Verdammt, da war noch der Platzhalter online und nicht der Text den ich zur Folge mit Stephan geschrieben hatte. Und erst jetzt ist mir aufgefallen und schon über 70 Downloads sind über die Playertheke gegangen. Also ein absolutes Chapeau an alle Earlybirds. So einfach - so ungewöhnlich... ungewöhnlich gut. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got the guitarist-singer of a great young-ish band from Minneapolis in conversation with a hotshot guitarist who's just starting to make a name for herself: Nathan Stocker of Hippo Campus and Yasmin Williams. Hippo Campus formed just under a decade ago, while Stocker and his bandmates were still in high school. They came out of the gate just as you might expect: eager and excited, releasing a series of EPs followed by a bang-bang pair of excellent albums and inspiring crowds at pretty much every festival you could think of. After touring behind 2018's Bambi, Hippo Campus took some time to stretch their legs, with each member heading off into side projects of various sounds and sizes. But the band reconvened with fresh motivation and a clearer-eyed outlook last year, and they came up with a powerhouse of an album with the simple title of LP3. It's slightly more mature in the best ways, but still incredibly catchy and true to their sound. There's a lot of inward looking existential lyrics, but wrapped in fantastic hooks. It was Stocker's idea to chat with guitarist Yasmin Williams, who he had recently come across via NPR's long-running, always reliable Tiny Desk concert series. That performance was particularly captivating, because you're not just hearing what Williams can do with an acoustic guitar, but you're seeing it as well. She takes the foundation built by fingerstyle masters like John Fahey and Michael Hedges but brings a modern sensibility to it: In this conversation, she talks a lot about her love of metal and math-rock, bits of which you can almost hear in her beautiful playing. Williams has released two albums so far, and as you'll also hear in this chat, she's working on a third. The latest is Urban Driftwood. Williams and Stocker didn't know each other at all prior to this chat, but it turned out that she's a Hippo Campus fan. The two talk about gear nerd stuff, YouTube videos by Andy McKee, being in competition with yourself, and of course the inspiration for Williams' interest in music to begin with: a little game called Guitar Hero 2. Enjoy. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range.
Hippo Campus has a new album coming out next month, they'll kick off their tour at The Sylvee here in Madison on February 17th, and they'll make another late night TV appearance next week! Check out our conversation to find out why Nathan thinks the Twin Cities and the midwest are so special and the difference between the new album "LP3" and the EP "Good Dog, Bad Dream" that came out less than 6 months ago.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Lee Scratch Perry passed away a short while ago and rather than add to the plethora of tributes by so many much better qualified than I to honour him, I held off until now, when I felt I could no longer delay my addition to celebrating the incredible creativity of Jamaica's most exotic producer and performer. There is something about his utilisation of his own life as an ongoing artistic installation of Words, Sounds and Power that became a major reason for my interest in Jamaican CULTURE. This show is offered as truly as one ever could be to a LEGEND.The following is not a comprehensive look at his music, from early productions beloved by those proponents of ‘Skinhead Reggae' to the later Reverb washed mystical meanderings on U-Sound records; instead it's some of my favourite Perry productions, mainly it has to be said from the era of his Black Art outpourings. You could collect his music for decades and still only be part the way to lifting the surface on his musical output, I'm no expert, but I know what I like! Our listeners in the UK might conclude that David Bowie had five Number One hit singles. Meanwhile, our listeners in the US will say that Bowie had just two Number Ones. However, here at Derringer Discoveries, we cater to the entire world and worldwide, Bowie had 11 Number One hit singles while he was living and one more Number One hit single posthumously. Listen up as two of The Derringer Brothers - Alton and Paul - discuss and play snippets from all of Bowie's Number One hits from around the world while covering his "classic period" from 1969 to 1986. Does Bowie Jump the Shark or Cross the Rubicon? Stay to the end and discover Alton's shocking revelation. Bowie's sole posthumous Number One hit from 2016 is just one of many mind-blowing discussion points raised by Alton and Paul during this episode. For example, Radio Three Chart (LP3) is the oldest and longest-running music chart in Poland. On a weekly basis, Marek and Piotr - Polskie Radio's alternating hosts - countdown Warsaw, Poland's top hit singles. Marek and Piotr, along with their dedicated listeners, are the ones who decided to give Bowie his 12th Number One hit single! Kudos to LP3! But, what does LP3 have to do with Derringer Discoveries? Well, in keeping with the LP3 spirit and perhaps off-their-rockers, in this episode, Derringer Discoveries officially unveils The Turnip Music Radio (TMR) Top 25. During the inaugural month of October 2021, the first TMR Number One hit