In this episode, we are keeping it real (even more so than usual!) because sometimes life throws a curveball.  At the last minute, Angela threw away the podcast outline and took a deep dive into some raw, vulnerable "real talk" with Fran about something she is wrestling with right now.  We hope this conversation reminds you we can do hard things with Jesus + one another.   Beautiful reminders:  In the Lord's Prayer, "daily bread" is sometimes moment by moment bread.  The Lord is so faithful to provide us with everything we need to survive every moment of every day.  Thank God for providing us with daily bread and consider "what I am to do with it?"  Then be still and let God be God.  Reset my thinking and be sure my thoughts are aligned with truth from scripture. Lord, we trust you and believe you for WHO YOU ARE!  Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.  I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him. If most of us are being honest, we likely consider prayer to be a weak point in our spiritual lives. We find it hard to make time to pray; we find it unproductive in a world obsessed with hurry and productivity; we feel guilty for not praying often enough, and yet when we finally set aside the time to do so, we find ourselves distracted or confused, not sure how to proceed. Rather than serving as a life-giving connection to a redemptive, loving, and restorative God in the midst of a broken world, prayer becomes a chore or a bore or a guilt-riddled religious game. We often find ourselves, as Jesus' earliest disciples did, wondering how we can begin to pray. Join us as Midtown as we wade into the challenging waters of prayer, exploring the way that the Psalms teach us authentic, genuine prayer, and how their model can provide us structures for how we begin to relate to and know God more fully in our own lives today. I talk with a lot of leaders, and one of the issues that a lot of them wrestle with is their life of prayer. It often feels a lot easier to do something for God rather than talking with God. But God, as the good Father that he is, wants us to enjoy his presence first, and then join him in his good work in the world. We were made for friendship, and staying relationally present is how that grows.  So I'm especially glad to share my this conversation with Tyler Staton about his book Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools. Tyler Staton is the Lead Pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, OR, and the National Director of 24-7 Prayer USA. He is passionate about pursuing prayer in the honest realities of day-to-day life. Tyler is also the author of Searching for Enough: The High Wire Walk Between Doubt and Faith. Isaiah 30:15-16Matthew 11:28-30The Big Idea: Real rest is a 24/7/365 invitation for followers of Jesus.The Problem:I'm worn out, overwhelmed, and rarely at rest.The Ten symptoms of “hurry sickness”:1. Irritability—You get mad, frustrated, or just annoyed way too easily.2. Hypersensitivity—It takes very little to throw you into an emotional funk and ruin your day.3. Restlessness—When you actually do try to slow down and rest, you can't relax.4. Workaholism (or just nonstop activity)—You just don't know when to stop. Or worse, you can't stop.5. Emotional numbness—You just don't have the capacity to feel another's pain.6. Out-of-order priorities—You feel disconnected from your identity and calling.7. Lack of care for your body—You don't have time for the basics of physical health8. Escapist behaviors—When we're too tired to do what's actually life-giving for our souls, we each turn to our distraction of choice: overeating, overdrinking, binge-watching Netflix, browsing social media, surfing the web, looking at porn—name your preferred cultural narcotic.9. Slippage of spiritual disciplines—When you get overbusy, the things that are truly life-giving for your soul are the first to go rather than your first go to10.
