live in a place of a disciplined prayer rhythm. God worked in Darius' life, and he acknowledged the miraculous power of God. In verse 26, Darius wrote, “I decree that everyone throughout my kingdom should tremble with fear before the God of Daniel. For he is the living God, and he will endure forever. His kingdom will never be destroyed, and his rule will never end. He rescues and saves his people; he performs miraculous signs and wonders in the heavens and earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.” The word fear that King Darius used means more than being afraid; it means that everyone should be "amazed, surprised, astonished, filled with wonder, filled with reverence, full of worship" for God. Lord, thank you for offering us many models of prayer throughout scripture, and that Daniel shows us the rhythm of prayer that ultimately brought a decree to everyone throughout the kingdom. Lord, I pray that we would live amazed, surprised, astonished, and filled with wonder, reverence, and worship for you. Amen. Reflect and Respond Ask the Lord how He would like you to order your prayer rhythm. Write a prayer of commitment. Meditate “God said to him, ‘Do not fear, Daniel, for, from the first day that you set your heart to understand and to humble yourself before your God, your words [prayers] were heard.'” (Daniel 10:12)

Tyler Staton, Amber, and Sam discuss prayer as an invitation to intimacy, how prayer is to risk trusting someone who might let you down, and three Biblical prayers for when you're feeling dry and weary. Questions Discussed During Prayer As An Invitation to Intimacy: Share a little about how your journey with Jesus began? You share about the summer you spent walking around your middle school praying. Share a little of that journey with us and what kept you showing up day in and day out? As we dive into this conversation about prayer, I ask this with love for the body of Christ and humor. I have a friend who pastors and has found countless cringe worthy stories from opening the church to public prayer. What is one of the funniest/most awkward prayer stories you have? Page 5 of Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools you write, "Most of us get about knee deep in the Christian life, discover that the water feels fine and stop there. We never swim in the depths of the divine intimacy Jesus won for us." How would you describe some of what we're missing when we stay knee deep? You also write, "To pray is to risk trusting someone who might let you down. To pray is to get our hopes up. And we've learned to avoid that. So we avoid prayer." Dig into that a little for us. For the chronically religious, what guidance would you offer when prayer becomes a chore instead of a joy? ..... SHOW NOTES cont. Maybe you're like us and often feel as if your prayers are hitting the ceiling. Maybe you struggle to even start praying at all. We know that God calls us to pray but why? If He's God and He's just going to do His will anyway, then why does praying even matter? In this week's episode, we wrestle through all these questions and how God's Word instructs us to respond. Prayer can be difficult for a host of reasons but the reward of prayer is life-changing in the way God uses it to transform our hearts and make us more like His Son. "Come to Me all who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let Me lead you, because I am gentle and lowly at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear and the burden I give you is light." 'What if, until now, you've never really prayed. Not like Jesus designed it, anyway.' Prayer is the source of Jesus's most astonishing miracles and the subject of Jesus' most audacious promises, and yet, most people - even most Bible-believing Christians - find prayer to be boring, obligatory, disappointing, confusing, or, most often, all of the above. If you've ever felt this way, Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools is your invitation to trade your conceptions and misconceptions about prayer for prayer in its purest form: a vital, sustaining, powerful connection with God that is more real and alive than you could have ever imagined. In this audiobook, Tyler Staton - author, pastor, and national director of the 24/7 Prayer movement - addresses common roadblocks to prayer and gives you the confidence to come to God just as you are. Through biblical teaching, powerful storytelling, and insights on historic Christian practices, Staton helps you... Express your doubts and disappointments about prayer Discover and practice multiple postures of prayer, including silence, persistence, confession, and more Understand and embrace the wonder and mystery of prayer in everyday life Realize that prayer is a powerful invitation to partner with God in the redemption of a fallen world And, ultimately, open or reopen the line of communication with your Creator and experience afresh his divine power on earth. Prayer is a journey, and this audiobook will help you transition your prayer life from a path littered with half-hearted requests to a treasured journey of ever-deepening, adventurous relationship with Jesus.
Today on the show we welcome Tyler Staton. Tyler is a pastor in Oregon and the author of the new book Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools.