single was Harder Than It Should Be by the New Haven, Connecticut duo Goodnight Moonshine. Today's Post-Episode Playout (i.e., Bonus) features an interview with an impressive, wonderfully-melodic band from Detroit Michigan called The Legal Matters. In addition, please visit the Turnip Music Radio (TMR) Top 25, a music chart by Derringer Discoveries, available on Spotify. We had the pleasure of interviewing Dan Rose of Elder Brother over Zoom video! Founded in 2014 by vocalist Dan Rose and The Story So Far guitarist Kevin Geyer, ELDER BROTHER have always oscillated away from the hard-charged, sweat-drenched sounds of their figureheads’ primary impulses, opting for more brooding, patient tendencies of indie rock and Midwestern emo. But by stripping themselves down even further – to nothing but their bare essentials – the Bay Area-based band’s message reverberates louder than ever on their third full-length, I WON’T FADE ON YOU. Produced by Grammy-nominated Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Joyce Manor), LP3 finds Elder Brother, now a full-time quartet with the addition of bassist Morgan Foster and drummer/keyboardist Evan Garcia-Renart, in their most comfortable place yet, distancing themselves from their alternative roots in a profound way while simultaneously elevating their place in the prolific NorCal underground scene. We want to hear from you! It's another week of weird! Here we go again with your two co-hosts being warm in a kitchen, talking plenty of IDLES news, briefly touching on LP3, and interviewing Chris and Mikey of Frauds! Stay home. Stay safe. Stay healthy. All is love. Enjoy!
This week we pay tribute to the late Adam Schlesinger by talking about the Self Titled Fountains of Wayne record. We also talk about one of Caleb's recent favorites; LP3 by American Football. It's the 89th annual I'm Scum: An IDLESCast Scummy Awards! Welcome to this totally 100% real awards ceremony to celebrate 89 years of IDLES, AFGang, and bands that generally kick ass! In part 1 of our overly long awards ceremony, all the hardworking members of IDLES and those behind the scenes finally get the recognition they deserve if that recognition is two best friends doing a real ramble gamble handing out trophies. Also, some IDLES news, LP3, and our first bit of mail! Enjoy it!
Steve, Mike, Steve, and Nate of American Football talk about their history together and musical influences, why they went away for 15 years and then came back, their new Polyvinyl album, LP3, and much, more! Photo by Paige Medor. Supported by CFRU 93.3 FM, Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts.
American Football’s Mike and Nate Kinsella are on the line with Kyle Meredith to talk all about LP3. The two cousins discuss how this album feels like their first followup, and what that meant as far as where they could take the songs. Mike also discusses catering to the emo crowd in your 40s, working with Hayley Williams of Paramore and Rachel Goswell of Slowdive, and how one of the songs has ties to Pure Bathing Culture. We also head back to that famous house from the first album's artwork to hear why it doesn't grace the latest, and what the future holds for the band. Radiohead finally joins rock royalty with much reluctance as they are inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame. We luckily were able to snatch some tickets and watch as the ceremony unfolded for many, many hours. Who was there? What did they wear? Did David Byrne’s speech inspire or confound? We have all those answers plus some behind the scenes tidbits from our mole on the inside. Plus we chat about an surprising Pyramid Song cover, Colin’s first cover story, Thom’s LP3 rumor mill, and Jonny’s possible connection to an awful film. Special thanks to Joe and Kristen from Who Cares About the Rock Hall? This is a big fucking deal!
Episode 110 // This week we return to the gridiron of late 90's emo with American Football's latest LP. Like the NFL it's long and drawn out but no one can get enough of it! It's the coolest thing to happen to american football since kneeling for the national anthem...LP3, next, on The Radio Cure! Wow, we made it to 150 episodes. Crazy to think about all the folks that have come on to share their story with you and I. To that, a big part of this is agreeing to be open and talk about their music. American Football gets the gold star. Before the reunions, in January 2014, Mike was on the podcast for the first time chatting about his career. For LP2, I had everyone in American Football individually to discuss reuniting and what it was like to write together again. So for LP3 I wanted to do something different…This time, I got Mike and Nate together in a room in NYC to discuss every single song in detail on LP3. We go from beginning to end on the writing process, the disagreements, sequencing, and why they made certain decisions for every song. Mike also recommends some bands I’ve never heard before and Nate reads an email he sent to the band passionately discussing why he feels his track listing order is the way it should go. The Daily Mail reunited IRL to see Thom Yorke on the Tomorrow's Modern Boxes tour last week, and we get together today to talk about how great it was (spoiler alert: really fucking great.) Plus: Suspiria, LP3, and what we think might be in store from the band in 2019. Thanks for another year of listening to us talk about Radiohead for way too many hours!
